• There are an estimated 33 million teenagers in the U.S.-
The largest generation ever.
• Each year U.S. teens spend an estimated $179 billion and influence to spend an additional $50 billion per year.

No matter what they say in public, the truth is…

It is illegal for persons under 21 to purchase, possess
and use Marijuana in Washington State.

• It is illegal for a person under 21 years old to purchase, possess and use marijuana.
• It is illegal to drive under the influence of Marijuana
• It is illegal to consume marijuana in the view of the general public.
• Its illegal for an adult to provide marijuana to a minor.
• It is illegal to possess or use recreational Marijuana if you are under 21 years of age!!!

What we know about Marijuana…
• Marijuana is an addictive drug:
• 8 out of 10 Teens who enter treatment in Washington State, do so because of marijuana abuse and/or
addiction.
• 1 in 6 people who start using marijuana as a teen will become addicted to it.
• Regular marijuana use makes it harder to learn, pay attention, and remember
things.
• Marijuana messes with brains chemicals, and can make a person feel anxious,
paranoid or depressed.
• Marijuana can cause you to loose interest in things you once loved.
• Driving while high could cause you to get in a crash, injure yourself or others, get
arrested, or lose your driver’s license

MOST TEENS IN WASHINGTON STATE
DO NOT USE MARIJUANA!!!
2014 HYS Survey data shares that 4 out of 5 Teens
in Washington State DO NOT use marijuana.

• Be Direct
Say “no thanks”; sometimes it’s just that easy.
• Repeat Yourself
Be firm in your position and continue to repeat your response, “no thanks”.
• State Why
Give a reason why; try saying, “no thanks, I have to be up early tomorrow” (or I have a game tomorrow or I have to be home
early or I got caught the last time).
• Turn the Tables
If the person won’t let up try turning the tables and ask, “why do you care if I do or don’t”. Be confident in your response.
• State the Truth
People don’t like being accused of peer pressuring others, so try stating the obvious, “wow, the peer pressure in this room is
pretty strong”, then smile and walk away.
• Walk Away
It is always an option to not respond and just walk away.
• Change the Subject
Try suggesting something better to do with your time, “no thanks, do you want to _______”.
• Be Proactive
If you know you are in a situation where you are likely to be offered alcohol or other drugs, leave before you ever get to that
point.
• Accept the Person, Reject the Behavior
If the person is giving you a hard time try telling the person, “I respect your choice to do drugs, respect mine not to”.

YOUTH ADVOCATES AND PEER TO PEER MENTORS
PREVENT SUBSTANCE USE!!!
• Take the Lead: Form a prevention club in your school.
• Provide education through classroom presentations and
assemblies to your peers.
• Develop a social norms campaign in your school. Let your
peers know that most teens do not use marijuana.
• Be a role model to younger siblings and peers.
• Provide support and/or seek help for a friend in trouble. They
may not like it now, but they will thank you later.
