Criteria: Farming Operation Version: Version 5.0 (1.5.2018) Replaces Version of: Version 4.0 (1.7.2015) Applicability: Farming Operations The Selva Shrimp program encompasses aquaculture of native Penaeid Shrimp (Penaeus spp) in natural, zero-input Silvofishery farming systems in mangrove areas of Southeast Asia. The program and its criteria are subject to an independent, third party verification and approval process according to the official guidelines defined in the document “GUIDELINES FOR VERIFICATION AND APPROVAL of SELVA SHRIMP”. Farm site is permitted by the relevant authorities. 2 As intermediate standard, a minimum of 30% of breeders shall be farm-raised (selection and domestication). Wild caught breeders, - after being used in hatcheries -, must either be released into the wild habitat or be stocked in ponds for future, additional spawning cycles. 3 Definition: All materials not sourced from within the farm. External feed is not allowed at the grow-out stage except for nursery stage. 4 Definition of mangrove forest surface: Surface area of farming operation that is covered by mangrove plants (i.e. this excludes dykes, land for buildings, roads, etc). Mangrove plants include primary forest as well as newly reforested areas. 5 To safeguard the functionality of the ecosystem, a variety of species, - preferably endemic -, must be considered. The overall diversity shall be as close to the previous natural habitat as possible. Alien species must not be introduced. 6 Exception: for fish allowed by natural substance (e.g. Sapponine) 7 Species classified by IUCN Red List TM as endangered (EN) or critically endan- gered (CR) or as listed in the Vietnamese Red Data Books (Volume 2: Plants, 1996 and Volume 1: Animals, 2000) 8 See “SELVA SHRIMP® Criteria: Farm Group Approval” for reference 9 By means of a written health management plan 10 Dredged sediment from canals and ponds is properly contained to prevent the salinization of soil and groundwater. Dead shrimp must be buried or burned and must not be left in the environment of the farms. Potentially infected pond water must be retained at least two weeks prior to exchange with environment.
