Updated face-to-face guidelines

Last week the DoE released updated face-to-face learning guidelines. In line with health advice, many additional activities are now able to recommence. After careful thought and planning the following now apply:

• School assemblies can occur if less than 15 minutes. Tomorrow there will be a 3-6 morning assembly in the hall. Students in 3-6 will need to proceed to the hall when the 8:55am bell rings. From next week K-2 Monday morning assemblies will recommence. When the 8:55am morning bell rings students in K-2 will meet at their classroom and will then walk to the hall with their teachers. Wednesday assemblies to contin-ue as a virtual assembly until, at least, the end of term 2.

• All PSSA Winter sport has been cancelled. All zone, regional and state PSSA carnivals have been can-celled for 2020. We will conduct our school Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals when the time is appro-priate. These events may run in their traditional format or as a modified version.

• All extra-curricular groups can restart - dance, choir, debating etc. Coordinating teachers will let students know when groups recommence.

• SRC met yesterday for the first time since COVID-19 • Incursions can begin from June 15. • We will be in contact with external providers to organise recommencement dates for band, strings, FLIP

Gym, chess etc. • SRE and SEE will recommence in term 3 week 2 • Drop and Go and Collect and Clear procedures will continue until further notice. A number of activities remain under DoE consideration:

• school camps • excursions (except field trips) • parents attendance at assemblies • parent volunteers

Digital notes

Digital notes will now replace most paper notes for incursions, excursions, sport and other events where permis-sion is sought. Digital notes will be pushed out through the Newington Public School app and via enews. The first digital note was pushed out yesterday for the Year 2 Toys incursion. We hope that you find this new procedure more convenient than paper permission notes.

Earn and Learn

In 2019 NPS collected 83880 Earn and Learn stickers. The following resources (valued over $3300) were re-ceived: • Pro-Bot recharchable robots and mat (x4) • First coding robot sets (x12) • Large plastic dice (x2) • Edison Robot V2 (x10) • Lego compatible building pieces (x2) • Edison spare parts (x1) • Erasers (x29) Thanks to Kim McCleery for collecting the stickers from Lid-combe Woolworths and to Deb Singh for coordinating the Earn and Learn initiative.

Reid Against Racism

Fiona Martin MP, the Federal Member for Reid, recently ran a creative competition for school students. Newing-ton Public School promoted this competition to Year 6 students, and we have had several very talented entries. Congratulations to all students who entered the competition. Here is a sample of some of their work:

Unity is a dream. We’ll never be sure if that dream will be fulfilled, but we have to try. Some people will always be judgemental or greedy. Someone will always think that a certain race has a certain characteristics. But it’ll bring our world a little happiness if you tried to be the kindest you could be. Think of someone as a person, not an object. We cannot change how we look. But maybe we can change what we see.

school, we were all writing!!! The solid front gates creaked and turned. Large smiles from ear to ear. The pitter patter of black leather school shoes rubbing on the backs of heels. That strong morning coffee flavour circulating in my mouth. Freshly washed uniforms all crisp and clean. The waft of warmed car motors on a cold and frosty morning in drop off zones. My fin-gers grasped the cold sil-ver handle of the room. My heart raced with ex-citement, as adrenalin filled my body. Today is the day! It has finally ar-rived!! 8.55am and it has chimed! Parenting Insight

Conquering kids’ techno-tantrums

Many of us have witnessed our kids or teens emotionally combust when asked to switch off their gaming console or put their phone away. I colloquially call these ‘techno-tantrums’. Many of us fret that this sig-nals that they’re ‘addicted’ to technology and find ourselves worrying about why they behave in such in-tense ways.

So, what makes technology so psychologically appealing for kids and how can we help them to unplug so that screen-time doesn’t end in scream time?

Technology is so appealing

Technology has been intentionally designed to cater for our kids’ most basic psychological drivers. As humans, our three most basic psychological needs are the need for connection, competence and con-trol.

Technology caters for these needs in very clever ways. For example, our need for relational connection explains why many of our boys are obsessed with multi-player video games and girls are infatuated with social media. These online tools have also been designed to help young people experience competency- gamers see tangible measures of their performance by their levels of attainment, or battles won. Scroll-ing through YouTube and ‘selecting’ which video they’ll watch next also enables young people to experi-ence a sense of control and agency over their lives – something they biologically crave.

Here’s what technology does to their brains and bodies Digital technology impacts on children and young people in the following ways: ‘It feels good’

When our kids use a screen it’s usually a pleasurable experience for them. Their brains secrete the neu-rotransmitter dopamine, which makes them feel good. This means, when you demand that they turn the device off, you’re terminating their production of dopamine (pleasure response). It’s better to provide a choice of more appealing transition activities when you want them to move away from a screen. For ex-ample, suggest that they ride their bike, or walk the dog after they’ve switched off the device. ‘I want more’

The online world has no stopping cues, so our kids and teen never feel ‘complete’ or ‘done’. They can always refresh social media; continue to play to attain another level in a game; or watch another YouTube clip. This is also referred to as the state of insufficiency. One parenting tips that works is to give your children and teens hard end points. Rather than giving them a quantity of time (for example, you can watch an hour of TV today), give them the finish time (for example, I’d like you to switch off the TV at 4:30pm). ‘It’s so novel’

Our brains are wired to seek out new and interesting stimulus. The online world is always instantly grati-fying, fast-paced and requires minimal cognitive effort. In comparison the offline, real world doesn’t al-ways offer novelty. The real world is a lot slower-paced, and it’s not always instantly rewarding and inter-esting like our kids’ digital world. Ensure your kids and teens have ample time to experience boredom. Our brains were never designed to be switched on and processing information as they are in the digital world. Opportunities for boredom allow the brain time to reset and help our kids become accustomed to not always being ‘switched on’.

Student reviews of the G.A.T.E.WAYS online programs

On Wednesday 17 June, selected students from grades 1 to 6 participated in our first G.A.T.E.WAYS online program. There was great excitement prior to the course starting and then intense focus and engagement as students started their online courses. Here are some student reviews of the day. Lachlan (5O) – Figurate it out! It was really fun, I didn’t know a lot about algebra before I did this program. I wouldn’t normally pick a maths program, but I learnt a lot. The program explained really hard algebra problems using dots that created shapes. We also looked at figurate numbers. Anna (6F) – Making rules, breaking rules: writing challenges gone mad! I learnt so many new things, it really improved my creative potential for literature. It has made me think in a new way. I am so grateful, writing is definitely awesome. Devvin (6F) – Into the unknown: An adventure in astronomy and astrophysics. It was really great, I loved it! It enhanced my knowledge of what I already know and gave me a differ-ent perspective of what space really is. It made me think about space as room kept for discovering new planets and life.
