Flying Start This week we read the story, ‘I Got This Hat’ and discussed the different types of jobs we can do when we grow up. The students enjoyed making their own chef hat to wear. We sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Jack and finished of the session by playing outside on the equipment. We’ve enjoyed our Flying Start sessions this term. All students have beautifully adapted to the routines of ‘big school’. We hope to see you all again after the holidays on Monday 29

th July for another

exciting term!

Debating CPS Vs MVPS Last Friday, Crookwell Public School deliberated against Moss Vale Public School in three debates. In the first debate Crookwell Magpies versed Moss Vale’s Year 6 team. The topic was ‘Every class should have a cat or a dog as a class pet’. We were the affirmative side and although we had very convincing arguments CPS, unfortunately lost this debate.

In the second debate Crookwell Dingos opposed Moss Vale’s Year 5 team. The topic was ‘Schools should ban all homework in primary school.’ Once again we were the affirmative side. This debate was extremely close, the adjudicator took a long time to address the audience with the results and eventually awarded it to Moss Vale.

In the last debate Crookwell Dingos faced the practiced Year 6 team from Moss Vale. The topic was ‘Schools should replace all sport time with class time.’ It was another close debate and Moss Vale just won this debate with a great rebuttal and summary from their third speaker. A real highlight of the day was hearing the threads that tied each speaker together in their debates. Both CPS teams came up with some very catchy phrases including…

Adopt a stray, it’ll make your day Homework is no work To write is right!

Jesse, Kiarna, Billy, Flo, Regan, and Stirling are to be commended on their outstanding improvement in debating skills over the last few weeks! Congratulations and keep up the positivity!

Many thanks to Regan Selmes who joined the CPS Magpies team again as a stand in! It is much appreciated!

CPS Magpies: Stirling Inder, Flo Dark and Regan Selmes.

CPS Dingos: Jesse Faulkner, Kiarna McCarten and Billy

Snape.

Flo and Stirling enjoy the opportunity to be Chairperson and

Timekeeper for the third debate.

Regan Selmes delivers resounding arguments against Moss

Vale’s Year 6 team.

STEM Circuits On Wednesday, Stage 3 students had another great visit from Mrs Clements to learn about circuits. An electrical circuit is the complete loop through which an electrical current flows. It is made up of a series of components and conductors. Students explored parallel and series circuits using equipment such as batteries, wires, light bulbs and bells. This experience and knowledge will support Stage 3 in their design process and development of STEM projects. Thanks Mrs Clements and well done Stage 3.

Abby, Flo and Emma create a parallel circuit.

Jay, Tyler and Charlie succeed in piloting a series circuit.

Crookwell Boys Hockey versus Parkview Public The boys’ hockey team travelled a long way last week, all the way to Wagga Wagga, to meet a team from another small town called Leeton. This team was an unknown opponent, having never had a hockey team in the competition before.

Our boys had a training session before the game with our dedicated coach, Mrs McGregor, and some of the development coaches from the Wagga Wagga Hockey Association. The game begun quickly with both teams excited to test their freshly trained and newly learnt skills.

It took a while before our boys were able to find the net but excitement showed when the ball found its way past a very talented goal keeper. From here the boys managed to find the net a number of times, resulting in a very convincing 6-0 win.

All players showed tremendous sportsmanship and should be commended for their efforts on and off the field. Good luck for your next game against Bowral Public School.

Myles takes on several players at once.

Luke keeps his eye on the ball as he challenges the

opposition.

George visited the Dog on the Tuckerbox on the long journey

to Wagga Wagga.

Our spectacular boys hockey team.

Gymnastics Highlights Thank you Vaughn for another fabulous term of gymnastics. All students from Kindergarten to Year Six have enjoyed participating in the weekly lessons, learning so many new skills. Students have strengthened their ability across a range of gymnastics techniques as well as using new equipment. Gymnastics has had a positive impact on our physical health and has increased our self-confidence and wellbeing. We look forward to welcoming Vaughn back next year!

CWA Projects – Papua New Guinea Students in Years 3-6 have been researching Papua New Guinea as part of the CWA Country of Study for 2019. The due date for these projects is Thursday 25

th, July.

If you’re looking for something great to do in the holidays, why not complete your PNG project, or if you haven’t yet started, please do so!

Projects can be presented on a large piece of cardboard, as a poster. You may like to include information about Papua New Guinea’s location, population, people, food, languages, life style, history or any other material you find interesting. The CWA are very passionate about education and have supported the children of CPS for many years. It would be great to receive as many entries as possible. There are also some great prizes to be won!

Please hand your poster in to the school office by Thursday 25

th, July.

Good Luck!

Parent/Teacher Interviews It was great to see so many of our families take advantage of the chance to meet with their child’s class teacher at the parent/teacher interview sessions. I hope you found the exchange of information that occurs at parent/teacher interviews as valuable as the class teachers did.

It is extremely important, that both parent and teacher have a strong positive relationship and a clear understanding of directions being followed, if a strong and positive, partnership with the child’s education as the central focus is to be established.

If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher but missed the opportunity to attend the parent/teacher interviews, please feel free to contact the school on 48 321 213 to arrange an alternative appointment date and time.

I encourage your active participation in the home/school education partnership as it is of is of paramount importance to your child’s success at school.

With love and thanks

Before I embark on the joys and challenges of parenthood I would like to take time to thank the Crookwell Public School community for their support and kind wishes.

To my class: 5/6 Kookaburra. You are an amazing group of students all with unique and admirable personalities. I am going to miss our daily check-ins, random surveys and the funny stories that you share. Thank you for your consideration over the past two terms and doing extra trips up the stairs to deliver items when I became too tired to face what felt like another quest up Mt Everest.

To Mr Atfield: I am so grateful that you are the teacher who will continue to guide 5/6 Kookaburra through the remainder of 2019. They are so lucky to have you and I know how excited you are to have this lovely class! I was lucky to have you as my Year 6 teacher so I have no doubt they will have very fond memories of their final years in primary school because of you! Have fun together!

To all students of CPS: keep being the incredible people that you are! I can’t wait to see how much you have all grown when I return after maternity leave (I will be sure to visit plenty in the meantime). My biggest wish is that my son or daughter is as kind, thoughtful and genuine as you all are. To the staff: it is going to be hard being away from CPS and working with such passionate people each and every day. You provide such a caring and nurturing environment, with an abundance of opportunities, always valuing every student at CPS.

To the parents and the school community: I have been so fortunate to be part of Crookwell Public School for the past 10 years. During that time you have been extremely supportive and appreciative of me as a teacher to your children. I look forward to raising my children in our wonderful community and hope that I am able to tackle the many challenges that comes with being a parent, as you all do so well. Thank you for the kind words and heartfelt conversations I have had with many of you over the past few months wishing myself, Oscar and baby all the best.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon and introducing you to Baby Bell!

Flu season is here! Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Remind your child about these good hygiene practices to minimise the spread of infection:

Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should stay home until their symptoms are gone.

Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use.

Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness.

Spotted cont. Year 6 for approaching high school transition with a

positive attitude!

Jay Knight for his enthusiasm when learning about electrical circuits.

Charlotte Selmes for bravery.

Sophie Watson and Maddy Wray for their thoughtfulness towards friends outside of school.

5/6 Kookaburra for being the best class ever! Mrs Bell will miss you!
