Mr. James Hamilton of Lost River was drowned in the Crookwell NSW River Saturday night last.

Deceased had been working for Mr. Henry Carr, somewhere beyond Binda and was on his way

home on horseback. He called at Binda where he was last seen by Mr. W. Rolfe. Next morning

he was found washed up against a tree, by, we believe Mr. Webster, about ¼ mile below where

the Crookwell NSW River crosses the Wheeo Binda Road. An inquiry was held by Mr. E. A.

Webster yesterday and Mr. S. L .Cox, when a verdict of accidental drowning was returned.

Deceased was about 40 years of age and leaves a wife and six children in very distressed

circumstances. (He was actually 48 years of age)

Flood at Crookwell NSW-

A Man Drowned

Telegrams from Crookwell NSW report rough weather. On Saturday a thunderstorm, which was

usually severe commenced about four o'clock and within two hours two inches of rain fell

flooding the low- lying portions of the town. Rogers' store and several private homes were

inundated. The river rose a banker and carried away fences, culverts, and one bridge. Heavy rain

fell on Saturday night and Sunday with the thunder storms. The total official register was 540

points. The police report having found the body of a man named James Hamilton washed up into

a willow tree, three miles from Binda, in the Crookwell River. The deceased left the Binda Royal

Hotel about twelve o'clock on Saturday night for Lost River where he resided on a selection. On

Sunday morning Mr. A Webster found his horse in a paddock and made a search along the river

without result. He then went for the police and they found the body half a mile below the

crossing, a magisterial inquiry was held yesterday and a verdict of accidental drowning was

returned. Hamilton, who was 40 years old, leaves a widow and six children totally unprovided

for.

SUDDEN DEATH It is with regret that we record the death of Mrs. Peter Cavill, which took

place at her residence off the Wheeo road, about six miles from Crookwell NSW, on Sunday

afternoon last. It appears that deceased suffered from bleeding at the throat, and was attended for

this complaint by Dr Pawlett some two months ago. Deceased recovered from the attack, and

was up and about in her usual health to the day of her death, in fact she assisted in cooking the

family dinner on Sunday. Shortly before dinner time on Sunday a severe attack of bleeding at the

throat and nose took place, and all efforts to stop the bleeding were to no avail, death taking place

some two hours after its commencement, and before medical assistance could be procured.

Deceased was 52 years of age, and had resided in this district all her life, being highly respected

by all who were acquainted with her. We beg to extend our sympathy to the bereaved family in

SUDDEN DEATH A sudden death occurred at Lost River on Sunday afternoon last, the victim

being Mrs. Cavill, wife of Mr. P. Cavill, of that part. She had been ailing for some time past and

was under medical treatment, but on Sunday afternoon appeared no worse than usual. However,

she was suddenly attacked in the afternoon and succumbed within two hours. An inquest was

dispensed with.

Saturday 8 June 1895 p 3 Article - The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate

CHARGES AGAINST A TEACHER. The trial of William James Davidson, on a charge

of having on January 20th. and March 7th, at Cullen's Creek, criminally assaulted Mary

Ann Hamilton, his pupil, was concluded, a the Criminal Court on Thursday afternoon.

After the address of council and his Honor Mr. Justice Simpson's. summing up, the jury,

at ten minutes to 1 o'clock, retired to consider their verdict. At 20 minutes past two

o'clock they returned into court with a verdict of guilty on both counts, with a

recommendation to mercy on account of the prisoner's previous good character. He was

remanded for sentence.

Serious Charge against a Teacher. At the Goulburn Circuit Court on Tuesday, William

James Davidson, a young man under 30 years of age, was charged with that he did on the

4th January, he being then a schoolmaster, unlawfully and carnally know a pupil named

Mary Ann Hamilton, aged 14 years and 2 months, at Curran's Creek, near Crookwell. He

was further charged with having committed a second offence on the same pupil on 7th

March. The circumstances surrounding the alleged offences have already been made

public. His Honor Mr. Justice Innes, reviewing the evidence at length, directed the jury

that it was for them to determine whether they. believed prisoner's statement to be true in

the face of the evidence given by the girl and supported in every particular by that of Mrs.

Parker. He commended Mr. Harvey's action in reporting the man to the inspector. The

jury retired at 10.15 At 11.30 his Honor had the jury recalled into court, and as the

foreman stated there was no probability of their agreeing, they were locked up for the

night. On Wednesday morning, the jury having been locked up for twelve hours, and not

being likely to agree, they were discharged. They are said to have been equally divided,

six for conviction and six for acquittal. The case was remanded to next assizes on 7th

October, or such other court as the Attorney-General might direct. The Crown prosecutor

said he would consent to bail, prisoner in £100 and two sureties in £50 each.

In the Divorce Court, Sydney Elizabeth Olive Davidson appeared in forma pauperis

For divorce from her husband, William James Davidson, on the ground of adultery, the

latter was a school teacher at Currans Creek, near Crookwell, and was sentenced to four

years for improper conduct with a scholar of 14. The matter stands over since sine die

owing to some difficulty about the admission of the girl’s evidence.

In Sydney yesterday, the adjourned Divorce case Davidson v Davidson came on. It was a

petition by Elizabeth Olive Davidson, formerly Cook, for a divorce from William James

Davidson on the grounds of adultery with Mary Ann Hamilton. The parties were married

by a Primitive Methodist minister at Paddington in November 1892. Respondent was a

school teacher at Currans Creek, near Crookwell, and Hamilton was one of the female

pupils. His Honor granted a Decree Nisi, returnable in one, month, petitioner to have

custody of the children.

CLAIMS FOR MAINTENANCE.

Ellen Elizabeth Gimbert made application under the Testator's Family Maintenance for an order

for maintenance from the estate of her mother, Ellen Grills, late of Rock Abbey, Arundel.

Applicant stated that she was 72 years of age, the widow of a railway employee. She had an old-

age pension. Her son, who was injured on military service and lived with her, had a pension of

£1/10/ per week. Mrs. Grills, who died at the age of 95 years, left an estate of £22,033. The

principal beneficiary of her will was West Maitland Grills, a son, to whom she left such of her

grazing property as had not previously been conveyed to him. To certain other members of her

family testatrix left the residue of her estate. To the applicant she left a legacy of £ 100.

An order was made that the applicant should be paid an annuity of £3 a week for life half the

burden to be borne by West Maitland Grills, and half by the residuary estate of the testatrix. It

was also ordered that the legacy of £100 to the applicant be Increased to £200. Applicant's costs

to be paid out of the estate as between party and party costs of the executors as between solicitor

and client also out of the estate, other costs to be borne by the parties.

Mr. George was one of the district's best know residents, having lived here all his live

He served several terms as a Crookwell Shire Councillor.

Mr. George was predeceased by his wife, Alice Alma, and is survived by his sons, Roy

(Crookwell NSW) Douglas (Glen Erin) and daughters Joan (South Australia) and Fay (Sydney).

The funeral service was conducted at St Bartholomew's Church, Crookwell NSW, yesterday

morning with interment in the Crookwell Cemetery.

“OBITUARY:

Mr. LC. George

Crookwell NSW recently lost one of its elderly citizens when Lyall Clarence George died

suddenly at his home at 69 Cowper Street Crookwell NSW. He died on May 3, 1990, at the age of

90 years. Lyall was the eldest of eleven children. He was the son of Stephen George and

Elizabeth Frances (nee Hamilton). He was born at "Hamilton Park," Crookwell NSW on March

20, 1900. His siblings were Stanley (deceased), Ida (Mrs. I. Anderson, deceased), Daphne (Mrs.

V. McGrath, Inverell), Doris (Mrs. H. Grove, Bundeena), Garney (deceased), Alfred (of

Crookwell NSW), Aubrey (deceased), Allan (deceased) and Heather (Mrs. S. Woodward,

Sydney). Lyall settled on his property at "Waterfalls," Crookwell NSW in the latter part of the

twenties. He was well known as a fruit and vegetable grower, and for his expertise as a shearer.

He served on the Crookwell NSW Share Council from 1941 - 1944; 1947 - 1950; 1961 -1962 and

I965 - 1974. He was also a member of the Crookwell NSW A.P. and H. Society for many years.

He was a keen exhibitor at local shows in fruit, vegetables and flowers, for which he won

numerous prizes. He was also a current member of the Taralga Show Society and the Crookwell

NSW Senior Citizens' Club at the time of his death. In his leisure time he enjoyed lawn bowls,

shooting and was a very keen fisherman. After convalescing from a serious heart attack Lyall and

his wife settled in Crookwell NSW in 1980. They took up residence at 69 Cowper Street. Lya11

Mr. Justice Maxwell In the Divorce Court to-day ordered John Albert Reeves, grazier, of Wheeo,

near Gunning, to pay £150 damages to a shearing contractor, whose wife he had stolen.

The contractor, Oswald Hamilton George, 46, Yass Street, Gunning, was also granted a decree

nisi against Amy Rosalie George on the ground of her adultery with Reeves.

Reeves was ordered to pay the costs of the action.

George originally claimed £2,000 from Reeves, but consented to accept £150 after a conference

between the parties before the case was heard.

Attempted murder charge

A Yass woman, who pleaded guilty to attempted murder, was placed on a three-year good

behavior bond, when she appeared in the Yass District Court on Monday.

Elsie Jean McCracken, 45, of Fife-Shire, Yass, was charged with attempting to discharged a

firearm with intent to murder her defacto husband, Gregory Stephen George. The Crown said the

offence took place near the Yass River on August 3, last year. The case was heard by His Honor

The death occurred of Mr. Neil Glenn Arnold of Clinton Street, Millicent, South

Australia, (formerly) of the Diamond, Crookwell NSW. As a result of a work

accident on Wednesday last. Mr. Arnold died when struck by a roll of paper at the

mill where he worked. Mr. Arnold was 32 years of age, the husband of Heather and

father of Troy (5) Trent (1).
