Flying Start ~ Numbers to 5 Everyone was so pleased be back at Flying Start after the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. We were right back into action on Monday practising numbers 1-5. During our reading of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle we discovered the healthy foods that the caterpillar ate ranged from 1-5. We carefully used scissors and glue to match the number of fruit to the correct numeral. Well done to everyone at Flying Start!

Basketball News Last Friday the girls and boys basketball teams travelled to Queanbeyan to participate in their first game of the PSSA basketball knockout competition. The boys team took to the court first, to play Queanbeyan West Public School. Despite Jesse Croker and Nate Cairncross making some great breaks, the boys were unable to score in the first quarter. The second quarter saw the boys settle into the game with some great passing from Sean Ward and Mason Kearney and with Connor Osborne scoring the team’s first basket and putting two points on the board. The third quarter saw three more points added to the scoreboard with a basket from Mathew Lang and a free throw from Nate Cairncross. The final quarter saw yet more great passing with Mason Kearney scoring our last basket of the game resulting in the final score of 7 to 49.

At the conclusion of the boys’ game it was the girls’ turn to take to the court to play Goulburn West Public School. The girls also took some time to settle into the game however, after some great passing, Emily Newman soon put some points on the board. The second quarter saw a build in the girls’ confidence with the girls’ play improving by the minute. Emily Newman and Georgie Lloyd both scored in this quarter. By the third quarter the girls were really into the swing of the game and as a result Mikeely Gray added to the score while Zandalee Reeves also added two baskets in quick succession. In the final quarter, the girls defended and attacked with persistence and enthusiasm and were rewarded with another basket from Emily Newman. The game ended with the score line reading 14-46.

Both teams played with determination and displayed all the elements of fair play. The improvement in the play of both teams from the first quarter to the fourth quarter was amazing. Both teams have every reason to be proud of their games. Well done basketballers!

Thank you to Megan McGregor for sharing her expertise and giving of her time so freely to coach both teams. Thanks also to parent drivers and supporters who, at very short notice, transported students to Queanbeyan. Without support such as this our teams would not have had the opportunity to play in this competition; it is greatly appreciated.

Student Forum Movie Afternoons The Student Forum is raising funds for additional sports equipment. As our Term 2 fundraiser we have decided to hold two movie afternoons, one for infants and one for primary. Entry will be free with funds

being raised through ‘candy bar’ purchases. Students will be able to purchase a Movie Combo of popcorn, popper and two Joy Stixx lollies for $3.00. On Monday 27

th June, primary

students will enjoy watching the movie ‘Bedtime Stories’, a hilarious comedy starring Adam Sandler. Both movies are rated G. We are looking forward to some fun end of term entertainment. The infants movie afternoon will be held on Tuesday 28

June and will feature the movie ‘Zootopia’, an animation that

revolves around the lives of various animals that live and thrive in the city.

Student Forum

Debating News On Monday of this week the Year 5 and the Year 6 debating teams travelled to Braidwood to take part in the education round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The Year 5 team participated in a closely fought debate on the topic “That we should have separate schools for smarter kids”. They convinced the adjudicators that this was not a viable proposition and therefore won the debate with the negative argument. Year 6 took the affirmative stance on the topic “That primary schools should set aside one day a week for kids to study subjects that interest them”. Despite a strong case they were unable to persuade their adjudicator to their way of thinking. Both teams now look forward to their next debate which will be against each other in the near future. The teams would like to thank the parents who drove them to Braidwood. Your support is appreciated.

State of Origin Social Our Term 3 social held on Wednesday evening, the same night as the second State of Origin game, was ‘Simply the Best’! About 70 primary students enjoyed iconic dances including Nutbush, YMCA and The Chicken Dance. Our social concluded at 7.30pm allowing students and parents time to get home and watch the game which, depending on which team you support, was extremely exciting or extremely disappointing!

Stage 2 Assembly Item – NAIDOC Week NAIDOC week is celebrated from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday, this week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This was also the main idea in Stage 2’s assembly item. Students re-enacted marches, protests and rallies that have been held dating as far back as the 1920’s. These perspectives were taken from both white Australians and the Indigenous people. Mr Eddie Koiki Mabo (played by Levi Woods and Isla Stephenson) presented his memorable speech, along with different strong Indigenous figures making their own impact on the performance. Bridging the Gap – Fred Reid: NAIDOC Visiting Performer On Friday 29

th July, Fred Reid will be visiting Crookwell

Public School. Fred’s mission is to bring about a better understanding of Aboriginal people and their culture. Fred, with the help of one or more of his children, delivers his message in a fun and positive way. His deep respect and knowledge of culture, along with his gentle, humorous rapport with students, make for a very enriching experience. The performance is tailored to a K-6 audience and participation is greatly encouraged in all programs. All sessions begin with an acknowledgement and welcome dance and conclude with question time. Welcome to the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is available to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools.

The Challenge this year opens on the 7th March 2016 and

closes on the 19th

August 2016.

At Crookwell Public all students in Kindergarten through to Year 2 are involved in the initiative and all their books will be read within individual classes and recorded online by their class teachers.

Students who want to continue with the Challenge in Years 3-6 are able to borrow the required books during library time and must record their own reading logs online. This process will be demonstrated to the students by teachers. Primary students must complete their online Student Reading Records by 19

th August 2016.

Students must read a varying number of books from a prescribed list of books.

2016 Semester 1 Reports – An Explanation Dear Parents/Carers,

On Monday 20th

June reports are being sent home for each student. Each year we have had to refine our reports to suit not only changes in curriculum, but also acting on feedback from staff and parents. Our reports must adhere to departmental guidelines in many respects.

One of the main focuses for our staff is to ensure consistency with our assessing and reporting. Our teachers have spent many sessions working together to analyse student work samples and evaluating the levels of achievement. Students are tracked on syllabus outcomes in order to identify where each child sits at this point in time for the grade expectations. These identify what the expected outcomes are for students by the end of the semester. Teachers can then determine the level of achievement for every student.

OVERALL LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT

Kindergarten reports:

Students will be identified in English and Mathematics by either above, at or below.

‘Below’ means that whilst your child is progressing,

further support is needed to ensure they continue to progress. They have not yet reached the expected level of achievement at this point in time.

‘At’ means that your child is working at the

expected level at this point in time and is progressing at a rate which will ensure continued growth.

‘Above’ means that your child would have thorough

knowledge and skills in that area. They would be working well beyond stage level.

Kindergarten students receive a comment describing their achievement in Early Stage 1 outcomes in Science and Technology, Human Society and Its Environment, Personal Development Health and Physical Education and Creative Arts.

Year 1 – Year 6 reports:

The Department of Education mandates that all student reports for grades 1-6 are to use a standard achievement rating scale. Below is our interpretation and how we will report to our families:

Outstanding Achievement For a student to attain Outstanding they would have an extensive knowledge and understanding of

the content and readily be able to apply this to other areas. They would be working on an individualised or adjusted learning program and be achieving well beyond stage level (i.e. if in Year 2 they would be

working at and achieving at Year 4 or higher).

High Achievement For a student to attain High they would have a thorough knowledge and understanding of content.

The student would be working at and achieving above grade level (i.e. if in Year 2 they would be

working at and achieving at Year 3 level).

Sound Achievement Students achieving Sound are working at achieving at their appropriate grade level (i.e. if in Year 2 they

are working at and achieving at Year 2 level). It is the expected level of achievement according to the

child’s grade.

Basic Achievement For a student to receive Basic they would have a basic knowledge of the content and be working at and achieving below grade level (i.e. if in Year 2

they would be working at and achieving a Year 1 level). Limited Achievement For a student to receive Limited they would have a very limited knowledge of content covered and be working at and achieving well below grade level,

even at an earlier stage (i.e. if in Year 4 they would be working at and achieving at Year 2 or lower). Parents should note that a ‘sound’ grade is a good grade! It means that your child is working where they should be at this point in time. EFFORT

All students will also receive an effort rating for each subject area. Effort reflects how well a student has tried, the persistence and determination to achieve at the best level of which they are capable. Effort will be rated as:

5 – Excellent 4 - Very Good 3 - Acceptable 2 - Needs Improving 1 - Little/No Effort I trust that this has provided you with some explanation of what to expect when sharing reports with your children. Any parents wishing for further clarification are most welcome to contact me. You will also find attached to the reports posted home, your child’s home and emergency contact details. Please review and send back to the school with the necessary changes that need to be made. It is important that we have current contact details in case of an emergency.

GRANT APPLICATIONS

The P&C needs your help to apply for grants. Our busy team is working hard to organise various fundraisers, stock and man the canteen and uniform shop and we really need someone dedicated in applying for grants on behalf of the P&C and school. We have two main areas of focus: 1

st priority is replacing our school laptops and 2

priority is upgrading our primary playground.

The school office can assist with information required to complete the forms. You don’t need to search for grants as the Upper Lachlan Council will add this person to their email distribution list, which is sent monthly to notify you of the current month’s grants available to apply for.
