Dear MMT Members and Friends,

It is now 12 months since Monmouth Music Theatre achieved charitable status and MMT goes from

strength to strength. We have been fortunate to receive a generous donation from Monmouth Masons.

Their support is invaluable and we are very grateful for their contribution of £1000.

We are also pleased to have been awarded £750 by Monmouth Town Council upon the formation of our

Youth Group. This grant cheque was recently presented by Andrea Pole, Chair of MMT, to Andrew

Griffiths, MMT Youth Director. It is a healthy start financially for the newly formed group and a

welcome contribution to kick start their production of “Joseph” which takes place in February.

On behalf of the youth group can I thank Lynda and Diane for working hard to

get us this grant? It allows us the freedom to make decisions for February

and future productions. The group is going well. News is travelling around

the town and we have attracted about 7/8 new members. Rehearsals are in full

swing for Joseph. It is going to be hard work but these youngsters are

mopping up everything that we throw at them. Some of the children are

becoming really confident with the singing, acting and dancing which can only

bode well for the future. As well as encouraging performance we have begun to

use many of the children s skills in other areas of the group. Harry Sully

has designed the poster for Joseph and is designing the set that the King

Family generously allowed us to borrow from the Narth and Josh Morgan is

assisting with choreography.

Thanks once again.

Community News Article

Monmouth Music Theatre

Monmouth Music Theatre (MMT) was founded in 1988 as Monmouth Operatic Society, originally focussing primarily on Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, but the society soon broadened its repertoire and became MMT. Since those early days, the society has produced a wide range of shows, such as Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow, Oklahoma, Calamity Jane, Annie Get Your Gun, My Fair Lady, Me and My Girl and, more recently, Oliver! The society now boasts some 35 adult members and has recently started a Youth section to capitalise on the talent and enthusiasm of the young people who joined the society to appear in Oliver. In addition to its ‘main’ annual production, which is usually staged at HMSG in the spring, MMT puts on an autumn concert, sometimes held at the Savoy and from time to time touring the show around local village halls. These concerts have featured many audience favourites from operas and popular musicals. Members of the cast of Oliver performed songs from the show at last year’s Wye Valley River Festival event in Llandogo.

MMT is open to all and is always on the lookout for new members. Don’t worry if you don’t think you can sing or act – enthusiasm is valued much more highly than talent and it never ceases to amaze how seemingly the most ragged of rehearsals can be transformed in just a few weeks into a highly polished show with just a sprinkle of that old stage magic. The youth section rehearses from 7pm on a Monday and the adults get together at 7.30 on a Wednesday, both at the Methodist Hall on St James’ St. In addition, we couldn’t stage our shows without the wonderful people who help out with various other aspects of the productions, such as backstage, front of house or wardrobe, so if you’d prefer to take on a role away from the spotlight then do come along and say hello.

MMT also has a healthy social aspect to it with recent fundraising activities including a curry and quiz night and coffee mornings in the Priory. Rehearsal nights invariably end with a visit to one of Monmouth’s hostelries. You may even have seen our entry in the Christmas Tree Festival recently, decorated with miniature posters from all of our performances.

Currently both adult and youth sections are busy rehearsing for forthcoming shows. On Saturday February 21st, MMT Youth presents two performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in St Mary’s Church at 3pm and 7pm. Then from Wednesday April 15th to Saturday April 18th, MMT will be performing Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate at HMSG. Showtime is 7.30pm.

For further information and tickets for our shows please check out our website www.monmouthmt.co.uk or the Monmouth Music Theatre page on Facebook. Alternatively drop us a line to [email protected], telephone Gay on 01600 740336 or Lynda on 01600 713303 (Lynda) or pop in on rehearsal night.

Message from the directors of ‘Kiss Me Kate’

This is our second production for Monmouth Music Theatre, following 'It's a Musical World' in 2013.

We have been directing plays and musicals for many years in Newport and Caldicot, and before that in

Cardiff, with a variety of productions such as ‘Hello Dolly’, ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Oliver’, ‘The Glass

Menagerie’, ‘The Long and the Short and the Tall’, ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ and ‘Proof’, but we are

now enjoying acting and directing in Monmouth, with our most recent production being the play ‘Blood

Brothers’ at the Savoy Theatre.

The musical ‘Kiss Me Kate’ is a delightful show, full of witty dialogue, Shakespearian blank verse and

memorable songs, including ‘Another Op’nin’, Another Show’, ‘Wunderbar’, ‘So In Love’, ‘Too Darn

Hot’, ‘Always true to you in my fashion’, ‘From this moment on’ and ‘Brush up your Shakespeare’. It is

generally regarded as Cole Porter’s finest show.

We are very much enjoying working with the cast. Rehearsals are great fun and we are sure this will be

another excellent MMT show!
