Season’sGreetings

Crow Times DeCember, 2016 2

Two of the best golf courses in Thailand are the Siam Country Club, which conducts LPGA events and the Amata Spring Country Club of the ‘Thailand Open’ fame. This private Club with just around 300 members is immaculately maintained and lends itself well to all levels of players. Four different tee boxes not only vary the distance to the green but also successfully bring in or take out of play, water and sand hazards and other obstacles on the course.

The signature 17th hole is fascinating in that it is an island green and the island is a floating one, which is moved around during major tournaments. Once you drive to the green, there is a boatman standing by to take you across.

The chic caddies, though a little low on English, certainly know their job of taking care of the player and the clubs, apart from a good understanding of the local conditions. Roving marshals enforce the pace of play simply and effectively by making sure that every hole is played out in under 15 minutes.

To make golfing a thoroughly enjoyable experience, we just need a few ingredients – a well maintained golf course with true greens, clean and smart caddies, rules and etiquette to maintain the pace of play all of which our club is working towards in right earnest.

Happy Golfing! Happy New Year!

Season’s Greetings!

New membership cards are being issued at a brisk pace at the BGC office. Members may please collect the same. The new membership cards come with several security features for better controls and card management.

The laying of the pipeline from the OCH gate to the storage tank at NCH will be completed through December. BWSSB will be supplying treated water @ Rs. 25 per thousand litres

on a pay by use basis. This should completely alleviate our water shortage issues.

Both, the Blue Bell Kiosk and Food World Store will be operational in December.

Following the footsteps of the successes of Aditi Ashok in the professional circuit, we have another young achiever in Anushka Borkar, aged 12, who came second in the C Category at the Eighth Albatross International Junior Golf Championship India 2016. She also stood second in the IGU Eastern India Ladies & Junior Girls Golf Championship at RCGC Kolkata.

A special General Body meeting will be convened in early January to address the financial issues facing the Club.

With the active support from my Managing Committee colleagues, many new initiatives have been taken keeping in mind the requirements, preferences and aspirations of members from all age groups.

I wish all the members a very Happy New Year and Happy Golfing on a green golf course in summer 2017!

fresh air and the greenery and it’s beautiful…

Just you, the bike and the road.

They say meditation is therapeutic; this is a beautiful form of it.

For the 5 to 8 hours that you ride, nothing else matters. Your concentration has to be absolute, yet you mange to take in the beauty that nature has to offer.

We ride to go see temples, dams and forests but the main aim is to find quaint and exotic places to eat. Places that are not on any map or travelogue.

What wonderful food we have found over the many rides!

And yes a lot of planning goes on, preparing bikes, upgrading it, new equipment to be added on a regular basis, all of it makes for a lot of fun.

Being the age that I am, speed is not a criterion any more. Destinations are not important, we halt where we feel comfortable; sometimes even stay the night in a small lodge before we move on next morning.

This write up won’t be complete without mentioning the friendships that I have forged.

It’s a brotherhood, my buddies with whom I have endless conversations at the end of the day. The hundreds of Whatsapp messages that go on back and forth.

We love what we do, no doubt about that.

There is a German phrase for what we do, “bummel”… It means “a leisurely wander with no fixed destination but only with a fixed time of return.”

That’s what we do, we bummel.

- C.s. Harsha

My love affair for the motorcycle started years ago, during college days, when I managed to borrow my uncle’s Road King…

As all youngsters, I was enamored by the racing greats, like Barry Sheene and Kevin Schwantz and I fell into the quest for speed. Was bitten by the bug badly…

I took part in races, rallies, hill climbs and every kind of competition.

Though I never won anything, it opened my mind to the love of the great outdoors and I learned to be highly self-reliant.

Soon I began the noble pursuit of that damned golf ball.

I played a lot of golf. Loved the game so much, that it was an affair that lasted for over twenty years.

The bike was forgotten.

Recently I managed to lay my hands on a Triumph Bonneville and wondered where the love had gone.

Met a few like-minded characters and now we head out regularly seeking the wind, the

A Veteran's Tale

wives and can’t do without either of them. The first at home, the second his profession and the third being golf. Having withdrawn from active participation in the profession, he now manages to play twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays.

A lot of people make fun of golf not knowing the accuracy and mental stability needed to even complete one round of 18 holes. In addition to golf Mr. Rao keeps fit by regular practice of yoga and other forms of exercise. The four-balls that he has played with over the years include a lot of illustrious names including Sri. Dharmaveera, Sri. Ramakrishna Hegde, Dr. H. G. V. Reddy, Sri. V. C. Ramachandran, Sri. N. G. Iyengar, Sri. V. W. Bhojwani, Sri. S. Mohan Singh, P. K. Rajagopal, family members of the VST Group. Most of his playing partners happen to be his clients. He has served the club for a few years in the capacity of a treasurer and recalls that at one point BGC had issued debentures to raise funds to tide over cash flow issues. All debentures were redeemed on schedule. He fondly recalls the year when K. N. Shanth Kumar was the Captain of

BGC and he was honoured for 50 years of membership at BGC. He is delighted to see lots of ladies playing golf these days and is very happy that his daughter, son and even grandson also play golf whenever they can.

Over the years, Mr. Rao has seen the BGC metamorphose into the beautiful golf course it is today. Infact, he proudly says he has played on browns, greens and blacks as well. He believes BGC is one of the finest golf clubs and is very appreciative of members of the managing committee and office bearers over the years who contribute time and effort in making BGC such a great club.

Mr. K. P. Rao, founder and partner at K. P. Rao & Co. Chartered Accounts is a doyen amongst the chartered accountants in the city. He started his career in 1952 and with his dedication and professional excellence garnered a list of clients that reads like the who’s who of Bangalore.

He has had a hectic professional life and the only relaxation he allowed himself was a Sunday game of golf over the last 60 years. Having become a member of BGC in 1956, he rarely missed a Sunday game and a quick drink on the 19th before heading home to spend quality time with his family. He jocularly says he has three
