"If anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules." 2 Timothy 2:5

Welcome to Crown Athletics!

Crown Athletics is a not-for-profit organization established in 2005 for the benefit of home educated students who are interested in participating in competitive sports programs. We offer a wide range of sports programs for homeschool athletes including cheerleading, cross country, baseball, basketball, fencing, football, golf, soccer, softball, swim, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. Our team name/mascot is the Knights, and our colors are navy, maroon and silver. For more information regarding Crown Athletics, please visit www.crown-athletics.org.

We provide home school students with consistent and biblical reinforcement through athletic competition. Parents work with us to help their child build character and a strong work ethic through athletics, and encourage them to accept growing responsibility as they mature. We provide a vital athletic experience that facilitates encouragement, confidence in one's ability and discipline. Parents play a vital role in their student's athletic performance, and in their emotional, social and spiritual development. In cooperation with parents, we seek to help build strong, confident, yet humble servants for Christ.

Out Staff

The Crown Operating Board is made up of nine home school parents. All members are actively involved in the home school community and their local churches. Each has demonstrated leadership skills, a servant heart, and interest and experience in various sports. The Operating Board works closely with the Athletic Coordinator and the committee members of each individual sport to organize and direct the programs. Each member serves as a liaison for one or more of the Crown Athletics’ programs and the football program operating board representative is Ben Lee. The Crown High School League Coordinator is Wes Cantrell. The Crown High School Football Committee is Chairman is Ben Lee, Treasurer Angie Hunter, Communications/Volunteer Coordinator, Scott and Kim Smith, Game Day Assistant/Spirit Wear Coordinator, Autumn Hall, Field Operations, Michael VonBorstel and the Athletic Director is Michelle Rutledge.

CROWN ATHLETICS ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND RULES

1. Christian home schooling families who are abiding by all Georgia laws governing home schooling programs may participate in the Crown Athletics High School Football program.

2. The High School Football program is for male students in the 9th – 12th grades.

3. Boys must not have reached their 19th birthday prior to May1st preceding their year of participation. Students have eight consecutive semesters or four consecutive years of eligibility from the date of entry into the ninth grade. This means that once a student designates they are in high school (9th grade), their eligibility “clock” starts ticking. (Please note that students may take 9th grade level courses while in the 8th grade and not be considered a 9th grader.)

4. All MS and HS players are required to obtain a physical and turn in the signed Physician’s Medical Consent form. Players will not be permitted on the practice for playing field without this form on file.

GFC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND RULES

1. BOYS ONLY: Only eligible boys are permitted to play in the GFC. Girls are not eligible to play in the GFC. If a player does not meet all the requirements found in the GFC Eligibility Requirements, then he is not eligible to play in the GFC. If a player is found to be ineligible, the team will forfeit all games in which the player participated and the team could be removed from the league.

2. Boys must not turn nineteen (19) years of age prior to May 1st of the football season. They are not eligible if they

turn nineteen (19) years of age prior to May 1st of the football season.

3. Boys must be homeschooled or attend a homeschool co-op (such as schools that reside in a church or meet in other building structures), attend a school that currently does not have a football program, or a Christian School or private school that is a member of the GFC. Each team is allowed to have up to 4 players who attend public schools. This is not cumulative meaning a team can have 4 one year but isn’t allowed 8 the next year.

4. Boys who have graduated or received a GED, from a public, private, Christian, co-op, or homeschool, are not

eligible. Any boy who participates in a graduation ceremony but does not receive a diploma, must notify, in writing, the GFC office of their intent to participate in a graduation ceremony. However, if you have met requirements needed to graduate, then you will also be deemed ineligible.

5. Any boy who has used up his four (4) years of high school playing eligibility is not eligible to play in the GFC.

Example: a boy would not be eligible if he attended four (4) years of public high school, did not graduate and now is being homeschooled or attends a private or Christian school.

6. If an individual from a public, private or Christian school is fourteen (14) years of age or older and wishes to play in

the GFC (and has a past history of playing football) he must submit a transcript and proof of eligibility (other necessary documents to show eligibility).

7. A boy who turns fifteen (15) prior to May 1 will be considered a freshman. This will determine his eligibility in the

GFC from this point forward. Any boy who transfers from a public, private or Christian School will be eligible based on his transcript year.

8. Boys who desire to play in the GFC must be living at home under the authority of their parents or legal guardian. If

living with a legal guardian, then proof of guardianship must be submitted along with the boy’s eligibility paperwork.

9. Boys transferring from (the) public, private or Christian schools, who wish to play in the GFC, must provide proof of homeschooling by submitting their “INTENT TO HOME SCHOOL” letter which is required by the State of Georgia.

10. Adding players to a team roster (the GFC) after the initial start of the GFC season will be allowed until September

15th. Before a boy is allowed to play in any GFC games, all required paperwork must be submitted and approved by the GFC office. Player approval will be made by the GFC within 48 hours.

11. Players enrolled in online high school classes or online schools are eligible to play in the GFC if they meet the other requirements. The player must provide transcript(s) from previous school(s) attended along with appropriate GFC paperwork. Player must submit a list of classes enrolled in for that semester (whenever they start online courses).

12. If a player on a GFC team enrolls in a public or private school with a football program, that player can continue to play for the GFC team. He will count towards Item 3 above (4 total per year).

Refund Policy & Non-Payment of Registration Fees Crown registration fees are determined by the individual committees governing their program. Registration fees will be refunded at 100% if an athlete withdraws from the program in writing before the first day of practice minus any expenses incurred for equipment, uniform, camp fees, spring training or other items that cannot be recovered by the program on behalf of that athlete. Crown Committees will determine the payment options of these fees for their individual programs. Participants who have not paid their registration before first day of practice will be removed from the roster. Removal from the roster means this player will be benched for the entire season. Participants who leave the program without full payment of their registration fee will be ineligible for try outs and/or participation in any Crown program until payment is made in full. Committees will report all non-paying participants to the AD. Hardships: The Crown Football program has a discretionary amount budgeted for hardships and/or scholarships. Families experiencing a financial hardship must contact the Committee Chairman or AD and schedule a meeting with the Committee to discuss the circumstances of the hardship before a determination can be made regarding alternative fee arrangements. The terms of special fee arrangements must be put in writing and signed by the parents and committee.

Game Day Admission Policies: Volunteers are required to pay admission upon check in. MS and JV Football players and cheerleaders attending V games must pay admission at the gate (they will not receive free admission with their jersey on). JV parents wishing to observe JV practices may do so outside of the gate entrance of the practice field. JV Players must pay admission to enter the Varsity game after practices. Free Admission is only to the following and a list will provided to gate volunteers:

TKA Executive Board Members Crown Operating Board Members Booster Club Members/AD Crown FB Coaches, Spouses and children under 18 Crown Cheer Coaches and Cheerleaders cheering at the game Crown FB and Cheer Committee Members attending their own games (spouses and children must pay

Fundraisers

Fundraisers or sponsorship drives may be established during the year by the football committee as needed. Families must agree to participate in any group fundraising activities or pay an equivalent net monetary amount as established by the committee.

Uniform and Press Code Each player will be issued a set of protective equipment that will be provided and maintained by Crown Athletics. This equipment set is owned and safety certified by Crown. Participants must complete and sign a receipt form during the issuance of any equipment. A refundable $500.00 equipment check will be required during equipment distribution. The deposit check will be returned during or after the equipment collection day, when all equipment is returned in reasonable condition. In the event that all equipment is not returned by collection day, and the Equipment Manager has not granted an extension, the deposit will be forfeited and the check will be cashed. Natural wear and tear of equipment is expected, however, abuse of equipment furnished by Crown Athletics will not be tolerated. A fee will be assessed at season's end to repair and/or replace equipment damaged as a result of abuse or neglect.

Players will be issued two game jerseys. In the event that a game jersey is lost or damaged due to negligence, a fee of $75.00 will be charged for a replacement jersey. All uniform items are property of Crown Athletics.

Each student must dress in assigned practice and game apparel when participating in Crown athletic events. Team uniforms are to be worn neatly and as designed. The coach will determine the uniform requirements for practices and games, and all players must follow these guidelines. Crown athletes should present a neat and cohesive appearance during games. For safety purposes, absolutely no jewelry is to be worn during practices or games.

Crown Athletics football representatives reserve the right to define inappropriate attire. Some dress code issues may not be covered under specific guidelines of this packet. Therefore, please be aware that all decisions regarding dress code for Crown Athletics football events, and what constitutes a violation of it, will ultimately be determined by the football coaches and committee. Parental support of Crown Athletics representatives in these matters is greatly appreciated.

Training

Our football coaches will be the primary instructors and supervisors for all football training. The skills taught will be matched to the developmental abilities of the participants. It is understood that great caution will be taken by our coaches to prevent accident or injury, but neither they nor any representative of Crown Athletics shall be held responsible in case of player accident or injury.

Transportation & Supervision

Coaches and/or committee members will be present at all practices, games and activities, but parents may also be asked to help with supervision as needed. No athlete can be left alone at any practice or game site due to the potential for injury and the possibility of inclement weather. Parents will need to pick up their players promptly following activities. Players will be supervised for 15 minutes as they await pickup, after this time the coaches will need to leave. Please notify the coaches in advance if your player will be riding home with another family or other arrangements have been made. Remember to keep the coaches' phone numbers handy in case of emergency. When possible, team transportation will be provided for all away games/events. Participants will sign a liability waiver when registering online. Otherwise, participants are responsible for their transportation to and from the games. Food and transportation costs will be the responsibility of each individual and parents

Page 7: Crown Athletics HS Football Information Packet 2013

may make carpool arrangements to transport players to the games as needed. Further details regarding team transportation will be provided during the season. Insurance & Medical Release

Each player must have medical insurance in case of injury. Proof of insurance must be provided upon request and/or the first day of practice.

All students who have paid their registration fees are covered by a supplemental insurance policy. This policy is designed to assist with any expenses resulting from injuries sustained while participating in a Crown Athletic event. All claims should be filed with the student's primary insurance carrier. A portion of the expenses, not covered by the primary policy, will be covered by the supplemental policy provided through Crown Athletics.

A medical release form must be submitted to the committee prior to any physical contact at practices. This form is due by the first day of practice. A copy of the medical release is attached.

Behavior

Crown Athletics and the Knights Football Program promote a wholesome family atmosphere for players and their families. Vulgar or abusive language, unsportsmanlike conduct, or fighting will not be tolerated. Vandalism or destruction of football equipment or property at game or practice sites will not be tolerated. The Head Coach has the authority to place athletes on disciplinary suspension as a result of inappropriate actions by family members or players.

It is our desire to build a quality team, one that everyone can be proud of, including the Lo rd. Therefore, we request that each player put forth the serious effort required in order to be confidently prepared for the athletic season. Coaches expect 100% participation and effort from every team member.

Discipline: Discipline is a necessary part of any athletic endeavor. Discipline builds character and creates a unified team. Therefore, we remind our team members that "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inher itance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Jesus Christ you are serving." Colossians 3:23-24.

Respect: Players should show respect to adults at all times. A title (Mr., Mrs. Coach, etc.) should be used when addressing an adult. Team members must also treat each other with respect, kindness, and compassion just as God commands in Matthew 7:12, "So in everything do to others what you would have them do to you."

Punctuality: All players are expected to be ON TIME for each practice, game and team activity. Attendance is required in order to prepare for the season. It is very important that members be on time for practice and to depart for games. A meeting time and location will be announced prior to away games, and everyone must be ready to leave when the caravan departs.

Absences: Regular participation at practice is mandatory. Failure to attend practices may result in loss of playing time, team privileges and/or awards. Excuses for absence include severe sickness such as fever or vomiting, or a family emergency. In these instances, a parent should contact one of the football coaches or high school football committee chairperson as soon as possible in order to let them know of the situation. We request that if a football player is only mildly ill, they attempt to come and observe practice so that they will not miss any new material being presented. Attention: Players should be listening when instructions are given and pay close attention to the coaches anytime they are speaking. Coaches expect wholehearted effort during practice. Eating, socializing, sitting down or leaving the practice area without permission is not allowed. If infractions occur, it is up to the coaches' discretion regarding what type of disciplinary consequences will follow.

Page 8: Crown Athletics HS Football Information Packet 2013

Running laps or other types of physical exercise may be used as disciplinary measures. If misbehavior continues, a parent conference may need to be scheduled.

Game Time: No eating is allowed during the game except at half time. Refreshments will be provided by the half-time snack coordinator for the week. Players should have a designated place to keep their personal belongings during the game. Coaches will not take responsibility for such items. During the game, team members should keep their attention focused on the field at all times.

Players should not fraternize with cheerleaders or acquaintances during games. They must never openly criticize or degrade opposing team members. Whether winning or losing, Crown athletes are expected to maintain a positive attitude and behave in a Christ-like manner. Opposing teams should always be congratulated at games’ end. Although we may encounter other athletes, parents and coaches who do not behave in a Christ-like manner, we must determine to keep our standards high and set an example for those around us. Remember always that we are representing not only Crown Athletics, but also the Lord Jesus Christ.

Weekly Exercise and Devotions

Crown players are expected to be in good physical condition during the athletic season. Therefore, it is important that they maintain a fitness regimen throughout the year. The coaches will provide direction regarding exercise that will help increase endurance, stamina, flexibility and cardio strength.

Not only should the "outward man" be in shape, but the "inward man" needs exercise also! Football practices may include a short devotional and prayer. Members may each have opportunity to lead devotions and prayer for the team.

Playing Time

Crown Athletics does not guarantee playing time during a game. We are a competitive team and playing time and position assignment are determined by our coaching staff. This is typically based on attendance at practice, work ethic, experience at a particular position, and coach discretion in making sure the player can be effective and remain safe at their assigned position. One our coaches wrote a letter addressing this topic and we have included it below for your review.

I am writing to share my thoughts related to some recent parental inquiries. I understand and respect the parental questions and concerns related to certain players’ lack of playing time. However, as a long-term coach and parent of players, my perspective is a bit different. To begin with my top priority as a coach is not winning. It is the development of these young men (personally, spiritually, physically, to their potential and as football players); as well as the development of a team for this season and the future Crown football seasons. We have chosen (at this age/middle school level of football), not to have try-outs or cut players. This allows participation for various reasons, but also adds to coaching responsibility and concern as we endeavor to match players in drills with similar age, size, or skill level. This is to prevent injury and give each player the opportunity to compete, grow-develop where they are. It’s important to note that each season we have 5-6 players that would not make the team (would be cut) if we did this like most other Crown athletic teams (Examples are Crown basketball, baseball, etc). As a Coach, I also have criteria for putting a player in practice drills or in games:

1. Can they physically/mentally do the job (position/responsibility)? 2. Can they do this without endangering themselves (w/injury)? 3. *Have they proven themselves in practice attendance, effort, drills, and conditioning? 4. Will their playing time or participation hurt the team by taking up the opportunity for growth, development or experience of a

player that is giving more effort, has earned the opportunity, or is proving to have greater potential (for later in the season, or next year)?

5. Important note-some players that don’t meet all these criteria are given personal coaching instruction during some of our practices. As coaches, we chose/agreed to help these kids because these players are not yet physically capable of performing the duties of their positions in real game situations. We are trying to get them ready for potential 5th quarter play, later in the season play or even next year.

Parents should also understand it is universally normal for football experiences to repeat in 1-3 year cycles, as players go to

Page 9: Crown Athletics HS Football Information Packet 2013

another higher level of competition. At every age or level of play, most players practice with little or no game playing time 1-2 years, before participating 1 year consistently (as a starter or team role player); and then after that, some may have the opportunity to start both offense and defense, or excel as a leader and a great player. This is the normal way of things (mainly because of earlier mentioned criteria or developmental purposes). My own children have practiced entire football seasons while only playing a few plays or minutes for Crown; but as they developed they were able to play more in a 2nd or 3rd season. My own son played 4 plays his first year as a 6th grader (1 offense, and 3 defense plays), and was almost hurt on 2 of those plays. I explained to him what I written here every single week as he asked me why he did not get to play in more games & why I would not put him in the game. It’s important to also note 2 other things:

1. We have some 2nd and 3rd team players that through the previously mentioned criteria, have earned a position on special teams ahead of better players that start on offense or defense.

2. “Offensive” substitution is much more limited and difficult, as we must work for proper execution, consistency, game experience and confidence to be prepared for better teams and some difficult games ahead. We rarely have very many returning offensive starters on our middle school team and so offensive play can be limited to those players who are grasping/understanding the offensive plays in practice and need game experience in playing those offensive positions.

In conclusion, football is unlike any other sport. It is mentally demanding, physically difficult, & can be very dangerous. These are magnified at the middle school level with the vast differences in height/weight and seasons of puberty in these young men. Because of this, there are some players every year that I personally would rather not put in the game at all until they grow & develop more. In 7th grade, I was put in 1 play when our middle school team (7-9th gr) was winning and broke my ankle (6 months in a cast). We desire the best experience for these young players, but we must be very aware of safety concerns and exercise patience with the learning/development of these young athletes. This is especially true when it’s their 1st year playing tackle football and/or they are small or new to the team. Please know that I share these thoughts with sincere appreciation & deep respect for who you are, what you do as parents, and for your son’s safety, personal development and football experience. May the Lord help us all as we endeavor to honor HIM and serve these young men. Thanks & Blessings, Coach Chip Buhler

Conflict Resolution

As Christians, we should seek to resolve conflict in an appropriate and Christ-honoring way, attempting to resolve all concerns or disputes promptly and peacefully. Parents should address concerns relating to their child or the team with the coaches before discussing them with other students and parents. If a resolution does not result from a parent and coach conference, a parent or coach is encouraged to address the issue with a football committee member or members, in private. Please make every attempt to arrange such meetings with coaches or committee members in private AWAY from an athletic event and on a separate day if possible. If the committee's resolution is not acceptable to the parent or coach, either may appeal to the Athletic Coordinator or bring the matter to the Crown Operating Board for intervention.

Parents Volunteers Parent involvement in the football program is a must! Volunteer parent positions are outlined below and online sign-up will be made available to participating families. 60 Volunteer Positions need to be filled for each HOME game (this does not include Trash Duty by JROTC). At least one member from each family is REQUIRED to volunteer at EVERY home game. Parents will sign up online for three volunteer positions. There is no guarantee that volunteers will be assigned the positions of choice based on the needs of the team. Once registration is complete the Volunteer Coordinator will produce a schedule and email it to all volunteers. Volunteers are required to pay admission upon check in. Volunteers who will be working on the field or in the press box will be given a clearance pass. Only coaches and volunteers with clearance passes will be allowed on the field. A $100 refundable check will be collected from each family on equipment day. Players will not be issued a helmet if they do not have their volunteer check. This volunteer check will be cashed if a volunteer fails to show up

Page 10: Crown Athletics HS Football Information Packet 2013

STATEMENT OF FAITH & CEREMONIAL EVENTS

Our Statement of Faith is based on fundamental Christian beliefs that we strongly support as the foundation of our organization. Crown Athletics does not promote or endorse any particular denomination. We desire to remain united in the salvation and love of Christ, avoiding any dissension that may be caused by denominational distinctive. All athletes wishing to participate in this program must agree to respect our beliefs, be compliant and participate during prayers and displays of patriotism, and not be disruptive of our right to conduct these traditional and ceremonial events.

• We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God. (II Timothy 3:15; II Peter 1:21)

• We believe there is only one God, eternally existent in three persons—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:1; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30)

• We believe in the of Christ (John 10:33) • His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:35) • His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15; 7:26) • His miracles (John 2:11) • His vicarious and atoning death (I Corinthians 15:3; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 2:9) • His resurrection (John 11:25; I Corinthians 15:4) • His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19) • His personal return in power and glory (Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11) • We believe that men are justified on the single ground of faith in the shed blood of Christ and that only

by God's grace and through faith alone we are saved. (John 3:16-19; 5:24; Romans 3:23; 5:8-9; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5)

• We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation (John 5:28,29)

• We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:9; I Corinthians 12:12-13; Galatians 3:26, 28)

• We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a Godly life. (Romans 8:13-14; I Corinthians 3:16; 6:19-20; Ephesians 4:30; 5:18)

We hope you enjoy your experience with us! Our goal is to make this program one that will honor the Lord and bless the homeschool community. Please feel free to contact us at any time with your ideas or questions. We are here to serve you!

CROWN ATHLETICS

Participant Code of Conduct

“If anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules.” 2 Timothy 2:5

At Crown Athletics, we are looking for homeschool athletes who are committed to Christ and biblical principles of behavior. We desire for our athletes to serve as positive examples in the community and as role models for younger students who observe their behavior. The opportunity to be involved in a Crown Athletics sports program is a privilege, and athletes are expected to behave in an exemplary manner. Participating students and parents must respect our foundational Statement of Faith, and athletes must abide by the following code of conduct:

I will behave in such a way that my coach and team members can entrust me with responsibility and leadership.

I will treat others with respect at all times, especially adults and those who have been given authority over me.

I will not lie, cheat, steal or engage in any other dishonest or unsportsmanlike conduct on or off the field.

I will fulfill my commitment to the coach and my team, being on time for practices and games and completing the season to the best of my ability.

I will work hard as a home educated student to complete my studies and assignments as required by my parents/teachers during

the time I am participating in this sports program.

I will be a loyal team player and put the good of the team above personal glory.

I will be gracious in victory and accept defeat with dignity.

I will not engage in disrespectful conduct or speech including profanity, obscene gestures, offensive remarks, taunting, boasting, or other actions that demean individuals or harm the name of Christ.

I will treat coaches, referees or other game officials with respect and will not argue with official calls or decisions during the game

or following an event.

I will exercise self control on and off the field and will not provoke or participate in fights or show signs of excessive temper or frustration when I am disappointed or angry.

I will maintain a healthy lifestyle and will not participate in the use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs, nor will I engage in any unnatural

means to lose, gain or maintain weight or muscle.

I will maintain a sexually pure lifestyle.

I will honor the true nature of sportsmanship and play by the rules and not participate in any form of gambling or deception.

I will be open to instruction and be willing to listen to fair criticism from my coach(es).

I will never intentionally harm another player or engage in reckless behavior that could cause injury to myself or others.

I will promote unity among my team and will not participate in the spread of gossip or criticism regarding my coach, team member s or others associated with this program.

If I have a valid concern, I will handle it in a biblical manner through the proper channels, first going to my parent for counsel.

I will be a supportive member of Crown Athletics as an organization and an encouragement to all participating athletes, coaches

and committee members.

Crown Athletics’ Membership and Eligibility Rules

Membership: Crown Athletics is open to Kings’ Academy students and homeschool students in the state of Georgia. Participation is subject to the following:

▪ Participants must be abiding by all Georgia homeschool laws. ▪ Participants must meet the age and eligibility requirements of Crown Athletics and sport

conference. ▪ Participants must attend any mandatory clinics and try out for a spot on the team as

required by each program. ▪ Participants must sign a form stating their respect for the association’s statement of faith,

and their intention to abide by the code of conduct, program policies and procedures pertaining to each sport.

Crown Athletics’ High School Player Eligibility Rules are as follows: A student must not have reached his/her 19th birthday prior to May 1st, preceding their year of

participation. Students have eight consecutive semesters or four consecutive years of eligibility

from the date of entry into the ninth grade. This means that once a student designates they are in

high school (9th grade), the four years of eligibility “clock” starts ticking. (Please note that students

may take 9th grade level courses while in the 8th grade and not be considered a 9th grader.)

Students must remain living at home, and if taking college courses, must also be dually enrolled in

HOMESCHOOL studies.

Students must not “walk” during Senior Recognition at games until they are actually graduating

from high school. Players will be required to complete a “Senior Exit Form” once these eligibility

limitations have been met, and this will serve as communication that their participation with Crown

Athletics has ended.
