Welcome to Crown of Life! We’re glad you are with us today! We pray that the message from God’s Word in today’s service blesses you with God’s grace and guidance through our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Today’s Worship Focus: The Mystery of the Trinity

This Sunday of the church year has been designated as “Holy Trinity Sunday” since the fourteenth century. Today we celebrate the mystery and majesty of our Triune God, who has revealed himself as three distinct persons yet one God. Although this mystery is beyond our human understanding, we worship and marvel at the God whose very existence is greater than our understanding!

Participation in Holy Communion

Crown of Life practices member communion. The Bible teaches us that participating together in Holy Communion is a public statement of unity among its recipients (see 1 Corinthians 10:17). When the Bible speaks about unity, it describes a complete unity in what we believe and teach (see Matthew 28:19-20 and

Romans 16:17). For this reason, we invite to the Lord’s Supper all those who have expressed unity with our church’s teachings through membership at Crown of Life or one of our sister churches in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) or the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS).

If you are a guest from another Lutheran or Christian church denomination, we don’t want to be presumptuous and put you in the position of stating your agreement with our beliefs before you have had a chance to learn more. We would like to work with you to reach a genuine unity in faith so that you can join us for the Lord’s Supper in the future. For more information, please speak with our pastor after the service or at another time that is convenient for you. He would be delighted to speak with you and to work with you so that you can join us for Holy Communion in future services.

Practical Notes

Restrooms: Restrooms are located down the hallway toward the school wing of the building. As you exit the church sanctuary, turn to your left and walk down the hallway to access the restrooms.

For Families with Young Children: Children’s activity sheets are available on the table in the center of the church lobby. Families may use the Quiet Room at the left (west) back corner of the sanctuary as needed during the service; speakers in the room allow those inside to hear the service.

Ministry Adjustments: For a description of how we have adjusted worship to address Coronavirus concerns, please refer to page 20 (the back cover) of this booklet. For a description of the way we have adjusted the distribution of Holy Communion to address Coronavirus concerns, please read the instructions on page 14 of this booklet.

Dialogue for Trinity Sunday

Minister: In the name of the Father and of the ✠ Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Congregation: Amen. I believe that God created me and all that exists, and that he gave me my body and soul, eyes, ears and all my members, my mind and all my abilities. Luther’s Small Catechism

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11:3 God still preserves me by richly and daily providing clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, spouse and children, land, cattle, and all I own, and all I need to keep my body and life.

The Lord makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth. Psalm 104:14

I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord.

When the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4-5

Christ has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver, but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death.

The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.

No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. John 3:5-6 In the same way, the Holy Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:4-6

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! From him and through him and for him are all things.

To him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:33,36

The congregation sings:

As it was in the be-gin-ning, is now, and will be for-ev - er. A - men.

THE WORD

Prayer of the Day Let us pray.

Almighty God and Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, filling and renewing all creation by your eternal Spirit, and manifesting your saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ: In mercy cleanse our hearts and lips that, free from doubt and fear, we may ever worship you, one true immortal God, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, living and reigning, now and forever.

Amen. Be seated.

First Reading Genesis 1:1–2:3 The Triune God creates the world

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

Page 7: Crowned with Blessing! - WordPress.com · 2020. 6. 7. · 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God

7

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. NIV

Second Reading 2 Corinthians 13:11-14 The Triune God blesses us

11 Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All God’s people here send their greetings. 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the

Holy Spirit be with you all. NIV

Sermon Based on Matthew 28:16-20

A Three-Part Mission from our Three-in-One God:

Go! … Baptize! … Teach!

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them

to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” NIV

Confession of Faith Excerpts from the Athanasian Creed

The Athanasian Creed is a fifth-century Christian confession of faith that was written to defend the Bible’s teaching about the three persons of the Triune God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and the two natures of Jesus Christ (true God, true man). The excerpts below come from the section that speaks about the Trinity. A translation of the entire Athanasian Creed is found on pages 132-133 in Christian Worship.

The minister and congregation speak the Creed responsively. The congregation speaks the bold text.

Whoever wishes to be saved must, above all else, hold to the true Christian faith. Whoever does not keep this faith pure in all points will certainly perish forever.

Now this is the true Christian faith: We worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, Without mixing the persons or dividing the divine being. For each person—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—is distinct, but the deity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory and coeternal in majesty.

What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit. The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; The Father is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; The Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal; yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is eternal, just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three who are infinite, but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infinite.

In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, the Holy Spirit is almighty; yet they are not three who are almighty, but there is one who is almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord. For just as Christian truth compels us to confess each person individually to be God and Lord, so the true Christian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or three Lords.

The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeds from the Father and the Son. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.

Page 11: Crowned with Blessing! - WordPress.com · 2020. 6. 7. · 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God

11

And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater or inferior, But all three persons are coequal and coeternal, so that, in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be worshipped as one God and one God worshipped as three persons.

Whoever wishes to be saved must have this conviction of the Trinity. Be seated.

THE SACRAMENT

Stand.

Exhortation

Our Lord Jesus has given us a Holy Supper in which we receive his true body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. In this supper, we celebrate the gift of his redemption, we bear witness to the fellowship we share as confessors of the truth, and we proclaim his death until he returns. Let us celebrate and receive this Sacrament in Christ’s name and according to his command.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Words of Institution Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my ✠ body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my ✠ blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

Amen.

Distribution Holy Communion will be distributed by continuous distribution to respect social distancing recommendations from local health agencies. Communicants are ushered forward to the altar in a single line via the center aisle. Those seated on the right half (baptismal font side) of the church will be communed first, followed by those on the left half (pulpit side) of the church. Stand before the minister who is distributing the host (bread) and extend forward the palm of your hand. The minister places the host in each communicant’s hand, saying:

The body of Christ, given for you. Amen.

After receiving the host, walk to the side and stand before the minister with the tray of individual cups. Take a cup from the tray as the minister says:

The blood of Christ, poured out for you. Amen.

After receiving and consuming the cup, place the cup in the receptacle on the stand next to the minister, and return to your seat via the middle, diagonal aisle.

Hymn Oh, that I Had a Thousand Voices Christian Worship #194

This hymn will be sung during the distribution. The congregation sings as many stanzas of the hymn as the time for the distribution allows.

After the distribution, stand at the minister’s direction. The true body and blood of our Lord ✠ Jesus Christ strengthen and preserve you to life everlasting.

Amen. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

His mercy endures forever. Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup,

We proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this saving gift. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

17

Blessing The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and ✠ give you peace.

Amen.

Returning to Public Worship at Crown of Life

We are grateful to be able to resume public worship at Crown of Life after several weeks without services in March, April, and May due to the “stay at home” orders in response to the Coronavirus outbreak. We are taking appropriate measures to address Coronavirus concerns. Among these measures are the following:

▪ Local health agencies recommend that churches limit attendance in worship to 25% of seating capacity. Our sanctuary’s total potential seating capacity is slightly over 400. Since we are still “growing into” our relatively new church sanctuary, and normal (pre-outbreak) attendance was around 100 at both Sunday services and around 30 at Thursday evening services, we will retain our usual worship schedule at this time—Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and Sundays at 8:00 & 10:30 a.m. If needed, we will add an additional Sunday service at 9:15 a.m. to address attendance concerns. As you take your seats in the sanctuary, please leave an appropriate distance between you and others.

▪ Worshipers who prefer to wear a mask for health reasons are free to do so. Disposable masks are available in the church lobby. You may also sit in the “overflow seating” behind the glass wall that separates the gathering space from the church sanctuary if you prefer to be seated away from the larger assembly in the sanctuary.

▪ All service information, including the hymns, is printed in these service booklets, so that there does not need to be use of shared hymnals. You may dispose of your copy of this booklet after the service.

▪ The offering plates will not be passed through the assembly during the service. You may leave your offerings in the plates by the sanctuary doors as you enter or exit.

▪ We will not use the friendship registers normally kept in each pew to record attendance at worship. Another purpose of the registers was for guests to leave contact information. Guests who would like to follow up today’s service with questions or requests for information about Crown of Life may contact Pastor Strey at (262) 628-2550 ext. 210, or [email protected].

▪ The distribution of Holy Communion will take place by continuous distribution. This will enable communicants to keep an appropriate distance between each other. A written explanation of this procedure is included on page 14 of this service booklet.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,

“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
