Crudens Barn“When we first moved here just over fourteen years ago we weren’t familiar with the area at all,” says Adeline, “but we’ve since discovered that it couldn’t be more perfect. We’re close to the Cotswolds, the Malverns and the Forest of Dean, so we have mile upon mile of stunning countryside on our doorstep, and yet the M5 is a short drive away, we have easy access into London via the excellent train links and we’re just a few minutes from places like Cheltenham and Gloucester. Living here we have the best of all worlds.”

This hugely characterful property was beautifully converted from a 17th Century barn into a spacious family home in the late 1990s. “Structurally we haven’t had to do a thing to the house,” says Adeline, “but over the years we’ve redecorated throughout and more recently we’ve had a beautiful new French oak kitchen fitted. It’s a lovely part of the house and a superb space for entertaining. We have double dividing doors between it and the dining room, so we can open them up and create a very large sociable space. The kitchen also opens onto a small patio terrace which catches the sun from noon onwards, so it’s the ideal space for alfresco dining.”

“The garden is delightful,” says Adeline. “It’s very enclosed and so has the feeling of a secret garden, and in terms of maintenance it’s very easy to keep, which leaves more time to enjoy it. Beyond our lovely conservatory is a huge patio and then the majority of the rest is laid to lawn with mature shrubs and trees dotted here and there. It’s a space that has given us a lot of pleasure over the years.”

“In fact a number of children have attended Pates School, a top grammar school in Cheltenham - and it’s so close that when my daughter was younger she was able to pop home for lunch. We also have two very nice pubs, a shop and Post Office, as well as a cricket club and village hall, both of which are real hubs of our thriving community. We used to live in London but I can honestly say that since moving here my social life is far more active.”

Favourite room: “The sitting room is absolutely stunning,” says Adeline. “With its beautiful vaulted ceiling, minstrel gallery and huge open fire, it’s a room that is filled with character and gives the house a real wow factor.”

Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: “When we moved here we didn’t just buy a house,” says Adeline, “we bought into a lifestyle, and it has been amazing and a totally idyllic place to bring up children.”

Memorable event (if not another favourite room or unique feature): “The village is incredibly sociable,” says Adeline, “in fact twice a year we have a ‘progressive supper’ during which we move from house to house for different courses of dinner; it’s a terrific way of getting to know people.”

What they’ll miss most/why they are leaving: “We feel that the time is now right for us to downsize,” says Adeline, “but if at all possible we would love to stay in the village. We have had some wonderful times here and will take with us some cherished memories.”*
