OIC ReportingGeneral Sam Black 3BDE OIC 318, , th MSG

Greetings, marines, and happy new year. It's been six months now since I have taken the helm here in the brigade. I'd like to think

that things have been moderately successful. The only shortfall I've noticed is in the area of reporting. I was reviewing the records and have noticed a few things and am hoping I don't have to take any drastic measures. We don't have many requirements as marines, but reporting six times a year is the biggest one for a unit. I instituted a system where we have automated redundancies now so that three brigade staff members receive the unit reports as they come in from the SFMC form (http://www.sfi-sfmc.org/portal/index.php?option=com_form&Itemid=455). The links inside the SFI Database do not work. Any reports posted there are going nowhere except into the darkness of the Internet, never to be seen again by human eyes. I have four units who have not reported, at least, since I took office. Those unit OICs have been personally contacted by me and I'm hoping to find out what the difficulty is and where the breakdown of communication lies.

As for the remaining units, we are at a place where we have been up and down between on-time and just slightly late. I know we can do this. I have faith in the Third Brigade to work towards 90-100% reporting each and every time. And, maybe, just maybe, I'll get to give out a large number of reporting streamers at the muster this year.

As I look back on the past year, I see that it's been one that has been filled with ups and downs, coming and going, wins and losses. I hope that I have set the brigade on a course with less dependence and more independence. The marines have always deserved to set their own path and not simply follow behind the region and ride their coattails. The staff is looking to plan a few more special things for our brigade members over the coming year and we are looking forward to all the fun and excitement the undiscovered country has to offer.

One last reminder, it's time to get in our reporting for the Commandant's Challenges. See the announcement from Jari James, COFORCECOM, also in this issue for all the details and deadlines.

One last thing, I keep an open door policy. If you want to bring something up or suggest something, feel free to always come and knock on my door.

Have a great new year! Ooorah!

Zero Robotics team earns USA championship in International Space Station competition Continued from page 1( ) Peter Lee of the Ghu Crew said their alliance planned to win by preventing the other teams from scoring rather than by increasing their own point totals. "Over the past few months we've actually been coding back in our ComSci lab at Lubbock High and we've also been communicating with other teams across the U.S.,"Lee said. "We've been brainstorming differ-

ent strategies, testing and experimenting.” Team member Ross Raedeke said the team's strategy had worked “100 percent of the time.” Black's national-champion team not only spent four days visiting MIT; they met with fourcurrent astronauts: John M. Grunsfeld, Barbara Morgan, Greg “Box” Johnson, and Greg “Taz” Chamitoff before returning home to Lubbock January 20, 2014. “To be able to communicate regularly with,” Black told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, “and get their ideas across was just a magnificent opportunity for them, to work on those skills and to be able to explain their ideas to someone. I hope they'll look back at this as

the first of many accomplishments as they go through college and their career paths." An archived webcast of the four-hour-long finals remains available at press time. Deputy OIC Reporting

Major General Edward C. Tunis III327th MSG SFMC,

Greetings fellow Dogs of War. It is my great pleasure to address you all. Welcome to 2014 and what I hope will be a productive year. As with most new years,

we all make resolutions. I wanted to remind everyone that we can always improve ourselves or at least improve upon our core values. In that spirit I'd figured I'd quote one of my favorite sections from the Marine Force Manual:

APPENDIX B - How to Destroy a Marine Strike GroupDon’t attend meetings, or at least arrive late.Always leave before the meeting is over.Never have anything to say at meetings, wait until you get outside or at home. When at meetings, agree to do everything, then go home and do nothing. The next day, find fault in your officers and fellow Marines.Take no part in your ship’s affairs.Be sure to sit in the back at meetings, so you can talk things over with your friends. No one will notice.Take all that your fellow Marines have to give and all they are working hard to get, but give nothing in return.Talk cooperation, but never cooperate. If asked to help others, always say you don’t have the time.Threaten to quit or resign at every opportunity.Tell others they stand for too little or too much.Never accept an assignment willingly. It is easier to criticize others than to do something yourself.Spend as much time as possible on the Internet criticizing other organizations and units. Only people in your unit or

organization are worthy of courtesy and respect.Constantly spread rumors and criticize the officers around you. This gives you something to do with all your free time. It

may even get them to work harder for the ship. They all want to be big shots or they wouldn’t be officers, right?Don’t do anything more than you have to, and when others willingly and unselfishly try to use their ability and time to help

the unit, howl as loudly as you can because the unit is being run by a CLIQUE!

As always, remember this is your Brigade; if you have an idea for an event, speak up. You may be surprised how many other people will like your idea as well. I look forward to seeing great things in the near future from everyone in Brigade.

Carry on.

S-1 Reporting Administration is normally a very dull job. Routine rules the day most of the time here in the S-1 office. That being said, it’s never too soon to think about award recommendations for your Marines. Remember, this year’s Summit -- and therefore the Third BrigadeMarine Muster -- is in June, only six months away. OICs, you should be making notes about who in your unit is doing what. Take a look at the Marine Force Manual (http://www.library.sfi-sfmc.org/downloads/mfm2012.pdf), and see what awards your Marines qualify for. Think about who you’d like to nominate for the Valor awards, and why. Start at page 54, and go on through to page 72. (If you have Cadet Marines, you should also pay attention to pages 73 through 77.) Don’t forget about the Good Conduct Medal, too. It’s not automatically awarded, so you need to keep close watch on how long your Marines have consecutively served as Marines (Active or Reserve!) and nominate them appropriately.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Administratively yours,

S-3 Reporting Ahoy Marines! Your S3 Officer is busy as ever. Personally, a new job, the holidays, wearing other hats around STARFLEET...I think it's time to crack open abottle of Aldebaran whiskey - but not before I tell you all what I've been up to for our Brigade!

Role play - it's not dead, I swear. In fact I've been working on a separate website that will make things EVEN EASIER for everyone to put in SITREPS, look up info (orders, maps, intel reports) and a forum to chat about things, and coordinate the game. It's going to be spiffy - and it's almost ready. I have to get the SITREP form working (and by that I mean bribe our S2 into showing me how) and populate just a little more data, but the site structure, permission sets, etc., are built (e.g. it works!). I will be inviting the Unit Reps aboard first, and then all others who wish to join. It will require a log in to submit the SITREP and chat on the forums, but functionality of looking through data on current and previous missions will be available to all. Wilderness Challenge - We're going to try again. Looking at the April-May time frame and looking for a Geocaching/oreienteering mash-up. Not into that? That's OK - we'll be having a field day at the same day and location! That's right, there will be fun for all - a 3rd Brigade double play! I am activly looking into locations and times now. Once we hammer it out, expect a big announcement, and lots of reminders from me. That is the bulk of my work the past few months for 3BDE - and I'm pretty excited about it all! I look forward to seeing everyone at our events, playing in the RP Missions and otherwise just enjoying the hell out of life in the 3BDE!

S-6 Reporting

Greetings, Dogs of War! As I think you can see by this edition, your news is our news – across the Corps and Fleet. Cry Havoc! strives to bring you *all* the news of STARFLEET and the SFMC. But we depend on YOU to pass on what's happening; if you don't let us know your news, we can't share it.

This issue, our thanks go to Col. Cathey Osborne of the 314th MSG / USS Firebird, for reporting on a visit to the travelling Vietnam Memorial Wall; and, with a tip of our hat to Wayne McAliece, the true story of a Dog of War in the RAAF. Plus, our website lets us share YOUR units' doings with the Brigade, Corps, and beyond. Visit 3bde.org today!

I'm always reachable via [email protected]. Want an event put on the Brigade's calendar? Have a suggestion? Got a question? Contact your Brigade Staff. We've got your six, but we can't help if we don't hear from you!

Now for the bad news. Nine of our 21 units (42.8%) didn't turn in a December MSR. Three-sevenths of the Dogs of War aren't having any fun? That can't be right!

Remind your reporting officer to keep the unit's MSRs current so you get all the credit you deserve.

S-4 Supplemental Report Brigadier Matt Ingles writes, “With the start of a new year and new administration there are a couple ofitems the membership should be made aware (of) as it relates to the processing of their memberships so I hope this email gets passed on to all who need it.”

Effective today we have a new official address:STARFLEET

PO Box 28Tilton, NH 03276-0028

In the coming weeks the new membership application will become available via the STARFLEET website (click on https://db.sfi.org/secure/renewal.php). I encourage all COs to make note of the new address and pass it on. I would normally say just update your copies of membership applications you have, but with the change in rates you really will want to get rid of the old copies you have laying around and start using the new ones as soon as they are available. Once the new form is available, I will let you know.

2014 MEMBERSHIP PACKETS – Desire to use the 40th Anniversary Logo as part of the campaign delayed sending the Membership Certificate to the printer; additionally the Handbook needs to be updated for the new rates. Both of these items should be done by the end of January. This means that all membership packets that are due to be sent out after 2013.01.01will be delayed until the new material is available. Once the material arrives at the teams I will let you know; packets will then be produced and sent as fast as possible in the order they were received. Should the certificates arrive before the paper material, we would sent out the CD packets in order, skipping over the paper packets.

2013 MEMBERSHIP PACKETS – A higher than expected renewal rate in December, Laminator issues, and an overall very crazy schedule on my part has created a backlog of about 45 2013 paper packets still being worked on by our Denver team. As we transition to a non laminated ID card for 2014, some 2013 ID cards may be that style, as we have run out of lamination pouches and basically worn out the last laminator.

2013 REISSUED PACKETS – During 2013 we have seen a higher rate of packets that have gone missing, as well as packets just taking longer to arrive; not sure what the reason is for this. Many of these missing packets are just getting reported now and we will do our best to get them resent as soon as possible.

HOW YOU CAN HELP MEMBERSHIP PROCESSING: Please make sure your address and email address are correct in the database before submitting your renewal. CO's and others who renew for someone else: if renewing for a member, you cannot see their listed address, please list what you know to be their correct address in the Important Info Box. Listing the address of the member being paid for under the “shipped-to” portion of the Paypal (tm) receipt is also very helpful. This year Vice Admiral Bea Hart of the USS Sunflower has joined the processing staff; while I have come to know many of you who pay for others by name, and in some cases even who you will be paying for, Bea will not know that. So, the more info we have in the “Important Info” box, the better, especially when it comes to who is paying and what address the packet should be sent to.         International members, most of you should be getting email notification as to when your packet is sent as part of the STAMP.com international mailing process provided – if, of course, your email address is current. The form also asks for your phone number, although it works without such info. I believe the reason for this info is so that you can be contacted should something happen with the delivery of your packet. I know that this info is not something you want to share but it could possibly help in getting you your packet. In addition I know our own database system is not always friendly in the way it handles address listings for international members; so if you could. also list your address in its proper format in the Important Info Box. That increases our ability to ensure an accurate address format is used.            Once we start sending out 2014 packets I am going to attempt to send email notification to all primary members when their packets are shipped; this of course will only work if the email address listed in the database is correct. It would also be nice to hear back when packets arrive. While I know everyone will not do this, if at least some of you did it would give us better feedback as to real time it takes for packets to arrive.            If you do have any problems please let me us know right away. The best option is via email: mailto:[email protected]. That way, I have the info written down and can easily respond at 1 AM if need be; the 888 phone number is good, but since my job transfer and promotion my free time away from work has become very sporadic, so I may not be able to take your call when you call.

Vietnam Memorial Replica 314th Visits Traveling Wall

Article Photographs by Col. Cathey Denah Osborne 314& “ ” , th MSG Back in November on Veterans' Day weekend, members of the USS Firebird and

314th MSG were able to visit the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall in Magnolia, Texas. The Wall is a 3/5 scale of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC. Built of polished, black

granite, it stands six feet high at the center, spanning 288 feet from end to end. It is graven with the names of the known fallen in Vietnam.

This Traveling Memorial stands as a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War. It was created for the purposes of helping heal those left behind, rekindling friendships, and to allow an opportunity to view the Wall to individuals who might not otherwise be able to view the original monument in Washington, DC.

The crewmembers who attended found numerous family connections among the known dead; some connections we had not previously known existed. Members of the Cathey, Holland, Hoveland, Huidion, Mitchelltree, O'Banion, Osborne, Reece and Vance families were identified and located with the help of the volunteers on site. Brigadier Christopher O'Banion and Chaplain Ken Gurton were able to take rubbings of the various family names from the Wall as mementoes of the occasion.

The volunteers provided rubbing sticks and paper for those who wished to take a rubbing of a name as a reminder not only of their visit but of someone their family has cared about and continues to cherish.

Local ROTC squads were on hand to answer questions and provide general information and assistance. Veterans were also performing these duties.

For more information on the Wall, or to check the display schedule, please check the website at http://www.travelingwall.us/.

DCO FORCECOM Reporting Greetings from DCOFORCECOM. As I settle into my new job here at HQ, one of my first and primary tasks is compiling and tabulating accurate data for the SFMC Reading Challenge. I ran into a few recurring questions as I have reviewed Unit and Brigade Reports, so I wanted to take a moment to hopefully clarify a couple of things.

First of all, there has been some question as to the proper reporting format and when challenge data should be reported. Reading Challenge data should be reported on each bi-monthly Unit Report. It should not be reported all at once at the end of the Challenge.

This is because the Challenge ends shortly before IC, where the Reading Challenge awards are presented. If you report a year's worth of data all at once at the end of the challenge period, that leaves me a very short amount of time to go through and compile a very large amount of data, and creates a huge logjam in the process. Send your unit's progress as you go, on each report, and that will give me ample time to keep your progress accurately tallied and recorded throughout the year.

As to the proper format, your report should include the following info for each individual participating: Name, SCC#, title of the book, its ISBN number and the number of pages read. ALL of this info should be reported for each individual. There has also been some question as to when the Challenge runs, and whether a unit can enter midstream. The Challenge traditionally runs from IC to IC. If that changes, it will be properly broadcast through all available and proper channels. And anyone wanting to participate is more than welcome to join in at any point. Just be aware that the tallies for participating units run from IC to IC, so if you join in later, your tallies will start at that point and run until the end of the Challenge.

However, in my opinion, the Reading Challenge is more about encouraging folks to read rather than competition, so I welcome your participation at any point in the process. For more information, here is the link to the Challenge info on the SFMC website: http://www.sfi-sfmc.org/aboutus.php?p=challenges

THIRD BRIGADE STARFLEET MARINE CORPS February 2014

COFORCECOM ReportingGood evening, Marines. With the start of the new year and the new Command cycle, I want to thank Commandant McGowan for his faith in

my abilities and his decision to retain me in the position of COFORCECOM. For those who have worked with me the last 3 years, nothing has really changed. My job is to provide support and information to the individuals of the STARFLEET Marine Corps. My office door is always open. Usually because the cranky CW3 who's now sitting in the front office playing 'Hangman' in my electronic appointment book and acting as 'Chief Screener and Tea Fetcher' forgets to close the thing. So that's to your gain.

With some Brigades gearing up for their annual awards cycle, I'd like to touch on a couple of specifics.Commandant's Campaign Award: This is the reporting cycle for units to report activities for the Commandant's

Campaign Challenge. Don't know what that is? To quote the 'Marine Force Manual': This ribbon is given for completing or participating (certain criteria may have to be met to qualify) in a Commandant's Campaign. Still not much? This award is issued by the Commandant for those who volunteer in support of 'Toys for Tots' and the 'Special Olympics'. For the 2013 award cycle any hours spent in support of the Sargent Major's 'March for the Disabled' will also count. If someone wants to use another project, there is no guarantee that it will count - that will be on a case by case basis as decided by the Commandant. The data collection period covers from 1 Jan 2013 through 31 Dec 2013. It's not enough to simply say 'I and my unit did stuff'. I will be compiling the list to submit to the 'Dant and will need the following: who, what, where, when and why [marine's name & SCC#, activity, where did it take place, the date, what all happened and how long did it take]. A minimum of four documented hours is required.

Please have this information to your BDE OIC in the Feb 2014 report. This way I can make sure I get a report from every brigade and nothing gets missed. This info needs to be to me by 28 Feb 2014.

FORCECOM's Reading Challenge: This is a year-long inter-Corps competition to encourage folks to read more and it's honestly very simple to get involved. You can not count books that you are required to read for work. E-Books do count since you still have to read them. Your Unit OIC will need the following data ASAP and the rest of the year until the June report: Unit #, Name, SCC# and then the book title, author, ISBN and page count. It's just perfect if I get it this way:

Unit # Name, SCC# book, author, ISBN, pagesbook, author, ISBN, pagesName, SCC#book, author, ISBN, pages

The Reading Challenge runs from 1 June to 31 May. I will compile all the data submitted and winners will be announced at IC this year. There are winners for Brigade, Battalion, Unit and individual [adult and cadet]. The top three in each category will receive certificates, and 1st place in each category will be authorized to add a streamer to the Guidon [white with black block letters that says 'READING (year won)'].

Awards and Nominations: As mentioned above, it's coming up on that time of year to start your thinking about award nominations. As the Sergeant Major is fond of telling me, 'If you can't come up with a reason why your unit, and its members, are the best of the best – there are problems.' Okay - I paraphrased that a bit, but it gets the point across.

Here's the URL for the online form: http://www.sfi-sfmc.org/awards.php. If anyone is having problems using the online forms, please report this to me ASAP. [We can't fix it if we don't know it's doing it.] If it's a nomination for a Brigade level award, also let your BDE OIC know ASAP. The person making the nomination should be getting an email telling them their nomination went through, so if you don't see that in your inbox, report the problem. If you're wondering what awards are out there, who issues what and if you'd be eligible for something, you can find descriptions of the awards on the SFMC website here: http://www.library.sfi-sfmc.org/ - or in the Marine Force Manual starting on page 57 - Section 8 - Awards, paragraph 8.2 SFMC Achievement Awards.

And if you've got questions, always remember to use your chain of command. Everyone, from your Unit OIC up to the members of the General Staff, is here to help you. Just run your thoughts and concerns up the chain and we'll help you out.

Stand easy, Marines.

COINFOCOM Reporting Greetings Marines,

Before jumping into the report I wanted to relay some information about my visit to Kennedy Space Center near Cocoa Florida last weekend. Although I have been in Florida for several years, I had never made the trip over to visit KSC. Now that they have the space shuttle Atlantis on display it was time to go. The space center was much larger than I expected, we were there all day and barely got to see everything. The Atlantis display is spectacular. The way they transition from the screening room to opening the screen and there is the shuttle right in front of you is very well done. After spending several hours at the Atlantis display and shuttle launch experience, it was time to take the bus tour. We headed over to the launch pads, passed the assembly building which is huge! A picture doesn't compare to the real thing. It is hard to get the actual scale of the building in a picture. Heading back the main facility you stop by the Saturn 5 building. This building has everything Apollo missions and they have an actual Saturn 5 rocket on display. It is as long as a football field. Again seeing a picture of it fails to compare to the real thing. I hope to get the photosposted on my ships website this weekend. If you are interested in seeing the pictures send me an email off list and I'll send you the link once I get them uploaded. Ok enough about my fun and on with the report.

Now that we have made it through the holiday season and we are thawing out from the cold snap INFOCOM will be getting started on our project list for the upcoming year.

Here's a list of the first items we will be working on.1. Update the photo rotating header on the SFMC website. I'm going to ask each active Brigade to submit an image file to

add to the rotation.2. Move the Photo section from the old SFMC website to the new one. Update the photo rotating header on the SFMC

website.3. Add a section to the for the AODE archive section. For the SFMC website's rotating header update, I would like to ask each Brigade commander to send me a picture or

graphic to represent their brigade; I will add one image or graphic for each of the active Brigades. The image or graphic will need to be at least 12.5 inches by 4 inches. It must be as high a resolution as possible. I can adjust them to fit as long as they are close to the size. No. 2, we will be adding the photo section to the new website. No. 3, the AODE archive requires an addition.

In closing, here are the pingdom stats for January.

Rescued Dog of War Protects WWII RAAF BaseFellow Marines, The recent piece in Corps Digest Vol 75 Issue 11 about Sergeant Reckless got me thinking, so I went through a few of the books I have. Throughout history animals have been used in war and on the battlefield. But with the coming of the 20th century and WW1 animal usage grew to all new proportions. Millions of horses were used, not just for cavalry but for moving big guns around, pulling field carts and ambulance carts. The number could have easily exceeded 15 million, for the number of dead was well over 8 million. When the storm of WW2 came, once again animals were drafted and fought on the front lines. All the major sides saw the usefulness of dogs carrying messages. These animals were highly trained to avoid the enemy and get the message through to their respective HQ. The Belgians even used them to pull their machine guns. Pigeons were used in their thousands. Both sides had Pigeon Corps. The Germans even trained Falcons to hunt the allied pigeons down. Last of the animals to go to war were Canaries: Like their civilian counterparts they were used in the tunnels detecting any gas leaks. Australian military history shows many animals that have done great things. I just picked one out: a small black and white kelpie, found hiding after the first Japanese air raid on Darwin on 19th February 1942. Leading Aircraftman Percy Westcott found him; when he saw the pup's front leg was broken, he took him to the base doctor. Upon seeing what Westcott was asking, the doctor replied even had the patient been a man, he could not do anything without a name and serial number. The doctor turned away to finish what he was doing. Westcott interrupted to say the patient's name was Gunner and his serial number was "0000". The doctor turned, plucked Gunner from Percy's hands and proceed to plaster his leg. Gunner had just joined the Air Force. Gunner's leg healed quickly but the pup was still very shaken from his ordeal. However, with the kind attentions of Percy and the other men, he started to act like a puppy once more. One hot dry day Westcott noticed Gunner jumping and barking and whimpering, just like after that first air raid. He couldn't understand - Gunner had been improving so much. This went on for several minutes; in the end Westcott went over. As he was about to pick Gunner up, he heard the base's air raid siren going off. Like everyone else Percy, with Gunner, ran to his air raid shelter. Please See RAAF Dog of War page 13( , )

Dog Of War Protected WWII RAAF Base From Air Raids

Continued from page 12( ) After the raid Westcott became worried that Gunner would

revert to his scared self. When Gunner went back to his playful temperament, Percy didn't think of it again. A few days later Gunner began his strange behaviour again – once more an air raid followed. Over the next few months, every time Gunner started to act like that, Percy and the others would head towards the shelter. Gunner got so he would simply head there by himself. Word very quickly got around the base – when Gunner headed for the shelter and was acting strange, everyone stopped what they were doing and headed for shelter. There were several amazing things going on here. Gunner could pick up the sound of Japanese aircraft some 20 minutes away, long before they would show up on radar and long before any of the air field spotters could see them. The other amazing thing was that Gunner could pick the difference between Japanese aircraft and Allied aircraft. Gunner never once acted like this when Allied aircraft came in to land. Gunner's amazing abilities caught the attention of the Base Commander, Wing Commander McFarlane who gave the Order to Percy and a hand held siren. Percy's orders were that the moment Gunner started to act strange Percy was to sound the alarm. Percy and Gunner went on through the war, well as far as I can find; the unfortunate side to this story there seems to be no end. Records of Gunner? Well, there are no more. I wish to believe that both Percy and Gunner stayed together that's the ending I like.
