Look who’s coming to our40th birthday!

This year, the Canberra Southern Cross Club is celebrating its 40th anniversary. I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to the Club’s 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner to be held on Friday 17 August.

In a first for Canberra, and the Club, I’m very pleased to announce that Australia’s favourite operatic diva Marina Prior will headline the Gala Dinner set within the Corinna

Ballroom at our Woden venue. Special guest Mark Vincent will add to the evening’s magic with a depth and clarity of voice that belies his years. Vincent won Australia’s Got Talent in 2009.

The Gala Dinner will be a wonderful night out where we celebrate the Club’s achievements over 40 years both as a strong member

organisation and a key contributor to the Canberra community. I encourage you to book tables for this event in advance through Reception at Woden as tickets will be limited. More details about this event are listed on page 13.

On 24 August 1972, the Canberra Southern Cross Club opened its doors for business in Woden.

I would like to pay tribute to the founders of the Club including the inaugural President, Mr Fred Quinane (dec’d) who together had the vision and determination to establish this Club.

With my fellow Board members, I am charged with the stewardship of this great Club which has expanded to six venues across Canberra,

employs more than 400 staff and will face some significant challenges ahead. Key to the Club’s success will be continuing to provide what our members want and need.

I would like to particularly thank our membership for their continuing support as you are the very reason that the Canberra Southern Cross Club continues to prosper after 40 years.

I encourage you to come to our Clubs and be part of our 40th Birthday celebrations!

New-look

website!

“In a first for Canberra, and the Club ... Marina Prior will headline the Gala Dinner...“

Inside, we profile a wonderful member story. Joyleen Litherland won a red Mercedes Benz C180 in a Club promotion in 1995. Seventeen years later, Joyleen is still driving her Mercedes to the Woden Club with her membership number as its license plate.

Joyleen is one of the members who contacted the Club following our call for member stories and photographs as part of the Club’s 40th anniversary celebrations. See page 14 for Joyleen’s story.

Our 40th anniversary celebrations turn up a notch this quarter as we formally celebrate the Club’s birthday at a ruby-themed Gala Dinner in August. It will be a night to remember and an opportunity to come together to celebrate the success of the Canberra Southern Cross Club which has become a household name in Canberra.

There is so much happening at our Clubs. You’ll find the entertainment pages jam-packed with top-class

performers. There is something for everyone, from 2011 Australia’s Got Talent winner, Jack Vidgen, to classical guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, live-show the Baby Boomers-Blast from the Past, and being an Angels fan of old, I’m particularly pleased that Doc Neeson – The Voice of The Angels will be performing at our Jamison venue on Friday 22 June.

Make sure that you pencil the fantastic wine dinners at our Tuggeranong venue into your diary beginning with Thursday 7 June: Dégustation through the Decades where as part of our birthday celebrations we sample some of the most popular food and wine trends from the past. On Thursday 19 July, enjoy a five-course dinner with acclaimed wines at the Peter Lehmann Wines Dinner.

The Club is fortunate to have great staff who have contributed to the Club’s 40 years of success. As members, you may recognise many

of our long-serving staff who have been with the Club for 10, 15, and 20 plus years and have helped make our Clubs such great places to visit.

Enjoy our celebrations. I look forward to seeing you at our Clubs!

Celebrations kick on!

“We’ve incorporated Member feedback and have put a lot of thought and planning into the new design,” said Liz Lang, the Club’s Communication and Marketing Manager.

“Our over-riding objective was to make the website as easy to use as possible and to showcase the fantastic array of activities that we have on offer for members – whether it’s entertainment, dining, functions, or taking advantage of the Club’s great facilities such as cruising Lake Burley Griffin on the MV Southern Cross.”

“On the new ‘Live Shows’ page, members will be able to see footage and listen to audio of many of the great entertainers who will perform at our clubs. This feature will be really useful for members when they’re deciding which shows to book.”

“Another great addition to our website is the ‘Social Pages’. Our roving club photographer will ‘snap’ members enjoying themselves at the club and these photos will be uploaded onto the website and also feature in our newsletter,” Liz said.

Our home page and venue navigational tools have not changed in functionality. What has changed slightly is the navigational bar that divides Club information into the following easy-to-use categories:

• Live Shows: Lists all the upcoming entertainment across our venues and allows you to book tickets online in most cases.

• What’s On: Click here for dining offers and special events such as Mother’s Day and FREE school holiday movies.

• Dining: Lists the range of restaurants across our venues with downloadable menus for each one.

• Functions: If you’re planning a function, this area lets you view each of our venue’s function facilities, download function packages, and email our Event Managers directly.

• Facilities: Click here to discover the huge range of facilities that are available to you as a Member, along with opening hours and contact details.

“The new website is a great step forward, and like social media, it will evolve over time. We’re keen to receive Members feedback on the site. Please drop us a line at [email protected],” Liz said.

The winning formula for family diningWhen Henry’s Family Restaurant first opened its doors in 1992, it was the first of its kind in Canberra. It was a restaurant that offered parents quality dining and the chance to have a decent conversation while their children could enjoy free entertainment. The result was an influx of families.

“We were packed to the rafters every night,” remembers Executive Chef, Gordon Hunt, who oversaw the running of the restaurant in its early days. “We knew it was a great formula for families but had no idea we’d be so busy right from the start!”

“A huge part of the success was ensuring that the décor struck the right balance between being fun and friendly whilst maintaining our quality brand,” adds Helen Bain, the Club’s resident Interior Designer who was charged with decorating the new restaurant.

Helen’s inspiration came from an unlikely source. “The previous owners of the building had left behind a huge model of a cockatoo in a plane,” she said. The cockatoo was apparently called ‘Henry’ and Helen decided he could not only stay, he could also become the restaurant’s mascot. She commissioned a stunning wall illustration by a chalk artist in South Australia of Henry - the same illustration that appears on the wall at our Woden venue and on our menus across all of our three restaurants.

Today the legacy of Henry’s Family Restaurant lives on at Woden, Tuggeranong and Jamison. Families continue

to enjoy an extensive menu, with the addition of a special ‘tweens’ menu that caters for children with growing appetites, at highly competitive prices. And children continue to be entertained with a soft play area, outdoor area (at Jamison and Tuggeranong), free play stations and amusement machines.

The winning formula of keeping both parents and children happy even extends to children’s birthday parties. With packages starting from just $9.50 per child – including catering,

beverages, decorations, personalised invitations and tokens for use in the amusement area and adult platters starting from just $40, everyone is assured of having a good time.

“The previous owners of the building had left behind a huge model of a cockatoo in a plane ...The cockatoo was apparently called ‘Henry’ and Helen decided he could not only stay, he could also become the restaurant’s mascot.”

If you’re dreaming of winning one of the fantastic cars in our 40th Anniversary Car Giveaway promotion, here’s a story to inspire you.

member profile

Joyleen LitherlandProud Mercedes Owner

JOYLEEN LITHERLAND

In 1995 the Club hosted a similar promotion offering a sparkling new red Mercedes Benz C180 as its major prize.

During the course of the promotion the car was parked in the Club’s foyer as a reminder to Members to turn up to the weekly draws every Friday and Saturday night, where 10 lucky people would receive a ticket for the final draw.

Every Saturday night, Joyleen Litherland and her husband would have dinner in the restaurant, followed by a flutter on the poker machines – a tradition they’ve had in place since the Club opened in 1972

“I remember the security guard who had to watch over the Mercedes

in the foyer,” says Joyleen. “His name was Stuart – at least that’s what it said on his name badge, and every Saturday night I’d walk up to him and say ‘Hi Stuart, are you looking after my car?’ It was a standard joke of mine but not once did young Stuart smile.”

Over the course of a few weeks, Joy and her husband each won a ticket into the final draw.

“My husband said to me, ‘If we win, we’ll sell the car and keep the money.’ And I said, ‘well you can do what you like with your ticket, but if mine wins, I’m keeping that car.”

On the night of the final draw, Joy and her husband were playing the pokies when her name was announced as the winner of the car.

“I was so shocked I simply got off my stool and walked over to the announcer, leaving my handbag behind me! My husband had to run after me with it in his hands!”

That night Joy walked away as the winner of a brand new Mercedes Benz with $3000 worth of extras including a special license plate featuring her membership number.

“On my way out, I passed young Stuart and said, “thanks very much for looking after my car,” and I was finally rewarded with a smile! It was one of the best nights of my life!”

“I use the Mercedes as my ‘around town’ car and the furthest I’ve driven it is to Tumut,” she said. “My husband has only driven it twice –the second and last time was when he dinged it when two wallabies jumped unexpectedly infront of the car! When I went to get the car fixed at the mechanics, they assumed, like most people do, that I was rich because I owned a Mercedes! But when I explained that I’d won it and wasn’t rich, they fixed the car for me for free!”

15

This issue we take you (not that far) back to the ‘90s as part of our 40th anniversary retrospective.

flashback1990s

The frivolous excesses of the ‘80s gave way to a decade that started off with a recession and the highest level of unemployment in sixty years. By the start of the new century however, Australia was the land of opportunity. Our economy had recovered and the advent of the Internet meant we were no longer limited by our geographical isolation to the rest of the world.

In Canberra, people cheered on the Raiders as they reached their premiership peak, rocked out at Stonefest every year and thought about moving to Canberra’s newest satellite city, Gungahlin.

The Club dramatically expanded the range and quality of services to Members during the ‘90s. Members enjoyed exclusive lake views and quality dining with the acquisition of the Yacht Club and MV Southern Cross boat. Tuggeranong locals enjoyed a brand new venue in the heart of the ‘valley’ and fitness

enthusiasts took full advantage of the Yamba Club’s sporting facilities, Southern Cross Health Club and Pitch ‘n Putt golf course.

The Southern Cross Club’s, Top of the Cross in Woden was fast gaining a reputation as one of the most sought after venues for live music. Events such as ‘Battle of the Bands’ and ‘Rock Ratings’ proved to be a highly successful formula for launching new acts, attracting big name bands and drawing high-volume crowds. Some of the highlights included international legends José Feliciano and The Supremes as well as national legends Grace Knight, James Morrison, Renée Geyer and Julie Anthony. The Jazz Series was also well into its second decade with jazz greats such as Graham Bell the ‘father of Australian jazz’ and Don Burrows, further cementing the Club’s reputation for hosting world-class entertainment.

“I remember drinking Flaming Lamborghinis

with my mates in the bar, watching bands

at the Top of the Cross and heading to Yamba for a few after-match drinks – good times!”

Brett McDonald

“When Henry’s Family Restaurant first opened, it was such a treat to have

somewhere that kept the children happy

while we could enjoy a nice meal.”
