Undergraduate Research Fair The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS) held the third annual Undergraduate Research Fair on October 4, 2011. The fair is a festival of under-graduate research and creative work that creates a forum for students to connect with faculty and learn about re-search and scholarly opportunities available at GVSU. Approximately 200 students attended the event and met with representatives from a variety of academic depart-ments and support offices. The fair was preceded by a program for 1st-3rd year tenure-track faculty. A panel of faculty research mentors who conduct research with undergraduates provided infor-mation on funding sources, recruiting students, developing projects for undergraduates, and establishing a successful mentoring relationship. Nov. 8—12:00 —1:00pm, 2201 KC The Life of a Protocol: Using IRBNet to Sub-mit Research Learn how to navigate IRBNet, GVSU's electronic protocol submission system for research review including submis-sion, revisions, notifications, renewals and closures. Keep a permanent record of communication with research team members and authorizing officials using the Share and Send Mail features.

Tues. Nov. 22—12:00-1:00 pm, 2201 KC Searching for External Grants This hands-on workshop (bring your own laptop) will teach you how to find external funding opportunities for your project using popular grant search databases such as grants.gov, The Foundation Directory, Community of Sci-ence, and the Grants Resource Center’s Grant Search. You will learn how to find both federal and foundation grant opportunities.

Tues. Dec. 6—12:00– 1:00 pm, 2201 KC Data Security Learn how to build your research plan to minimize risks with the best practices in data security. Strategies to pro-tect confidentiality and comply with University standards will be discussed.

The federal Office for Human Research Protections issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Revisions to the Common Rule on July 22, 2011. The public comment period ended October 26th and a re-sponse to the proposed rule changes was issued on behalf of GVSU by The Human Research Review Chair, Dr. Paul Reitemeier, and university Research Integrity Officer, Mr. Jon Jellema. Many GVSU re-searchers participated in the dialogue during a month long educational initiative by the HRPP, including webinars, open forum discussions, and online wiki-style comment exchange via BlackBoard. For a compre-hensive set of materials, along with Grand Valley’s response, please visit the HRRC website. The discussion will continue for several months until a final rule is issued from the federal government. OHRP and the HRPP will provide updates as the process moves forward.

NSF Changes BIO Proposal Processing  NSF recently announced that it will be changing its submission process in response to the large increase in proposal submission of the last decade. The new procedures for submission and review are to apply to the core programs of Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB), the Division of Environmental Biology, and the Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS). Researchers Face Tighter Conflict of Interest Rules, from GrantWeek, August 29, 2011 On August 25, 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a final rule that amends the 1995 Public Health Ser-vice (PHS) regulations on applicant responsibilities for promoting research objectivity. The new ruling establishes standards to ensure that the design, conduct, and reporting of research funded under PHS grants or cooperative agreements will be free from bias resulting from investiga-tor financial conflicts of interest (FCOI). Institutions have until August 24, 2012 to be in full compliance with the new requirements.

The reasons for the amendments are twofold. First, the growing complexity of biomedical and behavioral research and the increased interac-tion among the government, research institutions, and the private sector, especially drug companies, suggest that a more rigorous approach to investigator disclosure, institutional management of financial conflicts, and federal oversight is required. Second, the promises of translational research, the challenges of technology transfer, and intense expectations at all levels of government that universities function as engines of socio-economic development generate new pressures on institutions and their faculty members to expand their relationships and deepen their engagement with industry.
