Background

• Last semester, IU announced a huge investment in online education

• Regional campuses have been tasked to focus on graduate programs (although undergrad online work is “encouraged”)

• At IUPUI, the Dean of each school was asked to produce a plan for supporting the initiative

SoS and the Online Initiative

• Kathy Marrs was asked to create an SoS online education committee to produce this plan for the Dean.

• Several departments within our school are interested in eventually participating, but the “first wave” of program deliverables is very aggressive (looking for June – August launches)

Certificate of Applied Computing

• Department focus here is on “production readiness”– Classes are “online”, but currently delivered as individual

courses– We need to complete work to release them as a

PROGRAM• Consistent user interface• Lecture “gaps”• Strong Oncourse curriculum envelope• Asynchronous and synchronous Instructor support through

Oncourse Adobe Connect feature• and cPLTL synchronous support for lab instruction• Policy guidelines around the logistics of course offerings

Potential: Grad Certificate Professional Development

• Stewardship for the 10K nationwide call to improve CS educational pipeline

• Targets licensed K-12 teachers• Would be comprised of 18 or less credit hours• Focuses on domain content (Not how to teach)• Built around the CS10K envelope, may help position us favorably for

NSF CE21 proposals• Uses current curricula: (N301, N201, N207, N241 as core)• Next steps: Kathy Marrs to explore idea with SofEd, and set up

exploratory meeting with Math (who has a teacher program)• As this idea is fleshed out, we’ll keep the grad committee advised so

that we follow a proper approval process
