PUBLISHED FOR THE KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS `OHANA O ver the last 38 years, more than 50,000 non- Kamehameha Schools elementary school students have experienced a one-week boarding and Hawaiian cultural experience called “Explorations.” Featuring a week of cultur- ally aligned adventures capped with a Friday night “Hö`ike” before a packed house of family and friends, Explorations is Kamehameha’s longest running and most well-known community education outreach program. If there were an alumni association for Explorations graduates, it would far exceed the total number of all Kamehameha Schools graduates since the institution first opened its doors in 1887. Well, thanks to a new community education strategy based upon the recently complet- ed Education Strategic Plan, Kamehameha has committed to providing even more Hawaiian learners with non-campus based programs and services. The plan calls for Kamehameha to increase its total overall numbers served annually from its current level of 22,400 to 55,400 over the next five to 10 years. And the majority of those 33,000 additional learners will come directly from a new community education implemen- tation plan. “We’re looking at our programs to extend the reach of Kamehameha Schools, but also to have a positive and significant educational impact on those we serve,” said Kamehameha’s dean of Extension Educational Services Dr. Juvenna Chang ’60. “The question is ‘Are we making a real impact, and as a result of our increased reach, what has been gained?’ “The major objective of this whole piece – our Education Strategic Plan and the community education aspect of it – is to create intergenerational change. It’s to pay it forward. We have to care about the Hawaiian people into perpetuity; not just caring about those we serve today, but consid- ering our impact on generations to come.” Kamehameha’s community education implementation plan includes four components. Its first strategic priority focuses on early childhood educa- tion and on increasing literacy for students in grades K-3 in Hawai`i state public schools. The second priority builds on the achieve- ments of the first, sustaining the momentum with programs and services for students in grades 4- 12 and post-high school. Aloha käkou!Our `ohana are the foundation of our

lifelong learning, whether they come from

blood or historical lines. For Hawaiians, every

step we take forward is accompanied by the

footsteps of many before us.

As graduates of Kamehameha Schools,

we walk with the footsteps of our Ke Ali`i

Pauahi and all those she has served. We join the countless KS

`ohana – teachers, parents, classmates, alumni and staff – who

share a common kuleana to continue what our founder started,

a legacy of excellent education for the Hawaiian people.

Over the past year, I have spent many days on our campuses,

walking amongst our haumana and seeing the incredible work

our faculty and staff do. Our students freely share their thoughts,

and foremost in those thoughts is their gratitude for the gift of

education that Princess Pauahi has given them.

The college essay “A Princess’ Will,” by Hawai`i Campus

senior Rochelle Meyers (on page 12), is a strong reminder of the

impact our Princess has on our students’ lives. Rochelle speaks of

Pauahi’s generosity and proudly expresses her gratitude for the

Princess’ love of her people.

Trustee Doug Ing ’62 has also spoken of the importance of

carrying on Pauahi’s heritage. “The flow of values from Pauahi,

through the Will, to trustees and the estate’s leadership, to campus

administration, to the faculty, then into curriculum received and

realized by students is what strategic alignment and implemen-

tation is all about.”

In this edition of I Mua, you’ll read about how Kamehameha

Schools is carrying out just what Trustee Ing speaks of, including

partnering with our communities to find ways to reach out to

more Hawaiian learners.

As we steadily extend our reach to a goal of serving more

than 55,000 learners – both on and off our campuses – each year

by 2016, we are grateful for the work our KS leadership, faculty

and staff do each day to realize that dream.

We are grateful for all of the efforts in our communities to

enrich Hawaiian lives and ways and are excited to work with them.

And we rely upon our generous and accomplished alumni,

to extend themselves daily to model that which Pauahi asked

them to do.

Imagine the possibilities ahead for the Kamehameha Schools

`ohana and our people, when we all share the gifts Rochelle speaks

of in her essay, with others. I imagine Rochelle joining us in this

kuleana very soon.

In April, Kamehameha SchoolsCEO Dee Jay Mailer announced

the appointment of Maui Campusheadmaster Dr. Rod Chamberlainto the position of vice presidentfor campus strategies.

Maui middle school principalLee Ann Johansen DeLima ’77has been named acting headmasterfor the Maui Campus until apermanent headmaster is selected.

In his new role, Chamberlainwill lead the alignment, coordina-tion and implementation of thecampus-based strategic initiativesrelated to Kamehameha’sEducation Strategic Plan.

Those initiatives includeidentifying, designing and imple-menting innovative instructionalmodels; building or expanding

communitysupport from the campuses;and evaluatingand designingcampus pro-grams andservices that

support the growing enrollmentof orphan and indigent studentsand their families.

“Rod has proven himself tobe a leader who is tireless when it comes to serving his students,”Mailer said. “He has led withgreat insight, innovation and astrong ability to navigate throughstrategic change.”

Chamberlain named vice president for campus strategies

Late last year, a delegation fromKamehameha Schools traveled

to Aotearoa to attend the WorldIndigenous Peoples’ Conference on Education in Hamilton, NewZealand and also participated in a cultural exchange with Te Puia,the New Zealand Mäori Arts andCrafts Institute located in Rotorua.

The focal point of theexchange was the presentation of a koa carving, called “Ho`opili,”which honored the relationshipand symbolized the mutual bondbetween the two institutions.

“Ho`opili” to Te Puia chief exec-utive officer Andrew Te Whaitiand other Mäori elders.

“Ho`opili,” which literallymeans “to bring together, to beunited as friends,” honors theunderstanding and commitmentshared by Kamehameha and TePuia at a much deeper level thanany written Western contract could express.

Eskaran said everyoneinvolved in the presentation at Te Puia infused the piece with allof the mana and aloha possible onbehalf of the Kamehameha `ohana.

“The whole mission behind‘Ho`opili’ brought so much prideto Hawaiians and served to solid-ify the relationship we have withour Mäori cousins,” said Eskaran,who sometimes devoted up to 18

hours a day onthe project.

“I knew withÿHo`opili’ something greatwas going to happen.”

In May, vice admiral (ret.)Robert Kihune, chairman of

the Kamehameha Schools Boardof Trustees, was honored with a2006 O`o Award by the NativeHawaiian Chamber of Commerce.

Inaugurated in 1976, the O`oaward has become one of themost prestigious honors presentedto outstanding Native Hawaiianswho, through their talents, havemade significant contributions toimprove communities and thestatus of Native Hawaiians.

“The Admiral” is the chiefexecutive officer of Sandwich IsleCommunications, Inc. and vicechair of the USS MissouriMemorial Association. He is a1959 graduate of the U.S. NavalAcademy.

During his distinguishednaval career,Kihune comman-ded two aircraftcarrier battlegroups, the USSKitty Hawk and

the USS Nimitz, as well as theUSS New Jersey battleship group.He served as commander of theNaval Surface Forces of the PacificFleet, assistant chief of NavalOperations for Surface Warfare atthe Pentagon and chief of NavalEducation and Training.

He retired from the Navy in 1994 and was presented theLegion of Merit with a combat“V” for gallantry.

Trustee Kihune honored by NativeHawaiian Chamber of Commerce

nearly three quarters of $1 millionthrough Jump Rope for Heart.

“The American HeartAssociation of Hawai`i is extremelyproud of Kamehameha’s fund-raising efforts to help fight heartdisease and stroke. We recognizeand applaud their success,” saidToni Muranaka, senior director,youth market of Hawai`i’s AHA.

“We are very proud of ourparticipation,” Tagami said.

“It’s a very important com-munity service because of the highrate of heart disease and stroke inthe Hawaiian community. Whatwe are doing directly impacts ourstudents and their families.”

In April, Kamehameha Schoolselementary school teacher Lynn

Tagami was selected the 2006National Jump Rope for HeartOutstanding Coordinator of theYear at the annual AmericanAlliance for Health, PhysicalEducation, Recreation and Dancenational convention in Salt LakeCity, Utah.

Tagami is the coach andorganizer of the KamehamehaJump Rope Demonstration Team,and along with fellow instructorJay Tschillard, serves asKamehameha’s Kapälama CampusJump Rope for Heart coordinator.

With 751 of 753 students par-ticipating in the February activity,more than $60,000 was raised onKapälama for the American HeartAssociation. Hawai`i and Mauicampus students brought in nearlyanother $30,000 with events ontheir islands.

Trustee Plotts reappointed;process underway to replacetrustee LauIn February, Kamehameha SchoolsBoard of Trustees chairman RobertKihune announced that the stateProbate Court had reappointedtrustee Diane Plotts to a secondfive-year term after receiving high-ly supportive testimony in praiseof trustee Plotts contributions toKamehameha Schools.

Plotts’ reappointmentbecomes effective July 1, 2006.

In March, Kamehameha filed a Petition for Appointment of Successor Trustee, which starts the process of selecting a replace-ment for trustee Constance Lau.

On May 2, Lau became presi-dent and chief executive officer of Hawaiian Electric Industries inaddition to her position as presi-dent and chief executive officer ofAmerican Savings Bank.

Lau announced in Februarythat it would be in the best interestof Kamehameha Schools for her to transition out of her position asa Kamehameha trustee as soon asthe court appoints her successor.

“I want to congratulatetrustee Lau on her promotion and I speak for all of the trustees whenI say that Connie’s impact onKamehameha Schools will be feltand appreciated for decades tocome,” Kihune said.

“Kamehameha Schools isstronger now than it has ever been,and we are heading in a directionthat has been shaped andembraced by our community,” Lausaid. “I will always hold a specialplace in my heart forKamehameha’s mission and itsfounder.”

Hawai`i Campus assists withestablishment of PahoaCommunity Tutoring CenterIn February, staff members atKamehameha’s Hawai`i Campusparticipated in a collaborationwith the Queen Lili`uokalaniChildren’s Center and the stateDepartment of Education to helpopen the Pahoa CommunityTutoring Center for the keiki ofPahoa.

Located in the KeonepokoElementary School cafeteria, thecenter will feature a tutoring center supervisor and two tutors to service K-12 Pahoa studentsMonday through Thursday from5:30 to 8 p.m. Kamehamehadonated five laptop computers and a printer to the center.

The project was originated byhigh school principal Ninia Aldrichand facilitated by recently retiredcampus outreach director EvaBogue. Other Kamehameha staffersinvolved with the project includedCarol Martin, Dannielle Iuta,Danillo Padillo and high schoolvice principal Phil Aganus ’90.

Maui Campus Orchestra toperform in Carnegie HallIn March, the 50-piece MauiCampus Orchestra accepted aninvitation to play at Carnegie Hallin New York City.

Featuring students in grades6-12, the orchestra will be perfor-ming in the MidAmericaProductions 23rd Season ofConcert Offerings, Spring/Summer 2007, March 25 throughJune 21. No date has yet beenconfirmed, but conductor IolaniYamashiro ’78 said the group islooking at June 2, 2007.

Yamashiro submitted anaudition tape to MidAmericaProductions in late February, andwas then notified her orchestrawas selected for a five-day, four-night residency program atCarnegie Hall. A side trip toWashington, D.C. is also beingplanned.

“This is an honor and anopportunity,” Yamashiro told TheMaui News. “They (her students)have so much talent. They don’tunderstand what they have natu-rally. They could be phenomenalif they put their minds to it.”

Kamehameha Schoolsreleases commemorativepublication on Lena MachadoProduced by Ka`iwakıloumoku(Kamehameha’s HawaiianCultural Center Project) andwritten by Pi`olani Motta andKıhei de Silva, Lena Machado,Songbird of Hawai`i: My Memories of Aunty Lena presents the lifestory of Lena Machado along with 30 of her compositions.

Machado, a gifted singer andperformer whose music served asthe theme for the 2006 KamehamehaSchools Song Contest, composedsuch Hawaiian favorites as “HoloWa`apa,” “Ei Nei,”and “KamalaniO Keaukaha.”

The 227-page book, availablein local bookstores, includes sheetmusic, background information,lyrics and translations, photos and touching memories providedby Motta, Aunty Lena’s hanaidaughter.

The book will be used as aneducational resource by teachersas well as a songbook forHawaiian music fans.

“What’s most unique aboutthis book is that it was createdfrom a Hawaiian perspective andworldview, and focuses on thingsthat are particularly meaningfulto Hawaiians,” said Randie Fong’78, who served as musical editorfor the book. “It will be anamazing resource for teachers ofHawaiian language, culture,history and music.”

Among Gray’s classmateswho learned a great deal aboutDoe vs. Kamehameha Schools and ofHawaiian history because of theassignment were presenters RoseChan, Chanie Fortgang and ManaBarari. Now, they all say theygenerally support Kamehameha’sjustification.

Fortgang, who had present-ed Kamehameha’s argument, saidshe had heard of the case in aprevious law class, but admittedthe extent of her knowledge fellshort of what she later learnedwhile preparing for her presenta-tion. “I had known only that theschools were important in preserv-ing Hawaiian culture and that theprincess had left the trust in herwill,” she said.

“I knew embarrassingly littleabout Hawaiian history beforestudying this case,” said Chan,who delivered an overview of thecase. “I knew of a general historyof imperialism, but did not know

may have not determined the truefate of Kamehameha’s admissionspolicy, but it certainly provided a progressive step towards culti-vating more awareness of ajeopardized mission, says SeanGray ’00.

On March 6, 2006 – shortlyfollowing the U.S. Ninth CircuitCourt of Appeal’s announcementto grant an en banc review of Doe vs. Kamehameha Schools – Grayand 75 other constitutional lawstudents at New York UniversityLaw School tackled the case in amock Supreme Court proceedingheaded by renowned lawyer,author and professor Derrick Bell.

Gray served as a represen-tative of the Kamehameha SchoolsAlumni Association, providing theamicus curiae statement of interestto acting class “justices.”

Prior to the assignment, themajority of future lawyers had not even known there was such arace, or ethnic ancestry, as NativeHawaiian. After the arguments,the same majority voted 67-6 touphold Kamehameha’s admissionspolicy.

“It was a valuable opportu-nity to spread the word about Doe vs. Kamehameha Schoolsbecause not many people outsideof Hawai`i know about NativeHawaiians and the issues involv-ing Kamehameha Schools,” saidGray, who is approaching his finalyear at NYU law school.

“I think there would be moresupport if they knew about this,especially at NYU where there aremany liberal-minded students.

In February, the U.S. NinthCircuit Court of Appeals grant-

ed a rehearing en banc requestedby Kamehameha Schools as towhether its admissions policygiving preference to students ofNative Hawaiian ancestry is aviolation of federal civil rights law.

An unidentified non-Hawaiian student identified onlyas John Doe sued Kamehameha inJune of 2003. Doe claimed he wasacademically qualified and wastwice denied admission to theschool when he acknowledgedthat he was a non-Hawaiian.

A three-judge Ninth Circuitappeals panel ruled 2-1 in August2005 in favor of Doe, but therarely granted en banc rehearingsets aside that decision in favor ofKay’s ruling until the en bancdecision is rendered.

The rehearing will be held onJune 20 in San Francisco before apanel consisting of 15 judges. Thepanel will include Chief Judge

Mary Schroeder and 14 other judgesselected by random drawing.

They will hear oral argumentsfrom attorneys for KamehamehaSchools and John Doe. The paneldecision, which requires a simplemajority, will likely not be issuedfor several months to a year.

Over the past two years, theNinth Circuit has granted approxi-mately 26 petitions for en bancreview. Of those 26 cases, 19 werereversed or significantly modified,four were settled and three wereaffirmed.

“With this 15-judge panel –even if the three original judges are

on it – we still have 12 new judgeslooking at the case, so we arecautiously optimistic about theoutcome,” said KamehamehaSchools Board of Trustees chair-man Robert Kihune.

“We just want to thank thethousands of supporters in Hawai`iand the mainland who came out,because their voices were heard bythe Ninth Circuit and helped makethis happen. Thank you all forstepping up to the plate.”

It may have been one assign-ment, technically a few focusedhours spent on broadening anunderstanding of Hawaiian

history, of Kamehameha Schoolsand of a princess’ mission, butGray is confident it was enoughfor most of his classmates to con-tinue following Doe vs. KamehamehaSchools and achieve a better per-ception of its significance toNative Hawaiians.

“We can garner so muchmore support,” added Gray, “butwe need to start by raising aware-ness. We need to make ourselvesheard.”

Kamehameha Schoolsalumni from class years1940-2000 are at it again.

In September of 2004, mone-tary donations from these sameclasses were used to purchase two 15-book sets of KamehamehaSchools Press publications onHawaiian history and culture forevery elementary school library inthe state.

A total of 6,000 books valuedat $64,000 were distributed to the200 schools.

The project, led byKamehameha’s alumni relationsadministrator Gerry VintaJohansen, was by all counts ahome run. And now, “AuntyGerry” is hoping to take anotherball out of the park.

“We felt that our book dona-tion project was so successful andgratifying that we all wanted tocontinue to do something for thecommunity in making a differ-ence,” she said. “Especially in thefield of education, because that’swhat we’re all about.”

At a class representativeretreat in October of 2005, fiveHawaiian-cultural based charterschool principals – all of themKamehameha graduates – gavemoving testimony about themany challenges and needs thattheir institutions face.

“We listened to their testi-mony, and heard how they arestruggling to survive, and thatthey have so many needs that aregoing unmet,” Johansen said.

“We never in our wildestdreams thought we’d hear someof the stories they told us abouthow some of them have classes in

a park or that they are using tentsas classrooms.

“We really felt torn in ourhearts – some of these schoolshave no lunch money for the kids– and it really hit that we need toget out there and help ourHawaiian youngsters.”

The charter schools are fund-

ed by the state, and in addition 11 of the 13 schools are membersof Kamehameha’s Ho`olako Likeprogram, which provides $1 forevery $4 the state provides. TheOffice of Hawaiian Affairs is alsoproviding support.

But Johansen said moreassistance is still needed.

She’s asked each charterschool to provide a priority “wishlist” of equipment, supplies, materials and services they require.From there, Kamehameha classrepresentatives will determinewhich of the priorities they canfulfill – either solely or by com-bining with other classes.

Donations will be gatheredover the summer with a presen-tation made to the schools inSeptember near the beginning ofthe school year.

Kamehameha alumni contributing tosuccess at Ka Waihona O Ka Na`auao

W hen Ka Waihona O Ka Na`auao opened its doors in 2002, the

public charter school had 68 students and was located in

remote Wai`anae Valley.

In 2003, the institution moved to the vacant Cornet Store in

Makaha Valley with an expanded enrollment of 128 students.

Today, with 304 students in grades K-6, Ka Waihona occupies

the former Nanaikapono Elementary School campus site in Nanakuli,

with expansion plans to include middle-school pupils underway.

The school recently achieved the highest Hawai`i State

Assessment scores in the Wai`anae district, and earned the desired

“adequate yearly progress” distinction, as required under the federal

No Child Left Behind Act.

Ka Waihona O Ka Na`auao is proud to have more than 15

faculty, staff and school board members who are alumni of

Kamehameha Schools.

“I’m proud of our faculty,” said principal Alvin Parker ’71.

“The majority of them are under the age of 30, and 80 percent of

them have master’s degrees.”

“Our local school board chairperson is Roberta Waialae Searle

’65,” said Ka Waihona instructor Moana Mendoza Medeiros ’93.

“Aunty Roberta is a business woman and mother of two students

who attend Ka Waihona, and she demands our highest integrity.

“At our helm is principal Parker, and the two of them have

worked courageously to build a secure, academically sound, cultural

and community-driven school for the haumana and `ohana we serve.

”As Kamehameha alumni, their spirit to genuinely live the legacy

of Princess Pauahi and serve fellow Hawaiians through education is

truly inspiring.”

Johansen said there is acorrelation between these charter

schools and Kamehameha. ‘They’re helping to keep the

Hawaiian culture, history andlanguage alive and using ourculture to give these kids a senseof identity and boost their self-esteem. It’s exactly what we do atKamehameha,” she said.

Johansen also reminded allKamehameha alumni of the rolethat Princess Pauahi has playedin each of their lives.

“It’s important for anyonewho has received Pauahi’s gift to have the mindset of trying tomake a difference, especially inthe lives of our Hawaiian youngpeople, because that’s what shedid for us.

“Our alumni members are a very generous and giving groupof people. It’s just a matter ofthem realizing how much we’vereceived, and that in turn, weshould be out there making adifference in the Hawaiiancommunity.”

The Harold K. L. CastleFoundation has stepped

forward as a collaborator withthe Ke Ali`i Pauahi Foundationand Kamehameha Schools with a five-year grant totaling $1.25million.

Funds from the grant willbe used to provide educationalprograms, community initiativesand training for Department ofEducation staff serving childrenfrom birth through third grade in select communities through-out the state.

“Kamehameha Schools is committed to an educational focuson the prenatal to 8-year-old population,” said Dee Jay Mailer,chief executive officer of Kamehameha Schools and president ofKAPF. “We are extremely happy that the Castle Foundation sharesa similar interest.

“Our overarching shared goal of this collaboration is to buildcapacity in several Windward O`ahu communities so that everychild has the best possible chance to meet or exceed readingstandards by the end of third grade.”

“Native Hawaiian children in DOE schools in communitieslike Waimänalo, Ko`olauloa and Ko`olaupoko will benefit as fundswill be utilized to directly support efforts to raise reading achieve-ment and learning opportunities,” added Lynn Maunakea,executive director of KAPF.

Since 1962, the Harold K. L. Castle Foundation has worked tobuild resources for Hawai`i’s future. Current priorities includepublic education redesign and enhancement, near-shore marineresource conservation, and strengthening vibrant communities inWindward O`ahu.

“We have to see where andhow we can all work together andwhere we can supplement otherprograms that are already outthere and achieving success.”

Chang said that asKamehameha focuses on earlychildhood education, tutoring and mentoring, counseling andenrichment programs, a keyelement is increasing literacyamong all learners. One of sevenkey indicators in Kamehameha’s

Education Strategic Plan is tomeasure increased literacyachievement.

“We’ve currently positionedour Literacy, Instruction andSupport team as an early inter-vention strategy, but literacy is astrand that has to run through allprograms beyond grade three,”she said.

“Literacy is key to studentsuccess. I just returned from anational conference where literacywas emphasized as being essen-tial to student success. Beyondelementary school, support forliteracy instruction decreases. Asnon-reading students progress

through the system, they fall fur-ther behind and eventually dropout of school, usually by the endof grade nine.”

Chang said that with thenew Education Strategic Plan and through the CommunityEducation Implementation unit,Kamehameha looks forward toexponentially increasing servicesto Hawaiian learners whileassisting them in achieving theirhighest potential.

“With the EducationStrategic Plan in place, we are nowmuch more focused, and I think itbrings a lot more integrity to theprogram implementation process.”

United States who will serve aslocal representatives on the “AirForce Chief of Staff’s Civic LeaderGroup.” The group will meet atleast twice a year to receive brief-ings, share views, and exchangeideas on Air Force activities. Optometrist Dr. Seulyn LeeAu ’75 is featured in the Spring2006 issue of HMSA’s Island Scenemagazine in an article titled“Sharing Her Vision.” Au creditsKamehameha for her success.Kamehameha awarded Seulyn a partial scholarship to PacificUniversity and the PennsylvaniaCollege of Optometry. After grad-uating in 1982 and taking herlicensing exams, she was told shewas the first Native Hawaiian tobecome an optometrist. Dr. JaimeLee Asao Rizzo ’84has been promoted with tenure to associate professor of chemistryat Pace University in New YorkCity. Professor Rizzo’s researchwith antibacterial and antifungalsurfaces has led to two patentsand two other patents that arepending. Jaime has co-authored a book as well entitled Synthesis of Carbon-Phosphorus Bonds and iscurrently writing an organicchemistry textbook. Class of ’78 Planning for 2007 Alumni Luau

M embers of the class of 1978 have begun planning for

the 2007 Alumni Lu`au to be held on the Kapalama

Campus on June 9, 2007.

The class has also been working with KuPono, the Hawaiian

Club at Windward Community College, to malama Kiheipua

lo`i kalo every other weekend since June of 2005. The faithful

“lo`i gang” sends a big mahalo to Thomas Young ’76, alaka`i

for Kiheipua, for bringing the group back to its roots.

Kalo harvested in June from the site will be used for the

2006 Alumni Lu`au, put on by the class of ’77. The class of ’76

was the first Kamehameha class to use Kiheipua to grow its own

kalo for use at the 2005 lu`au.

Alumni Lu`au 2007 co-chairs Coleen Akiona Ka`anehe and

Hoku Keolanui are inviting fellow 78ers to join them in shad-

owing this year’s Alumni Lu`au on June 10. For more information,

OnJan. 28, alumni members living inthe Midwest region hosted theThird Annual All-Hawai`i-AlumniConnection at the Marriott inChicago. J. Hinano Keliikoa Lee’55 spearheaded efforts to draw asmany Kamehameha alumni andother Hawaiians living in theregion to the event. More than 100 alumni came from Indiana,Kansas, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinoisand Ohio. land to what is now known as KamehamehaSchools, formerly the Bishop Estate. All of theprofits go to the maintaining of the three campuseson the islands of O`ahu, Maui, and Hawai`i. Today,Kamehameha Schools is worth more than fivebillion dollars.

I haven’t always appreciated going toKamehameha High School. The eyes that stare aswe walk wearing our uniforms in public can besomewhat annoying, not to mention the four to six hours of homework and studying every day.

However, I have consistently appreciatedPauahi’s generous heart and sincere concern for the Hawaiian race.

On the last day of school, the last time that I will ever chant before the morning announce-ments, I will hold my head high, perhaps with atear in my eye, and in my heart, convey feelings of gratitude to Pauahi for her vision of assisting her people.

Hawai`i Campus senior Rochelle Meyers, who willattend BYU-Provo in the fall, wrote this essay describingher school life at Kamehameha for use with her collegeapplication.

We begin chanting in Hawaiian, asking per-mission to enter, practicing ancient protocol. Ourvoices resonate through the halls as my teacherwaits patiently for her turn at the door.

As soon as we finish our chant, she replies,chanting words of invitation to enter the classroomwith open hearts and minds, ready to learn.Following her chant, we bow our heads as theprincipal offers a prayer, asking the Lord to watchover us.

Eventually, we quietly enter the classroom tohear the announcements. I attend a school thatblends ancient Hawaiian traditions with Christianvalues. I attend Kamehameha Schools Hawai`iCampus.

Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, one of the last monarchs of the Kingdom of Hawai`i, stated in her will that she wanted to create a school forHawaiians that is based on Hawaiian culture and Christianity.

At the time, Hawaiians were dying fromdisease and living in poverty. She left all of her
