Intermediate Apprentice of the

Year title in the regional finals

of the National Apprenticeship

Awards 2013. The result was

announced at a prestigious

awards ceremony, held at Kelham

Hall in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The award is the latest accolade in a highly successful apprenticeship. Seventeen year-old Conan has been with us at the Academy since September 2012 where he has undergone rigorous culinary and service training under the support of the Academys professional trainers. Furthermore he obtained a valuable work experience opportunity at the renowned Manoir Aux Quat Saisons, which has seen him develop his skills to become one of our star apprentices.

Conan will now go through to a final, national judging stage and be invited to attend The Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC on 14th November 2013 where the National Apprenticeship Award 2013 winners will be announced.

Commenting on the significance of the award and apprenticeships Conan said: My apprenticeship has changed the way I think. It has motivated me, made me competitive and helped me to focus on what I want to do with my life. The

experience has made me realise I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it and I look forward to the finals.

Charnwoods academy manager, Craig Harrison, further added: I am so pleased for Conan; this award is a great reflection of his developing skills and prodigious natural ability, it serves as a fantastic example for young people, demonstrating the progression from school to employment through apprenticeship training. We wish him the best of luck in the next stage of the awards.

When Dave Cox, licensee of The Anchor Inn in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, heard about the BII Level 2 Apprenticeship in Licensed Hospitality, he recognised this as a potential solution to a staffing issue.

Dave has been at the Anchor for seven years, following a career in the Met Police, and throughout that time he has employed a young man, Jack Somerfield, who began as an odd job worker at the age of twelve and has now progressed to bar and cellar work.

Jack, now 18, has learning difficulties and after spending some time at college, realised that he needed to seek an alternative career. Dave recognised Jacks ability and had been developing his skills as a member of his bar team but the introduction of the apprenticeship presented a clear opportunity to formalise the training and allow Jack to gain a qualification for his talents.

With the support of Charnwoods training officer Liz Roche, along with Daves mentoring skills, Jack is now on his way to achieving a well deserved qualification. Dave said:

It hasnt always been easy and Jack struggles with some of the technical qualifications, but it is clear that he has a lot of ability in his practical skills and we intend to persevere to bring this to a positive conclusion and give Jack the recognition he deserves.

Jack is thrilled with the opportunity he has been given and said: I love working at the Anchor and look forward to completing my apprenticeship.

Dave is a strong believer in the value of training, having undergone a number of BII courses himself, and ensures that all his key staff have a Personal Licence. In addition, the Anchor is used by local schools as a venue for work experience, which Dave is happy to support, sometimes involving youngsters with special learning needs.

Jeremy says, Its been great to get out and meet some of the team and getting to know them better on a personal level, not to mention finding out whats happening in the industry with our learners and employers! As the further education system continues to develop it has been immensely important for us to understand the needs of our customers. The next year is set to bring about a whole new approach to vocational learning in the industry. Im sure youve heard recently in the news that the Government has placed even greater emphasis on the importance of vocational learning in a bid to tackle unemployment levels. So with this encouraging news we intend to closely focus on our industry employers business needs to help them attract, retain and develop talent, improve service levels and give UK hospitality a boost.

Business planning for the year ahead is underway and our desire to be the leading provider, delivering quality learning and development solutions and learning to the hospitality sector, is as strong as ever! We are passionate about making a positive difference to the individuals we train and on the industry as a whole. Greene King develops next generation learningWe are helping Greene King revolutionise the way new team members at its Hungry Horse pubs develop their high standards of food preparation, presentation and service at 200+ sites across the UK.

We have worked together in partnership to develop a series of easy-to-use training apps that are accessible on both smartphones and tablets. Three specific subjects have been chosen to be the focus of an initial selection of 14 apps: steak grilling, burrito preparation and balloon modelling. Each one, accessed via a QR code, contains a video demonstrating the activity being performed perfectly. The apps are used to train new Hungry Horse team members, for both one-to-one coaching sessions and for refresher training.

A key benefit is that new recruits do not have to wait and ask for assistance; they can be independent in their learning and have immediate access to a library of skills and industry knowledge. On the back of the initial success, further apps are now being developed on a range of other topics.

charnwood newsIf youve thought about studying for a new qualification but youve never been able to afford it, the new 24+ advanced learning loan could help you get started.Learners aged 24 or above, who wish to study a Level 3 or Level 4 qualification in hospitality will be able to apply for an advanced learning for all 2013/2014 courses which have started on or after 1st August.

Am I eligible?Anyone studying for a Level 3 or 4 qualification aged 24 or over on the first day of their qualification, there is no upper age limit.

Anyone resident in the UK and having been resident in the UK for the past three years are eligible to apply.

What can I borrow?The minimum loan amount is 300, and is flexible - you can borrow all of the tuition fees or only part, and pay the rest yourself.
