Breakfast & Education We have heard many times the importance of having breakfast in the morning. There

is an increase in the number of studies about the effects of having breakfast and

education.

Breakfast helps improve mental performance and concentration during morning

activities. Children who skip breakfast will be more sluggish, less attentive, and have less

energy to carry out their morning tasks. Teachers observe that children who come to

school hungry experience more learning difficulties compared to well-nourished

children. Studies show that breakfast eaters perform much better in their school work

and show extra energy in sports and other physical activities. (About Kids Health)

Students who are given nutritious breakfasts daily make significant improvements in

learning, school attendance, behavior and self-esteem. (Ottawa Network for

Education)

It is important for students to come to school having had a good breakfast at home.

However, we do realize that there are instances where, because of circumstances,

children miss breakfast or they had breakfast, but are hungry once they get to school.

Our school breakfast program is for students who need to have something for these

reasons. All students who need to have a quick grab-and-go breakfast option are

welcome to participate in our breakfast program, but it is not a substitute for having

breakfast at home.

We would like to thank those families who have donated muffins to our breakfast

program. They are greatly appreciated. We will continue to take donations.

Monday – Muffins

Tuesday – Toast

Wednesday – Yogurt/Cheese and granola bar

Thursday – Oatmeal

Friday – Varies

Each day, fresh fruit is available for students to have

with the selected item.

Mental Math

Accountability Pillar Surveys Alberta Education is conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Surveys. Parents

of Grade 4-6 students may receive a survey mailed to their homes directly from

Alberta Education. In February, students in Division II and all teachers will be

completing their surveys online at school.

Respondents are expected to answer the questions based upon the experiences

they have had at their school. We strongly encourage you to participate as this is

our “school report card” and it is important to share what a great job we are all

doing! Survey results will be available to jurisdictions later in the spring.

Ms. Mason is looking for gr. 4, 5 & 6 students interested in joining the TES relay

team. TES will be competing in the 38th Annual Indoor Games at the Universiade Pavilion

(Butterdome). The Running Room Indoor Games (formally the Edmonton Journal Indoor

Games) is a community track and field event that allows children the opportunity to ex-

perience the thrill of competition - against themselves and each other.

Track events for girls and boys include an 8 x 200m relay event (200m = 1 lap in the But-

terdome).

The first practice/try out will be Thursday January 21. Unfortunately there will

be cuts if too many kids try out. There will be one team of girls and one team of boys. The

8 fastest kids will make each team.

Practices will be every Tuesday & Thursday at middle recess.

Competition will be at the Butterdome on Tuesday February 16 during

the school day. Parent volunteer drivers will be needed.

Please let Ms. Mason know if you are interested [email protected]

THE BOYS BASKETBALL

TEAM SLAM DUNKS !

In November, December

and January Thorsby's

practiced hard. They

have won their home and

away league games. The

Team will end their season

competing in the Black Gold's

District Basketball

Tournament, which will be

held January 15th & 16th.

Mr. Murphy's pregame pep

talk always ended with

"No going 200,000 MPH out

there...only 100,000 MPH !"

The team included;

Teig Waters, Carson Viglietti,

Ryan McLeod, Chase

Marquardt, Morgan

Lysgaard, Dylan Lizotte, Riley

Jacob, Ethen Hayman, Justin

Fritz, Ty Fritz, Kayden

Filipic and Colby Borys.

The boys were great

ambassadors for our school

and eager, energetic and

very coachable young men.

Thank you for the fun times!

Sincerely Mr. Murphy

they have improved. It has been

a pleasure coaching these

fun-loving, energetic girls.

Sincerely, Miss Hawkins and

Mrs. Rhody.
