SPRING 2020 TASTE OF THE TRAIL EGS GRAND OPENING COWBOY CAMP & MORE FAREWELL TO BOB TWO WOMEN LOOK WEST EXHIBIT CUERO TEXAS Taste of the Trail Celebrates 20 Years A nniversaries are very special occasions. They mark a point in time when individuals, families and even organizations can reflect on achievements, relationships and meaningful events. Anniversaries are particularly important in reviewing one’s fulfilled goals and of course an opportunity to celebrate, while planning for the future. So! Polish your boots and head out to Bellevue Ranch to help us celebrate the museum’s 20th-year anniversary. This year’s e v e n t , scheduled for Saturday, April 18th, will be hosted by Honorary Co-Chairs, Bill and Nancy Blackwell. The 2020 celebration also marks the 10th Taste of the Trail fundraising event - held every other year since 2002. The festive evening will begin at the Cardwell Flats Cantina for cocktails and viewing of the live and silent-auction items available. Guests will enjoy heaps of hearty Texas fare provided by Perini Ranch Steakhouse Caterers. Tom and Lisa Perini have catered for many a Texan, from Buffalo Gap to the Texas Governor’s Mansion to the White House in Washington, D.C. After dinner, join us under the big tent for the liveliest live-auction of the year by celebrated auctioneer, Joe Adams. Last, but not least, be ready to do some two-stepping under the stars with Gary P. Nunn. Committees for this year’s Taste of the Trail have been busy planning to make this year’s event the very special celebration that a 20-year anniversary commands. Proceeds will benefit the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum’s exhibits, educational progams, operations and special projects. Your generous participation in our Taste of the Trail is what makes the museum and community center sustainable. We greatly appreciate your support and hope that you’ll join us for the memorable occasion. Sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are available by contacting our honorary chairs or the museum office at 361-277- 2866 or [email protected].

Cowboy Camp 2020 is right around the corner with two new summer camps added for your kids to enjoy and learn. The 10th annual Cowboy Camp will be held June 8th-12th. As CTHM continues to expand its educational opportunities, we have added two additional camps aimed at providing experiences for children who have either aged out of or are currently too young for Cowboy Camp. Cowboy Survivalist Camp will be held July 7th-9th for children ages 13 to 16. This camp will focus on teaching campers the skills used by cowboys to survive while out on the trail. Activities will include learning to navigate by compass and the stars, how to build a camp fire, and animal and plant safety. The camp will culminate in a team surviv-alist course where campers will demonstrate the skills they have learned. Little Cowpokes Camp will be held July 21st – 23rd, geared towards young children ages 3-5. Camp will focus on teaching young children the stories of the cattle drives and cowboys, and the role they played in shaping Texas. Campers will be able to participate in activities focused on arts and crafts connected to these stories, as well as opportunities to have hands on experience with the items the cowboys used while on the trail.

Cowboy Camps for Summer 2020

CTHM welcomes Bryan Gonzalez as Education Coordinator. Bryan brings his experience of working in both the fields of education and museums, with previous work at the Buffalo Bill Cody Center for the West and the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. Bryan helped develop several of the new educational programs that the museum will be offering in 2020, including adult education classes, homeschool days, and curriculum based field trip classes.

T he Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum is pleased to announce the completion of

the English-German School. The grand opening will take place on March 26th.

Guests will have the chance to learn of the various educational programs and events that are planned. The new opportunities for usage range from a sound studio allowing the public to record oral histories and the kitchen space which will provide a location for classes on the canning, preserving, and cooking techniques of 19th century Texans.

Looking towards the future of the schoolhouse, the building will be open for rentals to the public to host a variety of events. Work will continue on the grounds surrounding the

schoolhouse to complete plans of raised gardens allowing students to engage and learn about the types of plants native to the area. The school-house will also host planned adult education classes allowing guests the chance to explore various topics associ-ated with Texas and ranching history in a hands-on and innovative way.

Our deepest thanks to the various donors and institutions who made possible the dream of bringing the schoolhouse back to life. Special thanks to Chairman of the Board, Robert Oliver, historical preservationist, Fisher-Heck Architects, and the renovation work of Horizon MiIlworks, LLC. We invite you all to come and experience where the tradition of Cuero pride in education all began.

Texas, at its heart, is a land of giants and legends. Sadly, this past December 23rd, the people of this state and nation said goodbye to

one of the largest of these legends; Bob “Daddy-O” Wade. A true Texan and Cowboy at heart, Bob will be remembered as one of the most inspirational Western artists the world has known who shaped much of the “Cosmic Cowboy” counterculture. From his childhood growing up in the Lone Star State, Bob Wade poured his talent into many iconic pieces of art that truly captured both the history and culture of the state. Bob is best known for his sculptures that dot the Texas landscape, especially his larger than life cowboy boots, located in San Antonio at North Star Mall on Loop 410, which earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. He also created a two-story saxophone at the House of Blues in Houston. Bob was also known for his work of hand tinting

historic black and white photographs in vivid colors that helped bring the past to life. It is from these hand tinted works that we find Bob’s personal connection to Cuero. From early in the history of the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum, Bob Wade worked with the museum to create several hand tinted images, several of which were featured prominently in the recent “Cuero Celebrates Warhol” exhibit. During the opening night reception, Wade graciously met many of the town’s citizens and shared many a heartfelt word of praise for this community and the accomplishments of the CTHM.

The people of Cuero have lost a truly great friend and wonderful artist with Daddy-O’s passing, and we offer our deepest sympathies to his wife, Lisa and daughter, Rachel. While we say “goodbye” to a true Texas legend, we can all give our sincere thank you to the larger than life artist, the “Cosmic Cowboy.”

“Two Women Look West” Exhibitat CTHM Fall 2020

The view of life on King Ranch through the camera

lens as seen by two extraordinary women will grace the walls of the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum this October. The exhibit will be based on the book Two Women Look West: Photographs of King Ranch by Helen C. Kleberg and Toni Frissell.

The exhibit will feature some of the photographs from world renowned photographer Toni Frissell, but will focus on images taken by Helen C. Kleberg, wife of Robert (Bob) Justus Kleberg, Jr. of her surroundings on King Ranch.

Frissell, raised in a privileged family in New York City, received her initial photographic training from her older brother. Soon after, she was hired by Vogue to work on small photographic assignments. In the early 1950s, Frissell became the first woman sports photographer for Sports Illustrated. During World War II she served as a photojour-nalist and war correspondent.

By the time Frissell received her first invitation to visit the Kleberg’s in 1939, she was already an established professional photographer. She spent the next five years documenting King Ranch, resulting in her photographic essay, The King Ranch, 1939 – 1944. She later returned to the Ranch for various assignments where she captured some of her most stunning color photographs of the land and cattle.

Kleberg grew up in Arlington, Virginia where her interest in

photography began as a teenager. In 1926 she married Bob Kleberg. After moving to King Ranch she bought her first Leica camera – the first handheld 35mm camera with interchangeable lenses. Its

convenient size allowed her to adapt to the ever-changing activities of the livestock on the Ranch. For Kleberg, this became a lifelong ambition.

Two Women Look West: Photographs of King Ranch debuted at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts in 2006. It was the first time Helen Kleberg’s images were displayed for public viewing. This exciting exhibit offers two distinct, yet complementary, views of modern ranching during its heyday. Both ladies focus their cameras on similar subjects, communicating their particular relationship to the land. Kleberg approached her subject matter with recognition, while Frissell looked at it with a sense of discovery. Kleberg’s views are intimate documents of her life at King Ranch. while Frissell’s work is more of discovery and fascination with the open land and its vastness. Both women share their deepest respect for their subject, of which they held separate and independent views.

Kleberg and Frissell’s photographs reveal not only their relationship to King Ranch, but their friend-ship and their practice as photogra-phers as well.. Their admiration for each other’s work is evident in the images they took of one another. (Lisa A. Neely, Wellspring, Vol. 20, No.2, Spring 2008, p.13-14.)

The Two Women Look West exhibit will be on display at CTHM October 9 to November 1, 2020. For more information, call the CTHM office at 361-277-2866.
