IntroductionWhat follows will be a journey through time.

We will take a look at a number of men whowere powerful in one way or the other.

Many of whom started from scratch and workedthemselves up.

We’ll also see other things related to a rise of power



Joseph Rudyard Kipling



The makings of a powerful

manO Born 1865 in Bombay, India

O His parents sent him back to Englandfor schooling



O Came back to India at age 17.

O Started working as a journalist

O Worked himself up to assistant editorafter five years



Breakthrough as a writerO He had written thirty-nine stories for

the newspaper, and included them in

Plain Tales from the Hills. He wasonly 22 years old.



World famousO In 1894 he published two novels: the jungle books

O The part most of us are familiar withhas to do with the abandoned child‘Mowgli’, who is raised by wolves inthe Indian jungle.

Fun factO The jungle books also inspired the

company ‘kipling’ to use the author’s

name.

‘If’ you want to be a man

O Kipling urged his son to go to war.

O The application was turned down

twice after a failed medicalexamination due to poor eyesight



‘If’ you want to join for battleO Kipling asked for a little help from his

friend Lord Roberts, commander-in-

chief of the British Army, and colonelof the Irish Guards.

O John was accepted into the IrishGuards. He was sent into battle as a

reinforcement contingent.

The symbol wasn’t invented by the Nazis.

Abraham ‘Abe’ Lincoln



The self made president

O He was born in Kentucky on thetwelfth of February 1809

O He had only one year of formaleducation

O Through self education and apowerful personality he became acountry lawyer



O He got elected into the house of representatives in 1834

O In 1847 he became the president of the United States



Power to the people!O His most famous accomplishment is

abolishing slavery

O It didn’t happen without bloodshedthough…



The civil war (1861 – 1865)O When Lincoln wanted to put a stop to

slavery, opinions collided

O The South or the ‘confederacy’wanted to keep slavery, referring tothe right of self government as anargument



O The North sided with Lincoln ( alsocalled the Union)

O After much struggle, and many livestaken, the North won

Jefferson Davis,President of theconfederacy



His death (1865)O He was assassinated at the Ford’s

theatre, Washington

O The assassin was John Wilkes Booth,an actor who stepped in thepresidential box and shot him.



O He is still one of the most popularpresidents

O He has a federal public holiday on hisbirthday (Twelfth of February)

O The only other president to have that

honour is George Washington

Abraham Lincoln did not use have a beardO He grew his famous beard after he had

received a letter by a eleven year old girl,in which she asked him to grow a beard.

About the poem 1861Why this poem?

The title is ‘1861’, the start of the civil war, which we

just saw. I also think that this poem shows why

conservative America despised him, as he didn’t make

much of an effort to hide his sexuality.

What is described in this poem?

He describes the year 1861 as a soldier in the civil war,marching from place to place.
