…If you can talk with crowds and keep yourvirtue,' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common

touch,if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,If all men count with you, but none too much;If you can fill the unforgiving minuteWith sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son! From: last paragraph of the poem ‘if’

A powerful poem

 The Question (1916)Brethren, how shall it fare with me

When the war is laid aside,If it be proven that I am heFor whom a world has died?

If it be proven that all my good,And the greater good I will make,Were purchased me by a multitudeWho suffered for my sake?

 That I was delivered by mere mankindVowed to one sacrifice,And not, as I hold them, battle-blind,But dying with open eyes?

 That they did not ask me to draw the sword

When they stood to endure their lot-- That they only looked to me for a word,And I answered I knew them not?

If it be found, when the battle clears,

 Their death has set me free, Then how shall I live with myself through the yearsWhich they have bought for me?

Brethren, how must it fare with me,

Or how am I justified,If it be proven that I am heFor whom mankind has died,If it be proven that I am heWho being questioned denied?

Satire on his poem

 Take up the White’s Man’sburden. To you who thus succeedIn civilizing savage hordes, They owe a debt, indeed;

Concessions, pensions,salaries,And privilege and right—With outstretched hands youraised to blessGrab everything in sight.

 Take up the White Man’sburdenAnd if you write in verse,Flatter your nation’s vicesAnd strive to make them

worse. Then learn that if with piouswords You ornament each phrase,In a world of cantinghypocrites This kind of business pays.

1861

ARM’D year! year of the struggle!No dainty rhymes or sentimental love verses for you, terrible year!Not you as some pale poetling, seated at a desk, lisping cadenzaspiano;

But as a strong man, erect, clothed in blue clothes, advancing,

carrying a rifle on your shoulder,With well-gristled body and sunburnt face and hands–with a knife inthe belt at your side,As I heard you shouting loud–your sonorous voice ringing across thecontinent;

 Your masculine voice, O year, as rising amid the great cities,

Amid the men of Manhattan I saw you, as one of the workmen, thedwellers in Manhattan;Or with large steps crossing the prairies out of Illinois and Indiana,Rapidly crossing the West with springy gait, and descendingthe Alleghanies; Or down from the great lakes, or in Pennsylvania, or on deck along

the Ohio river;

Or southward along the Tennessee or Cumberland rivers, or atChattanooga on the mountain top,Saw I your gait and saw I your sinewy limbs, clothed in blue, bearingweapons, robust year;

Heard your determin’d voice, launch’d forth again and again; Year that suddenly sang by the mouths of the round-lipp’d cannon,I repeat you, hurrying, crashing, sad, distracted year.

About the poem 1861Why this poem?

 The title is ‘1861’, the start of the civil war, which we

just saw. I also think that this poem shows why

conservative America despised him, as he didn’t make

much of an effort to hide his sexuality.

What is described in this poem?

He describes the year 1861 as a soldier in the civil war,marching from place to place.
