This booklet has many interesting courses and activities taught by certified teachers. We encourage you to register your child/children for as many courses as you wish. We’ve done our best to accommodate the needs of children of all ages, through four themes: academic, recreational, enrichment and remedial classes. Welcome to our summer school program at the Cumberland School District! This booklet has many interesting courses and activities taught by certified teachers. We encourage you to register your child/children for as many courses as you wish. Registration Procedures 1. The course booklet is laid out by dates with the youngest grades first.

However, some classes cover many grades (2-4 for instance); please review all pages to determine which classes would be best for your child(ren). The location of each class is indicated with the course description. Please check the dates and times carefully. After you choose the courses you are interested in taking, go to http://bit.ly/2HxXBL4 and complete the online form to register.

6. If you are unable to register online, please stop in at the Cumberland Middle School office and they will help you complete the form.

7. District students are given equal opportunity to enroll in classes of their choice, but due to size limits they may have to pick another class.

8. If your child has a food allergy or any health conditions, please let the teacher know.

Arrival and Departure Policy 1. The buildings will be open at 8:00 a.m. unless the class actually begins before

that time. 2. Students must be picked up no later than 15 minutes after the class is

completed. Elementary students will not be allowed to wait unsupervised outside.

BUS TRANSPORTATION

If you are interested in using bus transportation to or from Summer School, please fill out the online bus registration form only if you intend to use the bussing. Transportation will be available for your child to arrive by 8:00 a.m. and to return home after 12:00 p.m. only during the first 3 weeks of summer school. There will be a shuttle bus between the elementary, middle school/high school, and Islander Park at 10:00 and 12:00. You do not need to sign up for this transportation.

INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION In case of bad weather, WJMC will be notified and the coaches will let the elementary school know if a class is cancelled. Please feel free to call us at 822-5123 if you are wondering if the class will be held because of weather conditions.

KIDS CLUB REGISTRATION FORM A kid’s club program will be provided from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for students in grades 4K-4th (current grade) if there are enough participants. If you are interested in this program, please stop at the elementary office and pick up the form and return it as soon as possible.

JUNE 10-20

SWING INTO SUMMER! June 10-13, 17-20 Mondays-Thursdays (4 days a week for 2-weeks) Time: 8:30-12:00 Grade: Students entering 4K in the fall Instructor: Mrs. Schramski & Mrs. Stowell Location: 4K classrooms Join us for some summer fun at the 4K program. We will play, make friends and learn about school. Some of our activities will include singing songs, playing games, doing art and science projects and celebrating the “best of summer”. (If your child has a food allergy, please let the teacher know.) Registration forms for the 4-year-old Kindergarten have been given to the appropriate students.

JUNE 10-20

KINDERGARTEN EXPLORERS June 10-13 and June 17-20 Mondays-Thursdays (4 days a week for 2-weeks) Time: 8:30-12:00 Grade: students entering Kindergarten in the fall Instructors: Kindergarten Staff Location: Kindergarten classrooms Come and explore the kindergarten classrooms as we spend time doing fun projects practicing our cutting and gluing skills. We will also make new friends so we are ready for kindergarten in the fall! (If your child has a food allergy, please let the teacher know.) Registration forms for Kindergarten Explorers have been given to the appropriate students.

JUNE 10-14 GETTING FANCY WITH NANCY June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2 Instructor: Mrs. Zipperer Location: ES-S. Strangstalien’s Come spend the day getting Fancy with Nancy. We will read many Fancy Nancy stories, play games, make projects such as “Spectacular Spectacles”, decorate cupcakes and then have our own fancy bake sale. Lastly, to conclude our fancy week, we will have a pajama party under the stars. This class will incorporate reading strategies, vocabulary skills, sight words, counting and making change all in a fancy, fun way! FLAG FOOTBALL 1 & 2 June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2 Instructors: Coach McCreary & Coach Strangstalien Location: Endeavor Stadium This course is an introduction in to the great sport of football. During this course, we will be learning some of the basics of football. We will learn about the different positions and we will work on different skills that are required for this great game. We will also play football related games at the end of class. COWS, PLOWS & SOWS I June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 1,2 Instructor: Mrs. Odden Location: ES-Atkin’s This course is an introduction to the world of agriculture. We will learn about farm animals, crops, plants, flowers and make ice cream. Come join the fun! ADD, SUBTRACT, EAT I or II June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 (I) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 1,2,3 Instructor: Ms. Gobel Location: ES-Morrison’s Students will be focusing on adding and subtracting with special treats! Students will also be working through different interactive math stations. We will always end the day with a math book.

OUTDOOR PE GAMES & MORE! June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2,3,4 Instructor: Ms. Green Location: ES gym Come join us for summer PE. We will have tons of fun playing cooperative, invasion and skills based outdoor activities, including tagging, parachute fun, team games and old school games – such as hopscotch, hide and go seek and freeze tag. Have some fun playing in the field like kiddos should do in the summer time! CARD GAMES I or II June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 (I) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 1,2,3,4 Instructor: Ms. K. DeLong Location: ES-Sandman’s Come and learn how to play family favorite card games such as king’s corners, spoons, crazy eights, war and much more! BOOMWHACKERS, BONGOS & BUCKETS June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2,3,4 Instructor: Mr. Warner Location: ES-Warner’s Didn’t get to play that drum, tone chime, boom whacker, giant recorder or vibraslap in music class? Now’s your chance! We will play fun music using all the instruments in the music room. FITNESS OUTDOOR FUN June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 1,2,3,4 Instructor: Ms. Green Location: ES gym Come join us for summer PE. We have tons of fun playing cooperative, invasion and skills based outdoor games. Kids will improve their physical fitness with games they can play at home or on the playground. Activities include team games and old school games – such as kick the can, four square and capture the flag. Have some fun playing in the field like kiddos should do in the summer time! FEAR FACTOR I or II June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 (I) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 1,2,3,4,5 Instructor: Mrs. Sommerfeld Location: ES-Sommerfeld’s What do you fear the most? Is it spiders? Snakes? Mice? How far are you willing to go to test yourself? Come and take the challenge!

DISNEY MANIA I June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2,3,4,5 Instructor: Mrs. Miller Location: ES-Atkins’ Do you love all things Disney? In this course, we will watch Disney movies, color Disney coloring pages, read Disney stories, play Disney games, etc. Come enjoy all of your favorite things that involve Disney! ALL ABOUT PETS June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 1,2,3 Instructor: Mrs. Zipperer Location: ES-S. Strangstalien’s Pets can come in all shapes and sizes. They are special to us in so many ways. Come spend the week focusing on these lovable critters. We will read stories, make crafts, play games, make take-home pet treats and so much more. COLORFUL CREATIONS I or II June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 (I) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 1,2,3,4 Instructor: Mrs. Picknell Location: ES-Picknell’s This class allows students to get creative and have fun exploring a variety of colorful art. From painting with ice to tie dying, students will have a chance to experiment with all kinds of colorful art! EXPLORING CUMBERLAND I or II June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 (I) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 2,3,4 Instructor: Mrs. Torrison Location: ES-Torrison’s Let’s explore our wonderful community! We will walk or ride a bus to tour different businesses and attractions in Cumberland. Since we will be walking daily, please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. BASKETBALL FOR GILRS & BOYS June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 3,4,5 Instructors: Mr. & Mrs. Majewski Location: ES gym Basic basketball FUNdamentals for boys and girls, they will learn offensive skills of shooting, ball-handling and passing. Play 5-on-5 with officiating/teaching them the rules while scrimmaging, along with having a lot of FUN!

VOLLEYBALL FOR GIRLS & BOYS June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 3,4,5 Instructor: Mrs. Majewski & Ms. Lesnar Location: ES gym We will work on the basic FUNdamentals and introduce game rules and strategies of the volleyball for boys and girls. Play volleyball while officiating/teaching them the rules while scrimmaging, along with having a lot of FUN! ROCKETS, VOLCANOES & BRIDGES 3-5 June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 3,4,5 Instructor: Mrs. Donica Location: ES-Klatt’s We will be building and launching model rockets; creating and erupting volcanoes; and finally building bridges to see which one will hold the most weight. SNACKS & RELAX I June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 3,4,5,6 Instructor: Mrs. Marschall Location: MS-Marschall’s Are you ever at home and nobody will make you a quick and easy snack? If so, this class is for you! We will be making snacks every day so then you can make your own when you are craving a tasty treat. After we snack, we will be relaxing! Whether that is watching movies, coloring, going for walks, or simply chit-chatting. **Please be aware that food products are used that may contain food allergens such as nuts, eggs, milk, wheat & soy, so let the teacher know of any food allergies that your student may have**. BEDROOM DÉCOR I June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 3,4,5,6 Instructor: Mrs. Marschall Location: MS-Marschall’s Do you need to brighten up your bedroom? This might be the class for you! You will bedazzle your bedroom. We will be making dream catchers, friendship bracelets, flowers and strings of cloth and we will be decorating a picture frame and canvas. Your friends will go crazy trying to figure out where you bought these trendy bedroom treasures. Come join the fun and sign up for this class!

PIZZA, PIZZA, PIZZA June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 4,5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mr. Hullander Location: MS-Hullander’s Pizza is what we all love. Let’s make 15 different types of pizza that are delicious! We will make regular pizza, as well as Mexican, buffalo chicken, barbeque chicken, s’mores, and many dessert pizzas. We will experiment with different pizza sauces, crusts, meats, and toppings. Let’s face it… pizza is KING! ICKY, STICKY, OOEY, GOOEY SCIENCE June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 4,5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mr. Hullander Location: MS-Hullander’s Who doesn’t love to make something disgusting?! We will make homemade slime, Gak, Flarp, putty, caramels, marshmallows, toffee and many more gooey surprises. Get ready to get slimy and have some fun! CSD STEM SQUAD I or II June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 (I) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 5,6,7 Instructor: Mrs. Simon Location: MS-Lundquist’s Want to know what cool things Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics have to offer? Join Mrs. Simon this session to experience the amazing world of STEM! By discovering how math and science can be fun, learn how your investigations today can make you the innovators of tomorrow! Activities during this class may include the following: Tynker computer coding - engineering challenges such as making balloon powered cars and candy launching catapults - discovering animal adaptations - exploring mystery STEM kits and much, much more! FUN WITH DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mr. Nugent Location: MS- #207 In this course, you will learn to use the different setting on the camera and how to take better pictures. You will also get to use more advanced digital cameras. Cameras will be provided or you can bring your own. You will be taking photos every day and will review them with other class members. Creative use of photography to create interesting photos.

ROCKETS, VOLCANOES & BRIDGES 5-8 June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mrs. Donica Location: ES-Klatt’s We will be building and launching model rockets; creating and erupting volcanoes; and finally building bridges to see which one will hold the most weight. NEWS & EVENTS PHOTOGRAPHY June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mr. Nugent Location: MS- #207 In this course, you will be working individually and in a group to produce a slideshow depicting Summer School and the classes offered. Photos could be submitted to the administration to use to promote summer school or for use in the school’s newsletter or web site. GAME ON! June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mrs. Gramberg Location: MS-Gramberg’s Chess, checkers, clue, monopoly, sorry, Yahtzee, Wii, 500 rummy, skip-bo, sets, cribbage…. This is a one stop shop to get your game on! You name it, we can play it. Come test your gaming strategies. BOOKS MADE INTO MOVIES June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mrs. Gramberg Location: MS-Gramberg’s Do you enjoy reading books? How about watching movies? We will select a book to read and then watch the movie. We will snack on popcorn while enjoying the show! BEGINNING GUITAR June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 5,6,7,8,9 Instructor: Mr. Warner Location: ES-Warner’s For kids who have a guitar but don’t know how to play it. This class will get you started. Students must have their own guitar to bring to class. Guitar must be in good condition.

LEGOS IN THE LIBRARY I June 10-14 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mrs. Eggleston Location: MS library Create, build, and explore using lots and lots of LEGOS! There will be bins of bulk Legos for basic building and creating your own designs as well as several Lego building kits to put together according to the instructions or any way you’d like. MAKERSPACE I June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 5,6,7,8 Instructor: Mrs. Eggleston Location: MS library Create, build, design, code, record….there are no limits to what you can do in this course. MakerSpace is about making things happen, with and without technology. Activities may include: computer coding, green screen creations, robots and gizmos, duct tape crafts and so much more. You bring the ideas; I’ll bring the materials! THE TOTAL VOLLEYBALL EXPERIENCE June 10-14 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grade: 5,6,7,8 Instructors: J. Olson, M. Mary Location: HS gym Students will work to improve their volleyball skills as well as increase their quickness and vertical jumping ability. Hitting, passing and serving will be the main focus along with core strength with plyometrics. This program will help improve the entire game of a volleyball player.

BOOK & CRAFTS I June 17-21 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2 Instructor: Ms. Hanson Location: ES-Kolzow’s Let’s read some of our favorite picture books and use our own imagination as we bring our books to life through arts and crafts.

COWS, PLOWS & SOWS III June 17-21 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 1,2 Instructor: Mrs. Odden Location: ES-Atkin’s This course is an introduction to the world of agriculture. SLIMY SCIENCE June 17-21 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2,3 Instructor: Mrs. Picknell Location: ES-Picknell’s This class will be filled with icky, sticky science sure to be fun for all! We will be making homemade slime, oobleck, bubbles, sidewalk chalk and testing out some exciting experiments! NINJA WARRIOR 1-3 June 17-21 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2,3 Instructor: Ms. Green Location: ES gym Take the Ninja Warrior Challenge! Beginning Ninja Warriors will be training in various obstacle courses where they will get to do challenges just like the Ninja Warriors on TV!

CARNIVAL FUN I June 17-21 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 1,2,3 Instructor: Ms. Hanson Location: ES-Kolzow’s Who doesn’t LOVE carnivals? Join me in making our own DIY carnival games. We will test them out and win some prizes! CRAFTY CORNER 1-3 June 17-21 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2,3 Instructor: Mrs. Donica Location: ES-Klatt’s Do you like making crafts? Come join us as we make different crafts using beads, string, sand, bands and other commons items. There will be some great crafts to take home and enjoy or to give as gifts.

MUSICAL MADNESS June 17-21 Time: 8:30-10:00 Grades: 1,2,3,4 Instructor: Mr. Warner Location: ES-Warner’s Wild fun in the music room with musical games, dances and activities.. The cup game, musical chairs, Grizzly Bear, the freeze game, Old Gray Cat, parachute and streamer activities, crazy camp songs, folk dances, mallet madness, bean bags and much more. MINUTE TO WIN IT June 17-21 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 1,2,3,4 Instructor: Mrs. Picknell Location: ES-Picknell’s Come test your skills and complete minute to win it challenges with your friends! How many post-it can you stick on someone in a minute? Can you pick up marshmallows with chopsticks? Come find out with lots of crazy fun challenges! COOL CAMPING I June 17-21 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 1,2,3,4 Instructor: Mr. Warner Location: ES- Warner’s Make and eat cool campfire foods like s’mores and banana boats. Learn how to put up a tent and the correct way to pack a backpack. Sing campfire songs and tell campfire stories. Class members will need a small backpack. School backpacks will work fine. (class limit of 12 students) THE KINDNESS CLUB I or II June 17-21 Time: 8:30-10:00 (I) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 2,3,4 Instructor: Ms. K. DeLong Location: ES-Sandman’s When we treat others with kindness and empathy, we build stronger and healthier relationships at school, home and our community. Come along with us and learn how we can be kind to all people and show how much we appreciate them! We will visit local businesses and people within our community and shower them with random acts of kindness! Don’t forget to bring your creativity.

SILLY SLIME STORIES I or II June 17-21 Time: 8:30-10:00 (1) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 2,3,4 Instructor: Ms. Gobel Location: ES-Morrison’s Do you like to make slime and write stories? This is the class for you. A different kind of slime will be made every day. With every slime, students will write a “slimy story”. EXPLORING CUMBERLAND III or IV June 17-21 Time: 8:30-10:00 (III) or 10:30-12:00 (IV) Grades: 2,3,4 Instructor: Mrs. Torrison Location: ES-Torrison’s Let’s explore our wonderful community! In this class, we will be participating in girly activities that will build confidence and we will be playing games that build our friendship skills too! This class will include art projects, dancing all-about-me collages, self-care, talking circles and guest speakers. PLAYS, PLAYS, PLAYS June 17-21 Time: 8:30-12:00 (this class meets for both time slots) Grades: 2,3,4,5 Instructor: Mrs. Sommerfeld Location: ES-Sommerfeld’s Do you like being on stage? Do you like being in the spot light? Come and explore the world of theater from making props to acting! CAMP CODE-A-LOT I or II June 17-21 Times: 8;30-10:00 (I) or 10:30-12:00 (II) Grades: 3,4,5 Instructor: Mrs. Petzel Location: ES-Taylor’s Come and learn how to code! We will do both unplugged and plugged (iPads) activities that will get you thinking like a programmer.

ANIMAL VOLUNTEERS I June 17-21 Time: 8:30-12:00 (both time slots) Grades: 4,5,6,7,8,9,10 Instructor: Mrs. Zipperer Location: MS-Zipperer’s Do you love being with animals? Do you like hands on learning? Do you like making a difference? In this class, you will get the opportunity to do all three! Come join us for a week of volunteering at different locations such as Piddle Creek Kennels, the Humane Society and Nature’s Edge Therapy Center. We will spend each day helping these organizations by walking the dogs, cleaning kennels/stalls, learning animal care and whatever else needs to be done to help make a difference. You will need to dress in work (can get dirty) clothes, outside clothing and bring a refillable water bottle. Meet in Mrs. Zipperer’s room and a bus will leave for the different locations. (This class has a limit of 15 students) GIRL POWER II (5&6) June 17-21 Time: 10:30-12:00 Grades: 5 & 6 Instructor: Mrs. Marschall Location: MS-Marschall’s Come hang out with a bunch of girls and learn about creating a healthy, smart, positive lifestyle! Students will be trained in the safest tackling techniques practiced today. All coaches working this class have be trained in the USA Football tackling and injury prevention certification courses. Safe tackling techniques will be the emphasis of this course. Offensive and defensive skill development will also be worked on during this class.

This class will prepare students for the fall flag football season so it is highly encouraged that students wishing to participate this fall attend these sessions. GOLF June 10,12,14,17,19 Time: 8:00-9:30 for grades 7,8,9,10,11,12 Time: 9:30-11:00 for grades 4,5,6 Instructors: John and Carroll Schell Location: Cumberland Golf Course Students will experience golf through skill sessions involving gripping the club, swing mechanics, putting, chipping, pitching and driving. Golfers will learn the rules of the game and golf etiquette as well. Golfers will play several holes of golf during some of the sessions. Contest and games will give students opportunities to test their skills. A pitch, putt and drive contest will be held the last day.
