Pastor’s Letter Welcome back! School will be back in session in just another week and we return to the routine of the school/work year. I have been praying for you and all your summer travels. I hope it was refreshing and renewing. Summer time is excuse enough to get together with friends and family, to sit and grill, and to be. We gather and celebrate. This summer for me personally was filled with much celebration. Won tack and I celebrated ordination. My brother's wedding was a welcomed family reunion where over 154 of our family gathered. How do you celebrate? How do you express joy or excitement? I ask this as I celebrate our past year in ministry together. Happy anniversary! Friends, as we embark on our second year of ministry together here at the Cheshire United Methodist Church, I have been in prayerful reflection of the place we now find ourselves at. In celebration I sat with my calendar and envisioned the ways in which we could build meaningful community together as the beloved of Jesus Christ. I ask that you would join me in realizing, exploring, and experiencing the love of God, so that we may be able to share this love with one another, and the larger community of Cheshire each and every day. Festival of Trees 2016 (submitted by Dot Mattson)

We are looking for many people from the congregation to help in various areas. Please start thinking about where your interests lie and where your talents could best help make this year’s Festival of Trees a great success. The areas in which we need help include but are not limited to the following:

Set-up and clean-up on the day of

Trees: Please contact Dawn Deganis if interested in working on the trees. Dawn will also be in charge of a chocolate making day. We will be placing these chocolates in little candy dishes to be sold.

Vendors: If you know of someone who might be interested in purchasing a space at the festival, please contact Janet Ray. Cost of the space is $30, let’s fill all 10 spaces!

Soup/Salad Lunch & Desserts: Leean Spaulding will be running this portion of the day and will need some assistance.

Baskets: There will be several varieties of baskets placed among the trees at auction. Monetary donations are needed to cover the expense of the baskets as to not subtract from our profits. Please make checks payable to CUMC with Baskets in the memo line. There will be eight baskets in total ranging between $50 and $100. Baskets will be put together at a later date. See Dot Mattson if interested in helping with this project.

Cookies: Start thinking about your amazing cookie recipes! Sue Trumbo is arranging the cookie walk and will be reaching out in the near future.

The profit from this project will be used to help offset our general funds. Therefore, we ask that all participate so that we all benefit. -Thank you, Dot Mattson, Coordinator of Festival of Trees

All money raised will go to the Alzheimer's Association to aide in care, support, and research, with the hope for an eventual cure. For more information, go to: www.alz.org/ct. What "CAN" you do to help? Save your returnable cans and bottles (rinsed to deter pests, please) and bring them to the church Sunday, September 4th through Sunday, September 18th. There will be receptacles in the breezeway for your donations. Thank you for your help; I will note that the donation comes from CUMC. Jennifer Roeder

Everyone Has a Story – Syd Parker (submitted by Carolyn Kelly)

(Note from Carolyn Kelly to the church office: Your email regarding Syd reminded me of the article that was in the Courier a couple of years ago. He and I talked about his life and I learned some remarkable things about this faithful man of God. Submitted by Carolyn Kelly) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------

Sydney Parker was born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn, NY 90 years ago. While attending City College of NY, World War ll broke out and he ended up in the Army’s 94th Infantry Division, 4th company of the Medical Battalion in Italy. He and his fellow soldiers were responsible for caring for thousands of the sick, wounded, and deceased.

At the same time Syd’s future wife, Lottie, was warned by a Christian teacher in Vienna that Hitler was killing Jews and it was urgent to get out of Austria. Lottie left on her own, worked her way to England and eventually to the USA. After Syd had graduated from college he entered into work at the Board of Mission to Jews in NYC. Lottie came into the station one day while Syd was there. Syd popped the question one day after they had walked all over NYC! They married and had three beautiful daughters.

You may be wondering how Syd became a Methodist minister and that would be a good question. One day he noticed a man on the street being harassed while handing out booklets. Syd took a booklet and read it. It was the Gospel of Matthew and Syd didn’t know what that was. But as he read, he realized he was reading the genealogy of Jesus Christ and that all of those mentioned were Jewish people. He also read Ephesians which he found life-changing. He enrolled in the Eastern Baptist Seminary in PA and was ordained in NYC. There were no Baptist churches available but the Methodist church needed pastors. Lottie and Syd decided together to accept the call to pastor two Methodist churches in NY which they found rewarding and delightful.

Syd sums up his life this way…It is remarkable how God is faithful and full of grace. He loves all human Mbeings. In the first chapter of John it says that God is Love (Syd quoted it to me in Greek). By God’s grace we are loved in spite of our shortcomings. Syd thanks the Lord every day and still depends on God. I think we should thank God every day for placing a dynamic Christian like Syd in our midst! Editor’s Note: Rev. Sydney Leonard Parker: June 16, 1923- August 10, 2016. He will be missed by those who

knew him here at CUMC.
