I have often wondered if the Christ UMC worshipers could even begin to realize the impact that the church has on Dixon Elementary School, a small public school in south Mobile County. Over the past 4 years, the rewards of the various efforts and projects for the students, their families and the community as a whole have been, not just in terms of things that they don’t have to buy or things that they can’t afford to buy, but are an open and honest witness to God’s love and compassion for all of His children. “It Starts with Us” was adopted as the slogan for the school system last year. The school system intended for parents to recognize the enormous role that they play in the school-life of their children. Parents are the first teachers of their children and their involvement is wanted and needed by the schools to insure the greatest academic success. It also starts with the faith community. Christ UMC has stepped up to model Christian love and to reach, grow and serve. At Dixon, you have reached out to children and, through the children, have touched countless others. Your commitment to show the love of Jesus through personal connections and interest in the school continues to grow. And you have truly served our Father by serving “the least of these.” Last year, when the school supplies were delivered, we saw many emotions among the faculty members. The new teachers exhibited surprise and disbelief. The returning teachers ranged from awe—that you were still providing a visible and outward sign of continued giving to our children and faculty members—to tears of gratitude from these dedicated professionals who would not have to dig into their own pockets for the basic school supplies for that new child who walks into the classroom door without even a pencil. (They will still dig into their pockets but not for the basics!) We, at Dixon, are truly blessed with unbelievable support from Christ UMC and we have made it our goal to teach our scholars the importance of service to others, plus the value of giving. We will open even more doors for our children to give back and, yes, even to serve the church. During the 2014-15 school year, we will build on the idea of giving and serving by implementing student training called “The Leader in Me.” A kid-sized offshoot of Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, “The Leader in Me” will offer every child the opportunity to become more responsible, to show initiative, to develop creativity, to set and meet goals, to get along with people of various backgrounds, to resolve conflicts and to solve problems. We will always have increased student achievement as a goal, but we will also pursue the greater goal of helping the children to realize their full potential. We expect training in “The Leader in Me” to bring greater academic achievement as students begin to understand that each child has something that makes them special, that sets them apart, that gives them reason for hope. There are no words to adequately thank you for reaching out to us, growing with us and serving our scholars and their families. We ask God’s continued blessings on ALL the people of Christ United Methodist Church as we work together to further a meaningful experience for you and for our students! 251.342.0462 | AUGUST 2014 WORSHIP SERVICES It Starts with Us.......................................front Note from Pastor Jeff and Jim...................2 Homecoming Schedule..........................3 Summer Gathering....................................4 Adult Ministry..............................................5 Youth Ministry.............................................6 Children’s Ministry......................................7 Recreation Ministry...................................8 Various Ministries................................9 -12 Pastoral Care...........................................13 Weekly Events/Library.............................14 Calendar............................................ 15-16 IN THIS ISSUE Christ United Methodist Church christumcmobile.com IT STARTS WITH US!

And you have truly served our Father by serving “the least of these.”

Last year, when the school supplies were delivered, we saw many emotions among the faculty members. The new teachers exhibited surprise and disbelief. The returning teachers ranged from awe—that you were still providing a visible and outward sign of continued giving to our children and faculty members—to tears of gratitude from these dedicated professionals who would not have to dig into their own pockets for the

basic school supplies for that new child who walks into the classroom door without even a pencil. (They will still dig into their pockets but not for the basics!)

We, at Dixon, are truly blessed with unbelievable support from Christ UMC and we have made it our goal to teach our scholars the importance of service to others, plus the value of giving.

Now that my youngest son is finally leaving the nest, I am going to tackle the topic of the toughest job on earth: parenting. With all my great parenting experience, I can sum up parenting in three basic words: Pray like crazy! Parenting isn’t easy! It is not for cowards and there are NO easy answers and simple equations to make great families! Quite frankly, when it comes to being a parent, one size does not fit all. I get frustrated when I hear of some magical formula that makes the task seem easy.

Parenting is not easy and that is why we need to talk about it. When it comes to parenting, we need help! We need God’s help and we need the community of faith’s help. August 17th, we are kicking off our parenting series. Each week, we will have small group study materials to go along with that week’s sermon topic.

Make plans to join us and to join a small group as we tackle The Toughest Job on Earth. The natural question some of you may have is, “Why would I come to this series if I’m not a parent?”

“As a young person without children, I must say that I’m still excited about this series. Jim and I have worked hard to make sure that all of the sermons and small group discussions are beneficial even if you’re not raising children. Each week, we’ll have the opportunity to look at how our lives have been influenced by our parents, as well as how to pray for our friends and family who are currently parents.” - Courtney Foote, NewSong Worship Leader

So even if you don’t have children, join us in NewSong as we uncover all of the ways our parents influenced us and how we can move forward with confidence as children of God!

In Christ,

Jim Kinder

Greetings in the name of Jesus, I am blessed to be beginning my first formal day as the High School Minister here at Christ UMC. However, this isn’t the first day that I have felt a connection to this church. As one of the youth ministers at Lynn Haven UMC for 7 years, I have had many opportunities to partner with Jeremy Steele and Bill McLarty for youth events and retreats. I have

already had many interactions with your students. They have done valuable mission work in the Panama City community and have close friendships with former students of mine at Lynn Haven UMC. My wife Kathryn and I have been

privileged to pray with and minister to your students in the past and it seems surreal to us to have such an incredible opportunity to minister to them as a part of the Christ UMC ministry team.

We have a beautiful three-year-old girl named Jayna and another little girl named Elsie who will be born in three short weeks. Kathryn and I are grateful to the Lord and to your church for giving us the chance to help lead students in this area to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. We want to thank each of you who have already welcomed us into the Christ UMC family. Fly with Christ, Tyler Vittetoe

Reset Their Internal Clock By Jon Seale, Elementary PastorAs a parent, what’s in the back of your head as your children return to school? For a kid, going from a lazy summer where the only thing they have on the schedule is a pool party to having to get up at dawn, look somewhat human and listen to teachers all day is a little bit of a shock. The more active you are in supporting your children during the school year, the greater are their chances of success. There are ways you can make things go a little smoother for them.

Reset their internal clock. I did it growing up, you did it, my kids do it and your kids do it too. It is summer time—they stay up late playing in the yard catching fire flies and then sleep in. Ease into the back-to-school schedule and put a spin on it, because going to bed should never be seen as punishment. Your child has to understand sleep is good for them, just like exercise is. We tell Junior he has to recharge his batteries just like he recharges his Xbox controller batteries. If your child is a gamer, you know what it means for the batteries to lose their power in the middle of a game. It just works better when the batteries are fully charged.

You cannot expect a child that has been staying up until eleven to go to bed at nine all at once. They will just get frustrated and lie awake. Instead of shifting the bed time first, start shifting the wake up time. Start waking your children at the time they will need to get up for school so they will tire earlier at night. It is easier to get a sleepy kid to bed than and an anxious one.

Make sure getting up is worth it. For a few days before school starts try this: when you turn on the lights, open the shades, throw back the covers, singing the good morning song, let your kid play a video game or watch TV first thing in the morning. It may sound crazy but think about it. Waking up is biological, getting up is a choice. By the start of school, their body will be in the habit of getting up earlier.

As your child resettles into the school routine, take some time for yourself to reflect on your values about education and how you can more intentionally support your child.

August Dates

As a general rule, if your workouts last longer than an hour, you’re not training with enough intensity. 60 minutes is enough time for your warm-up, cardio, strength training (including core work) and flexibility. If you’re unable to get all this done in an hour, reduce the rest time between each exercise and cut out exercises of less importance. For example, you could spend an entire hour just stretching, but there are only a few stretches that you really need to do. Spend the majority of time in the area that best suits your goal for training.

If you want to lose weight, spend more time on cardio training. If you want to tone up, spend the majority of your time working with weights. Cross-training workouts generally give the best overall results. This means combine all the components. For example, perform a circuit where you do an exercise for strength, followed by an abdominal exercise, followed by a two minute burst of cardio. If you take minimal rest between each component, your heart rate will stay elevated for the rest of entire workout.

$963,000thru July

2nd Mile updateBy Rob Blackwell, Church Administrator

The goal of the Seven Year Plan is to eliminate $7 million of debt in 7 years, thereby giving us the resources and flexibility to more freely and effectively answer God’s call on our church. Remember, the core components are:

n Intentional Emphasis on Spiritual Development and Tithingn Incorporating the Mortgage Payment in General Operating (GO)n 2nd Mile Sundaysn Planned Givingn Capital Campaigns As we approach the end of summer and people are returning from vacation, preparing for school, etc., keep the first component in mind: that of the tithe. Tithing not only supports the mission and ministry of the church: more importantly, it fulfills a spiritual need for each of us to obey God’s call and to recognize and celebrate the fact that we are richly blessed and desire to give back to Him with thankful hearts. In John Wesley ‘s view, the tithe, traditionally established at 10%, is the beginning point of giving for all followers of Christ. If you are committed to tithe, we encourage you to give that 10% to the General Operating fund, which supports the ministries and operations of the church. If you are then able to give above a tithe, please prayerfully consider giving that additional offering to the Seven Year Fund. If you are not ready to make tithing your beginning point, prayerfully consider what percentage is a good starting point, and start now; then make a plan to move to 10% in the next 2-3 years. For more detailed information, visit the Christ UMC Information Desk or go to christumcmobile.com/seven.

Lifegate Ministry is a vital outreach of Christ UMC, serving the church membership and the local community since 1989. Lifegate’s purpose is to aid persons in crisis situations brought about by illness, job loss, family or financial distress. Priority is given to our church members, the elderly and/or disabled in our community.

All these situations also have a spiritual need. Lifegate meets for prayer before meeting with clients and prayer is given with all the clients in the meeting room. Individual prayer for the clients is given by one of our Prayer Team members when it is requested.

Lifegate is not part of the church budget. Funds are received from the offerings left at the Sanctuary altar rail on Communion Sundays and from special gifts designated by church members and friends. Each year, more than $80,000 is received. along with food donations from 5th Sunday Food Drives. Without these donations, Lifegate can not operate effectively. Lifegate assists over 900 families annually!

Thank you for your continued support of this ministry through your prayers, service and gifts.

You will want to be part of this fifth Sunday food drive for several reasons. This is the last regular fifth Sunday of 2014. Let’s make sure the pantry is overflowing. And, this August is an unusual one. It is not only a fifth Sunday, but a fifth Friday and a fifth Saturday. The next time this will occur is more than 800 years away. So, be part of this once in a lifetime August and pick up your pantry list and bag on Sundays, August 17 or 24. What a great way to celebrate a long weekend of fifths! Thank you for your faithfulness to Lifegate.

“And He will answer, ‘I assure you, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’” Matt. 25:45 (NLT)
