the only place i’ll

ever call home.

In the 19th century, Cupertino was a small rural village at the crossroads of Stevens Creek Road and Saratoga-Mountain View Road. The primary economic activity was fruit agricul-ture. Almost all of the land within Cupertino’s present-day boundaries was covered by prune, plum, apricot, and cherry orchards. Soon railroads, electric railways, and dirt roads traversed the West Side farmlands. Monta Vista, Cupertino’s first housing tract, was developed in the mid-20th century as a result of the electric railway’s construction.

After World War II, a population boom dramatically shifted the demographics and economy of the Santa Clara Valley; the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” was beginning to transform into “Silicon Valley”. In 1954, Cupertino leaders began to drive for incorporation as they were concerned about unplanned development and rising property taxes. In the election on September 27, 1955, voters approved the incorporation of the City of Cupertino. Cupertino officially became Santa Clara County’s 13th City on October 10, 1955.

Yoshio Yamamoto, as Mayor of Toyokawa, Japan had a dream. Looking back at the ruin and devastation as a result of World War II, Mayor Yamamoto began seeking a way to establish a peaceful future of international understanding between Japan and the rest of the world. His dream came to fruition with the signing of a Sister City relationshipbetween Toyokawa, Japan and Cupertino, California in 1978. Key to Mayor Yamamoto’s vision would be the education of generations to come and thus the idea for a student exchange program was conceived. In 1979 the first annual student delegation of six middle school students from Toyokawa visited Cupertino. The first delegation of eight Cupertino middle school students visited Toyokawa in 1983. Over the years, the program has continued and expanded.

Memorial Park is currently the home of 200 cherry trees gifted to Cupertino by Toyokawa in 1983 commemorating the fifth anniversary of the sister city relationship. As the cherry trees in Memorial Park have flourished and grown over the years, so have the bonds between Cupertino and Toyokawa and their citizens.
