President’s Message

Rick Daniels has been actively researching the concept of Aging in Place with thepossibility of incorporating some aspects ofthe program into LLI/NOVA member

activities. I was unaware of the number of Aging inPlace programs that exist in our area. TheWashington Area Village Exchange (WAVE)identifies more than 50 organized Village and AtHome programs in neighborhoods across the region. The WAVE web site describes their mission asfollows:

WAVE envisions a world/region where anyone cangrow older living in his/her own community, knowing neighbors, having the opportunity to be anactive contributor to that community, and gettingsupport from neighbors, friends and communityorganizations.

After meeting with the Lake Barcroft Villagefounder and current administrator, Rick and I havegained insight on how a volunteer based Villageprogram works. Lake Barcroft is a well-definedcommunity, which LLI/NOVA is not; however, there are Hub-and-Spoke options that exist in someareas. I understand that our Curriculum Committeehas offered classes on Aging in Place and the Villageconcept in past years, which have been wellreceived. I would like to gauge the level of LLImember interest before any future planning ofAging in Place activities are considered. Rick hasdeveloped a short statement which explainsactivities we could consider providing withinterested volunteers. I encourage you to completethe survey enclosed in this newsletter.

Scott Pinckney, LLI President

Thoughts for April Fools’ Day

William Shakespeare famously said,“Better a witty fool than a foolish wit.”On April Fools’ Day, showcase your witand humor with these quotes. If you are

a prankster, play a harmless prank, and tease yourfriends. If you are not a prankster, beware of thosewho are. You will need loads of it on April Fools’Day.

Mark Twain, Pudd’nhead Wilson — April 1. This isthe day upon which we are reminded of what weare on the other three-hundred and sixty-four.

George Orwell — The aim of a joke is not todegrade the human being, but to remind him that he is already degraded.

Thomas Shadwell — The haste of a fool is theslowest thing in the world.

Arabian Proverb — A fool may be known by sixthings: anger without cause; speech without profit;change without progress; inquiry without object;putting trust in a stranger; and mistaking foes forfriends.

Horace — Mix a little foolishness with yourprudence: It’s good to be silly at the right moment.

Cancellations Due toInclement Weather

If the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) cancelschool for the day due to inclement weather or other emergency, all LLI classes, Forums, and otheractivities, except trips, are cancelled regardless ofclass location. LLI morning classes are cancelled ifthe FCPS announces a 2-hour delay in classopenings; LLI afternoon classes are cancelled if theFCPS announces early dismissal.

Introducing LLI —Aging in Place

Sooner or later when we enter our sixties, webegin thinking about where we want to live.We ask ourselves: How will I care for myspouse? For myself? For my home? For my

pet? With the thought in mind that, “There’s noplace like home,” we ask, what should I do? Whatare my options?

LLI is considering forming a group to help LLImembers resolve these questions with our primaryfocus on Aging in Place. This group will be limited toproviding a list of professional services andbusinesses that can assist the needs of our agingmembers. It is our intent to provide references so each member can individually contract with the vendorthey choose. The compilation of vendor services willinclude a description of the services and, wherepossible, LLI member evaluation of the vendor.

Today, in the Washington metropolitan area thereare 50 Aging in Place Villages which are active orunder development. They are generally restricted toa community, so our effort will be geographicallymuch larger. Many of these Villages includevolunteer members who assist other members withtheir needs. If there is interest, we may also add LLIvolunteer members to the list of service providers inthe future.

The services we feel are important to aging in placeinclude:

ã Activities — Social, intellectual and physical. We believe the most important aspect of aging iskeeping an active body and mind whilemaintaining a healthy social interaction.Coincidentally, this is the charter of LLI and thisservice is available with the membership.

ã Transportation

ã Home maintenance – exterior and interior

ã Home downsizing, modification and relocation

ã Food acquisition and preparation

ã Health care professionals

ã Financial and legal advice

Included in this newsletter (see page 8) is a surveyto assess the interest of LLI members in an Aging inPlace effort from helping to organize and plan, needing the service or helping to provide theservices. If interested, please take the time torespond to the survey and mail it to LLI or bring it to the next forum meeting.
