Short biography
Dr. André Pina concluded his M.Sc. in Technological Physics Engineering in 2007 and
his Ph.D. in Sustainable Energy Systems within the MIT Portugal Program in 2012 from
Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal.
As a postdoctoral researcher, his main research topics are the development of modelling
methodologies to include supply and demand dynamics in the modeling of energy
systems, the quantification of the potential for energy efficiency and local energy
production at the urban scale and the assessment of material use and resource productivity
at the National and urban scales.
He has been part of projects involving the assessment of transitions in energy systems
towards the high penetration of renewable energy sources, with particular reference to the
Green Islands Project in cooperation with MIT, and on the quantification and design of
roadmaps for urban areas, namely for European and Asian cities with European
Municipalities and the Asian Development Bank, respectively.
Despite being a young researcher, André has shown his high potential and capacities. On
the scientific component, he has published 20 peer-reviewed papers in international
journals, along with 21 conference papers. He has also participated in 8 competitive
scientific projects. Currently, he is the scientific coordinator of the participation of IST in 1
international project and 1 national project On the teaching component, André has
successfully supervised 16 M.Sc. and 2 Ph.D. students and taught in 3 undergraduate, 3
M.Sc. and 2 Ph.D. level courses. Currently, he is supervising 3 Ph.D. students and 5 M.Sc.
students. Regarding knowledge transfer, he has engaged with a wide range of
stakeholders, including business and industry stakeholders, through 4 services projects
and 4 industrial consultancy projects. As for management activities, André is a member
of the Board of Directors of the IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy
Research since 2013, has participated in 18 examination boards, and participated in the
organization of 4 scientific events. Table 1 summarizes the main indicators regarding
André’s activities.

Main activities and responsibilities: The main research interests focus on assessing the energy
and material metabolism of economies at different scales. In what concerns energy, the main
research efforts have been related to the improvement of existing modeling methodologies. The
goal is to enable them to account for the variability of renewable resources and the introduction
of load shifting and demand response technologies, including electric vehicles, in the design of
transitions in energy systems. Regarding the material use in countries and urban areas, the
research has been devoted to develop new methodologies to quantify the use of materials and the
resource productivity of economies, using Input-Output and Material Flow Analysis methods.
Recently, new research efforts have been developed to apply several of the methods developed at
the previously mentioned scales to the neighborhood scale, combining them with building
simulation modeling approaches.
