patients, so we should be careful. The trainees will become familiar with the different information

providers as well as the type of contents they can find online. They will learn how to identify the

sponsor of a website, its purpose and how they can protect their personal information. This module

will also provide some tips to check if the source of information is credible and up to date, as well as

how to avoid the confirmation bias – “we should be open to the “strangeness” of new information

that goes against our beliefs, in order to avoid the confirmation bias”. In the last part of this module,

some dangers of “trying without medication” will be presented, besides some tips on how to better

cooperate with the doctor by for example, sharing the patient’s point of view, choosing a

relationship style, and preparing for appointments. The module ends with the benefits of health

knowledge and how to get the best of it.

way to build or maintain a social network that can support you with health problems.

The module provides also some important information regarding physical and mental health

promotion. More specifically, physical well-being in older adults is associated mainly with healthy

eating and nutrition, physical activity, vaccinations, quitting smoking and prevention of accidents and

falls. Psychosocial wellbeing is also important among older adults, since 20% of adults over 60 years

old suffer from a mental health issue. Mental health may also influence or be influenced by physical

health. The most common mental health issues in older adults are dementia, depression and stress.

This module includes some useful tips on how to manage stress and depression as an older adult and

Content:

The purpose of this module is to enable senior citizens to learn and make use of the vast potentials

which the Internet provides also in the health and care sector and to become “digital smart

patients”. The Internet is the main source of information for citizens when it comes to health issues.

However, not all information that one can find on the Internet is reliable. The first unit of this

module explains how one can find out whether a website is reliable and provide tools that will help

to evaluate the, and to avoid pitfalls.

The reader will receive practical tips and checklists how to prepare for a consultation with a doctor,

what to do during the appointment and what one can do afterwards.

The second unit deals with age-related disorders. Examples are atherosclerosis and cardiovascular

disease, hypertension, arthritis and osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. The

incidence of all of these diseases increases exponentially with age. The reader will receive easy-to-

understand information about these disorders.

In the third unit, we deal with a theme which is often neglected when it comes to elderly persons. Family

members are frequently confronted with health care issues concerning their elderly relatives, e.g. spouse or

parents. Their responsibility as family caregivers is often challenged not only by the daily burden of care, but

also by behavioural disorders of the person they care for. This happens often, especially if this person suffers

from dementia. The unit lists the most common “bad” be-haviours and tips for coping with them.

The fourth unit informs the reader where to find information about Internet resources for age-related

disorders. The various language versions of iHeal course provide language-specific information.
