 A curriculum vitae of Professor TRAN VAN THO (as of April 1, 2006)  Born in Vietnam Vietnamese nationality, permanent resident in Japan Current positions: Professor of Economics, Waseda University (Tokyo) Chairman, Vietnam Asia-Pacific Economic Center (VAPEC), Hanoi Professor Tran Van Tho, born in Vietnam, came to Japan in 1968 on a Japanese government scholarship. He graduated from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo in 1973 and received his Ph.D (Doctor of Economics) in 1993 from the same university. He is currently a professor of economics at the School of Social Sciences of Waseda University. His former positions include Senior Economist at the Japan Center for Economic Research (Tokyo), Professor of Economics at Obirin University (Tokyo), Visiting Professor at Hanoi National University, and Visiting Professor at National University of Ho Chi Minh City, and University of Danang. Besides academic and educational activities, Professor Tran Van Tho has  been actively involved in consultations to both the Vietnamese and Japanese governments. He has served many years as a specialist member on the Economic Council of Japan, an advisory organ of the Japanese Prime Minister, as an advisor to a number of Japanese government-related agencies such as the Research Institute of International Investment and Development of the Japan Export Import Bank of Japan, and the Research Institute of Finance and Development of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). Since 1998, Professor Tran Van Tho became a member of the Policy Council of the Japan Forum on International Relations, a policy-oriented research organization, and served as the leader of the task force for the 19 th  Policy Recommendation of the Policy Council (with the topic  Economic Globalization and Options for Asia) of this Forum. This Policy Recommendation was presented to Prime Minister Mori Yoshiro in May 2000. In Vietnam, Professor Tran Van Tho served as a member in the Advisory Group on Economic and Administrative Reforms of Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet (1993-1997) and currently collaborating with the Policy Research Group of Prime Minister Phan Van Khai. In education, he has served as Visiting Professor at the Hanoi National University, National University at Ho Chi Minh City, and University of Danang. In 1991, he initiated the idea for the Hanoi-based Vietnam Asia-Pacific Economic Center (VAPEC) and raised funds in Japan to materialize this idea. In 1993, VAPEC was set up in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City and later (1995) in Danang. A main founder of VAPEC, Professor Tran Van Tho is currently the Chairman of this institution.

  • Professor Tran Van Tho has written extensively on the economic development of Japan, Vietnam and other Asian countries, and on the economic relations between Japan and Asian countries. Major books he has published include:

    1.Industrial Development and Multinational Corporations: The Dynamics of Asian Pacific Region, Toyou Keizai Shinposha, 1992 (in Japanese). (The book received the Asia Pacific Prize in 1993)

    2.Development of the Vietnamese Economy, Nihon Keizai Shinbun, 1996 (in Japanese).

    3. Vietnamese Industrialization in the Era of Asia and the Pacific, Saigon Times, VAPEC and Ho Chi Minh Publishers, 1997 (in Vietnamese).

    4. Asian Economy and Japan (joint publication with Harada Yutaka and C. H. Kwan), Nihon Hyoronsha, 2001 (in Japanese).

    In addition, Professor Tran Van Tho also served as editor of several books in English, Vietnamese and Japanese.

    Professor Tran Van Tho has also published articles and has been

    interviewed in widely circulated journals and newspapers in Vietnamese, Japanese, and English. He is currently a regular columnist and contributor to influential journals in Vietnam such as Thoi bao kinh te Saigon, Tuoi Tre, Thanh Nien and Tia Sang. Regarding papers in English, his article on Look East was published in the April 1995 issue of Look Japan. He also served as a columnist for the Nikkei Weeky from 1995 to 1996. Among his most recent articles written in English, one appeared in the Japan Times on July 14, 2000 which discussed the Asian Monetary Fund (AMF) and other issues on the stabilization of the Asian economy, another entitled AFTA in the Dynamic Perspective of Asian Trade: Towards a Closer Cooperation among ASEAN+3 Countries, published in The Journal of the Korean Economy, Vol. 3, No. 1 (Spring 2002), and the most recent paper entitled The Pattern of Trade Specialization and Economic Integration in East Asia: Problems of Late Comers, written for The International Collaboration Projects 2005 of the Economic and Social Research Institute of the Japanese Government (March 2006). .
