CVCC Exploration Visits The month of November began the 10 th grade Exploration visits to CVCC! Each group of 10 th graders from all eight of CVCC’s associate districts had an individual tour guide who provided information on each program. Some programs had students speak to the groups as well as had displays out for the groups to see. There will be more 10 th grade, as well as 8 th grade, Exploration Visits throughout the coming weeks. Thank you to the entire CVCC staff for helping with these visits, specifically CVCC’s Admissions Counselor Kelli Buccini and the Career and Community Resources staff. Industry Interviews On Friday, November 22, CVCC students did a great job with the Industry Interview Project, in which they interviewed professionals in their chosen field. 92 students traveled to 50 businesses, of which 25 were located in CVCC’s associate school district communities. The goal of the Industry Interview project is to broaden student knowledge of current hiring practices and trends in their program area. The following 11 programs participated: Architecture & Mechanical Design, Auto Body Repair & Refinishing, Auto Service Technology, Construction Trades, Digital Design, Electrical Systems, Graphic Imaging Technology, Heating & Air Conditioning, Media Arts, Power Equipment Technology, and Programming & Software Development. Many successful and well-known businesses and organizations participated including Avantia Inc., Brecksville Road Transit, Broadview Heating, Cleveland Metroparks, Community Focus, JADCO Construction Services, Novex Systems LLC, Tim Lally Chevrolet, U.S. Communications & Electric Inc., Village Auto Body, and Welker McKee. experience were outstanding; several mentioned that they hoped their student would apply for work at their business! Thanks to all who put in time and effort to make the event a success, especially Maria Gammiere, CVCC’s new Job Placement Administrative Assistant, Sandra Leech, CVCC’s Career and Community Resources Administrative Assistant who developed the systems for the event over the past decade and shared her knowledge, as well as CVCC’s Career ad Community Resources Specialist, Martha Sluka.

Mock Interview Day At CHHS On November 22, juniors from Cuyahoga Heights High School participated in the Annual Mock Interview Event. Local business professionals participated by interviewing multiple students to help facilitate an opportunity for students to experience a real-life job interview situation. A special thank you to industry professionals from Nook Industries, Dupont, 4-H, Mazzella Lifting Technologies, ADP, City of Cleveland, and Cuyahoga Heights Board Members. We are thankful for the partnership opportunity and the connections created for our students. The Mock Interview Event is coordinated by Randi Borosh, CVCC Career Specialist to the Cuyahoga Heights and Independence Local School Districts.

Lunch and Learn at IMS CVCC Career Specialist, Randi Borosh and Independence Middle School teacher, Michelle Koussa launched a new Lunch and Learn program in the Media Innovation Center at IMS last week. Each week students in grades 5-8 are given an opportunity to listen and interact with a demonstration or project highlighting a career path. This past week, students had the pleasure of hearing guest speaker Michelle Brown who is the Deputy Dog Warden of the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter, along with her assistant Amanda, and the show stealer, Basil. We look forward to the partnership of community members to provide an educational as well as informative opportunity to students.

CVCC Dental Assisting Students Give Back at Medworks Event On Friday, November 22, CVCC’s Dental Assisting students, instructed by Lisa Theodore, attended the Medworks Dental Clinic, where they volunteered to help provide free dental care to the community. Dental professionals and community volunteers were there as well to provide free dental care to patients of all ages. Services included dental screenings, cleanings, extractions, fillings,

restorative care, and temporary partials for adults, as well as sealants for children. CVCC was the only career and technical school with high school students assisting those in need. This was the dental programs second year participating and they plan to participate again next year. Jayla Carothers, a senior in the Dental Assisting program was an interpreter for a Spanish-speaking mom and daughter relaying information on what treatment was needed to be done and why. It was amazing to see the interactions of students not only using their skills, but also the compassion and empathy they gave to the patients. The high school Dental Assisting program thanks CVCC administration for giving them the opportunity to participate. What a fantastic event to take part in as well as give back to help others! The Cleveland Metro Parks Visits Albion Elementary School On November 21, the second grade class of Amanda McClain at Albion Elementary School had the opportunity to learn about Native American Indians. Karen Lakus, from the Cleveland Metro Parks, came to speak to the second graders about the history of Native American Indians. She talked to the students about culture, religion, customs and language. She also described how they survived with farming and making their own tools and weapons. The students had the opportunity to hold many of the native artifacts. Mrs. Lakus also said, "We can learn from traditions and stories that have been passed down within the tribes from generation to generation." What a great lesson to have around the holiday season. Thank you to Jill Larson, CVCC Career Specialist of the North Royalton School District, who coordinated the event. CVCC Students Attend Opening SkillsUSA Meeting On Thursday, November 14, eight CVCC students attended the opening session for the SKillsUSA Leadership Conference in Columbus, OH. SkillsUSA is a national organization of students involved in trade and industrial education. The organization helps students explore occupations through skills competitions and visits to industries, while helping them understand the responsibilities of skilled workers. SkillsUSA promotes solid trade ethics and safety standards while fostering understanding of labor and management. Students develop their leadership abilities as they are establishing realistic career goals. Students in the following programs are eligible for membership: Architectural & Mechanical Design, Auto Body Repair, Auto Service Technology, Building & Property Maintenance, Construction Trades, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Digital Design, Electrical Systems, Engineering Technology, Fire & EMS Academy, Graphic Imaging Technology, Heating & Air Conditioning, Machine Technology, Media Arts, and Power Equipment Technology. Students participate at the national, state, and regional levels to develop leadership and job-ready skills. What an incredible organization to take part in!

Rotary Students of the Month Congratulations to CVCC Architectural and Mechanical Design student, Logan Ward! Logan is a junior from Nordonia High School and was honored as the October Nordonia Rotary Student of the Month.

Also, congratulations to CVCC Health Careers student, Kaitlynn Barnett! Kaitlynn is a senior from Nordonia High School and was honored as the November Nordonia Rotary Student of the Month.

Garfield Heights Glass Ceiling Leadership Event On November 20, students in the Glass Ceiling Women's Leadership Group at Garfield Heights High School, led by Julie Regula, CVCC Career Specialist in the Garfield Heights City School District had the pleasure of hearing motivational speaker, author, and entrepreneur, Lisa Ryan. Lisa has more than 20 years of experience in marketing, training, and sales. She is President and Founder of Grategy, a Cleveland based firm specializing in using gratitude strategies, known as Grategies, for personal and professional development. Ms. Ryan is an award winning speaker and best-selling author of ten books. She has also appeared in two “Chicken Soup for the Soul” films. What a great opportunity to take part in!

Career Day in the Revere School District On Thursday, November 7, 170 first grade students at Richfield Elementary School in the Revere Local School District had the opportunity to hear about careers from several first grade parents: Suhanya Aravamudhan, Corporate Trainer at Nestles; John Valle, CPA; Joe Scott, Audio Engineer and Musician; Indira Jakob, Pharmacist; and Dr. Kate Brackney, Emergency Room Veterinarian (pictured). The students enjoyed moving from class to class to hear the exciting details of each career. Thank you to all the parents for participating in such a worthwhile experience. The Career Day event is coordinated by Kathy Dombrowski, CVCC Career Specialist in the Revere Local School District.

Christmas Craft Show On Saturday, November 9, CVCC hosted the annual Christmas Craft Show featuring more than 75 crafters and creative vendors offering unique gifts and items. Almost 1,000 people attended the craft show. Thank you to all those who participated in and attended the Christmas Craft Show, a very special thank you to CVCC's Dental Assisting program with instructor Lisa Theodore who facilitated this event!

Twinsburg’s Dodge Intermediate School Career Fair On November 8, Twinsburg’s Dodge Intermediate School held their Annual Career Day. The day was spent with students rotating through a variety of speakers who shared their careers and experiences. Students were able to participate in interactive programs as well as hear speakers discuss their career paths and the exciting things about their roles. CVCC Career Specialist who works alongside the Twinsburg City Schools, Toni Cluse, connected with industry contacts to secure several speakers. Some of the careers represented include: Physical Therapist, Bankers, Culinary Services, SWAT, Information Security, Nurse Practitioner, Architect, Insurance Agent, Artist, Engineer, Video Gamer, and a Cosmologist.

Business Professionals Help GHHS Seniors Sharpen Their Interviewing Skills Garfield Heights High School students participated in the 5th Annual Mock Interview Day this past month. This event was the culmination of their interviewing unit, in which the students learned all aspects of a successful interview. Business professionals from the community volunteered their time and expertise to assist over 100 students sharpen their interviewing skills. Julie Regula, CVCC Career Specialist, who co-organized the event, stated that, "Through this process, the students not only received positive feedback but also valuable constructive criticism that is often missing in the interview process." Veteran’s Day Presentation On Monday, November 11, CVCC held its annual Veteran’s Day Presentation. Thank you to all those who took part in and facilitated the Veteran's Day Presentation. The entire CVCC community sends a very special thank you to all those who have served for our country!

CVCC NTHS Halloween Costume Contest On Thursday, October 31, CVCC’s National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) held its annual Halloween Costume Contest. NTHS received over $680 in donations that went to St. Jude’s and the Courtney Spencer Fund. Thank you to all those who helped facilitate this event and participated. The winners were …

Staff 1st – Diane Ellis – “Colonel Sanders” 2nd – Linda Buck & Joy Fejes – “Stewardesses of CVCC” 3rd – Kristin Brauer – “Veronica from Riverdale” Twinsburg City School District – Business Advisory Council (BAC) Meeting On October 29, Superintendent Kathi Powers held the October meeting of the Twinsburg BAC (Business Advisory Council) at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center. Twinsburg’s CVCC Career Specialist, Toni Cluse was invited to attend the meeting and present on how CVCC ties to the Twinsburg Community. Toni shared the CVCC story and took the group on a facility tour. Rich Parrott spoke to the group about his High School and Adult Education Machine Technology programs and provided an in-depth tour of the Machine Technology shop. CVCC is grateful for this partnership!

CVCC Staff Plank Challenge During the month of October, 17 CVCC staff members participated in a wellness planking challenge, 6 days a week with increasing plank duration throughout the month. For the final day of the challenge, staff members got together to plank for 3 minutes and 30 seconds as a group. What a great way to promote wellness and motivation in the workplace!

Adult Diploma Recipients Congratulations to CVCC’s Adult Education students, Eddie Edwards who recently obtained his High School Diploma through the Adult Diploma Program by completing the STNA program and passing the required examination. Also, congratulations to Adult Education student, Traniece Jackson who recently graduated from the STNA program as well, receiving her diploma from the Adult Diploma Program. Traniece also landed a job where she was hired on the spot due to her STNA license. What incredible hard work and success!
