Tracing the origins of the land now called Charlotte is like following an old game trail through ancient forest. e tracks, crushed turf and broken twigs are gone but an impression on the forest itself has been left. A shallow furrow, patches of exposed mud and a narrow line cut through the undergrowth visible only when directly on the trail then vanishing in the seeming chaos a pace to the left or right.

Charlotte was part of the hunting grounds of the Seneca Nation. e marsh and lowland woods near the great lake of Ontario provided game in abundance and sh populated the river and the fresh waters of what is but a part of the vast inland sea of the Great Lakes.

Perhaps the rst European to see the area was interpretor and explorer tienne Brl who mapped the Genesse River valley during his years spent living among the native peoples at the behest of renowned explorer and benefactor Samuel de Chmplain. Brl achieved notoriety after betraying Champlain and France to the English. e long time frontiersman met his death at the hands of his own adopted Huron people in 1643.

Charlottes future didnt rest in the hands of the French, and as England slowly conquered New France, a nascent United States started to ll the space formally occupied by purely European powers. In 1788, a mere year after the signing of the Constitution, the Mill Yard Tract was created. is parcel was purchased from the Senecas by New England businessmen Oliver Phelps and Nathanial Gorham. e lake shore portion of the parcel would grow into Charlotte. e beginning of the village was with a single hut. is modest structure was built on the west bank of the river by William Hincher and his son who were later joined by his wife and seven daughters. e village proper was laid out in 1792 by Colonel Robert Troup who created single acre lots of the now defunct Mill Yard Tract. Once divided, the whole area was named Charlotteburgh after his daughter. ese settlements preceded the founding of Rochester.

e early 1800s saw the growth of Charlotte as a port town in the vibrant trade network spreading through the Great Lakes. Frontier merchant, George Clinton Latta, ran a eet of sleek squared sailed schooners from Charlotte. is trade was seriously disrupted when war broke out in 1812. e threat of English naval raids coming from Canada was so severe shipping had to be diverted miles inland to Carthage Landing (near the Veterans Memorial Bridge). Several encounters occurred at or near Charlotte with Royal Navy forces actually landing in June 1813 to take supplies from the local people. Later eorts were met rst by the ships under Commodore Issac Chauncey and later the canons of local militia units.

e end of the war lead to a true owering of the lake trade and in 1820 no less than 316 ships visited the port. To accommodate the increased shipping, the rst light house for the port was built in 1821. However, the lake trade couldnt compete with the Erie Canal and later railroad lines.

e rebound and reinvention of Charlotte came after the Civil War. e schooners and heavy limbed sailors and dock workers of the previous era gave way to vacationers and excursion steamers as the port transitioned into a summer resort. Leaving behind the summer heat to enjoy the cool lake air, people ocked to the small port and the Genesee Yacht Club was hence established in 1874.

Over the years, Charlotte has embraced its new role oering a sandy beach front and bustling park along with several eateries near the lake. Rochesterians will nd local favorites like Italian food from Mr. Dominics On the Lake. Cheeburger Cheeburgers famed one pound burger beckons along with sushi from California Rollin II. Savory steaks, BBQ and seafood can be found at LDR Char Pit, Nolas BBQ and Pelicans Nest Restaurant respectively.

Finally, there is the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse. Dating from 1822, the 40-foot octagonal tower now stands as the last original lighthouse on Lake Ontario. e site now houses a museum and oers a commanding view of the Port of Rochester. e lighthouse serves as a direct link to Charlottes past while oering an enviable view of its present.

LDR CHAR PIT A taste from Above!

I grew up in Western New York just south of Rochester in the village of Geneseo. e big summer outing at least once a week was a trip to the local hamburger stand. e whole family would pile into the car and o we would go to our hamburger joint. ese summer trips created endless summer memories lled with laughter, familiar friends and faces, and of course good eats. Over the years many of these places have disappeared, but fortunately today there are still a few places around. One recent hot day last summer, my family & I decided to head up to Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte for some swimming. It would be an understatement to say we were delighted to nd LDR Char Pit in Charlotte. is is a neighborhood gem, a place for visiting old friends, exchange some neighborhood gossip and of course to enjoy some delicious summer eats.

Original owner, Russ, and his brother opened the LDR Char Pit in 1945 after they returned home from World II. Since then it has been a local favorite gathering place to enjoy a wide variety of food, and a place for friends and family to come together. Current owners, Lou and Steve, plan to keep the classic menu and add some new items while expanding the busy summer hours.

e LDR Char Pit is a classic all-American diner oering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A true jewel in the Rochester area for its wonderful service, varied menu, great values, down-home atmosphere and more. Dont miss a visit to LDR Char Pit. Breakfast served all-day at LDR cant be beat. Stop in for a Blue Plate or try one of the chef specials!

Windjammers bar and grill is located in the village of Charlotte, near the Ontario Beach Park and The Port of Rochester. Windjammers was started in 1978 by Lee Selover, and is a family-friendly restaurant with a fun staff. Its rockin every day of the week and is a locally owned neighborhood bar and grill.

Owner, Lee Selover, has been operating Windjammers since he was 24 years old and he has maintained his neighborly sense of belonging in his restaurant ever since. Selover isnt afraid to make his dreams come true, so at 24 years of age, he bought the old New Frontier restaurant and renamed it to Windjammers.

Lee changed a standard bar into a restaurant and place where people can come and enjoy themselves, knowing they are welcome. Over thirty six years in business shows the power of his determination in making his dream a reality. Selover concentrates on the needs and wants of his customers. If they havent had something on his menu then he comes over to them so that he can make sure that they receive samples of the foods to taste. Selovers goal is to get out and build relationships with his customers so that he can keep the atmosphere at Windjammers jammin, with a full blast of energy beyond what is possible at other bar and grills.

Customers say that the number one reason they love Windjammers is that they can come in and always see a friendly, familiar face. Some customers have been coming to the bar and grill since its inception. The laid-back staff is always ready with a smile and a good dose of humor welcomes everyone.

The second reason bringing customers back is the great food. All of their recipes are tried and true from family members and friends. Everything is made from scratch, including their 15 varieties of wings. At Windjammers, they feel that the customer is their audience and often ask the customers if theyd like to see something new on the menu. The burgers are fantastic as well and they are served from 2pm to 2am daily. People love and support Windjammers with all their hearts!

The family bonding experience at Windjammers is highly important, from the owners own children whom have aided in its continual success, to the staff in all areas of the bar and grill. Some of the staff have been there for over 10 years. They have all made a strong link with Windjammers and each other throughout the years which has kept the business thriving. All of Lees children love the place as well. Come to Windjammers and be a part of the family.

Rachel Francisco ~ Erie InsuranceI was born and raised in Rochester. Started working at age 15 (the earliest they would let me). I have always aspired to be a business owner but thought it was out of reach for many years. After working several years in the insurance business I decided I wanted to start my own business - to build my future and to treat customers the way I want to be treated. I was and am determined to be the best local /neighborhood insurance agent. I truly care about all my clients and go above and beyond to help them in any way I possibly can. I also like to use local businesses for any of my personal or business needs such as cleaning, plumbing, heating etc... I always contact one of my clients first. Local connections and small businesses supporting each other is very important to me.

We grind many of our spices & mix our seasoning blends with our own recipes, all on-site at our Shop in Rochesters South Wedge. Our 200+ spices and seasonings contain no MSG or gluten, and we have a large selection of no salt seasonings. In addition to our retail Shop, we provide spices and seasonings to local restaurants and butcher shops. We are also at the Rochester Public Market, April-December.Why Shop with Us? We start with premium spices; spices that contain high essential oils and flavors. This allows us to provide you, our customer, with the freshest tasting ingredients. We dont just sell spices - we enjoy talking with our customers about food preferences and cooking, and sharing our knowledge and understanding of how our spices and seasonings can help you wow your friends and family!Do you like learning about spices, seasonings or cooking? Our business started out with a dream of owning our own garage. After visiting several facilities and not having a good experience, we decided now was the time. We wanted an honest, friendly place for people to go. I think Dan Sr. was born a mechanic along with our son. As kids, he built go-carts with engines and drove them up and down the road. He started repairing lawn mowers, then started tinkering with cars. Somehow he always knew what made what work. Our son at the age of three already knew what tools his dad needed... that never did cease to amaze us. From there, they both worked in machine shops as mechanics, and set-ups while working on cars on the side. I used to call them driveway mechanics. Now we own and operate D&L Speedy auto in Dansville N.Y. - family owned and operated. Our goal is to make everyone feel welcome, with honesty and integrity. We know we cant please everyone, but we will do our best to try!Come on in for an estimate, or just to say hi!

The following canine pet tips are based on my years of working with dogs and the energy I use in my Animal Reiki Practice. More information can be found on my website www.animalreikiheals.com. The tips also reflect some of the philosophies and strategies used by Cesar Millan.

    1. By providing water, food and affection you can win a dogs trust. The only way you can earn his respect is by giving him structure and by walking with him in a relaxed and confident manner. Your energy extends from you, through the leash to him.

    2. A dog will trust a strong leader, but will take control if you dont lead.

    3. Use the power of intention to increase your pack leader skills, especially while walking your dog. Imagine that you personify strength and confidence and you will be able manifest that reality. You can also focus on a person who exemplifies that competence.

    4. Your dogs behavior is always, in some way a mirror or your own. If your pet is stressed or anxious, take a good look at what is going on in your own life.

    5. We love our dogs and want to give them affection all the time. However, if you try to coddle them while they are anxious, fearful or stressed, you will actually nurture that unwanted behavior. Offer patience, calm and centered energy and sound leadership instead.

    6. It is never a good idea to tease a dog. It destroys trust and can make a dog aggressive.

    7. According to Cesar Millan, Improving your dogs behavior is like staying on a diet. Youll see lasting results only if you stick with it for a long time.

    8. Remember that dogs live in the moment. With proper leadership and guidance they can heal from years of trauma, neglect or behavioral issues (especially with Reiki energy).

    9. Yes, your dog does get exercise running around in the back yard. It cannot, however, take the place of a daily walk. They have a primordial need for daily walks with their pack leader. If you cannot walk your dog daily, see if a family member or friend would be willing to fill in.

    10. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise. A high energy dog that doesnt get enough exercise will likely take out his frustrations on other animals or people. Practice remaining calm and centered.

    10 Pet Tips for Your

    Furry Best Friend

    By Jill Rene Buckman

    Reiki Master

The words pierced her soul: Your dog has inoperable cancer. There is no hope. Were sorryThere are as many reasons for a person to start a new path in life as there are people. On that day in 2010, as Jills mind absorbed the horrifying news that her beloved seven year old border collie, Skye, had no hope of survival, something all-encompassing enveloped her. After momentarily feeling traumatized by heartache and paralyzed with nauseating fear, she was guided by something so loving, so gentle and yet powerful to find a way to save him. Jill was guided to Reiki, a holistic form of spiritually guided energy healing that originated in Japan thousands of years ago. As she was taught how to channel the energy, she offered it to Skye daily.Skye will be 12 years old next month. He not only survived, but is thriving. Jill continued her Reiki training and is now a Reiki Master. She is an Animal Intuitive who discovered her lifes purpose because of her passion to heal and to ultimately save her dog. She is a dedicated healer with an unwavering desire to ease pain and to bring about positive change for all living things. Jill launched her business Whispers from Within because of her passion for animals and her desire to offer pets (and their people) a deeper healing for illness, injury, disease, or behavioral issues. It is her belief that there can be no greater healing than that which is guided by a higher power and offered with an open heart. When a pet (or person) receives Reiki energy he enjoys a deeply relaxing experience that reduces stress while promoting feelings of calm, comfort and well-being. It is always safe, extremely gentle, painless, and non-invasive. Reiki has been used in healing practically every known illness or injury. It complements both conventional and alternative therapies, can never cause harm and is always beneficial. It adds an important element to the healing and behavior therapy that animals can receive in our society. Reiki is a language that animals readily understand and appreciate. It is a simple yet powerful healing method that can heal challenging problems and improve the quality of life.In addition to offering Reiki, Jill is an Animal Communicator who understands and respects an animals wisdom and point of view. Animal Communication can be described as deepened intuition or telepathic communication. It is the language of all life. By being able to hear whatever it is they want her to know, Jill works in partnership with the pet. Animals long to be understood just as humans do. With communication, a deeper healing is possible. In addition, profound healing occurs when Jill uses her visualization and intention techniques as well.Whispers from Within offers combination treatments for the owner and pet, treatments just for the pet, just for the owner, or for any person or animal in need of healing.

Take Ca in Your Yard...Providing your cat or dog with a fun, safe environment with ample shelter and drinking water are all parts of Spring and Summer backyard preparation and enjoyment. There are some dangers to keep in mind while enjoying your yard. Many plants can be harmful to our beloved furry friends. Make sure you are aware of the potential dangers and provide adequate protection from these plants (listed below), or remove them altogether from your landscape. There are plenty of pet-safe options at your local nursery. Keep meat and dairy out of compost piles and keep piles fenced so your pets will not be tempted to dig up a snack, or attract unwanted vermin.Make sure to pick up dog waste regularly to prevent to spread of other nasties like Whipworm, Tapeworm, and a sorted mix of other parasites and harmful bacteria. Use preventative treatments to reduce your pets chances of exposure. See your veterinarian for options.Always remember to see your vet regularly for vaccinations and yearly health check-ups.

  • Are Your Pets Ready For a Natural Disaster

or Emergency? What if you needed to grab everything you could think of to survive for a few days, or even a week away from your home and the basic supplies? Would you be ready or able to have the necessities quickly? Important documents, photos, are also important. We all should have a survival kit in arms reach - in the unfortunate event we ever need it, it will be there. What about your pets? Of course we all would bring them with us - the pack stays together. Do you have ready what they would need? Here are some valuable ideas to keep in mind, and create your own Pet Survival Kit.Crates and Carriers: Can you easily house several animals in one crate? If you have 2 cats, and only one carrier, do you have another option to maintain control of the other cat if they can not be housed together. Food: Have enough of their regular daily food for at least 7 days - a Gallon Zip-lock bag is usually enough, depending on kibble size. Dont forget a plastic or metal dish.Water: Bottled water is best. Rationing is always important with both food and water. Bring as much as you can carry, I pack 6 bottles in my Survival Kit. Dont forget a plastic or metal dish.Proof of Vaccination: This will help if you and your pets are separated and/or quarantined. This also will have your veterinarians information listed.Photos: Recent photographs of your pets will help in identification and proof of ownership, in the event you and your pets are separated.First Aid: Basic first aid kits are a must ALWAYS and ANYTIME. You should have one in your car. Pet First Aid kits can be obtained through the American Red Cross. If your pet is on any medications, be sure to have an extra prescription filled for the kit. Store them in their original bottles with labels attached.Other items to include: Zip-lock bags of dog treats and cat treats, blankets or towels, familiar toys, extra leash or harness, poopie bags and a few garbage bags.Portable/disposable litter boxes are also handy.

BE READY. BE SAFE. BE SURE.BE READY. BE SAFE. BE SURE.BE READY. BE SAFE. BE SURE.
