Chris Binnington met Fleur in November 2008 and was instantly smitten byher northern charm.

Four years on they began a new chapter in life, marrying in Cyprus.However, shortly after, Chris developed a worrying cough.

Tests revealed germ cell cancer, and the diagnosis soon became terminal.The couple had their first, and possibly last, anniversary in October.

UK Citizens marrying in Cyprus Before you set off make sure you’ve got everything sorted on the legal side!

The ‘ checklist

● Full 10 year Passport (with at least 6 months remaining)

● If you are an Irish Passport Holder you will need a ‘Certicat de Coutume’ which you can obtain from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ireland or the Irish Embassy in London. The certificate is valid for 120 days from issue date

● Full birth certificate● Statutory Declaration / Affidavit (to state that you are free to marry, Scottish

& Welsh Citizens may also obtain a ‘Certificate of No Impediment’ from the District Registrar)

● Notice of Marriage and a Baptism Certificate (if marry in a Church, at least one Baptism Certificate is required)

● Adoption Certificate (if applicable)

● Decree Absolute (in the case of any previous divorce(s))

● Death Certificate (in the case of widows/ widowers)

● Change of Name Records (stamped by solicitors & if applicable)

Marriage LicencesNotice of Marriage: Marriage can take place 15 days to 3months after application

Both the Bride & Groom must apply jointly, in person, tothe Marriage Officer of the Municipality of the area in whichthey want to marry.

A short (10-15 minute) marriage ceremony isperformed by the marriage officer in the mayor's office on the agreedDate.

Once the criteria of the Marriage Notice havebeen met, the marriage may be performed by a registered minister of religion in church. This will have to be arranged separately by the

couple planning the wedding.

Note:A Catholic ceremony is not legally binding unless you first have a civilwedding ceremony.

If you have an Anglican wedding ceremony you are not required to have acivil wedding ceremony.

To have an Anglican Ceremony at least one of the Bride or Groom will needto provide a Baptism Certificate. For a Catholic Ceremony both the Bride &Groom will require a Baptism Certificate.

Cyprus on 27 � May 2013.

“We had been together 12 and a half years, when we

got married. We met when I was 19 and Craig was

six months younger being 18 and a half, at a nightclub

in Uxbridge in November 2000. My friends knew Craig

from our secondary school days but I never met him.

Craig proposed on my 30th Birthday in November 2001.

It was a complete surprise as I thought he was buyingme a watch for my birthday. He disguised the ring

as my present in a massive gift box. The ring box was

huge too, me still not having a clue believing there was

a watch inside. When I opened it, there he was in the

him what he was doing, he popped the question and

my initial reaction was to say ‘no’ as I thought it was a

Louis Phaethon Beach Hotel at their gazebo overlooking

We chose this hotel to stay at as it was very family

Orientated and had good reviews on Trip Advisor.

We booked the hotel in June 2012

For the Reception we walked there as it was a restaurant

next to the hotel

We chose the restaurant as it had a peaceful setting on

the beach with its own beach bar and a great grass area

for the children to play.

Flowers & Décor

I had white/ cream, gerberas in the round bouquet bound

with navy blue ribbon and some diamanté’s scattered

Throughout. We had navy blue chair covers for the chairs

at the civil ceremony which was then taken and put on

the chairs at the restaurant. I’m not a very flowery person

- Craig chose my bouquet for me.

Describe your table centrepieces:

We had 3 extra-large looking wine glasses that were filled

with clear crystals, along with a few scattered blue crystals

and a gerbera flower. On the table we also had scattered

clear and blue crystals.

Did you offer favours, if so what were they?

No, we didn’t have favours, instead we made it a free bar.

The Cake:

In Cyprus this was a very basic round sponge cake thathad a blue and gold ribbon around the outside and a

cream gerbera on the top. Our main Wedding Cake was

What was the best part of the day and why?

I have so many heart-warming memories when I think back to one of the best days of

my life. Walking back down the aisle once it was announced we were husband and wife.

I couldn’t have been happier. Seeing our guests’ faces when our surprise wedding

Double Decker bus arrived was magic. The whole day was perfect. We had a slight hitch

with my dress that you could see one of the lace layers at the bottom and that my hoop

would not stay pinned together, but nothing that safety pin and a bit of Sellotape

couldn’t fix!

Did you encounter any problems during the planning stages?

At the beginning of January within 24 hours of each other 3 things happened: the shop

where I ordered my dress went into liquidation and I didn’t know if they would fulfil my

Order, I had to find a new cake maker for our UK Reception and my engagement ring

Broke. Luckily within the week everything was sorted.

Is there anything you learned that you think is an important tip for future Wedding

Couples?

Definitely - arrange the day how you want it, it is after all your Wedding Day!

Wedding Decoration: Dress the same as you wouldyour Wedding Favour but instead of popping in somegoodies, sit a scented tea light candle in the middle(tie in your theme/ colour scheme by matching in thecolour of the candle.

We found these greatcandle table numbers madeusing tissue paper transfersfrom Simply Turquoise,and we just had to share!

What you will need: Embossing Gun, Wax Paper, Tissue Paper,Candle (must match exactly totissue paper & vice versa,Permanent Pen/ Pencil/ Coloured Pen, Scissors

Step 1: Smooth out the tissuepaper and cut a piece to theheight of the candle and draw(or trace from a print out off the computer) a number usingyour pen/ pencil. Tip: Pencil

gives a softer look, the lookpictured left was created usinga permanent marker.

Step 2: Trim any excess tissuepaper away.

Step 3: Take a large piece of waxpaper (large enough to wraparound the candle). With the tissuepaper on the candle, wrap the waxpaper (waxy side against thenumber) and hold it tightly holding

the ends of the wax paper aroundthe back of the candle.

Step 4: Using the embossing gun,heat the entire area of the number.The heat will slightly melt the candleand the wax from the wax paper,transferring your tissue paper number onto the candle!

Step 5: Let it cool before removing.Tip: If the tissue paper lifts off withthe wax paper, it didn't melt enough,try again holding the embossing gun

over for longer.

‘A Ball for Binny’More than 1 in 3 people will develop a formof cancer in their lifetime. It is a disease that

doesn't discriminate, & touches all our lives.Sadly, just over half of sufferers survive 5 ormore years, & there are around 157,275deaths per year in the UK alone.

Originally starting as a Facebook group,Cyprus Brides to be was a place for ladiesto discuss, share ideas, & help each otherwith planning their wedding abroad.However, it became more than that.The ladies became friends, confidants;an online sisterhood.

Then in June 2013, one of our well-lovedbrides, Fleur, & her new husband, Chris,received devastating news. Chris wasdiagnosed with cancer. To our heartbreak,they were told the words nobody shouldever have to hear. It was terminal.So the girls of Cyprus Brides to be begana new, secret group, Fleur's Friends.

‘Why Stop there?’

Through this, funds have been raised inorder to provide little treats for Fleur &Chris, affectionately nicknamed 'Binny'.

Whether it's an anniversary cake in hospital,or for the family to go & seeWolverhampton Wanderers play, the girlshave worked hard to provide the Binningtonfamily with happy memories during thetime they have left.

However, the thought moved to "whystop there"? And indeed, why stop there?With so much accomplished in such shorttime, the ladies decided to do somethingthat would benefit all those affected byCancer. Now known as 'The Cyprus Ladies',they are a group of 175 (& counting!),brides & brides to be.

Hosting their first event, a charity ball, whichwill be held on Saturday the 20th of September, 2014. It is appropriately named'A Ball for Binny', which of course, isdedicated to Mr.Chris Binnington.

All proceeds of this ball will go directly tothe cancer charity or charities of Binny's choice.

"Chris and I met in Nov 2008 through a singleparents holiday club, so smitten was he by mynorthern charm he drove the 240 miles totake me out for a meal.We got engaged a few months later as wealready knew then that we wanted to spendthe rest of our lives together. We spent thenext few years bombing it up and down thecountry to see each other, and then hefinally moved up north in Nov 2010.

Our Cyprus wedding in Oct 2012 was the bestday of our lives. I know that sounds like acliché but it really was, marrying my bestfriend and soul mate. We were starting ona new chapter in our lives and couldn't waitto start to fulfil all our hopes and dreams.After only 7 months of this new chapter,things changed. Chris became poorly with acough that he couldn't shake and after 3weeks of tests he was diagnosed withadvanced Germ Cell cancer.

Initial treatment of chemotherapy at TheChristie hospital showed Chris was fightingback, but our happiness was to be shortlived as the cancer soon became resistantto the chemo and the prognosis changed

to terminal.

We made a decision then that we wouldn'twaste a minute of our precious time togetherfeeling sorry for ourselves, that's not tosay we haven't cried, or cry now.Chris believes he has been dealt this handso that someone, somewhere doesn't haveto be parted from their loved ones. “Thatsomeone could be a child, and I'm takingthis for them” he says, such is his army,band of brother’s mentality. So wechoose to 'live' with cancer, and we havelots of living to do.

Our charity ball is our way of givingsomething back to all the amazing peoplewho have helped us, our amazing familyand friends, the incredible team at TheChristy hospital who have looked afterChris and Cancer research UK.It is Chris' last wish that more researchcan be done so others can be cured of this cruel disease.Chris has had 43 years of life, and I havebeen lucky enough to have known andloved him for 5 years, and for that weare truly blessed."
