Welcome The 2014 season is now upon us so it is with great pleasure that this pre-season (slim-line) edition of the Cygnet Sea Dragons newsletter (The Green Weekly) is released. Welcome back to all those returning parents and children and all new families joining this great club. To all new families, I hope you will enjoy your time with the club and our weekly (during season) newsletter!!! Following are some dates to remember: Important dates to note: Training: Juniors – began Friday 14 March – 4pm-5pm Cygnet Primary School Oval – and weekly thereafter (except school holidays). Youth team (U14) – Thursday 6pm at Cygnet Oval then at Huonville when daylight saving ends under lights. Registration Deadline: Juniors - Saturday noon 5 th April (to guarantee a place on the team). Youths - closed Grassroots coaching course: Sunday 13 th April 2pm to 4:30pm (Cygnet Primary Oval) Registration Fees: Juniors $78 (full season) -- $68 (2 nd child onwards) Registration Process: Self Registration – instructions have been issued (please contact me if problems) First Round of Matches: Saturday 10 th May. Youth team - This weekend is the first game of the season for our U14 Youth Team. We are playing at 2pm at Huonville against the mighty Tilford Zebras. This should be a cracker and we look forward to seeing how our troops go against one of the Goliaths of Southern Tassie football (soccer). Can parents get players to the game no later than 1:30pm please. Adult team: Some may have heard rumours that an adult team is in town. This season Cygnet will field its own adult team – Cygnet Town FC. This is a separate entity to our Juniors/Youths, but very much part of our football community. I will be including the trials and tribulations of our adult team in the newsletter going forward and it would be great to see a crowd at future home games. The team won 3-2 In their first ever match (pre-season friendly) against Barnestoneworth last weekend. Registration and Coaching: Junior registration closes this Saturday at noon (12pm). If you fail to meet the deadline, entry in to a team will only be on the basis that a team needs players. Contact Dave Sayers to discuss registration if you miss this date. Teams will be then sorted out and announced next week. As is the case with every season, without coaches there are no games. This year we look like fielding a large number of teams again and some teams are still not set for its supplement of coaches/co-coaches/parent group coaches. GET INVOLVED - Take a team, share a team with a friend, do it together, split trainings and games between you. It is not difficult and we are here to show you that there is no magic. All we need is for you to put your hand up. It is heaps of fun, very rewarding and a great way to participate in your community. As it stands, we will not know final teams until post registration this weekend, but U11 and U12 will need assistance on a weekly basis (match days and training). More to follow once teams are finalised this weekend.

1. Welcome The 2014 season is now upon us so it is with great pleasure that this pre-season (slim-line) edition of the

Cygnet Sea Dragons newsletter (The Green Weekly) is released. Welcome back to all those returning

parents and children and all new families joining this great club. To all new families, I hope you will enjoy

your time with the club and our weekly (during season) newsletter!!! Following are some dates to

remember:

Important dates to note:

Training: Juniors – began Friday 14 March – 4pm-5pm Cygnet Primary School Oval – and weekly thereafter (except school holidays).

Youth team (U14) – Thursday 6pm at Cygnet Oval then at Huonville when daylight saving ends under lights.

Registration Deadline: Juniors - Saturday noon 5th April (to guarantee a place on the team). Youths - closed

Grassroots coaching course: Sunday 13th April 2pm to 4:30pm (Cygnet Primary Oval)

Registration Fees: Juniors $78 (full season) -- $68 (2nd child onwards)

Registration Process: Self Registration – instructions have been issued (please contact me if

problems)

First Round of Matches: Saturday 10th May.

Youth team - This weekend is the first game of the season for our U14 Youth Team. We are playing at 2pm at Huonville against the mighty Tilford Zebras. This should be a cracker and we look

forward to seeing how our troops go against one of the Goliaths of Southern Tassie

football (soccer). Can parents get players to the game no later than 1:30pm please.

Adult team: Some may have heard rumours that an adult team is in town. This season Cygnet will field its own adult team – Cygnet Town FC. This is a separate entity to our

Juniors/Youths, but very much part of our football community. I will be including the

trials and tribulations of our adult team in the newsletter going forward and it would

be great to see a crowd at future home games. The team won 3-2 In their first ever

match (pre-season friendly) against Barnestoneworth last weekend.

Registration and Coaching: Junior registration closes this Saturday at noon (12pm). If you fail to meet the deadline, entry in to a team will only be on the basis that a team needs players. Contact Dave Sayers to

Grassroots course: And to help you assist coaching a team, we are holding the grassroots course on Sunday 13th from 2pm to 4:30 at our home ground. This Football Federation Tasmania course will help arm you with the knowledge and confidence to help with coaching in any way. Let me know if you can come

(apart from those who already have) or just turn up on the day. We have the numbers to run the course so

this will definitely go ahead.

Wet weather –A reminder on the rule I will implement for wet weather. If is raining on the day of training, I will only cancel training prior to 1pm via e-mail and our facebook page. If you have not heard by 1pm, training is on. It is up to parents whether they want their child to play but we will be there for either training

or a kick about depending on numbers. For the youth team, if you have not heard from myself or George

Wilson(email and facebook) by 3pm, assume training is also on.

Canteen Coordinator – This season Alison is looking to retire from the role she has brilliantly performed for the past few seasons. While canteen will be open initially, we need someone (or group of parents) to

volunteer to manage the canteen this season. Al will be able to explain the process of what is involved to

aide the transition.

The canteen is a favourite of players and visitors (famous for its Boks Bacon and snag sarnie) and the clubs

main source of ongoing revenue, so without it there would be no club long term. If no one volunteers then

the canteen will close as there is only so much some of us can do. PLEASE CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING FOR

THIS ROLE.

Line Marker – We will also need someone or a group of people to do the line marking for the season. We are about to receive a new line marker soon which will make the task much easier. We will do the initial

mark out, but from then on we need some volunteers to continue line marking. Please email me if you can

help out.

Match days – This season, if your match is the first scheduled for our home venue, please arrive early and help set the field up with other parents (nets, corner flags etc). It is not the coaches’ responsibility to also

set the field up, so please help set the field up and allow the coach to get the kids ready for the game.

Junior Uniforms - If you need to purchase a soccer uniform for your junior player for the coming season, please email our Uniforms Officer – Janine Wendeling on [email protected] (0459 034 125) or

seek her out at training (Se is the loud one!!!). She is also taking receipt of any 2nd hand uniforms that are

no longer needed so if you have any please let Janine know.

As a reminder, uniforms Prices are as follows:

Shirt - $16 Shorts - $16 Socks - $10 Sizes (General Guide):

S (32) U5-8 (Born 2006-09) SS U5-8 (Born 2006-09) S (9-2) U6-7 (Born 2007-09)

M (36) U9-11 (Born 2003-05) S U9-11 (Born 2003-05) M (2-7) U8-12 (Born 2002*-06)

L (40) U12 (Born 2002) M U12 (Born 2002) L (7-12)

U12 (Born 2002*)

*Go by your child’s shoe size and if they are sizes 2 or 7 err on the higher

size. Unlike shirts and shorts once your child has put them on their feet we

can’t resell at full price – will cost you $5 to exchange

Welcome all and the new season. The next full newsletter will be once the

junior roster has been finalised. In the meantime don’t forget to like our

facebook page and I will keep you posted on any news via e-mail (as

well as the youth team and adult results).

COACHES BOX

For the new families joining our club, here is a snippet from the Coach (George Wilson) from one of last season’s newsletters. Back to Winning Ways, with help from Hendricks and Robey…….and Dave:

Regular readers of this column will know that we use a predictive formula courtesy of Hendricks and Robey to predict the results of our matches and we change the input variables to our advantage where the formulaic output is not in our favour.

Hendricks and Robey achieve this by calculating the probability distribution of the coefficient of variation, as can be seen from the formula itself which is reproduced here:

where the symbol indicates that the summation is only over even values of n-1-i.)

It is on the record, per last week’s report, that:

“2. According to H&R we will turn things round, at least this weekend, and will win v Beachside, a

team higher up the league. When we least expect it our kids will come through with a hearty

helping of the old Sea Dragon spirit.”

Hence it was no surprise when we prevailed against Beachside, or was it? The real strength in this

formula is the ability to analyse and interpret it as any budding scientists among you will already know but failing that you probably simply took our word for it. The middle part of the equation with the cv to the power n-2 divided by the Cv squared plus one with the resultant number

calculated to half the power n is classic coefficient of variation stuff portraying clearly that at least an inch of rain would fall in the 24 hours leading up to the match. What I didn’t spot though

and with hindsight I can now see clearly in the n to the power i/2 part is that we wouldn’t have a referee meaning I would have to stand in and hence take no active part in coaching duties. This however had no negative impact on our chances as Dave Sayers was on-hand to take on full

coaching duties despite simultaneously trying to fend off a head cold. At 1-3 down in the second half Dave’s last roll of the dice resulted in us scoring four consecutive goals to lead 5-3 (if

we can produce two more performances like that Dave gets a name upgrade and will henceforth be known as “Big Dave”). Beachside managed to pull one back but we held on to win 5-4. Dave’s changes certainly freshened things up a bit and blew away the staleness that

had set in with various players screaming out for a change of position. Josh Wilson in charging through central midfield and delivering text book through balls for our attacking duo, had his

best ever game for the club. Rowan Shelton was immense in the second half after moving to defensive midfield. Hugh McGarry, in the second half, was supreme in central defense. Silas Richter and Brady Cook relished their second half run outs in midfield. Christian Sayers and Isaac

Beecroft in attack stretched their defense and created space and openings for each other with both attackers grabbing a brace. After scoring in the first half Vincent Chancellor even had a run at left back. Of course it would have all been to no avail were it not for Archie Cumper

playing a blinder in goal and stopping almost everything that our opponents threw at him. Other than that Jake Buckland provided stability in midfield, Hannah Parish chipped in with her regular

solid contribution at right back and Arya Clare had her best game so far.

As for the coming weekend at New Norfolk I’m sure the outcome is written in the formula but I’m

arsed if I can find it (remember Dave and I are not experts in formulaic interpretation either). In an attempt to get some guidance I got in touch with the world’s foremost authority, the Emeritus Professor of the University of the erm…..United Arab Emirates, one, Professor Abdullah MacDullah.

He soon pointed out that certainly the n-1, i=0 part clearly portrays that it will probably take 1 ½ hours to drive to New Norfolk from Cygnet +/- 20 minutes (and a similar amount of time to

drive back) so all good so far. The good Professor was going to do some research and get back to us the next day on the likely outcome of the match but alas he was arrested by the state

secret police that evening and lined up in front of a firing squad. It therefore looks like we’re on our own on Saturday but if we can keep producing the application, focus and never say die attitude we demonstrated last Saturday Dave and I will be more than happy, regardless of

results.

Message for All Parents (and Kids): If your child is unable to play for any reason please contact your team coach or reply to Dave Sayers who

will pass message on as if we know in time we may be able to get a player from one of the other teams to

double up and therefore we avoid playing short or having to borrow from the other team. Telephone

numbers of team coaches above fixtures, results and scorers – item 9.

7. Canteen roster (Coordinator – Alison Nicholas – contact details below):

Soon we will be calling for Seadragon Canteen volunteers. Volunteering for canteen is easy and

a great way for Seadragon Supporters to catch up with others, help out and watch their

Seadragon's game! If each family (without coaching commitments) can help out one Saturday

during the term the Seadragons Canteen will run at its most efficient and most profitable.

Canteen is the Seadragons Soccer Club's biggest fundraiser so your support is essential!

Instructions for Volunteers: What to do?

Alison (canteen coordinator) will contact you a few days before your rostered on Saturday to

organised who will bring what.

- Volunteers will buy/bring bread, milk, free-range eggs and sliced onions (we love eggs from

home gardens)

• Boks bacon and sausages will be provided by Alison, either Friday night training or before

matches start on Saturday.

• if more sausages etc. are required on the day, they can be purchased locally in Cygnet.

- Please arrive 15mins before first game starts.

- When you get there the canteen will be unlocked. All the stock and supplies are in plastic

boxes and cupboards inside the canteen.

- Volunteers setup inside canteen, ready for service; setup bbq, cook bacon, eggs, onions and

sausages; serve; clean up and put everything back.

- Volunteers place receipts in Float container and please reimburse yourselves for any

expenses. Float goes back to canteen coordinator.

Cygnet Sea-Dragon Victory Song

Chorus:

Green is the Colour

Football is the Game

We’re all together

And winning is our aim

So cheer us on

Through the sun and the rain

For Cygnet, Cygnet is our name

Verse 1:

Here by the Huon whether rain or fine

We can shine

All the time

Home or away

Come and see us play

You’re welcome any day.

Repeat Chorus

To Finish:

What do we eat?

Seaweed

How do we eat it?

Raw
