COURSES 2016

Introduction The Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź has always been an importantpoint of reference for all wishing to engage in artistic printmaking andtextile art, both in Poland and abroad. Many of our masters and teachershave been appreciated around the world and have gained internationalrecognition. Numerous foreign artistic institutions, such as the KAUS UrbinoInternational Art Centre and the Academies of Fine Arts in such Europeancities as Barcelona, Belgrade, Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Burgos, Geneva,Helsinki, Istanbul, Lisbon, Ljubljana, Malaga, Murcia, Paris, Sofia or Vilniuscooperate with the Academy. It was this context which in 2013 gave rise tothe idea of organizing the International Summer Courses for ArtisticPrintmaking at our Academy based on the knowledge derived from theanalogous enterprise run in Italy by the KAUS Urbino International ArtCentre for the past twelve years. During its three editions, the event gainedinternational prestige and became one of the main centres of summereducation in Europe and beyond. Many participants from Albania, Belgium,Denmark, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Japan, Italy, Latvia, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the Republic of South Africa, and the USA have chosen our courses to deepen their knowledge andpractice their printmaking and textile art skills. The success of the SummerCourses in Łódź encourages us to continue and develop this artisticundertaking beneficial for promoting the artistic traditions of Łódź in thefields of printmaking and textile art.Since 2015 the programme of the Summer Courses has includedinterdisciplinary classes to complement their educational offer. Since theirbeginning, the courses have been dedicated to these artistic disciplineswhich brought fame to Łódź and the Academy. For the same reason itseems consistent to incorporate classes in graphic design, game and filmpre - production and interactive installation composition into the list ofinterdisciplinary courses.

Due to the high standards of the International Summer Courses PATA allparticipants will receive, apart from the certificate, a document confirmingthe learning outcomes which entitle them to 3 ECTS points recognized byboth academic and professional circles.

PATA NETWORK, an international network of public and private institutions, whose aim is to cooperate in the field of promoting the printmaking andtextile art courses around the world was established in 2014.

ARTISTIC PRINTMAKINGThe Summer Courses for Artistic Printmaking are addressed to bothbeginners in the art of printmaking and experienced artists. The coursesare intended for students and graduates of Polish and foreign Academiesand for all artists wishing to learn or further develop their skills in the field.

The goal of the course programme is to arouse and cultivate the individualapproach to the field of artistic printmaking. The courses will presenttraditional forms of artistic printmaking as well as innovative technologiesdeveloped by outstanding artists. To provide participants with a broaderchoice of techniques during a single course, two of the courses run by Łódźacademic teachers will offer the possibility of simultaneous application ofrelief, intaglio, lithography and silk - screen techniques. The renownArgentinian artist Alicia Candiani will run a course including elements ofboth printmaking and textile art.Participants will have access to the excellent equipment of the studios ofthe Department of Printmaking. There will be a possibility to create both black and white and colour prints. The maximum size of the print will be 100 cm x 70 cm. After the approvalfrom the teacher, an edition of four prints signed and numbered as artist’sproofs will be printed. Two prints will become the property of theStrzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź and its International PrintmakingArchives. The plates will remain the property of participants.Teachers running the courses will be supported by assistants who representthe young generation of talented and recognised artists – teachers of theAcademy and by experienced technical instructors. The official languages of the courses will be Polish and English, but in someclasses it will be also possible to communicate in Italian, Spanish andGerman.

TEXTILE ARTFor almost 200 years Łódź has been an important European textile centre. In the 19th century dozens of textile factories contributed to the socio -economic development of the city. This powerful tradition gave rise tointensive artistic and educational activity, especially at the Faculty of Textileand Fashion of the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź. The CentralMuseum of Textile, an institution unique on a world-scale, vigorouslyoperating in Łódź since the 1970’s, has been upholding the memory of thegreat Polish tradition in that field and of the outstanding internationalpersonalities of textile art. Due to the organization of the InternationalTriennial of Tapestry, currently the only event of this kind in the world, theMuseum has been gathering distinguished international artists. In thiscontext, after the success of the International Courses for ArtisticPrintmaking in 2013, it seemed logical to include in the following editions ofthe summer courses the Artistic Courses of Textile Art, devoted todeepening knowledge about and skills in the field of weaving techniques. Thanks to the assistance of the Central Museum of Textile, the StrzemińskiAcademy of Fine Arts in cooperation with the KAUS Urbino International ArtCentre wishes to promote textile art in all its diversity. The Textile Art Courses are addressed to both people on the brink of theirartistic career and professional artists who have been using textile art as ameans of their creative expression for a long time. Therefore, the coursesare available to students and graduates of Polish and foreign art academies

and to all artists who wish to get to know or broaden their knowledge abouttextile art.The year 2016 is special for textile art circles as it is the year of theInternational Triennial of Tapestry. Apart from a large number ofinauguration exhibitions organised at the Central Museum of Textiles inMay, satellite exhibits will be held all year long. Participants of theInternational Summer Courses will have a chance to visit many of theseduring their stay in Łódź. To celebrate the year of the Triennial andemphasise the importance of textile art in the artistic tradition of Łódź, theAcademy decided to offer as many as four courses in that field. They will berun by academic lecturers from Łódź – winners of numerous prizes, including these awarded during the Łódź Triennial of Tapestry, and by anoutstanding Argentinean artist, Alicia Candiani. The first course, entitledIntersection Point: Development Of Graphic And Textile Art, run by Prof.Candiani, will be interdisciplinary. The second one will involve traditionaltextile art. It will be followed by a course dedicated to textile experimentsand innovative interior objects, and one in printed textile.Teachers running the courses will be supported by assistants who representthe young generation of talented and recognised artists – teachers of theAcademy and by experienced technical instructors.

All participants will have a possibility to donate one or more of their worksto PATA Archives for the purpose of their presentation at potentialexhibitions.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSES:

To complement the educational offer, the programme for the year 2016includes four interdisciplinary courses: an interactive installation course, two courses in graphic design and a course in game and film pre -production. Broadening the range of PATA Courses 2016 is an answer toparticipants needs. Merging and combining classic printmaking andweaving techniques with new media and taking over space to realiseprojects is in accordance with tendencies in current art. One of the aims ofthe summer courses is to acquaint wider circles with the unique tradition ofthe Łódź Academy which is rooted in the avant-garde achievements of theinterwar period. In this context it seemed logical to show the output of theŁódź school of graphic design which had its beginnings in experiences ofthe “a.r.” group, in functionalism and formalism. The proposed coursescombine tradition with modernity, they provide an opportunity forparticipants to try their hand at designing art magazines and book art or atauthorial projects which search for a relationship between typography andcalligraphy.

For a long time Łódź has also been and important centre of games andcomics. Since 1991 the International Festival of Comics and Games, thebiggest initiative of this kind in Poland and in Central – Eastern Europe, hasbeen organized in the city. Each year over 20 thousand guests visit theevent. The Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź has the only Comics,Illustration and Game and Film Pre-Production Studio in Poland andfurthermore it successfully organizes post - graduate studies in that field.

For these reasons we included a course of broadly understood concept artinto the programme of PATA summer courses.

In the case of the indicated courses a paper or digital copy made by thestudents will be included in the PATA Archives. An exception will be made inthe case of the interactive installation course where due to the nature ofthe works a photographic documentation will be prepared.

Course 9August 3 - 17, 2016INTERACTIVE INSTALLATIONS Prof. Danuta Wieczorek, Head of the Fundamentals of Composition Studio 1 Assistant: Joanna Paljocha, MA

The idea of the course is based on the unique teaching programme of theBasic Composition Studio I at the Faculty of Graphics and Painting of theStrzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź. It is the only place in the worldwhere for a long time the issues such as a collection of loose objects as awork of art have been studied. This method of teaching, which derives fromthe spirit of constructivism, structuralism and holism, was devised byProfessor Andrzej Łobodziński. It shows the necessity of taking purposefulactions during the creative process. It emphasizes the equal value of therational factor and intuition.Participants of the course may be students or graduates of art academies,or non -professional artists. They will work in any of the traditionaltechniques (drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, collage, origami, sculpture, etc.) or in a digital technique. In an interior or in the open air, each of them will build an object which will encourage viewer interaction. Every time, the interaction between the object and the viewer will lead tospatial transformations. Transformations or changes in configuration willopen surprising possibilities of interpretation. Creative process and visual actions within the building complex of the

The idea behind the course is to continue the tradition of functional print, typographic Łódź avant - garde and the motto “word is picture” coined bythe patron of the Academy, Władysław Strzemiński, and to carry on theunique programme of the Editorial Design Studio developed by KrzysztofLenk based on structural design. The aim of the workshop is to compile contents of a personal newspaper,magazine/zine/or artist’s book, to develop its graphic and editorial aspectsand finally to publish 1 or 2 copies of the work. The self - edited newspaper, zine or artist’s book becomes a medium ofauthorial expression. A folded poster is a separate element of the project –it is a hybrid form combining features of a flat and spatial form. The task is based mainly on manual lay - out, expressive typography, collage and illustration. The practical part will be preceded by a lecturedevoted to both, presentation of examples of students’ works realized inthe studio and the analysis of the relationship between text and image, basic rules of page ordering, grid and composition of periodicals. The two week long course will result in creating complex and simplegraphic and typographic editorial concepts. All participants should have basic experience in working with the platformADOBE/ Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, Acrobat/.
