Almost 10 years have passed since Mater was founded; what a journey it has been.

From a start-up launch in the middle of a global financial crisis, to celebrating

several recognitions, including Wallpaper* Best New Design Brand, right up to

today, with an expanded collection available in more than 40 countries. Through

stubbornness, entrepreneurial spirit, passion for timeless design and ethical

commitment (or some might say, despite this), we have achieved great milestones.

Mater means ‘mother’ in Latin. The name is the daily reminder of our small

contribution to preventing the challenges ‘Mother Earth’ faces. Design influences

how we as humans live our lives; it shapes values, culture and society. Unfortunately,

we are increasingly aware that the choices made during design processes often

have environmental consequences. However, as a manufacturer, we have the

opportunity to rethink dubious practices and create ethical and sustainable design

that minimises adverse social and environmental impacts.

We do that by: focusing on the importance of using certified wood - we demand

that production partners meet certifications; raising awareness of the impact

of recycling waste, supporting traditional crafts and implementing sustainable

business principles at several production partners, with independent, third party

support. We do it because we have the utmost respect for the materials and people

we work with - and because we care.

This first edition of the 2016 catalogue marks the most ambitious launch of new

products in the company history. By expanding our design and ethical footprint,

we hope to reach even more design-focused consumers and clients that share our

ambitions.

Creating classic, timeless and durable design is at the heart of the Danish design

industry and we take pride in preserving this by commissioning designers of both

Danish and international talent.

Our aesthetic reflects our dedication to high-quality materials, a simple

style and a colour scheme of calm, organic muted tones. Commissioned

designers work with exquisite craftsmanship using genuine materials, such

as certified wood, leather and natural fibres and focusing on clean lines and

fine detailing. Simple, organic and modern shapes add an understated, yet

interesting aesthetic appeal. The Mater collection is an ongoing interplay

of exquisite design talent, shared wisdom from craftsmen and master

artisans, sustainable techniques, premium materials and reflective insights.

With a distinct passion for wood and quality textures, we partner with master

artisans, exploring both ancient and modern techniques. From old woodturning

communities to the newest LED sources, we constantly explore materials and

production methods that are friendly towards mother earth without compromising

aesthetics. An ethical choice of material such as renewable or certified wood,

recycled waste and low energy light sources is our source of inspiration. Great

craftsmanship and pure materials produce quality and durability - making design

that lasts a lifetime and ages beautifully, marking the passage of life.

We care about using resources responsibly in our designs, as well as the quality

of the materials we use, their durability, the timelessness of the pieces and the

conditions in which they are manufactured. We care about the people we work

with by implementing or motivating sustainable business principles within the

production chain, as well as demanding that our rapidly growing base of committed

production partners are properly certified.

We care because within every one of the millions of products we use to improve

our lives, there are associated environmental, ethical and social consequences.

Mater is a Danish design brand, founded in 2006 with a strong vision to create

timeless and beautiful design, based on an ethical business strategy. Through

collaborations with an external base of established and fresh design talent,

Mater combines exclusive high end furniture and lighting, with working methods

that support people, local craft traditions and the environment. Designed for

both commercial and residential use, we strive to avoid and minimise any adverse

impact on society, by following ethical and sustainable production criteria and

creating products that will both stand the test of time and inspire the consumer

to cherish and savour them. Our core business philosophy is based on three key

principles: design, craftsmanship and ethics, which emphasise our approach to

the design industry.

T H E M A T E R D I S C T A B L E is a new family of timeless

and versatile side tables with a strong Nordic character. The

balance between the minimalistic steel legs and the rounded

table top in FSC certified oak, creates a classic and durable

design. The table top is treated with a water-based, matte

lacquer and is available in two sizes.

T H E M A T E R S H E L L L O U N G E C H A I R has a

contemporary and elegant silhouette defined by the

sculptural wooden frame and a “floating seat” that creates

an interaction of stability and dynamism. The leather stitched

seat is inspired by traditional craft practices in North India,

particularly saddle making.

The Shell family is attempting to revitalise this skilled

trade by providing leather-stitching artisans with a global

market for their craft, thus encouraging them to pass it on to

younger generations. The frame is crafted in solid FSC

certified oak with a choice of three different water-based

stains and two different quality leather tops.

T H E M A T E R L I U K U B A S E P E N D A N T S is designed

by Finnish designer Maija Puoskari. It is crafted in solid,

FSC certified oak wood and stripped of excessive decoration,

leaving focus on the simple design. The LED light source is

hidden in the drop - or ball-shaped - design, which is treat-

ed with matt lacquer. The two shapes constitute the base

of the Mater Liuku Pendant, with an additional glass shade.

The minimalistic design means the Liuku Base is ideal as a

single pendant, aligned or in decorative clusters for both

residential and commercial decor.

T H E M A T E R B O W L T A B L E reconciles old

Indian craftsmanship with the simplicity of Scandinavian

design. The table top, made of sustainably sourced

mango wood is turned on a lathe, showcasing the skill of

Kharadi, an Indian wood turning community and support-

ing their local craftsmanship. The Bowl Table can stand

alone or be paired as a side table vignette. The finish used

on the table top is a lead-free, water-based PU lacquer.

The legs are made of milled hollow steel rods and can be

detached for ease of labour and transportation.

T H E M A T E R B O X S Y S T E M is a storage solution

with endless possibilities. The boxes are hand crafted

from sustainably harvested Indian mango wood with a

lead-free, water-based PU lacquer that respects the local

environment. The system consists of boxes in a variety

of sizes and three different finishes. The boxes can be

arranged as room dividers, side tables or wall mounted for

shelving set ups.

cabinet doors, combined with the tight silhouette, makes

simple new range of mirrors, combining leather and

wood. The shape and design is inspired by old barrels and

comes in three different sizes and stains of sustainably

harvested mango wood, in either black or tan leather.

The hand-hammered nails resemble the craftsmanship of

traditional barrel making, which originally helped keep the

hoops in place. The spacing around the mirror creates a light

and optical illusion of a floating mirror.

contemporary pendant lamp consisting of a base in FSC

certified oak wood, which hides the LED light source and

coloured, mouth-blown glass shade. The shade nests on

top of the base creating an overlap of the two natural

materials, which gently fills the space with a beautiful

light. The shade is available in a transparent version or

one of three different colour tones.

The three legged construction in solid oak creates a light and

Nordic appeal to the design. Eat is a result of simplified and

solid craftsmanship. Crafted in FSC certified, soaped oak

with a durable eco-friendly linoleum surface, available in a

green or a dark grey tone.

of the pendant lamp that combines the raw materiality of

sustainable cork with environmental friendliness and

traditional craftsmanship.

The Luiz Lamp is carefully constructed from cork from

responsible managed cork oak forests in Portugal, both

protecting cork production as well as preserving the

local biodiversity in the forests. The metal top of

the Luiz Lamp is made in Denmark by one of the few

remaining workshops that master the spinning technique

to perfection. Available in two different colours.

To maintain the finish quality of your Mater product, please follow the cleaning procedures provided below. The instructions for the care and maintenance are provided to you as a service. No warranty is implied since results may vary.

C A R E A N D M A I N T E N A N C E O F W O O DExtreme heat and humidity can be harmful and create cracks to wooden furniture. Do not place the prod-uct in direct sunlight, near radiators or air conditioning vents, humidifiers, fireplaces, etc.Always use coasters under hot objects, such as coffee pots and cups. In case of any spill clean immediately with a damp, lint-free cloth. Wipe dry with a dry, soft cloth in the direction of the wood grain. Should not be treated with soap or other cleaning agents unless recommended by professional, as it could cause damaging of the wood. In case of any hard stain we recommend professional cleaning. Occasionally and when needed it is recommended to tighten screws.

To clean soaped oak, lightly sand the surface with sandpaper grade 220 or 240. Then wipe with a dry soft cloth on the direction of the wood grain and apply the white soap following the wood grain.

Do not place the product in direct sunlight, near radiators or air conditioning vents, humidifiers, fireplaces, etc. Do not use saddle soap, cleaning solvents, oils, furniture polishes, varnishes, abrasive cleaners, detergents, or ammonia on leather; they will ruin the finish, making it sticky and cracked. Most stains can be removed with lukewarm water. Then wipe the leather with a damp cloth and dry with a soft, dry cloth. In case of large-scale stains we advise you to contact a professional furniture cleaning service.

If the leather is damaged please consult a local furniture leather expert. It is possible to use leather wax to treat the leather or even recolor it, but only after consulting an expert. Leather is an organic material and reacts different to treatment in different climate zones and therefore local advise is needed in case of damaged leather.

C A R E A N D M A I N T E N A N C E O F L I N O L E U MFor general cleaning, wash the linoleum with a soft cloth and a solution of mild detergent and warm water. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use powdered abrasives or other harsh cleansers like hypochlorite bleach; they may deface the surface and change the finish color.
