If back in 1999, when I returned to racing aft er 15 years, you had suggested that I would be the head of the state of Michigan’s leading motorcycle organizati on, I would have called you crazy. I thank the members of District 14 for having the confi dence in me to conti nue to move our District forward. Somehow I fi nd myself here, wondering how to proceed to keep this district headed in the right directi on. Following Brian Kidner, is going to be tough. His passion for the sport is unquesti onable. He was able to solidify this district and all of the divisions, making all of us one. We are an organizati on driven by members, both the individual riders and the clubs and promoters. Without either, we will fi nd that there is no organizati on. Our core membership will maintain close to the same as long as we provide the quality races, tracks and places to ride that we always have. The bigger questi on is how to bring in new members. We need to become sales people, selling the district to those that would not normally become members. Going outside our comfort zones to promote our

district and the multi ple facets we provide beyond the day-to-day operati ons involved in racing off road vehicles. We are Leaders... We are Leaders in off road competi ti on putti ng on the highest quality events, bar none! We are Leaders in promoti ng the American Motorcycle Associati on and are the Premier District in the Country! We as a district have become a powerful force and a leader in ORV legislati on! We are a leader in environmental and conservati on issues of this State's forests ... providing forest restorati on, ORV damage restorati on, clubs that do trail maintenance and forest and highway clean ups! Our Clubs/Promoters and riders provide huge economic value to communiti es and businesses. We have something to sell! I ask all the District Board, Divisional Chairpeople, and the general membership to help come up with ideas on how to bett er promote and market ourselves! Thomas Dunn

6 December 2013 / January 2014 – Michigan’s AMA/D14 Motorsports News

I first got in the sport of 2 wheeling with a Whizzer motor bike in 1957, then on to a Matchless 500, then down to a 213 cc Indian and began racing. First in the chair ice racing, then moved up to solo. I remember one year at Potters Lake near Davison, over 500 entries and 9,000 spectators. We ran a full calendar January, all of February and one year, we were still racing the 24th of March in Ortonville.

The time from the end of ice racing til the first scrambles, it was the annual ritual for a trip to the dealership to buy a few parts and most important, get a schedule. On that schedule we would find maybe 50 scrambles events, 20 or more enduros, could count on both hands the number of ½ miles and short tracks. Lots and lots of Poker Runs, Road Runs, Gypsy Tour, Ionia Pro ½ mile and of course, a Jamboree with 3 nights and days of nearly every facet of motorcycle activity. Let’s not forget just a few hillclimbs which often brought big crowds.

Bear in mind, scrambles being the premier event back then, we took our machines to the track either in the trunk, back seat with the front wheel removed. Only the “rich” guys had pick ups, some had delivery vans or a converted hearse.

Light Weight, up to 250cc A & B, Medium Weight, 251-500cc A&B, Heavy Weight, 501 and over A & B. By 1960, Matchless and BSA were winning most of the Light Weight classes, with an occasional Maico being on the podium Sprints were just coming to the market. Zundaps, NSU and a few others had seen their day of glory.

In the Medium Weights, it was still Matchless and BSA with Gold Stars being the thing to have. Heavy Weights it was Sportsters, Triumph and BSA, a little later, Nortons came into the picture.

Sixty plus entries was a big event, AMA card was $2.00 and I remember well the gate fee going from .50 cents to $1.00. Trophies were often brought to the track in the saddlebags of a Harley belonging to a club member or trophy store owner.

Enduros were very popular, around 20 a year and one ran about anything, a stock road machines stripped down and a set of knobbies and you were good to go. About every brand on the market was represented at enduros. Every event had a title, Jack Pine, Pine Cone, Kinde, Little Burr, the list is endless. Hundred entries as not uncommon, I remember one starting at the truck stop at M-59 and U.S. 23, usually a large number of entries and a huge Poker Run with the event. Believe it was the Acorn.

Another big enduro, maybe the junior to Michigan’s Jack Pine was the “Millington Run.” Shut down by the DNR in 1969. Claimed the land was purchased with “Pitman-Robinson Funds” ie, tax on guns and ammo. No motorized activity! When they show me the paper trail of the funds, I will believe it, otherwise, I will go to the cemetery thinking they lied!

September 16th 1969 was my first trip to the Capitol to the office of Senator Rockwell of Mt. Morris over this very issue. Gosh, if I had a dollar for every trip

I have made since then, I would probably have some decent financial dignity. But the “Dome” gets in your blood. Every bit as bad as twisting the throttle and throwing it sideways. A hobby that costs nearly as much as racing, can take up just as much time, you never get hurt and never get greasy. But you sure can get mad, beat your fist on the table and scream into the telephone.

From that first trip, it evolved into a 3 year long battle of establishing 1500 miles of DNR designated trail. At that time, 3 wheelers and 4 wheelers had not been invented. The Trail Permit fee was $9.00 for 3 years and the Governor stole the money to balance the budget!

Today, Michigan is pretty much the envy of the nation with just a tad shy of 4,000 miles of designated trail on the ground. Our Trail Permit monies have done us decent as we are a self funded program and things will get better in the years ahead as the fee has been bumped up for the first time in well over a decade. We can look forward to better maintenance and even more access and new trail.

Over the past few years ORV users have united and over 40,000 miles of county roads are open to ORV use at 25 mph or less. Just last week, a press release came out from the DNR stating that 9-11 pilot areas will be open in 2014 in the U.P. for access via M roads to gas, food, lodging and area attractions. Once those U.P. Pilots are completed, the M road access will expand the Lower Peninsula town by town, county by county.

This past year saw 240 expanded to the entire state, meaning that every county and township at some point in time in the near future, will have the option of opening selected county roads to ORV use. Mind boggling isn’t it? Who would have ever thought? I know some good friends who have gone to the cemetery, who dreamed of such a thing happening. It’s real and for us to enjoy and appreciate.

With that being enacted into statue, one has to wonder just what the future will bring. Some neat new products are out there and more are on the way. Will it be dune buggy type vehicles, ones that we would be real handy for milk and bread runs, gas for the mower, visiting nearby neighbors. Will they get into organized events such as trail rides, poker runs or even competition.

We as individuals, have little impact on the future of our motorsports, but what we can do is to make certain we support those who are on the front lines in Lansing, taking the heat from not only legislators, lobbyists and the bureaucrats worst of all, some within the sport who don’t know if they are in the seat or about to hit the ground. But their neighbor, relative or acquaintance is an elected official in Lansing and has not learned who to listen to and who not to.

If WE all work together, be involved by sending emails, making phone calls to Lansing when the need arises. Our future here is Michigan for motorized re creation is second to none in the entire nation.

FESNewsFAMILY ENDURO SERIES

Story by Mike Maurer

The final round of the Family Enduro Series was in New Paris, Indiana. The weather started out favorably at key time and the first two sections was good. However, it started to rain before the third section and the temperature dropped. At the final check one father described the last section with this quote, “that was a war”. The wet trail and the colder temperatures had some of the riders in survival mode n the final miles.

The scores were posted quickly and after the trophies were presented the class champions were determined. Each of these riders will be awarded a new set of Enduro Engineering hand guards at the banquet.

The Family Enduro Series would like to thank our sponsors, the clubs and the riders for a successful season – determined by “smiles on faces”. Here is a complete list of the FES participants who will be invited to the banquet in January,

shawr - 10- kylev -

Fellow Riders, A new Ice Racing season is approaching fast and it appears at this point that the weather is going to cooperate. My name is Jeremiah Sherman and I am the Division Chairman for 2014. We all know that this division struggles with Michigan weather, so the last few seasons have been short. We have full schedule planned for this year, with Saturday night races under lights in White Lake. Valley Trail Riders will be hosti ng Snow Scramble races again this year, and the Nati onal Ice Race will be adding Ice Moto Classes on a 1 mile left turn right turn course. As you can see, the clubs and promoters are mixing the riding disciplines for winter events and will conti nue to do so, which ulti mately brings me to my point.

Some 3000 people or so are members of the District but only about 300 of you take part in the district ice events. So during the ti me of year when all the other divisions are taking their long winter naps, less than 10% make it to Ice Race events when 100% of you are available! I think that’s an astounding stati sti c, and is my reasoning for taking the Chair this year, to grow the division. I will be reaching out to other chairpersons to collaborate on ideas and events as well as reaching out to their riders to inform them about ice racing. I am going to be working with a few past champions to develop professional instructi onal videos that will be available on YouTube. The purpose of these videos will be to aid new and uninformed

riders of machine setup and reduce the inti midati on of change. I am looking to increase the points champion awards as well through the use of sponsors and other rider incenti ve programs. Ice Racing is very unique in many ways. You can’t go anywhere anyti me to do what we do. The weather is hard on us and the machines, and we race motors pinned out, wheel to wheel with studded ti res, or maybe no studs at all. It’s a sport that you can tell people about during your travels and make the listener scratch his head as you try to describe the KoldKutt ers, or the Tracti onized ti res, and hear them say “Race on ice!?” “Like on a lake?” There have even been a couple occasions I’ve had to explain that we race

bikes and quads, not pieces of ice, LOL. Truth be told, I’ve had to clarify our sport to District members as well. Ice Racing is a sport that is unique to your heritage as a Michigander, and family traditi on of so many. Let’s face it, it starts with the kids! Let’s keeps our kids on the machines all winter, and keep the traditi on going and start some new ones too. I look forward to seeing you all this year at the track, Happy New Year!

The Jack Pine Enduro returned to the traditional starting location at the Lansing MC clubgrounds. The club needed to arrange additional parking on their property and neighboring land to allow the riders to start and finish the event under the arch.

The 2012 champion Jesse Warner returned to Moorestown in an attempt to get his name on the Cow Bell. He competed with 227 others and he was successful as he had the quickest times in the seven sections. He will be going for a three peat in 2014.

The majority of the riders were from Michigan (81%). We had 16 riders from Ohio and another 14 from Indiana. We also had riders from Texas, Colorado, Illinois and our low point finisher was from Wisconsin (congratulations Stan!). The largest class was the younger riders (C < 29) and the next larger classes were our more expierenced riders in B 40+, B 50+ and A 50+.

Congratulations to all finishers of the 88th annual Cow Bell Classic. Here is a complete list of the 2013 Jack Pine results (Thank you Tom Zettle for the detailed results):

Halloween fun at Baja'sMonster Mash

BAJA ACRES (Millington, MI) | October 27Story by Steve Baginski | Photos by Steve Baginski, unless otherwise noted

How quickly another season of great Vintage racing has come to an end. We headed to Baja Acres on their Monster Mash weekend to close out our series. With most of the classes already having a crowned Champion, this was going to be a day for some good ti mes and sti ll some possible batt les. Ian Lee dressed up last year as one of the angry birds and started a rumor on facebook that this years costume was going to be great. That quickly struck the att enti on of a few other racers including myself. As we went to the line for our races, Ian showed up as a hot dog, Austi n Visger was a clown, Cora Visger was a very scary and obviously pink monster, Tom Lee wore his one piece red jump suit and I was letti ng everyone have fun trying to fi nd Waldo! We all had a blast and intend to do it again next year; hopefully we can get a few more parti cipants?! We also had some fi rst ti me returning racers worth menti oning. Ken, Phil and Steve Ellis all made a reunion trip aft er a few weeks of planning. Phil and Steve had not been to Baja since 1980, and to top it off , this was to be Phil’s fi rst race since he stopped back in 80’! Steve has been racing in California and even won an AMA Nati onal Vintage ti tle earlier this year and Ken has been riding/racing off and on for years. With the help of former Dynamic teammate, Kreg Bigelow, they made this a great race to remember and hopefully repeat again next season.

The Innovati on and Evoluti on racers were fi rst off as I was able to sneak to the inside for the holeshot. Colin Cook and Dean Taylor made quick work of me heading up the fi rst hill. Paul Gillett and Dave Depott ey fought early for fourth as Eli Hovorka was sti ll learning the track in his fi rst season. Bryan Hoeldtke jumped out to an early lead with Bryan Wanke giving chase in second. Ray Brooks was in the mix in third making Bryan work for second. Joe Sangster was back and looking good aft er some bike changes from Bulldogs. Mark Meuhlen was back at it in his second race holding off Mark Havalda. Tom Lee missed the start as Derek Brooks signed up but unfortunately had bike problems in practi ce ending his season early. I was able to keep the top two in sight for most of the race and even doing some batt le with Dean, but they were just too quick for me and left me in third. Colin was on the gas and fl ying away with the moto one win with Dean in second. Paul had to fi ght for fourth and rode great as Dave sett led for fi ft h with Eli in sixth. Hoeldtke would have an easy run late in the race with Wanke falling back a litt le but sti ll holding onto second. Ray would also hang onto his spot in third with Meuhlen taking over fourth with another hard charge. Joe slipped to fi ft h as Havalda closed the gap as well in sixth. For moto two, I was again quick out of the gate but was dropped back to third even faster this ti me as I was no match for Colin or Dean this ti me either. I was able to stay close for the fi rst two laps and then faded. Paul, Dave and Eli all spread out quick and we all ran the same positi ons. Hoeldtke was out to the early lead again in Evo as Wanke was a close second with Ray in third. Joe, Meuhlen and Tom were side by side with Havalda a second behind. Once again Colin was out front and never looked back with an easy 1-1 for the overall. Dean had a solid ride in second and I managed Lance Shelton was ripping on his 125 all day to a third overall

against a KX 500 and a YZ 400F

third with Paul riding great in fourth. Dave held on to fi ft h as Eli was sti ll getti ng back up to speed aft er breaking his leg earlier in the season. Hoeldtke had a solid ride to fi nish out the season with another 1-1 and the Championship. Wanke ran the pace early but faded a bit but held onto second with Ray rounding out the podium. Tom had a great batt le with Meuhlen for a few laps but would eventually sett le into fourth a few seconds ahead of Joe. Havalda would also do some batt le with Meuhlen as he made his way into sixth. However, Meuhlen’s 4-7 was bett er than Havalda’s 6-6 giving him fi ft h overall.

When the gate dropped for the Transiti on, Iron Man and Schoolboy classes, it was Al Doneth with the holeshot. Kris Gillett was a close second with Lance Shelton squeezing up the inside of Joe Sangster. Mark Cook and Bryan Hoeldtke were next followed by Dave Depott ey as Kevin Stone was leading the Iron Men. Ian lee was next with Randy Stone getti ng a great start just ahead of Austi n Visger. Richard Laughlin was just ahead

of Dave Starr and Rick Stone. Jeff was the leader of the next pack followed by Dale Darling, Bill Belote, Ken Ellis, Brian Briggs and Mike Poirier. When the dust sett led in turn one, there were sti ll four riders getti ng back to their bikes. Phil and Steve Ellis along with boy schoolboy riders Cora Visger and Sean Sangster were all on the ground. As the raced conti nued, it was Al out front and pulling away as Kris was on the gas holding a solid second with Lance screaming his 125 in third. Hoeldtke was sti ll in fourth just ahead of Mark with Joe loving more horsepower on his new 250. Ian had taken over the lead with Austi n a very close second as they both moved ahead of Depott ey. The three Stone’s were next with Kevin leading the way with Starr holding off the very hard charging Steve aft er his fi rst turn crash. His brother Phil was right with him as schoolboy

Sean was hanging with them. Dale had moved ahead of Bill and Jeff with Ken holding off Briggs and Poirier. Cora was back on the gas but as long as she fi nished, she was going to be our fi rst female champion! All of the transiti on riders would maintain their positi on with Al out front on his borrowed four stroke. The big change was early on the last lap when Austi n took the lead from Ian and held on for the win. Steve would come back from last to third by the ti me the checkered waived. Aft er the race I found out that he did not get caught up in the fi rst turn crash, but he had forgott en to turn his gas on! Kevin slipped back to fourth as Laughlin also slipped back one to fi ft h. Rick ended sixth aft er taking the spot from Randy. Phil had another bobble putti ng him back to eighth with Starr fi nishing ninth. Bill rounded out the top ten as Dale was liking the new class

POLKA DOTS continued from page PB

At some point or another, most every off-road rider encounters rocks on the trail. Some are big - the size of Coleman coolers - and some are small, more like grapefruits or baseballs. Log crossings are another common occurrence for the vast majority of off-road riders. High winds that took down thousands of trees last season forced Michigan riders to become more experienced in the log-hopping game. And water crossings are common to most every rider as well - even those in the deserts of Arizona and Utah.

What’s not so common is experiencing all of those obstacles in front of thousands of spectators on an arena floor a hundred feet wide by a couple hundred feet long.

Your intrepid reporter had an opportunity recently to experience both the majesty of the great BIG outdoors (the FlexxBars ride in the mountains above St. George, Utah) and the thrills and excitement of

taking part in the final round of the 2013 EnduroX series in Las Vegas*.

*(the GasGas 300 I rode in Utah Thursday was sold, crated, and shipped before I could compete in the Saturday EnduroX event - I went as an avid student and spectator instead)

EnduroX is the brainchild of Eric Peronnard, and in the 10 years of its existence it has grown from a one-off race to a hugely popular series with factory riders and live TV coverage. Beta has Cody Webb (3x winner in 2013), Kawasaki fielded Justin Soule and ISDE Top American Taylor Robert, along with perennial green-rider Destry Abbott, KTM’s factory team included 5x Europeand and now 5x American champ Taddy Blazusiak and off-road legend Mike Brown, Husky had a team, Honda was fielding Colton Haaker … you get the picture.

As the series has grown so have the obstacles that make up the courses themselves. While hare scrambles riders in Michigan may be somewhat familiar with the concept of endurocross, (many of the promoting clubs have incorporated vertical and horizontal tires, rock piles, and chopped wood sections to their tracks) the size and intensity of the obstacles on the Vegas course was daunting. The promoter recognizes that in order for the series to grow the talent pool has to grow and more riders need to compete, but the fast pace of the regular program (two five minute practices before qualifying) discourages novices from even attempting to get into an event. Enter the rookie/amateur experience - a two-hour Saturday-morning session where enduro cross neophytes could walk the track with - and then receive riding instruction from - some of the top racers in the series.

It didn’t take much convincing for Chad

(a customer and friend from Arizona, and subject of a D14 article a year or so ago) to sign-up for the Saturday morning session. His bike GasGas 300 was still on the trailer, we were going to stay for the finals Saturday night anyway, and as luck would have it he had been training with Taylor Robert‘s riding coach for the last couple of months!

We had watched practice and qualifying sessions most of Friday afternoon, but to have Destry Abbott, Jamie Lanza, Mike Brown, and Gary Sutherlin walk the track with us and diagram and explain the different obstacles was truly enlightening.

After the track walk the 11 riders in attendance broke into two groups to tackle the track in segments, again under the watchful eye of the pros who would be racing (for the championship in the case of Mike Brown) only eight hours later. Having expert instruction didn’t make the course

any easier - Chad said he was gassed in just a couple corners - but it did illuminate the correct technique to tackle each obstacle and highlight the extreme skill of the riders who qualify for the events.

At the end of the session there was a two-lap exhibition “race” run, but Chad decided to sit it out. He’d jammed his wrist pretty hard in one of the rock sections and almost run over Mike Brown in the tire corner already, and had decided that as much as he liked the experience, what he learned was that endurocross wasn’t for him.

The Las Vegas course event was the first to offer the rookie orientation, but it won’t be the last. From the promoter’s perspective, it offered a means to expose younger or more-inexperienced riders to the specific discipline of “indoor-outdoor racing”; for the pros it gave an opportunity to give back to the sport, share some knowledge, and get a leg up on the competition by studying lines and options through obstacles; and for the riders it was an opportunity to try their hands (and feet, arms, legs, and lungs) at the extreme sport of enduro cross in a much more focused way with expert instruction and for a much longer period of time than if they had simply signed up and tried to qualify.

Enduro cross is designed to bring the toughest elements of off-road racing indoors, so that instead of riding in front of squirrels and cactus’, premier riders can highlight their skills before a live crowd of thousands and a TV audience of countless others. It easily accomplishes those goals, and provides some of the most exciting racing you will ever see in an arena. The speeds might be slow and the footprint miniscule compared to a true off-road race, but its hard even for pro riders and the action is undeniable._________________________

in eleventh just ahead of Jeff and the other Ellis brother; Ken. Briggs was finding his home in the vintage series in fourteenth followed by Mike. Moto two was another good one to watch as Al took another holeshot and checked out. Lance was fast out of the gate and held second just ahead of Joe then Kris. Ian had a wheel over Steve followed by Kevin. Mark edged out Laughlin and Visger as Rick and Randy were next. The rest of the pack made it through clean and was great to see all the old bikes on the track. Then I looked at the start to see Bryan, Big Mike and Dale all trying to get started. Bryan was first to fire and Mike was a few seconds behind and would take off almost a lap down. Dale would eventually get going as the leaders were coming by. Al would have another great ride out front even if he did have a flat rear tire! Kris used the mighty 500 power and get passed Lance for second. Mark rode better and finished one spot better for fourth as would Joe for fifth. Hoeldtke rode hard but could only manage a sixth after his very late start. Depottey would tangle on the first lap along with four of the Iron Man riders and Sean from the schoolboy class. I hear it was a bad crash and later I found out that

Starr would make his way off the track and straight to the hospital with a badly broken collarbone. He attended the banquet and is healing up and looking forward to the 2014 season. Rick and Rich were also caught up in the crash and would finish at the back of the field. There wasn’t much of a battle for the lead as Ian was on his way to another moto win and overall. Austin

was a few seconds behind with no room to relax as Steve was keeping him in sight. Kevin was also on the gas and keeping tabs on the leaders. Phil was getting back up to speed after his long time off in fifth as Bill riding great in sixth. Briggs turned his day around running in seventh as did Jeff as he was up to eighth. Randy recovered after getting caught in the crash fro ninth as

Ken improved a few spots to tenth. Dale would make his way back to the pack after his slow start to eleventh as he passed Big Mike in twelfth. Rick would ride around to try and earn points in thirteenth and Rich did the same in fourteenth. Sean had a great ride in his second ever race earning his first 1-1 and overall victory. Cora had a great ride and had a blast in her costume as she took home her first State Championship! Congratulations Cora!!

Well I am now well underway in planning for 2014 and have the schedule 99% complete. We are returning to a few tracks that I can’t wait for as well as making a trip to a new one. We had a great year and I would like to thank everyone for competing and supporting the Series. I hope I can provide everyone with another great schedule next year. Check out this paper for our awards banquet photos as well and remember to check www.michiganvintagemotocross.com.

THE BECKER CHRONICLESby Mark Becker #184, Hare Scramble Chairperson

AN OPTIMIST'S VIEW

Another season has come to a close. Typically that means I have to earn my keep as your chair-

man. This involves all the tedious duties that you the reader don’t want to know about. I wholeheartedly agree. It’s bor-ing to write about and even more bor-ing to read. So let’s upshift from neutral into 2nd.

Consider this; ever listen to all the silly nonsense we hare scramble racers say? Let me give you some examples.

Yeah, I woulda made that double if I hadn’t missed that shift…

I’m rusty, haven’t been riding much

Dude, I’ve been riding every weekend

 I’m not feelin’ it today

Yeah, I woke up this morning with the flu and a 105 temp

Man, I drank too much last night...where do I line up?

 This track sucks

This is the most awesome track ever

There’s too many racers out there

There’s not enough racers out there

I got carbon parts on my bike

 How much does that weigh?

 Yeah, I’m sponsored

 I get parts at cost

 I get parts below cost

I just got over a cold, gonna take it easy out there

I’m just gonna trail ride out there, not race

 See me smoke that guy?

 I’m so outta shape

 I didn’t get enough sleep

There’s no good lines through that section

 There’s no traction

 I’ve rode that

 I’ve done that

Scrubbing’s easy, do it all the time

Man, I put 2 clicks more compres-sion and I can rail the corners now

Man, I cranked in 2 clicks rebound and I totally cleared that double

See me flat land that table top?

What tire pressure do you run?

I tried the purple spring in my pow-er valve, what a difference!

 My power band isn’t engaging

 I need a stiffer spring…. I need a softer spring

 I need my suspension revalved

My tuner totally wrecked my sus-pension

I use Brand X in my drink system… much better than your brand

Remember that one section after the trees? (No I don’t)

Did you see me stuff that guy? (If I had you would lose a lap)

What gearing do you run? (What

came with the bike)

 Man, I got monkey-butt bad

 I never get monkey-butt

I always stand when I ride

I always sit when I ride

Yeah dude, if you seat bounce that double you’ll make it no problem

That guy would not get outta my way… what a spode!

Yeah I blocked this guy for a lap, what a jack-wagon

Did you see me bounce off that tree?

That section was gnarly… That sec-tion was too easy

 I don’t ride mud well… I don’t ride sand well… (I don’t ride well period)

Check out my new riding gear… It’s the latest from (trendy brand)

My knee braces always get hung up on my shrouds (either cut them or stop wearing them)

It’s too muddy to ride… I just got new graphics

I have to get back to business. 2014 looks to be another epic season. We have new tracks and 15 total events. That should get the adrenaline pump-ing. Our rule proposals were ok’d by the clubs. All that’s left is to have the AMA give their blessing and I will post them accordingly. As always, I work for you and don’t let me forget it!

By the conclusion of the season our series had 83 different racers. I believe this is a sign of good things to come for next sea-son.

I’m working on the finishing touches for the 2014 MX schedule, it’s shaping up quite nicely.

We added Valley MX to the list of tracks we ran last year, it’s a great addition. So look forward to seeing Steve and Amy a few times next year.

I would also like to welcome M33 Moto-sports park to series again this year. We had a great time at the facility which was built and managed by David Hassell. One of the race dates at M33 may coincide with a mud bog they are putting on. What could be better?

The Banquet details are coming together, with a lot of effort from Brandy and Terry. So let’s get our reservations in.

We would like to thank Progressive Irriga-tion Inc. on contributing to the ATV ban-quet. Their support is greatly appreciated. Well now back to the garage, I have a bit of mess to deal with.

It’s no secret that manufacturing and marketing an off-road motorcycle is a cutthroat business. OEMs have to balance production goals against the harsh reality of the global economic situation, attempting to attract new cus-tomers while retaining those currently riding the brand. Soaring race results can be offset by poor reliability, and selling on Monday may have more to do with a steady parts availability than who won the day before.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the 2014 GasGas 300. The overall design of the machine is familiar, but almost every system has been updated or reconfigured in an effort to improve reliability and out-right performance. Only time will tell the ultimate success of the program, but to this engineer’s eye the changes are well-thought out and

address many of the concerns of the GasGas faithful. 2014 is looking to be a very good year for those riding Spain’s finest off-road bikes._______________________________

BAJA ACRES (Millington, MI) | October 27story and photo submitted by Steve Ellis

Background: The three of us grew up racing in Michigan. Ken starting withenduros, including the Jack Pine, then scrambles which led to Motocross. In 1972 Phil and I were 1st and 2nd at the Port Huron scrambles track (goodells?) overall series, whereby I was series champ in 100 and 125, he was 2nd in 125 and champ in 250. Ken was racing less at that time. We continued racing until 1980, when I stopped due to an injury and just moving on in life. We were all good friends with Dick Bigelow, and we helped encourage his four boys with their racing goals. So Michigan has a longstanding history of brothers racing motocross. Rusty Hibbs and his brother, Hinkles, many others. I needed to come back for a business trip to Ohio, checked the D-14 race calendar and saw the chance to ride the last Baja race. Figured it would be a good hook to convince Phil and Ken to ride together like old times. They are still in Mi, I'm out in CA.

Names and bikes raced at Baja:Ken Ellis - oldest brother. Bike: 1971 Honda SL-100Phil Ellis - middle brother. Bike: 1974 Husqvarna Mag CR-250Steve Ellis- youngest. Bike: 1973 Honda CR-250 Reunion race:- 1st MX race at Baja Acres for both Phil and Steve since 1980, 33 years ago.- 1st MX race PERIOD for Phil since 1980, his 2nd ever ride on the Husky, a bike I found here in CA and "race prepped" for him. Race summary: Moto 1: In the 1st turn, Phil ran into a person that fell in front of him. I was waiting for the starter to signal "ok" (as was told) when the 2nd gate took off! So I wasn't ready and had the gas off. So Phil and I both gathered ourselves up in the 1st turn, essentially starting last. I decided to simply "push hard but at a comfortable pace" and picked off all but the speedy kids ahead of me. In a funny moment, Phil and I both went

ELLIS BROS conti nued from page 27by brother Ken on the same straight, one on the outside, me on the inside. He asked us aft er the moto "where did you guys come from?" He missed our1st turn shenanigans.

Moto 2: We both got good starts, I got to follow (name?) on the Yamaha thatI swear was sideways as much as point-ing forward. Staying with him on the1st lap, one ti me he got so sideways I locked up the brakes fearing that Iwould run him over as he was about to get pitched to the ground... butagain he saved it. Never seen so many "saves per minute" in all my yearsof moto. As the results show I slot-ted into 3rd behind the speedy "twentysomethings" and Phil landed in 5th, an outstanding ride for only his secondmoto in 33 years on a bike he rode just once beforehand. Ken doesn't like the sand especially on a very under powered and old buttricked out SL-100, he sti ll had a blast. Ken said it has been at least 40years since the three of us lined up togeth-er on the same starti ng line. So needless to say, the Ellis Broth-ers Baja Reunion was a great success. We all piled into the pickup togeth-er just like the old days, had lots offun with a safe day of vintage racing and swapped stories all the way home. While Phil and I enjoyed taking home our nice Baja fi nishing plaques, Kenwas thrilled to hear the Baja team en-joyed our adventure so much they madeKen a special "Parti cipants Award" plaque too. Now we each have a mementoto hang on the wall, as a reminder of our own Baja Bash.
