DAERWOOD SCHOOL
DAERWOOD’S VISION
Together We Learn
211 Main Street, Selkirk, MB. R1A 1R7 Phone 482-4326 Fax 482-3033
We believe in building a
strong school community based on belonging, safety and respect for
diversity, which supports learning, personal
growth and achievement.
It has been a busy and productive month at Daerwood School. I hope that you all have been able to enjoy the recent mild weather, which has been such a bonus in lieu of the fewer hours of daylight. Staff and students have been focused on student
learning and now the assessments are done and report cards have gone home. Thank you to all who came out to parent teacher conferences. It was great seeing the students proudly show their parents and guardians their accomplishments. Kudos to the teachers and students who did a stellar job of having a wide representation of work available to look at and discuss. Please remember to mark your calendar, December 19th for the Christmas concert at 2 pm and 6:30 pm. Our Music Teacher, with the help of many staff and students, have spent countless hours getting ready for the concert. Thank you to all the parents who have been dropping off their children early in the morning for practices. The students sound great and I can tell you that it is going to be awesome! The students are very much looking forward to singing for you! We have two concert times: 2pm and 6:30 pm. There will be a 50/50 draw plus two additional draws for some beautiful baskets. There will also be a silver collection to go towards the cost of putting on the program. If you have not seen the Lord Selkirk School Division Fall Newsletter titled “Behind the Scenes”, you will want to read the article called “The Wonder of Grace” about Mrs. Johnston, School Counselor, and her therapy dog, Grace. You will find the story included in this newsletter. I would also like to give a shout out to the parents on our Parent Advisory Council who work with the school to not only fundraise but to dialogue with us on many school initiatives. Thank you also to the parents who volunteer to bring a hot lunch to our students on a regular basis. You’re the best! The After School program on Mondays and Wednesdays has been a big success! Thank you to the City of Selkirk for providing this program to our community.
This is a busy time of year, however, it is my hope that you will take time to enjoy your
families, friends and neighbours.
Have a blessed and safe holiday season,
Kris Friesen
Principal

Music Notes
A BIG congratulations goes out to all of the students who sang “O Canada” at the Manitoba Moose
Hockey game on November 5. The choir members were a very dedicated group and did an amazing
job at the game. Thank you to all of the parents and family members who came out and supported
their children at this event. The support of such a large group of people made the evening so much
more special for the students especially when they heard the cheers from their fans during the intro-
duction of the Daerwood School Choir.
All classes are now busy preparing for “Santa’s Holiday Playlist”, our Winter Concert. This year we
/ind that Santa’s favorite Christmas album is ruined. The North Pole gang decides to introduce Santa
to their music with the help of iPods, playlists, headsets and docking stations! The elves are enjoying
their Motown tunes, while the reindeer kick up their country western heels. Crystal Snow/lake is
heading for Broadway and the toy soldiers are a-rockin’ and a-rollin’. Join the holiday hi-tech fun and
discover what ends up on Santa’s holiday playlist!
Please join us at Daerwood School’s Winter Concert on December 15 at 2:00 and 6:30 p.m. The Stu-
dent Services door on the North side of the school will open at 5:45 p.m. allowing families to line up
inside out of the cold. We ask that parents supervise their children until they are able to go to their
classrooms at 6:00 p.m. There will be an opportunity to contribute to a Silver Collection at that time.
Money collected will go towards the cost of the sound system for the concert as well as any instru-
ments and materials needed for the music program.
Thank you,
Mrs. Simpson
A very special thanks to Selkirk Daily Bread Soup Kitchen as well as parents, for all of their
generous donations, both monetary and or supplies to our Breakfast program! A big thank you to Mrs. C and our students for helping Mrs.
Loutit out some mornings.
In the event of extreme cold weather, bus transportation will be cancelled at a temperature of
–40C or combined temperature and wind chill of –45C or greater, as per LSSD policy. Once there are
no buses running, classes are cancelled for all students.
We are now moving into the holiday season and this is the time we think of those less fortunate than ourselves. As a school we are planning to make a donation to the Selkirk Food Bank therefore we are encouraging all our students to bring in at least one or more non-
perishable food items that will be put under our tree. Our donations to the Food Bank will be
delivered on, December 16th.
The following are examples of items that we would like to collect:
Cereal/oatmeal, canned salmon or tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned baked beans, canned soups, canned cranberry sauce, canned meats, packages of noodles, crackers, juice, jello/pudding, candy or cookies, tea or coffee, potatoes, bread, package stuff-ing, jam or honey, peanut butter, pasta and pasta sauce, package mac & cheese, sugar, cake mixes, hot chocolate, pancake mix, syrup, mixed nuts, canned gravy (expired food cannot be accepted).
We thank you in advance for your generous donations. We are hoping to make a
difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
