India out of US’ developing nations list for trade benefits

● Ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit on

February 24-25, the US removed India from

its list of developing countries that are exempt

from investigations into whether they harm

American industry with unfairly subsidised

exports.

● The United States Trade Representative

(USTR) eliminated a host of countries

including Brazil, Indonesia, Hong Kong, South

Africa and Argentina.

● The US removed India from the list on

account of it being a G-20 member and

having a share of 0.5% or more of world

trade.

● India’s share in global exports was 1.67% in

2018. In global imports, it was 2.57%.

to host a five-day national winter games event

from 7th March under the banner of Khelo India.

● Khelo India is an initiative of the Government of

India to strengthen the sports ecosystem by

encouraging mass participation and promotion of

excellence.

● There will be 30 events under five major

activities- snowboarding, snow skiing, cross

country, snow show in which 800 players from

across India would participate.

● While on the side-lines, snow cycling and other

games will be held for the local children.

UP govt brings Ground Water Act-2020 to improve ground water levels

● Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister chaired a state

cabinet meeting where the Ground Water Act-

2020 meant to improve the falling groundwater

level was approved.

● Under the act, registration will be mandatory to

install submersible pumps.

● The domestic users and farmers will not have to

pay any fee; an online registration facility will also

be available.

● Rainwater harvesting system has also been

made mandatory in all private and government

schools and colleges.

● In the urban areas, if a landlord installs a

submersible pump to build a house larger than

300 sqm area, then it will be necessary to install

rainwater harvesting system.

● It will be mandatory for boring companies to get

their registration done.

• उत्तर प्रदेश के मुख्यमोंत्री ने एक राज्य कैलबनेट की

● The cabinet has also made provisions

for punishment and fine against those

who contaminate the groundwater level.

● If a person is caught for the first time

while polluting the groundwater level,

then there will be a provision of

punishment from 6 months up to 1 year

and penalty of Rs 2 lakhs to Rs 5 lakhs.

● If caught for the second time, there will

be a penalty of Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 10

lakhs and a punishment ranging from 2

years to 5 years.

● If a person is caught for the third time,

then he will face punishment from 5

years to 7 years and penalty from Rs 10

lakhs to Rs 20 lakhs.

official name for the disease caused by the new

coronavirus is Covid-2019.

● It comes after the death toll from the virus passed

one thousand. Tens of thousands of people have

been infected.

● The word coronavirus refers to the group of

viruses it belongs to.

● Researchers have been calling for an official

name to avoid confusion and stigmatisation of

any group or country.

• The virus will now be called “COVID-19”;

• The WHO, in consultation and collaboration with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), has identified the best practices for naming new human diseases.

• These best practices apply to those new diseases that can be classified as an infection, syndrome, or disease of humans; a disease that has never been recognised before in humans; has potential health impact and in those cases where no disease name is established in common usage.

As per the WHO, “severe” should be used only for those diseases that have

a very high initial case fatality rate. “Novel” can be used to indicate a new

pathogen of a previously known type. In the case of the novel coronavirus,

“recognising that this term will become obsolete if other new pathogens of

that type are identified,” the WHO has now changed its name.
