● The Monetary Policy Committee of India is responsible for fixing the benchmark interest rate in India.

The meetings of the Monetary Policy Committee are held at least 4 times a year and it publishes its

decisions after each such meeting.

● The committee comprises six members - three officials of the Reserve Bank of India and three

external members nominated by the Government of India. They need to observe a "silent period"

seven days before and after the rate decision for "utmost confidentiality". The Governor of Reserve

Bank of India is the chairperson ex officio of the committee. Decisions are taken by majority with the

Governor having the casting vote in case of a tie. The current mandate of the committee is to

maintain 4% annual inflation until 31 March 2021 with an upper tolerance of 6% and a lower

tolerance of 2%.

● The Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 was amended by Finance Act (India), 2016 to constitute MPC

which will bring more transparency and accountability in fixing India's Monetary Policy. The

monetary policy are published after every meeting with each member explaining his opinions. The

committee is answerable to the Government of India if the inflation exceeds the range prescribed for

three consecutive months

WHO calls for USD 675m in donations to fight novel coronavirus

डबू्लएिओ ने नोवेल कोरोनोवायरस से लडने के दलए िान में USD 675 दमदलयन का आह्वान दकया

• The World Health Organization has called for 675

million US dollar in donations for a plan to fight the

novel coronavirus, mainly through investment in

countries considered particularly "at risk".

• WHO chief Tedros Adhanom said at a news

conference in Geneva that they are launching a

strategic preparedness and response plan and

requesting 675 million dollar to fund the plan for

the next three months.

• Mr Tedros said 60 million US dollar of the funds

would be for WHO operations while the remainder

would go to countries requiring assistance to guard

against the deadly virus.

• WHO was sending 500,000 masks and 40,000

respirators to 24 countries from its warehouses in

Dubai and Accra.

• Tedros also hailed a 100 million dollar donation

from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

announced earlier for virus testing, treatment and

vaccine research.

• दवश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन ने नोवेल कोरोनवायरस से लडने की

योजना के दलए मुख्य रूप से "जोखखम में" माना जाने वाले

िेशों में दनवेश के माध्यम से, िान में 675 दमदलयन

India becomes second largest steel producer of Crude Steel

• As per World Steel Association data,

India became the second largest steel

producer of crude steel after China in

2018 and 2019, by replacing Japan.

• India’s crude steel production in 2018

was at 109.3 MT, an increase of 7.7 per

cent from 101.5 MT in 2017.

• China remains number one with 920

million tonnes of production in 2018 and

996.3 million tonnes in 2019.

• The United States and South Korea rank

fourth and fifth respectively.

• दवश्व इस्पात संघ के आंकडों के अनुसार,

जापान की जगह भारत 2018 और 2019 में

िीन के बाि कचे्च इस्पात का िूसरा सबसे

बडा इस्पात उत्पािक बन गया।

• 2018 में भारत का कचे्च इस्पात का

• UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay

will be felicitated on the occasion.

• UNESCO declared the Walled City of Jaipur

world heritage site in July last year which is

famous for its grid plan-based architecture

and buildings constructed with the pink

façade.

• The historic walled city of Jaipur in

Rajasthan, was founded in 1727 AD under

the patronage of Sawai Jai Singh II.

• It serves as the capital city of the culturally-

rich state of Rajasthan.

Flipkart shuts down fashion portal Jabong, to focus fully on Myntra

● E-commerce marketplace Flipkart is downing

shutters on Jabong and the portal is now

redirecting the users to the Myntra website.

● Walmart-owned Flipkart had acquired Jabong

for $70 million in 2016.

● Earlier in July 2019, Flipkart had said that it

had started to cut a significant chunk of its

marketing expenditure in Jabong and

redirecting its users towards Myntra by

providing discounts.

● Flipkart had acquired fashion e-commerce

platform Myntra in May 2014.

● Soon after the Walmart acquisition in

November 2018, Flipkart merged both Myntra

and Jabong

year, increased to 145 kg and took a lead of 1

kg over R.V. Rahul in snatch.

● He later broke the 187 kg record on his last

● Lapung, from Arunachal Pradesh, a former

national champion weighing 69 kg, won a

national title after four years.

Cabinet approves amendment to bring cooperative banks under RBI

कैदबनेट ने RBI के तहत सहकारी बैंकों को लाने के दलए संशोधन को मंजूरी िी- Business Today

● The Union Cabinet approved amendments to

the Banking Regulation Act to bring

cooperative banks under the regulatory

mechanism of Reserve Bank of India.

● The government has taken this move in the

wake of the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-

operative (PMC) Bank crisis.

● The move will ensure greater accountability

and transparency in the functioning of

cooperative banks.

● The cooperative banks need to fulfill

regulatory requirements set for scheduled

commercial banks.

● As per the new proposals, cooperative banks

will need to take RBI approval for the

appointment of CEO and do audits as per RBI

guidelines.

• कें िीय मंदिमंडल ने भारतीय ररजवि बैंक के

दनयामक तंि के तहत सहकारी बैंकों को लाने के

दलए बैंदकंग दवदनयमन अदधदनयम में संशोधन को

IOC signs first term contract for importing Russian crude oil

आईओसी ने रूसी कचे्च तेल के आयात के दलए पहले अनुबंध पर हस्ताक्षर दकए- PTI

● Indian Oil Corp (IOC) signed first term

contract for importing Russian crude oil as the

world''s third largest energy consumer looks

to diversify its sources away from the volatile

Middle East.

● IOC signed the contract to import up to 2

million tonne of Urals grade crude oil from

Rosneft of Russia.

● India is 83 per cent dependent on imports to

meet its oil needs.

● Two-thirds of the imports come from the

Middle East, Iraq being the biggest supplier

followed by Saudi Arabia.

● The crude oil, being sourced under the

contract, will be loaded in Suezmax vessels at

Novorossiysk port of Russia and will come to

India bypassing Straits of Hormuz.

• The Union Environment Ministry has published a draft notification that effectively prohibits users from installing membrane-based water purification, mainly reverse osmosis, systems in their homes if the water has been sourced from a supply that meets the Bureau of Indian Standards’ drinking water norms.

• कें िीय पयािवरण मंिालय ने एक मसौिा अदधसूिना प्रकादशत की है जो उपयोगकतािओं कोप्रभावी ढंग से दिल्ली-आधाररत (membrane-based) जल शोधन स्थादपत करने से रोकती है, मुख्य रूप से अपने घरों में उत्क्रम परासरण (Reverse osmosis (RO)) , अगर पानी कीआपूदति भारतीय मानक बू्यरो के पीने के पानी के मानिंडों को पूरा करती है।

• Current BIS regulations consider 500 mg/litre—1,200 mg/l of total dissolved solids, which consists of salts and some organic matter, as acceptable though there is no lower limit.

परासरण (Osmosis) िो दभन्न सान्द्रता वालेघोलों के बीि होनेवाली एक दवशेष प्रकार कीदवसरण दक्रया है जो एक अधिपारगम्य दिल्लीके द्वारा होती है। इसमें दवलायक (घोलक) केअणु कम सान्द्रता वाले घोल से अदधकसान्द्रता वाले घोल की ओर गदत करते हैं।[1] यह एक भौदतक दक्रया है दजसमें घोलक केअणु दबना दकसी बाह्य उजाि के प्रयोग केअधिपारगम्य दिल्ली से होकर गदत करते हैं

Reverse Osmosis : A process by which a solvent passes through a porous membrane in the direction opposite to that for natural osmosis when subjected to a hydrostatic pressure greater than the osmotic pressure.

उत्क्रम परासरण (Reverse osmosis (RO)) जल शोधन की एक तकनीक है जोपीने के पानी से आयनो,ं अवांदछत अणुओंऔर बडे कणों को हटाने के दलए प्रयुक्त होतीहै। इसके दलए एक [अधिपारगम्य दिल्ली] काउपयोग दकया जाता है। उत्क्रम परासरणकराने के दलए [परासरण िाब] के दवपरीतदिशा में एक वाह्य िाब लगाना पडता है।

Reason of ban

• The NGT had ordered a ban on RO filters on the grounds that they wasted water and that, in the process of removing salts, they often deprived drinking water of essential salts.

• एनजीटी ने इस आधार पर आरओ दफल्टर पर प्रदतबंध लगाने का आिेश दिया था दकवे पानी को बबािि करते हैं और लवण को हटाने की प्रदक्रया में, वे अक्सर आवश्यकलवणों के पीने के पानी से अलग कर िेते हैं।

• RO while useful in reducing salts does not tackle bacterial agents or trace chemicals and manufacturers often claim that additional filtration is required to deliver potable water.
