The third and final “Meet Me in the Street” concert for 2012 will be held on September 13 and will feature The Castaways — a band with nearly 50 years of experience in the beach music industry. From their begin-ning in Durham in 1961, The Castaways have been pleasing audiences with their unique flavor of beach, soul, and rock n’ roll music.

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce hosts these free, local concerts which are presented by sponsors Harris Incorporated of Hender-son and Budweiser.

The 2012 “Meet Me in the Street” concert series started out with a few surprises. The first event, scheduled for April 26, had to be postponed due to inclement weather and was rescheduled for May 11. That event, which featured local band, The Konnection, turned out to be a perfect evening with food, fun and a dancing crowd.

The second event was held on May 31 with The Entertainers commanding the stage. Again

the weather cooperated with temperatures well into the 90s.

These concerts are made possible by our many Chamber-member sponsors. Gold spon-sors for this year are BB&T, Maria Parham Medical Center and Toyota of Henderson. Silver Sponsors are AA Self Storage, AAA Gas & Appliance Com-pany, Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill, P&G Petcare, Philips Optimum, Progress Energy and Satterwhite Point Marina.

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce an-nounced 20 graduates from its annual Leadership Vance program.

Leadership Vance is designed to create a group of informed and dedicated leaders who will contribute to the community. The program is organized into 12 sessions, which began on Feb. 16 with an orientation breakfast at Vance-Granville Community College and concluded on June 19 with a graduation ceremony and dinner at Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill. Participants are exposed to various aspects of Henderson and Vance County, specifically in regard to city and county government, health and community resources, economic development, agriculture and natural resources, history, me-dia, criminal justice and law.

The 2012 Leadership Vance Class completed its sessions on June 7 with the group hard at work on the required Commu-nity Service project which is se-lected, organized and completed by class participants.

This year’s class spent the day building six raised, wooden plant beds for the children at Clarke Elementary. Teachers will use them to show students how to plant food crops so that they learn first hand that food does not originate in a grocery store. The experience will also likely allow students to prepare and cook the items as well. The plan was originated by Pete Burgess with the support of Farm Bureau, who wrote a note of thanks to the class for their time and efforts.

On June 19, the class cel-ebrated their graduation with a dinner at Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill which offered them a choice of 6 oz. filet,

8 oz. ribeye, chicken breast, or salmon along with all the trimmings and dessert. After a delicious meal for graduates and their guests, diplomas were awarded for completing the five-month course. Program manager Rachel Hedrick was presented an autographed piece of granite from Greystone

Quarry with the words “You Rock” and signatures of all the class members as a memento. The event ended with a pictorial Powerpoint presentation featur-ing memories and highlights from the five-month class.

Participants in this year’s class included: Sherri Shontiee Alston (Vance Co. Dept. of

Social Services); Catherine Blankenship (Maria Parham Medical Center); Kelly Bondu-rant (Vance-Granville Commu-nity College); Michael Bobbitt (self-employed); Porcha Brooks (Vance County Tax admin-istrator); Thomas Hampton (P&G Pet Care); Freda Hawley (Walmart Distribution Center

No. 6091); Reggie Hicks (Union Bank & Trust Co.); Brian John-son (BB&T); Jerome Levisy (Boys & Girls Club of N.C.); Ayana Lewis (Abria’s Chase Foundation); Stuart Litvin (Hen-derson-Vance County Economic Development Commission); Brian Marshburn, (BB&T); Tonya Moore (KARTS); Me-

sina Reddish (Granville-Vance District Health Dept.); Jessica Rice (AIM High Athletics & Personal Training); Sara Ru-dolph (Franklin-Vance-Warren Opp., Inc.); Desmond Thomp-son (Vance County Schools); Matthew Todd, (Vance County Farm Bureau); and Kanika Tur-rentine (Infinite Possibilities).

BB&T hosted a Business After Hours at their location at 632 Dabney Drive on July 31. The event was held to celebrate the company’s more than 90 years of service to the local community and to thank the community for its continued support. Beer, wine and a variety of foods were served as part of the celebra-tion. BB&T continues to be a major sponsor of Chamber events including the Annual Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament for which they have been the presenting sponsor for the last 14 years.

A joint Business After Hours was held on June 28 along the streets of Down-town Henderson. The event was hosted by Rosemyr Cor-poration, Vance County Arts Council and Interiors and Gifts Too. First stop for this event was in beautiful Emrose Park where guests registered for door prizes and sampled a variety of ice creams with all the fixings. From there, guests meandered next door to the Arts Council facility where champagne and finger foods were served while tour-ing the gallery and its many

fabulous works on display. Two other tours were offered to showcase the new upstairs apartments recently com-pleted by Rosemyr (across the street from the park) and the apartments available above Interiors and Gifts Too. Hors d’oeuvres and bever-ages were available while browsing through Interiors and Gifts Too. Finally music punctuated the evening back at Emrose Park where guests gathered for the door prize drawings. Emrose Corpora-tion (a separate corporation managed by The Rosemyr

Corporation) is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year.

Another joint Business After Hours held on May 17 at 857 S. Beckford Drive was hosted by Coldwell Banker Advantage — Hen-derson, Prim Development & Rentals, Edward Jones - Jeff Perry, Sylvan Learning Cen-ter of Henderson and New Republic Savings Bank. The event began with registration at Prim Residential. Here, guests also registered for door prizes and heard opening remarks while sampling a variety of beverages. From

there, the crowd proceeded to Coldwell Banker Advantage where they were served hors d’oervres. Drawings for door prizes were held at the Sylvan Learning Center facility and during the course of the evening, representatives for Edward Jones (Jeff Perry) and New Republic Savings Bank were on hand for information.

Sleep Inn will be hosting a Business After Hours at their location on 18 Market St. (right off of Zeb Robinson Road) on August 16, 2012 from 5:30-7 p.m. A ribbon-cutting will take place at 5:30

p.m. at the beginning of the event to celebrate their newly renovated facility. Tours and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. Please RSVP to the Chamber at [email protected] or (252) 438-8414.

There are only a few opportunities remaining for Business After Hours in 2012. If your company is in-terested in hosting one, please call the Chamber at (252)438-8414 or e-mail Membership Director Rachel Hedrick at [email protected] for information and planning assistance.

Pete Burgess, representing Vance County Farm Bureau proposed this project in response to a request made by Leadership Vance for a community service project. He did so in order to acquaint elementary school students with how food is grown before it is processed and sent to the grocery stores for purchase. The students will be involved in planting, growing and harvesting the food that is grown. The class built six raised plant beds at Clarke Elementary in order to teach them about agriculture and where food comes from. VGCC built the gazebo and Farm Bureau provided the funding. While weather experts are predicting a “near-normal” 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, last year’s Hurricane Irene is a reminder of the erratic and devastating nature of tropi-cal storms. The six-month season, which began June 1, typically peaks between August and October. Now is a good time to put a disaster preparedness plan in place to protect your employees and your busi-ness.

The U.S. Small Busi-ness Administration and Agility Recovery Solu-tions recently hosted a free webinar giving tips on how to prepare for hur-ricane season and each month they will host a free webinar providing business continuity strategies. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the Gulf Coast or the Up-per Midwest — all kinds of risks exist, and small businesses are particularly vulnerable.

Here are a few things that the administration sug-gests that you can do, at

no cost, to jump-start your business continuity plan:

DETERMINE YOUR GREATEST RISK POTENTIAL

It might come from wind damage or inland flooding that typically follows a tropical storm’s heavy rains. Your busi-ness could suffer finan-cial losses due to road and bridge closings in the aftermath of a hur-ricane. Power outages are a major threat, especially to businesses in the food and hospitality industries. What would happen if you had to shut down your business for several days? Look at the build-ing where you do business — inside and out — and assess the risks. If you do this early enough, you’ll have time to do structural upgrades — like impact resistant doors and win-dows — that can prevent possible future storm damage.

REVIEW YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE

Contact your agent to find out if your policy is

adequate for your needs. Consult with a business insurance expert to advise you on the right coverage for your situation. When buying insurance, ask “How much can I afford to lose?” It’s a good idea to know the value of your proper-ty. Floods are the leading cause of natural disaster losses in the U.S., accord-ing to the U.S. Geological Survey, and many proper-ty insurance policies don’t cover flood damage.

CALCULATE THE COST OF BUSINESS INTERRUPTIONS

FOR ONE WEEK, ONE MONTH AND SIX MONTHS

Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able investigate insurance options or build a cash reserve that will allow your company to function during the post-disaster recovery phase. It’s also a good idea to develop professional

relationships with alter-native vendors, in case

your primary contractor can’t service your needs. Place occa-sional orders with them so they regard you as an ac-tive customer when you need them.

BUILD A CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS PLAN

Establish an e-mail alert system. Make sure you have primary and secondary email addresses for your employees, and everyone you do business with. Create a Facebook page, and use Twitter to keep the public aware you’re still in busi-ness and in the process of recovering after the disaster.

CONSIDER A TELEWORK POLICY.

Prepare for the possibil-ity that employees won’t be able to get to work by

developing an emergency telework policy. Read “How to Make Telework Work for your Small Business” for more infor-mation.

For more information on disaster recovery and how to best prepare for various types of disasters, go to the administration’s website at sba.gov.

For the past five years, the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce and the Vance County Depart-ment of Social Services have been partners in the STEPS to Self Sufficiency and Job Boost program.

This program is a free three-week course designed to help unemployed individuals gain knowledge in how to become more employable and competitive in today’s mar-ket. Some of these individuals have become unemployed through no fault of their own as a result of layoffs, busi-nesses closing, etc. and may have worked only one job for several years.

The program helps enhance their interviewing skills, job searching tech-niques, resume preparation, and other skills necessary for securing a job. Participants are also given the nationally recognized Work Keys Cer-tification, which is a test on

Reading, Math and Locating Information. This skills test is also provided free of charge through a partnership with Vance-Granville Community College.

Individuals can place in one of three categories: Bronze, Silver or Gold. Employers can use this as an additional tool to recognize and hire highly qualified indi-viduals. Other benefits of hir-ing these participants include a free criminal background check and a Work Opportu-nity Tax Credit.

The current calendar year has seen 60 participants. Of these 60 participants, 38 of them have gained employ-ment in the local area.

For more information about the program or to have a presentation made to your business, contact Connie Ragland at the Chamber at (252) 438-8414.
