On July 19, Governor Bev Perdue came to Vance County to assist in making the announcement that solar panel producer Sem- prius, will build a solar cell manufacturing facil- ity in Vance County. In addition, incentives that helped secure the commit- ment from the company stipulate that they must create 256 jobs over the next five years. Governor Perdue said of the announcement, “This is a big day for Vance County, and this is a big day for North Carolina. This company is on the cutting edge in the solar energy field, and we welcome them to North Carolina, the smart-grid capital of the world.” The facility is set for de- velopment at an existing building adjacent to the Triangle North business park outside of Henderson. Upgrades to the building are slated to begin in Au- gust, and will be boosted by a $550,000 grant from the N.C. Rural Center. The plant is expected to be operational a year from now. The Semprius facil- ity will produce highly concentrated photovoltaic modules that combine tiny solar cells with low-cost, ef- ficient optics to concentrate sunlight and multiply it by more than 1,000 times. Servpro celebrates 10 years of serviceto three counties

Servpro of Franklin, Vance and Granville Counties is celebrating their 10th year in business.

Keith and Melissa Paul opened the busi-ness in October 2000 after two weeks of intense training at Servpro Corporate, in Gal-latin, TN. Keith grew up in Warrenton where he worked in Eddie Clayton’s tire and repair business (Clayton is his uncle). This helped inspire Keith to one day open a business of his own.

As an adult, Keith worked for Sprint and Alltel in sales and customer service which gave him valuable knowledge and skills in running his own business. Melissa’s back-ground is in the medical field as a physical therapist in a variety of settings. She grew up in many states including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Indiana and Oklahoma.

Keith and Melissa started Servpro of Franklin, Vance and Granville Counties out of their home, with three kids under the age of 4. Now their kids are working in the business in the summer and during school breaks.

Servpro of Franklin, Vance and Granville Counties is a franchise system with over 1600 locations across the country. The company provides fire and water damage restora-tion, sewage/ biohazard clean-up, carpet and upholstery cleaning, air duct cleaning, mold remediation and emergency services.

Keith holds Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Cleaning (IICRC) certificates for water damage restoration and applied structural drying. He is also a certified mold remediator. The company currently has seven employees.

According to company CEO Joe Carr, these high-performance solar panels may be the most ef-ficient in the world for converting sunlight to electricity. “We will build what is really the high-tech portion of the system here,” Carr said. “It is what I call the ‘secret sauce’ of our success. That will al-ways be done in Vance County.”

Carr also pointed out several advantages beyond the financial incentives that singled out Vance County as the ideal location for

the company to build its pilot manufacturing plant. Those advantages included proximity to I-85 and the company’s home base in Durham, workforce train-ing opportunities with Vance-Granville Community College, an available workforce and Triangle North’s offering of room for growth.

“I think Semprius coming to Vance County will cause us to see an economic churn of jobs,” said Bill Edwards, Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce president. “The jobs at Semprius will require skilled training. When people within the county get the training, they will leave a

lower position vacant, which can be filled by someone else within the county.”

The average salary at Sem-prius will be $45,565 compared to the current county average of $30,004. According to Edwards,

the first 63 positions filled at Semprius will be specialized posi-tions, such as engineers and re-searchers. Those hired after that will be trained. Part of the incen-tive package given to Semprius for locating in Vance County is

$435,200 for the training of em-ployees through Vance-Granville Community College.

In addition, the plant is expected to draw $120 million in investment to the region, accord-ing to company statements.

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Com-merce, Vance County Schools, and Vance-Gran-ville Community College recently co-sponsored the 24th year of School of Excellence from June 14 through June 17.

School of Excellence is a leadership develop-ment program for rising tenth graders from these local area high schools: Crossroads Christian School, Kerr-Vance Academy, Northern Vance High School, Southern Vance High School, Vic-tory Christian School and Vance County Early Col-lege High School. Students are selected by the admin-istration of each school based on academic rank-ing and proven leader-ship ability. The program utilizes team building exercises, job shadowing opportunities and speak-ers from the community. It also offers leadership building activities.

Participants in the 2011 School of Excellence are: Northern Vance High School: Brenda Arias-Garcia, Angelica Durham, Taylor Evans, Dana Har-ris, James Hawkins, Kath-erine Jarrell, Whitney Johnson, Gray Parrish, Mel’leeah Robinson, Kayla Royster, Luke Trull and Ashley Williams. South-ern Vance High School: Victoria Allgood, Stanton Fields, Simone Grant, Gregory Grissom, Kristen Lawrence, Marykey Moro-zumi, Sara Ramsey, Axis Tatum, Kaitlyn Walsh, Anissa Williams, Alvonte Yancey and Taylor Young.

Vance County Early Col-lege High School: William Douglas and Amy Sut-ton. Kerr-Vance Acad-emy: Beverly Foster and Rebecca Ross. Crossroads Christian School: Shellie Hughes and Johnna Wille. Victory Christian School: Elaina Araujo and Benja-min Layton.

Presenting sponsor for this year’s program was Walmart Distri-bution Center #6091. Other sponsors and hosts included: ACTS of Hen-derson, Carolina Country Snacks, Franklin Brothers Nursery and Greenhouses,

Harperprints, Henderson Police Department, H. Leslie Perry Memorial Li-brary, Lifeline Ministries, Satterwhite Point Marina, Vance County 911, Vance County Sheriff’s Depart-ment, Vance-Granville Community College, Vul-can Materials and West-ern Vance High School.

The organizers would also like to recognize the help of the following fa-cilitators in team-building activities: Mark Lawhorne and James Realon, Linda Fletcher, Spence Bailey, Dr. Randy Parker, Cathe-rine and Scott Hughes and

Joy Suther. A graduation celebration and luncheon was held for participants and their families on June

17 at the VGCC Civic Cen-ter. Walmart Distribution Center #6091 sponsored the graduation luncheon.

On June 9, the Hen-derson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce and the Granville County Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the North Carolina Depart-ment of Labor hosted the 2011 Safety Banquet for businesses in Vance and Granville Counties. The banquet was held at the Vance-Granville Com-munity College South Campus.

North Carolina Labor Commissioner Cherie Ber-

ry addressed the crowd of approximately 70, mostly industrial business owners and employees, before handing out the awards.

Commissioner Berry touted the importance of knowing our co-workers in order to support and watch out for them if they might be having a “bad day” because of physical or personal issues.

“This could go far in preventing a potential ac-cident” said Berry.

Local employers and

their employees were recognized with awards for maintaining exceptionally safe working conditions for an extended period of time during 2010.

The Kennametal Henderson Plant won a Gold Award for the 24th consecutive year.

To qualify for a gold award, the accident rate (rate of days away from work and job transfer or restriction) must be at least 50% below the indus-try average.

Volunteers brave the heat to check ID’s for the Chamber’s first 2011 Meet Me in the Street.

“The band brought a fresh sound and great entertainment to this popu-lar venue,” said Bill Edwards, Cham-ber President. Harris Incorporated of Henderson along with Budweiser is the presenting sponsor of the concert series again this year.

The second concert was held on July 14 with The Konnection Band and the third and final concert for the season is on Sept. 1 with The Holiday Band.

Community Workforce Solutions, Chester’s and Pizza Hut served up hot

dogs, chicken and pizza for the hungry mob while Coca-Cola and Harris Incorpo-rated took care of their thirsts. Wine and T-shirts were also available for attendees to purchase.
