The Sanctuary Light in the Church
is burning in memory of
Mary Ellen Kenny
By: Barbara & Ray Cantwell
Today, Sunday January 19th, we will break from our reading of Matthew’s Gospel to read from John’s Gospel. (Matthew is the primary Gospel for our current
liturgical year which is Year A). We heard Matthew’s account of Jesus’ baptism last Sunday, on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Today, we will hear John the Baptist’s testimony about Jesus as found in John’s Gospel. John’s Gospel differs from the other Gospels because John does not describe Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist. Instead, John the Baptist announces that he knows that Jesus is the Son of God.
The Gospel relates that John the Baptist sees Jesus approaching and cries out, giving witness about who Jesus is. John the Baptist gives testimony
saying that he saw the Spirit descend upon Jesus. It is by this sign of the descending how John the Baptist knew that Jesus was the one who is to come after him. John the Baptist uses two titles for Jesus that are familiar to us. John calls Jesus the “Lamb of God” and the “Son of God.” By using these titles, John the Baptist identifies Jesus’ ultimate purpose: to redeem sinful humanity. John the Baptist’s testimony about who Jesus is clearly distinguishes John’s baptism from the Baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John baptizes with water; Jesus, says John the Baptist, ’will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ John also puts his practice of baptism in the context of Jesus’ ministry. The purpose of John’s baptism was to make Jesus known to Israel; to prepare the people for His arrival in their midst and the Kingdom that he will bring with him. John the Baptist’s sense of purpose is plainly known in this reading: he baptized in order to prepare for and make known the ministry of the One who was to follow. John’s witness is an excellent example of what it means to be a disciple. By our Baptism, we are called to make Jesus known to all the world by our words and by the witness of our lives.

FIRST COMMUNION PROGRAM: The First Communion of the children in our parish is an event of great joy for our whole community! We all share the joyful anticipation of the families whose children will soon begin their preparation to receive Jesus in Communion for the first time. There will be many opportunities for the parish community members to take part in special ways in the First Communion preparation. But, all of us have a mission to support the children and families in their spiritual journey by offering them the witness of our faith and prayer. In the weeks to come we will let you know how you can welcome the children and their families and help them sense the joy of belonging to our community. All parents who have expressed an interest in taking part in the First Communion program will attend an important meeting to help them reflect on the place of the Sacrament of Communion in their own lives and in the lives of their children.
