    ThisisanintroductiontoweavingchairseatswithDanishropecord.InthistutorialIwillbecoveringtheDanish"SplitRail"chair,butnotethatthereareseveraltypesofchairdesignsthatrequiredifferenttacticsinweavingthechairseat.

    Danishseatcordistreatedpaperthatistwistedintoathreeplyrope.Therearetwodifferenttypesofropecord"laced"and"unlaced."Lacedropecordismorelikeyourtypicalrope,wherethethreetwistedstrandscanbeplainlyseen.Inunlacedcord,thethreestrandsarenotasnoticeable.Bothtypesareapproximately1/8inchindiameterandabout180feetperpound.Thisisimportanttoknowbecausepapercordissoldbythepoundratherthanbythefoot.Eachchairtypicallyrequirestwopoundsofropecord.Inthischair,Iusedthelacedropecord.

    Ifyouareredoingachairthatalreadyhasaropecordseat,makesuretotakenoteoftheoriginaldetails,suchastheamountoftimesthecordiswrappedaroundtheframe.Standardchairshavea16inchx16inchframeandastandardmethodofwrapping,butsomechairshavea17inchfrontrailanda16inchbackrail.Youdon'tneedtoknowtheexactdimensionsofyourchair,butyoudoneedtoknowhowmanystrandsgofromsidetosideandhowmanystrandsgofronttoback.

    WhenremovingtheoldropecordDONOTremovetheoriginalnailsorhooks.Inmostcasesyouwillbesentahandfulofnewfastenersfromwhereyouorderyourpapercordfrom,buttheoriginalnailswillstillholdyourseatandgiveyou

    Step1:PrepareYourChair

    Beginpreparingyourchairbycuttingawayalltheoriginalropecord.Asyoucanseeinthispicture,Iremovedallthenails,whichisabigmistake.Thiswasmyfirstattemptatseatweaving,andwithallthenailsremoved,Ilosttheoriginalspacingfortheropecord.Alongwiththespacing,Ialsolostwheretheweavebeganandended.

    Itishelpfultakepicturesoftheoriginalweaveandtotakenotesonhowtheweavebeginsandends.

    Theweavehappensinthreestepsor"railwrappings"thefrontrail,thebackrailandthesidetoside.

  • Onceyourchairhasbeenprepped,thenextstepistowrapthefrontseatrail.Thefrontseatwrappingisimportantbecauseitcoverstheentirefrontrail,whileatthesametimeprovidingsupportforthesidetosideweave.

    Thefrontrailweavedoesn'tcarryfullweight,butitisthemostimportantstepoutofthethree.Typically,weavebreakagewilloccuronthisfrontrail.Whileweaving,remembertokeeptheweavetight,butnottootight.Alittlegiveisfine,buttoomuchgivewillcausesagging.

    Thefirststepinthisweaveistoremoveapproximately100feetofcordfromthespool.Tokeepthecordfromtangling,youcanwrapthecordaroundadowel.Tokeepthecordinplace,youcansplittheendofthedowelwithaknife,andplacethecordthroughthethesplit.Youcanthenwrapthecordaroundthedoweltopreventtangling.

    Next,beginontheleftsideofthefrontrailbytackingtheendoftheropecordtotheinsideofthisrail.Thecordwillgounder,andoverthefrontrail,andthenpulledacrossthelengthoftheseattothebackrail.Pullthecordoverthebackrailandtackontheinside.Thebackrailcordisthenloopedaroundahookandbroughtbackagaintothefrontrail.Repeatthisoncemoreandfinishbywrappingthefrontrail,spacedthesamewayasyouroriginalchair.Asyoucanseefromthispicture,Iwrappedtheropecordabouttenmoretimesbeforerepeatingthelooptothebackrail.Repeatthesestepsuntilyoureachtheothersideofyourchair.

    Useawoodblocktopushthecordtogetherbeforetackingtokeepthewrapastightaspossible.

    Whendone,tackthecordundertheinsideofthefrontrailtofinish.Thebackrailwillhavewoodshowingatthispoint,whereasthefrontwillbecompletelywrapped.

  • Thisistheeasiestwrappingbecauseitisnotloadbaringitispurelycosmetic.Inthisstep,youwillworkdirectlyfromthespooldonotcutanycord.Youaresimplycoveringthebarewoodwiththeropecord.Noneedtowrapfromthebackrailtothefrontrailinthisstep.

    Takethecordandtackthematerialtotheinsideleftedgeofthebackrail.Thenwraptheexposedareasonthebackrailuntilyoureachtherightside.Next,tackthematerialoffontheinsideedgeofthebackrail.Thespacingonthisstepshouldreflectthespacingonthefrontrailofthechair.

    Step4:StepThree:SidetoSide

  • Thisstepcanbethemostcomplicatedintheprocess.Itiscalledthesideweave.Beextracautiousduringthisstepbecausethecordcaneasilytangle.Typically,Idon'twrapthecordaroundadowelbecausetheareayou'llbeworkinginismuchtighterthanthefrontandbackrail.

    Unlikethefrontandbackrail,thesiderailhasanupperandalowerrail.Thisdoublerailfeatureiswhythischairstyleiscalledthe"DanishSplitRail."Remember,thissiderailweavecanbetricky.Youmayhavetorepeatthisstepafewtimesbeforegettingthecorrectlook.

    First,taketheremainingcordoffthespoolandtiethetwoendstogetherinaknotthatcanbeeasilyremovedwhenfinished.Becauseyouareweavingtwopiecesofropecordatthesametime,tyingthisknotkeepsthematerialeven.Taketheendoftheropecordthatdoesnothavetheknotandtackthelooptotheinnerleftsideofthefrontrail.Youwillbeginyourweaveontheleftsideandworkyourwayovertotheright.

    Taketheknottedendsandweaveoverandunderthealreadyestablishedfrontrailweave.Note,youwillwanttoendyourweaveovernotunder.Whenattheoppositeside,taketheendsofthecordandloopthemthroughthesplittotheinsidepartofthechair,betweentheupperandlowersiderails.Next,taketheknottedendofthecordfromunderthelowersiderail,andpulluppasttheuppersiderailtotheseat.Youmaynowbeginyourweavebacktotheleftsideofthechairgoingoverandunderthefrontrailweave.

    Whenyoureachtheleftside,pullthecordovertheupperandlowersiderails,andwrapthesectionofbarewoodonthelowerrailthatsitsexposednexttothecordthatyoujustwrapped(thatgoesaroundboththeupperandlowerside
