Executive Summary
A majority of user respondents continue to view Mobile Business Intelligence as
critical or important unchanged from June 2010
The priority platform for Mobile Business Intelligence is the Apple iPad, followed
by the BlackBerry. This represents a shift from 2010 when the iPhone was moredominant.
iPad interest last year has translated into significant deployments, with a modest
increase in the iPhone and decreased usage of BlackBerry and Windows phones
as platforms for Mobile Business Intelligence. Growing interest is present for
Android devices especially tablets.
Overall Mobile BI user penetration has increased over June 2010. However, the
12 month forecast remains the same as in June 2010. Plans for 24 months out
are more ambitious than last year.
70% of respondents expect a quarter and 25% expect half of their user-base to
utilize BI exclusively, through mobile devices, within 2 years.KPI Monitoring grew sharply as a critical feature, with more modest growth in
demand for advanced features such as Guided Analysis and Dashboard
Assembly
The demand for executive use of Mobile BI further solidified its top spot (top
priority within ~ 80% of organizations) with a slight uptick in the requirement for
customers and suppliers.
Small and mid-sized organizations were more likely than larger enterprises to
serve Mobile BI with information from Software-as-a-Service BI applications.
The great majority of respondents expect data to reside on both - devices andservers
BI software vendors indicated that Mobile BI holds greater importance generally,
and believe it to be more critical than six months ago
Vendors have shifted in favor of Apples iPad tablet computer making it the single
top priority for Mobile BI application development.
The web browser (HTML) remains the most popular form of integration.
However, the use of SDKs has grown since June most notably for the iPad,
iPhone and BlackBerry
Vendor support for Alerting has improved since June, but had been surprisingly
limited. Advanced features such as write back and dashboard assembly will
be uncommon during 2011

Introduction:
In September 2010, Dresner Advisory Services published its landmark Mobile BI Market
Study. This report was based on a study of nearly 200 organizations from around the
globe. In it we explored the perceptions, intentions and realities surrounding Mobile
Business Intelligence from a number of perspectives and helped to shed light on an
emerging market dynamic.
During the ensuing six months from when we initially collected our study data (June-July
2010), the market for Mobile BI went through dramatic change: new platform entries
(e.g., Android tablets), evolved BI software offerings and increased user experience and
deployments. These changes, along with the suggestion of clientele, encouraged us to
update our research and document this phenomenon. The result is this Mobile BI
Market Study Update.
Method:To understand the changes afoot regarding Mobile BI, we re-surveyed a select group of
original respondents and examined differences from the initial study data. We also
conducted interviews with several of these organizations to get a deeper sense of their
plans and requirements. And, we asked several new questions which deal with
emerging issues surrounding Mobile BI.
As with the original study, we invited the vendor community to update their product
profiles with their latest mobile features - and have included updated rankings based on
mobile platform and BI feature support.
The result is a compelling set of findings, which highlights the rapidly changing
landscape for Mobile Business Intelligence.

Analysis of Findings:
In this updated study, we have focused predominately upon analyzing data utilizing the
overall sample. This was done for two reasons: 1) the cross-tab analysis from the
original study remains largely reliable and 2) sub-setting smaller samples may impact
the integrity of the analysis.
To understand the various criteria, below are the questions as asked on the user survey
(Table 1). These will also be important when viewing the customer profile tables later in
this report.

User Importance of Mobile Business Intelligence:
As with the original study, we asked our respondents to indicate the importance of
Mobile BI to their organizations and found that it remains largely unchanged from six
months ago (Figure 5). That this level of interest has been sustained, as organizations
have deployed Mobile BI to users, is both significant and encouraging.
And, as suggested in the original report, we believe that we are in the midst of a
fundamental paradigm shift for Business Intelligence.

Mobile BI Platform - User Priorities:
Since the original study, several new platforms have been announced and/or shipped.
These include the Samsung Galaxy, Windows 7 Phone, and RIM Playbook Tablet. This,
combined with a more experienced customer base, has contributed to shifts in platform
priorities. In examining these changes (Figure 6) we see a dramatic increase in interest
for the Apple iPad as a mobile Business Intelligence platform with decreased interest in
iPhone. At the same time, we notice stronger interest in Android devices: both phones
and tablets and improved interest in RIM devices likely due to a requirement to
leverage existing investments in mobile devices. Finally, demand for Microsoft Windows
as a BI platform has, seemingly, waned from six months ago.

Mobile BI Platform - User Penetration and Plans
If we examine Mobile BI Platform deployment and plans more closely (Figure 7) we
notice that the RIM Blackberry, with its huge installed base, remains the number one
Mobile BI platform. However, it appears to have declined in the past six months with
only modest interest in the RIM tablet. In contrast, we can see that the iPad intentions
from last year have turned into actual deployments, while those for the iPhone did not
fully materialize. Our data also suggests Android tablets will fare better than Android
phones as BI platforms - and that Windows has declined with a potential increase
later this year and next. In summary, if we consider stated use and intentions we must
conclude that the most prominent Mobile BI platforms for 2011 will be: RIM Blackberry,
Apple iPad and Apple iPhone.

User Penetration of Mobile Business Intelligence:
Since the original study, many of the surveyed organizations moved from planning to
deployment of Mobile BI. Not surprisingly, this has caused some reassessment of plans
(Figure 8) with an increase in overall penetration albeit at a lower rate than originally
anticipated. However, now with solid implementation experience, their ambitious plans
for 2011 and 2012 months are more convincing than before.

Exclusive Mobile BI Usage by 2013:
To better understand the commitment to Mobile BI, we asked a new question of our
respondents: For what percentage of users will mobile-based Business Intelligence
replace traditional BI within the next 2 years?
Their response is significant in that 97% of the sample told us that 25% or more of userswould consume BI applications and information exclusively through a mobile device
(Figure 9). And, nearly a quarter said it would be half of all BI users. This further
supports the idea of a BI paradigm shift over the course of the next two years.

Feature/Function Requirements
For this study update, we reexamined and compared the priority of eight different
Business Intelligence features and functions from June 2010 to December 2010. With
more practical experience during the past six months, these organizations have altered
their requirement for several features (See Figure 10).
Most notably, KPI Monitoring grew sharply as a critical feature. This is likely due to
the increased emphasis upon executives as critical users of Mobile BI. In addition, the
importance of Drag and Drop and Data Selection and Filtering increased due to a
practical understanding of Mobile BI applications, the devices themselves and the
interaction options they offer. And, a small increase in importance was noted for both
Guided Analysis and Dashboard Assembly reflecting the growth in more advanced
deployments and usage of Mobile BI.

User roles to be automated
While the intent to deliver Mobile BI to management and individual contributors
remained constant during this period, the requirement for executives (already the top
role) increased as did Board of Directors (Figure 11).
This increase can be attributed to both continued consumer and mass-marketexcitement surrounding tablet devices and genuine value that has been received using
Mobile BI. We have also been told by customers that they have re-focused upon
executive automation as their support is needed before rolling out Mobile BI to other
categories of users.
We also see an uptick in plans to delivering Mobile BI to both customers and suppliers.
This should not come as a surprise as organizations that have used Mobile BI internally
now understand the potential and value for including external constituencies.

Software as a Service and Mobile BI:
Another new question that we asked concerns the likelihood of organizations using
software-as-a-service applications as a source for Mobile BI (see Figure 12).
In general we see that the majority of respondents are much more likely to use existing
enterprise applications and infrastructure to support Mobile Business Intelligence.
It is notable, however, that only 24 percent suggested that they would be unlikely to
use SaaS to support Mobile BI.

Impact of Organization Size and Software as a Service for Mobile BI:
When we examine this data by size of organization (Figure 13), we can see that small
and mid-sized organizations (1 1000 employees) are substantially more receptive to
the idea of using cloud infrastructure and software-as-a-service Business Intelligence
applications as sources for Mobile BI initiatives and users. In contrast, larger
organizations are far less likely to use this approach.

The third and final new question that we asked for the updated study addresses the
issue of device versus server data storage.
This is an area of great interest as the security concerns (and in some cases
regulations) cause some organizations to restrict the download and storage of data onmobile devices.
However, as we can see in Figure 14, the great majority of respondents expect data to
reside on both - devices and servers - in support of Mobile BI.

Customer Profiles
As a part of the study update process, we chose a few customers to interview to better
understand their use of Mobile BI and how things had changed in six months. For each,
we have provided a summary and have created a table comparing their survey
responses from June and December, with highlights for key responses and changes.
Customer Profile: Large National Retailer
This national retailer has received substantial benefits from their BI investments in
recent years. BI continues to be a top initiative within the organization and Mobile BI is
an important component of that.
In June Mobile BI was deemed very important with an emphasis on executives and
middle managers. Their preferred device was the iPhone, followed by the BlackBerry.
Although Mobile BI remains very important, there has been a shift since June.
Operations senior management have set their sights on delivering Mobile BI to storemanagement using the iPad as the preferred platform. This was due to its ease of use
requiring minimal training. Their intent is to empower store management with key
metrics and information to run store operations without having to leave the floor.
Mobile devices will be fed from existing enterprise Business Intelligence applications
and systems and data may be stored on mobile devices. This customer expects that
within two years 75 percent of BI users will be exclusively mobile.
Phase one of their implementation delivers BI content as interactive dashboards via a
web browser. Phase two will involve device-specific (iPad) customer built applications.
A detailed description of this customers input can be found in Table 2.

Customer Profile: Governmental Agency:
A small core group within the business office of a governmental agency has been a
driver of business intelligence within that agency and is now advocating the use of
Mobile BI.
In June they shared that Mobile BI was deemed somewhat important. This haschanged today to very important, with substantially increased actual and planned user
penetration, since then. In addition, they expect 50% of BI users to use BI exclusively
on mobile devices within 24 months.
They believe that, during the past six months, users have come to realize that mobile
devices can be effective information appliances and can be used for more than just
email. As such, this group has been active in promoting the use of Mobile Business
Intelligence as an important mobile application.
Their initial target for Mobile BI was the individual contributor more so than any otherrole. Today this has shifted in favor of executives, with the realization that management
buy-in is needed before wide-scale rollouts can occur.
Their current implementation utilizes an existing BI software solution that delivers web-
based interactive reporting to mobile devices predominately BlackBerry phones. In
addition to using browser-based applications, data is not stored on devices as security
is paramount.
The RIM Blackberry phone is their primary focus, with some limited iPhone usage.
Budgetary limitations have slowed the acquisition of new mobile devices for the time
being. However, they would like to consider Windows devices as they are a primarily
Windows shop.
See Table 3 for a detailed comparison for this customer.

Updated Vendor Analysis and Rankings:
In addition to the detailed capability tables offered in the original DAS Mobile BI Study,
we have created vendor/product ranking charts, based on mobile platform coverage and
feature support.
To better understand the criteria that we used to analyze and rank vendor capabilities,we have provided a list of the questions from the vendor survey instrument (Table 4).
In addition to the eight BI feature questions asked of users, vendors were asked to
respond to an additional three questions: write-back, off-line, and real-time data refresh.

Vendor Importance of Mobile Business Intelligence:
In slight contrast to the end-user perspective on the importance of Mobile BI (15% view
it as critical unchanged from June), the vendors indicate both greater importance
generally, and believe it to be more critical than six months ago (Figure 15).
And, as you might expect, we have seen a tremendous amount of effort on the part ofthe vendor community to make progress in evolving current Mobile BI solutions or
releasing first versions to take advantage of this important market dynamic.
Of concern are those several vendors that still deem Mobile BI as only somewhat
important.
No vendors indicated that Mobile BI was unimportant.

BI Vendor Mobile Platform Priorities:
Like the end user community, the vendors have shifted dramatically in favor of Apples
iPad tablet computer making it the single top priority for BI mobile application
development (Figure 16).
Similarly, plans for Android phones and tablets (growing investment) and Windowsdevices (shrinking investment) map well to user priorities. In contrast, while many user
organizations remain committed to and are even investing in the RIM Blackberry
vendors appear to be planning a retreat.
While both users and vendors give the new RIM Playbook some credence, it is too early
to tell what user adoption or vendor development will look like.

BI Vendor Mobile Platform Support and Plans:
In June there was already solid BI vendor support for the iPhone and iPad. However,
this has grown to the point where nearly every BI vendor has an iPad and iPhone
solution (Figure 17). Of course, many vendors have a single executable for both with
logic to handle different dimension screens.
Interestingly, the number of available BI products for the RIM Blackberry also increased
in the past six months in spite of the lower priority given to it by vendors.
Surprisingly good support and promising plans have emerged for Android devices, as
well as the RIM Playbook.
Finally, it appears that there are now fewer solutions for Windows Mobile devices and
fewer plans in spite of (or because of?) the Windows 7 Phone launch.
So, users can expect the greatest selection of Mobile BI products on Apple and RIM
devices for now.

BI Vendor Mobile Platform Integration
Today, it is my opinion that native, SDK integration is preferable supporting a more
interactive and dynamic experience for users. And, while initiatives such html5 may
change that, for now the SDK is a preferred approach when seeking optimal usability.
Although the web browser (HTML) remains the most popular approach due to relativeease of development (Figure 18), the use of SDKs has grown since June most notably
for the iPad, iPhone and BlackBerry (Java is tantamount to the SDK on BB).
In sharp contrast, vendors have indicated that, at present, Android and Windows
devices will access BI functionality predominately through a browser.
So, for now, SDK-level integration is more likely to be found on Apple and RIM devices.
More details can be found at the end of this report, in the vendor details section.

As indicated in Figure 19, a majority of vendors intend to offer SDK-level integration on
Apple mobile devices an increase from June. This is followed by Android tablets/
phones and the RIM BlackBerry and Playbook tablet.
Although there will be more options in 12 months, still the greatest number of BI product
choices with SDK-level integration will be available primarily on Apple devices.

BI Vendor Supported Features on Mobile Devices
When examining available BI features on mobile devices, vendors (in general) have
made important advancements since June (Figure 20).
Vendor support for Alerting (a mandatory feature in my opinion) has improved since
June, but had been surprisingly limited. More advanced features such as write backand dashboard assembly will be uncommon during 2011 giving those that have
them an advantage.

Vendor Scoring
Using the data that was provided by twenty different BI vendors, we constructed a
simple model which ranks them based on mobile platform support, level of platform
integration and numbers of BI features supported (Figure 20).
It should be noted that this is but one dimension of a BI vendors capability. Readers areencouraged to use other tools to understand the many other dimensions of vendor
capability, such as our ownWisdom of Crowds BI Market Study.
Detailed vendor profiles characterizing vendor Mobile BI capabilities are presented on
pages 39 45.

Conclusions and Recommendations:When we first conceived of the first Mobile BI Market Study, we were certain that we were in the
midst of a paradigm shift for Business Intelligence. With this latest update, were certain of it.
In June we observed strong interest from both the user community and vendors. Six months
later user interest remains surprisingly strong even as many have deployed Mobile BIapplications since then. In conversations with these organizations, we hear a similar story
Mobile BI is a great enabler. It allows the information to be accessed wherever and whenever
the users need it. In my words, the information follows the userand theres no longer a
reason to not know.
Since June, more vendors have awakened to the market demand and have placed development
into high gear to create, expand or evolve Mobile BI solutions. And, new, specialized vendors
have emerged to take advantage of the opportunity.
We have also seen a flurry of new devices in the market many running the Android operating
system. New tablet computers from RIM, Motorola and others continue to feed the marketsinterest and demand for these devices. And, Apples iPad continues to dominate the market.
This is a high-stakes game and we expect there to be many more choices within the coming
year including (possibly) new options from Apple.
With such significant investment and innovations in hardware and software, things will continue
to move fast, with many more options emerging in the coming months. In general, this is a good
thing. However, there will be challenges. For instance, the standards for mobile continue to
evolve and shift. A battle between HTML5 and Flash continues to churn and security remains a
key concern.
But, the proverbial genie is out of the bottle so to speak. Study respondents have confirmedthat within two years a significant percentage of users will consume BI content exclusively on
mobile devices. Mobile BI is here now and will become dominant within the next 2+ years.
Accordingly, organizations must start now to learn, plan and begin implementing in order to
avoid getting left behind.
It is our hope that this report will serve as an important aid to help organizations best succeed
with their Mobile Business Intelligence initiatives.
Best of luck!
