1. N15 RefrifferatorsI LiquefiersThe threehelium refrigeratorsystemsMTL, ASST and N15B installedat the I’115 site have
similar characterisrticsand design.The main differencesbetweenthethreeare in the interfacesandconnectionsto thedesignedloads.Thebasicmodesof operationof eachsystemaxe:
1. 50L-50R: 50% liquefaction-50%refrigerationmode
2. lOOR: 100%refrigerationmode
3. 100L: 100%liquefactionmode
The basis for the systemdesign is the 50L-50Rmode,with a designcapacityof 2200 W ofrefrigerationand 22 Vs of liquefaction at 4.5 K, i.e. theequivalentof 4.4 kW ofrefrigerationat4.5 K. In the lOOR mode,when all the availablesystemcapacityis usedfor refrigeration,thedesign refrigerationcapacityis 3500 W. TheASST systemhasbeentestedat 4000 W. Thesystemscanprovide37 g/s of liquefaction in thefull liquefactionmodelOOL.
The systemsare designedto operateefficiently over a wide load range. The compressorsystemcontainstwo first stageandtwo secondstagecompressors.Underreducedloads,only onefirst stageand one secondstagecompressorcan be usedfor reducedpowerconsumptionandefficient operation.Underthis configuration,thesystemscandeliver: 1 765 W refrigerationand 7.65 Vs liquefactionin the 50L-50R mode,2 1370Wrefrigerationin the IOOR modeand3 15.6 Vs liquefactionin the lOOL mode.
The system design capacitiesunder the full compressordesign flow and 50% compressordesignflow conditions areplotted in Figure 1 and summarizedin Table 1. The guarenteed

Therearetwo basicoperatingcostsassociatedwith therunningthe N15 refrigerationsystems:a electricalpowerrequiredfor the compressors,and b LN2 consumptionfor helium precoolingin the coldbox. Table 2 lists the power input to the compressors,andthe LN2 consumption,togetherwith theassociatedcostsfor thebasicmodesof operation.
Thecompressorpowerrequirementsarearound 1400kW for designflow operation,andabout670 kW for 50% flow operation.Powercostsin Table2 are basedon thecurrentelectricity priceof $0.043/kWhfor theN15 site.
LN2 consumptionvaries greatly dependingon the operatingmode of the refrigerator.The100%refrigerationmodehasthe lowestLN2 consumption;the 100%liquefactionmodehasthehighestLN2 consumption,comparablein cost to theelectricalpower. The LN2 consumptionnumbersinclude a fixed allowanceof 12.5 Vs for utility purposesdewarmakeup,etc.; LN2demandfor the load is not included.TheLN2 costsarebasedon a bulk priceof$0.09per liter.
ReducedCapacityOperationandEfficienciesThe Nl5 refrigerationsystemscan operateefficiently over wide load range,from 1000W to
4000 W. Although the refrigeratordesignis optimized for the higherend loads 22% Carnotefficiency, cost-efficientoperationis maintainedat the low end about 1400 W by using onlyone compressorper stage.Figure A.2-2 shows the specific power consumption of therefrigerators,normalizedto the designpoint at lOOR. ThespecifIcpowerconsumptionis defmedastheratio of thepowerinput to the refrigerationcapacityW/W. It is seenthat therefrigeratorscanoperateat 70% or betterefficiencyrelativeto thedesignpoint in therangefrom about2000Wto4000W,andalsofroml200Wto 1400W.
