Today’s agenda
Data driven knowledge
• Unobtrusive knowledge capture
• A central insight that worked for us
An architecture to operationalize knowledge
• The data-knowledge continuum
• How to use it to extract value

Who are we?
Data and knowledge engineers with a background in DISA, national intelligence,
and industry.
Knowledge Advantage, Inc. (KAI) provides expertise in
Knowledge Management, Information Technology,
Program Management and Support, Leadership
Development and Training, and Workforce Development
to commercial companies and Government agencies

Datanova Scientific LLC is a leader in refining data into
knowledge.
Datanova’s patent-pending technologies were developed for
national intelligence, and are now revolutionizing the way
data is used in banking, healthcare, cyber, federal, and
pharma.
The Big Knowledge Platform (BKP) is Datanova’s flagship
product. It closes vital gaps in knowledge architectures.
The Enabling technology

What is data driven knowledge?
An organization’s knowledge as yielded by its many data streams.
Obtained by fusing and contextualizing multiple data streams into one
knowledge-base.
Data driven knowledge characteristics
A living thing that changes with the enterprise
Data reflects the current state of the enterprise. When knowledge is linked to data, it can be updated in real-time.
Agile to generate
Additional data sources should be assimilated over time. The knowledge model should be growable and changeable.
Unobtrusive to capture
Users’ daily business actions should generate knowledge as a byproduct.
Clear and obviously useful
Knowledge and its applications should be intuitive to users who embody that knowledge.
Offers many avenues of utilization
Data driven knowledge is a contextualized picture over multiple data sources. It should have many applications.
Technical challenges in getting there
Unifying data into one standard
Data is heterogenous. It must all be unified to speak one language.
Seamless use of AI, NLP, and machine learning
These advanced technologies are important for this process. Their use must be orderly and easy.
Polished end-user interfaces
Knowledge capture should be unobtrusive. Social network principles can be used (only the ethical ones).
Data-management and Data-trust
Heavy data processing must be accompanied with inbuilt tools for pedigree, provenance, & audit.
Putting it all together
Multiple modes of knowledge capture and utilization should be organized in one architecture.

What is the Skill-Link?
A professional network run internally at an
organization. This will deliver all the benefits of
commercial professional networks employees
and managers in a secure and customized
environment.

Skill-Link is driven
by DISA knowledge
Data sources generate
knowledge. Examples:
• Email for social graph
• Projects for skill entities
• HR for roles
etc.
Knowledge application
examples:
• DISA Skill-landscape
• Social workflows
• Changes over time

Skill-Link benefits
1. Employees will be able to use this as a secure internal social network. They will create skill profiles, connect, and use various apps. Skill profiles will be auto-populated by connecting to organization data sources, such as email.
2. Managers will be able to use an advanced skill search tool to find appropriate talent for special projects, program staffing, or for special task forces.
3. The skill-terrain – an overall skill structure of the organization’s human capital – can be created by aggregating across user profiles. This can be used as a tool for workforce planning, to identify skills gaps, or concentration of skills in a geographical or organizational area, to develop or enhance skill-capital and readiness; and to study outcomes of processes such as training, onboarding, or development.
4. The system will follow the principles of the DISA continuum architecture – wherein this investment can be reused across multiple applications.
