Brothers,

The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education Project is the combined effort of multiple vice presidents from chapters all across the district. They took the time to write a lesson over a specific topic related to Continuing Membership Education. I hope this can act as a resource for Vice Presidents, Membership Chairs, or any involved in educating our brothers for years to come. Feel free to use any of these lessons at any time and make them relative to your chapter.

I want to thank Saebyl McDoulett, Graham Delafield, Emily Parr, Liz King, Michael Marin, Will Daigneault, Louis Lemons, Juan Hernandez, Jordan Pettit, Evan Kolezar, Kayla McCaleb, and Camber Comeaux for your work and participation in this project. Without you, this would not have been possible!

Kappa Kappa Psi Lesson PlanThe Online Membership and Reporting System

Teacher: Allen AndrusChapter: SWD Vice PresidentSchool: N/A

Lesson Objective:The members will be able to, at any point, log on, fill out, save, submit, and

navigate the Online Membership and Reporting System.

Week in MEP:This lesson is designed for the Continuing Membership Education Program

Vocabulary:Online Membership and Reporting System (OMRS)

Materials:Computer, Guide for the OMRS, printed chapter documents from the OMRS,

paper, writing utensil, and web address for the OMRS.

Activities:First, begin by explaining what the OMRS is and why it was created. It was made

to transition from using paper mailed forms to an online submission system. This is faster, easier to compose, and easier to organize.

Second, show the members how to log on to their account. Everyone used an email to sign up for KKPsi. That email is the username for your account. Your account has already been created, you only have to access it. So, follow the web address, online.kkytbs.org, to the login page. To retrieve your password, click the link “Forgot your password?” and type in the email you submitted when you registered. Once you have clicked the button, you will have an email with a new password. You can now log in to your account. Once in the account, you have free reign to change your password to a user friendly one.

Third, begin by showing them how to navigate. Go through each section on the first page and explain them: Pending Submissions (if you have any), Other Pending Submissions (if you have any), Current Memberships, Past Memberships, Initiations, and Awards.

Fourth, go through the tabs at the top navigation bar. Have the members search for a specific chapter within the Southwest District. Then, ask them to find out who the current president for that chapter is. That way, they know where to find information

Page 4: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

about each chapter and where they can access their membership. The next tab, Member Search, can search for a specific member by name, chapter, district, or position. Have them look for themselves in this search. Then, go to the Submission Search tab. This tab will allow you to see all submissions a chapter has done. Tell the members to search for the last Chapter Personnel Report from your chapter. Next, move to the Reports tab. This tab has many resources for officers. If you click the Chapter Roster link, you can access your chapter’s current roster and download it as an excel document. This is a great resource for Vice Presidents and Secretaries. Explain what the Chapter Mailing List’s purpose is and how they can utilize it. Finally, click on the Awards link and tell you members to find the last time your chapter won an award (if applicable). The last link on the top navigation bar is Submit Feedback. Show them how to report a problem or praise the website.

Lastly, go back to the home page. On the right-hand side of the white field is a box labeled “Create New.” These links take you to all of the forms you will need to fill out throughout the year. Explain the Chapter Personnel Update, Chapter Summary Report, Fall Activity Report, Initiate Registration, Honorary Initiation, Graduating Senior Report, and the Officer & Chapter Update forms. You never know when one of them may need to fill one of these out. Detail all of the deadlines and how to completely submit a form. Also explain how to save a form as a draft.

Kappa Kappa Psi Lesson PlanHow To Plan a Service Project

Teacher: Saebyl McDoulettChapter: AlphaSchool: Oklahoma State University

Lesson Objective: Students should be able to identify worthwhile projects related to the band

programs. They should also be encouraged to think of creative and unique ways to help further band programs.

Week in MEP: This lesson is designed for the Continuing Membership Education Program.

Vocabulary: Values (especially related to Kappa Kappa Psi), Service, Kappa Kappa Psi

Purposes.

Materials: Active minds ready to be as creative as possible.

Activities: In the candidate meeting, they are encouraged to brainstorm ideas for service

projects. We then evaluate these ideas to see if they adhere to the values of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Assignment/Homework: As a group, the candidates are required to plan and implement a service project

that helps further the band program in some way.

Correctives: Try to get as many candidates in the preliminary discussion as possible. Maybe

they could each write an idea on a piece of paper and then all the ideas could be read aloud to the class. This way, everyone has put in some sort of input.

Kappa Kappa Psi Lesson PlanThe Purposes Dissected

Teacher: Graham DelafieldChapter: DeltaSchool: University of Oklahoma

Lesson Objective: The key to this lesson will be to relate the dissections of each purpose to your

chapter and the activities in which you participate. Knowledge through explanation is good, but personal relation makes way for greater understanding.

Week in MEP:This lesson is designed for the Continuing Membership Education Program.

Vocabulary:Promote: to help or encourage to exist or flourish; further.Cultivate: to develop or improve by education or training.Stimulate: to rouse action or effort, as by encouragement or pressure; spur on.Promulgate: to promote or make widely known.Foster: to encourage or promote the development of something.

Material:All purposes are found of Page 19 of the Guide to Membership

Activities (What are you going to do to reinforce the acquisition of the lesson?):While the five purposes are well known and appreciated by all who have gone

through the Membership Education Program, many times we forget the statements following. “Kappa Kappa Psi operates primarily as a student service and leadership and recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the Director of Bands in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that is required for his or her band. Our goals are to provide the band not only with organized and concentrated service activities, but give to our membership valid and wholesome experiences in organization, leadership, and social status.”

Since the audience has already been educated on the five purposes, our goal for this portion of the lesson should be to relate the purposes to how they advance our bands, the chapters, and our fraternity.

To reinforce the teachings of this lesson, it is a good idea to have a variation in stimuli. Whether it be worksheets, games, or slideshows is not for us to say. You know how your chapter learns best. Play to your strengths.

The Purposes Dissected

Page 8: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

1st Purpose

To promote the existence and welfare of the college and university bands and to cultivate at large a wholesome respect for their activities and achievements.

● To promote the existence and welfare of the college and university bands…The college marching band, as we know it today, has existed for over a century. More than 100 years of tradition, excellence, spirit and pride in supporting athletic teams and performing at a high level. This success, while certainly influenced by educators, environment, and circumstance, is mostly due to the members. The members of the college marching band were, are, and always will be the most important aspect to the success of a band program. It is important to recognize our role not only in the mundane operations of our programs, but in the continued success and lasting tradition.

As brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi, it is not only our hope, but our mission to further the existence and welfare of the college and university band. We are its advocate, its image, its leaders, and its backbone. We must be sure to continually seek ways in which to serve our band program not simply to check it off a list of duties that our chapter has, but leave the bands better than they were than when we found them.

Make it personal:

What are some ways you promote the existence of your band? How are you good advocates for the program? What do you do to show the community and the campus that the college marching band is alive and thriving?

● …and to cultivate at large a wholesome respect for its activities and achievements.

Let’s get real, being in the marching band hasn’t always been easy. Maybe some of us hold some not-so-fond memories of our early days when the marching band kids were not the frontrunners of the popularity race. And maybe we still get the occasional glancing blow from those who don’t quite share in the appreciation for marching music. But whatever the case, we are called to strive for the highest, to pursue excellence in all that we do—even if it isn’t the most popular activity.

Reinforcing the first section of this purpose, we should never settle than anything less than making the bands better. We, as leaders and servers, should find ways in which to increase the level of attainment from our college bands and act as catalysts for their progression. And DO NOT stop there. We should also aim to improve our chapters and the things we are capable of achieving. As we grow our bands, we must grow also to allow for further improvement of the music program.

Make it personal:

Page 9: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

What are some ways that we can improve our music programs? What are some areas that lack attention? How can we improve those areas? What are some issues we need to address within our chapter? How can we take ourselves to the next level?

2nd Purpose

To honor outstanding bandmembers through privilege of membership extended as a reward for technical achievement and appreciation for the best in music.

● To honor outstanding bandmembers through privilege of membership…Hold on a second. Take a step back and think. Out of the millions of people who have been a part of a college marching band, from the thousands of institutions, you are one of the people who decided to take it upon yourself to go above and beyond in service to something greater. More than 350 chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi have ever existed and just over 200 remain active today. You are part of something that may seem large, but in the grand scheme it is so small. You truly are part of a select few who have earned the privilege of becoming part of this brotherhood. If that’s not special to you, I don’t know what is.

But as wonderful as it is to be reminded of how special we are, we are called to continue that high standard. We should remember that in all that we do, especially when t comes to serving the band, we should do so in a passionate way. You are outstanding bandmembers, we can not let go of that mindset. Play an active role in the operations of your band programs (and not just the marching band, but the concert bands, too). And realize that this opportunity, being in Kappa Kappa Psi, is not just a hobby or a thing you joined because it was cool, it is a privilege. Do not lose sight of that.

And furthermore, this part of the second purpose affects us when looking for new members. Search for not those who are well liked, or good musicians, but those who will leave the fraternity in a better place after they are gone. We strive for the highest in all that we do. We must find those who wish to do the same.

Make it personal:

Do we as members show that we view membership as a privilege, or do we take it for granted? What are some of the qualities we search for in prospective members? Are we preparing our band program and our chapter for growth, or stagnation?

Page 10: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

● …extended as a reward for technical achievement and appreciation for the best in music.

Music is what defines us. It is the very backbone that supports our fraternity. We all understand the importance of music and how dear it is. But the reality is, it is easy to forget to express that appreciation for music. When we get to college, we become so incredibly busy and laden with task after task after task that any momentary reprieve is treasured. So not everybody always wants to pursue extra opportunities for music or spend an evening going to concerts, we get it, we’re only human.

But we cannot forget how important it is to be seeking opportunities to exercise our musical abilities. This means performing in ways other than the marching and concert bands. Find a local high school and go play pep tunes at one of their games. Play for nursing homes. Do performances at elementary schools and let them experience all the cool instruments. Do something. And, as well, show your appreciation for the music that goes on around you. Go to your brothers’ concerts when you can. Go to a musical. There are endless possibilities, but don’t ever forget how important music is to each of us and to the fraternity.

Make it personal:

How do we show appreciation for music? What opportunities can/should we pursue outside of the college marching band?

3rd Purpose

To stimulate campus leadership and promulgate an uncompromising respect through the medium of the college band for gracious conduct, good taste and unswerving loyalty.

● To stimulate campus leadership…This is fairly straightforward. Though we are part of a student organization that may be small in number, we are part of something much larger: the college band. Whether it is a concert band or the marching band, everybody has heard of one of those things. We should use the resources we have—the name of our fraternity and the renown of the college band—to get involved on our campus. There are opportunities left and right in which other fraternities and sororities participate, so why shouldn’t we? It is important to play an active role within our university because 1) serving our university can be a reward within itself 2) because it further advances the name of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Page 11: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

Make it personal:

What are some ways we could get involved on campus? What are things Kappa Kappa Psi does not do at our university that you would like to begin?

● …and promulgate an uncompromising respect through the medium of the college band for gracious conduct, good taste and unswerving loyalty.

What is our identity as members of Kappa Kappa Psi? To be members of the bands? Yes. To support the athletic teams? Yes. To promote the performance of good music? Yes. The list could go on and on about who we are and what our mission is as members of the band, but none of that entirely captures our identity within the fraternity. Through the college band we can learn how we are able to promote personal qualities.

As members of the college band we must hold ourselves to the highest standard in all respects. Treating others with respect, showing diligence in all that we do, and being a positive image for all those who see us are things we should constantly be wary of.

Make it personal:

How do we set a good example for those who see us? How can we improve the impression we make on others?

4th Purpose

To foster a close relationship between college bands and promote a high average of attainment by the performance of good music and selection of worthwhile projects.

● To foster a close relationship between college bands…In the years following WWI, there was a large movement to create some driving force that would foster a greater interest in band music. One of the ways the people behind this movement sought expression was through creating closer relationships between band members.

Needless to say, we hope you are able to foster close relationships with those in your college band. You’re around each other enough that you probably know more about the person next to you than you wish you did. Just because we are a musical fraternity that places a huge importance on service does not mean we cannot have fun. Get out there! Meet people. Talk to those who don’t know you. Be a joy in someone else’s life that day because believe it or not, creating these bonds is an important part of our fraternity.

Page 12: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

Make it personal:

What are some ways we build relationships with the people in our chapter? Within our band? With bands from other universities?

● …and promote a high average of attainment by the performance of good music and selection of worthwhile projects.

Reinforcing what was discussed in the 2nd purpose, we can see that, again, music is of high importance within our fraternity. Always be seeking ways to better yourself as a musician and perform fro the enjoyment of others.

The latter half of the 4th purpose is from where we draw our emphasis on service. At the very lowest level, we are required to serve our band programs. Do the not so fun, tedious jobs that no one else wants to do. Help the directors those days when they need to fill flip folders. Go help when the band room has to be set up. This is the most fundamental way in which we serve and while it may not technically be required, we should view it as such.

There are so many other ways we can serve besides band logistics. We each attend a university that is full of need. It is only too easy to find ways to help. You could probably ask any faculty member and they would be able to point out issues that could be solved if only that had hands to do the work. Things like painting walls, caring for gardens, cleaning, and repairing are all simple, simple ways that we can give back to our university. Why should we not pursue those endeavors?

And, even further, there is a whole world out there and there is most certainly an insurmountable number of ways we can serve. Serving our bands is necessary, serving our universities is noble, but taking the chance to serve the community and give back to the world that has given us so much is imperative. Always look for ways to serve others. And do not limit yourself to those in the band program.

Make it personal:

What are some ways we serve outside of the band program? What are some service opportunities that would should begin to invest time in? How can we better serve our community?

Page 13: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

5th Purpose

To provide a pleasant and helpful social experience for all engaged in college band work and to cooperate with other musical organizations in any manner consistent with the purposes of the institution at which chapters are located.

● To provide a pleasant and helpful social experience for all engaged in college band work…

Reinforcing the 4th purpose, fostering relationships with one another is a good thing. You are not going to be deprived a fun college experience just because you don’t pursue the craziest parties. We realize the importance of having fun and we encourage that in all respects. And Kappa Kappa Psi aims to provide its members with a social experience that is both meaningful and appropriate.

Make it personal:

What are some social activities you do within your chapter? Who is in charge of planning those events? How can someone else become involved with organizing social events?

● …and to cooperate with other musical organizations in any manner consistent with the purposes of the institution at which chapters are located.

Many of the universities we attend have more than one musical organization. Whether that is Tau Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha, Sigma Alpha Iota, or any other, we are called to work together and instill a close relationship between the organizations. Do not get caught up in the stigma and misconceptions of other organizations. This is a slippery slope that will result in ill relations between people who deep down truly love the same thing: music.

Find ways to bond with these other organizations. Set up a poker night with Phi Mu Alpha. Have an ice cream party with Tau Beta Sigma and Sigma Alpha Iota. Whatever you want to do is fine, just be intentional with the plans. You’ll find out that you have much more in common than you once believed.

Make it personal:

How are our relationships with the other organizations? How can we improve those relationships?

Trivia Game:This is a game that can be played by the whole PM class, individually or in small

teams. Each player or team can use the notes they’ve taken during the lesson, or during their homework, depending on when you play the trivia game. Each player or team will submit their answer on a sheet of paper or white board, and answers will be checked by the VPME. Each question is worth 20 points for a fully correct answer, and 10 points for a partially correct answer (you can be the judge of what constitutes partially correct). Whoever is leading after the first fifteen questions wins. Should there be a tie, the sixteenth question will be the tiebreaker.

Founders trophy? (Chapter Leadership Award)16) TIEBREAKER Which chapter is the only chapter to have won the William A

Scroggs Founders trophy three times? (Lambda- University of Arkansas)

Assignment/Homework:

Each pm should be assigned a specific award to look up past winners of. There are 15 awards on the website, with the distinguished service to music medal having the most winners, divided into 10 subcategories. The W. Francis McBeth Student Musicianship Award has one former winner, so is probably not the best category to assign. Each PM should go online to look up the past winners of their award, and make a list with the following possible items on it: first winner, most recent winner, chapters that have won more than one time (and how many times they’ve won), and whether your home chapter has won the award before. PMs should bring their lists to the next lesson to share with the group. Learning about past winners can breed familiarity with other chapters, and the history of the fraternity.

Kappa Kappa Psi Lesson PlanNational Policy on Alcohol and Controlled Substances

Teacher: Liz KingChapter: Rho ChapterSchool: Tulane University

NOTE: This lesson has been written as a guide for the brother leading this discussion. Situations and recommendations are specific to the Rho Chapter. Feel free to alter any situations or examples to better fit your chapter’s environment. This lesson should encourage discussion and thought amongst all brothers and should not be directly lectured.

Lesson Objective:We want brothers returning and new to be able to:

Identify appropriate and inappropriate situations involving drugs or alcohol Respond to the inappropriate situations Follow up to ensure the situation has been resolved Avoid inappropriate situations in the future

Week in MEP: The STAR program should occur early on in the semester in order to refresh the

importance of participating in a dry organization after time away from school First possible meeting following the STAR Program

Vocabulary: Although there is no specific vocabulary, the leader of this lesson should define

what makes situations appropriate or inappropriate when involving drugs and alcohol.

Materials: Giant post-it, PowerPoint, whiteboard and marker (not essential, but suggested

to facilitate discussion and keep lesson on task) Print out national alcohol policy (digital or hard copy for all brothers) Print out STAR program (digital or hard copy for leader’s referral, may be

necessary to reiterate important points during the course of this discussion)

Activities:

Page 22: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

Suggested Lesson Outline: Ask brothers to share situations involving dugs or alcohol as a discussion open to

the entire chaptero The purpose is to open the floor for discussion and provide examples to

start the lessono Brothers should start thinking about the concepts that will be addressed

in the lesson Some types of example situations that should be addressed (once again, feel free

to adapt to your chapter’s specific environment):o 1st situation

You find a stranger who is intoxicated and obviously needs help. What do you do as a brother and leader in your campus community? How would you use the ideals of the fraternity to assist you in handling this situation?

Some appropriate responses Call one of the stranger’s friends (use their phone is possible), call

campus police or EMS services if in bad shape, make sure they are in safe hands and company.

o 2nd situation A brother or fellow band member needs help. What do you do as

a brother and leader in your campus community? How would you use the ideals of the fraternity to assist you in handling this situation?

Some appropriate responses Similar to 1st situation. Helping should be easier situation to

handle because of familiarity and bond with the person in question.

o 3rd situation A brother is thinking about hosting a party that is not advocated

by the national alcohol policies found online. What do you do as a brother and leader in your campus community? How would you use the ideals of the fraternity to assist you in handling this situation?

Some appropriate responses Approach the brother individually and speak to him/her about the

parties’ inconsistency with the fraternity’s policies. Suggest ideas to make the event constitutionally acceptable. If not possible, advocate canceling the event all together. Provide an alternative event.

o 4th situation You are thinking about attending a party may not be advocated by

the national alcohol policies found online. What do you do as a

Page 23: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

brother and leader in your campus community? How would you use the ideals of the fraternity to assist you in handling this situation?

Some appropriate responses Refer to the national policies and further investigate the event to

check if the event is constitutional. If it is not, make necessary adjustments to avoid this situation. All brothers should be aware that their individual actions not only reflect themselves, but their brothers and Kappa Kappa Psi as a whole.

At this point, split into small discussion groupso Discuss anything surprising, interesting, or important concerning the

policies or situations shared amongst the chapter o Small groups are made to make sure every brother has a firm

understanding for the fraternity’s alcohol policy. Any questions or further clarifications concerning points brought up during lesson should be addressed at this time.

Small groups present ideas they discussed to the entire chaptero Make sure their discussion (questions and answers) are briefly presented

to the entire chapter. Depending on the length of the meeting and size of the chapter, ask the small

groups to perform a skit based on a situation they discussed. You could even assign the examples that we have provided above.

o Perform skits at conclusion of the meeting or assign for homework to be performed at a follow-up meeting.

Assignments/Homework: Spend a few minutes reflecting on the lesson.

Correctives: Based on the size of your chapter and environment you are surrounded by on

campus, you may have to alter discussion tactics. Feel free to alter or expand on any aspect that is more specific to your university

and surrounded area. (e.g. Mardi Gras – Tulane University) An issue with our chapter is that the same 5 or 6 brothers speak solely. We

suggest that you split groups up into smaller groups and call on brothers to provide examples from their small group discussions. Make sure that every brother has had a chance to speak.

If any brother has a history of inappropriate experiences, no one has the right to mention these events except that individual. (Fraternal Code of Conduct)

Kappa Kappa Psi Lesson PlanThe Purposes and Service

Teacher: Richard (Will) DaigneaultChapter: Delta SigmaSchool: University of Texas at Arlington

Lesson Objective:Identify the purposes and how these purposes guide us in our activities as a

chapter.

Week in MEP: This lesson is designed for the Continuing Membership Education Program

Vocabulary:Promote, welfare, cultivate, wholesome respect, privilege of membership,

promulgate, attainment.

Materials:National guide of Membership, paper, pencil, optional prepared list of a chapters

normal activities (fundraisers, service projects, etc.)

Activities:First, break down the language in each purpose. What does it mean to cultivate

at large a wholesome respect. What does it mean to honor someone with the privilege of membership. The "vocabulary" words are the most important sections for me and need the most explaining. Then start to put each purpose in your own words or in "laymen" terms. Something that everyone can relate to. Finally, start relating each purpose to projects carried out by the chapter. How service projects are part of promoting the existence and welfare of college bands. How these projects need to be activities that cultivate respect for the programs achievements. Gossiping or talking poorly about a program does not show respect for a program's achievements. Examples like this help members to realize why we do things for a band program.

Assignment/Homework:

Make a list of activities we can do to fulfill each purpose. Compare the list with each other and discuss how each activity fulfills this purpose (or how it conflicts with a purpose). Or give out a list of activities that the chapter does (ex. moving podiums, providing water, advertising for concerts, etc.) and match activities to a purpose (there can be more than one purpose fulfilled for each activity; ex: working with another organization to hire a composer to commission a piece for the band = 1, 4, and 5).

Correctives (What worked well and what would you do differently?):

The idea behind teaching the purposes this way is to not just memorize word for word each purpose. The concept is to understand what the purpose means to KKPsi. This means understanding how we can use the purposes to guide our projects and help each chapter do activities that are "worthwhile".

I tried covering 1 purpose each week but with so much information about national and district being covered I had to go over the purposes again in a separate week. I would take a day to just cover the purposes and be sure that the information is completely understood.

Kappa Kappa Psi Lesson PlanThe Good Member

Teacher: Juan HernandezChapter: Zeta Beta School: Howard Payne University Lesson Objective:

The brothers will be able to define and have a better grasp on the subject of a good member. They will be able to answer the following questions,

-What is a good member-What qualities are in a good member-What exactly does a good member do-why do we need good members-How do you become a good member

Week in MEP:

This lesson is designed for the Continuing Membership Education Program.

Vocabulary:Good MemberResponsibleLoyalReliableRespectLeaderKnowledgeable

Materials:WhiteboardDry erase markers (or just something to write down)

Activities:

Activity 1This is a simple one. In order to help the chapter as a whole get on the same

page ask for each individual’s definition of a good member. Take keywords from each and write them up on a board for the chapter to see. Now as a Segway into the next question, draw a line straight down and now ask for what qualities are in a good member. Make sure to get every brother involved. Don’t let the same people keep answering. When you feel like you have run the well dry, stop and look at each list. Do

Page 30: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

they match up? What is the same on the list and what is different? Ask why a certain quality was mentioned in one list but now the other. Question everything you can.

Activity 2Make a list of qualities you would find in a good leader. Now draw a line down

and make another list, only this time list the qualities you would find in a good follower. Come up with different scenarios and ask who would be leading it, a leader or a follower. (i.e. Brother Jack is delegating jobs during a service project. – leader). Ask each of the brothers where they feel more comfortable, leader or follower. Ask why they feel that way.

Assignment/Homework:Have them make a list of qualities they need to work on personality. Bring it to

the next meeting and have them read them in front of the chapter. This is not meant to embarrass them but to let their brothers know what they need to work on and so the others can help him/her work on and get there. We don’t strive alone, that’s why we have our brothers. To back us up when we fall down.

Correctives:

Side notes:Learn everything you can before you teach this lesson. Question everything

because if we don’t then how will we ever learn?

What is a “good member?” Is it someone who works hard? Comes up with all the ideas? Leads every project? The definition of a good member is a broad one. Many interpretations exist now it’s only a matter all agreeing on one.

The qualities that we look for in a good member should be the same qualities we look for when we are recruiting for the brotherhood. Does this mean we only look for those who instill every single quality and not let in those who are missing a few? No. We, as human beings, are not perfect, but we learn.

What does a good member do? How to they conduct themselves? This is the overall view/question this lesson is about. I have seen brothers who strive to lead every project but don’t make the best leaders. I have also seen some who make great workers but deep down do not have that servant’s heart to want to lead a small group/task force. There are those who would rather stay behind the scenes and there are those who want to be at the head of it all.

With that being said, what does a good member do that makes him good?

Page 31: database/SWDCME…  · Web viewKappa Kappa Psi Southwest District. Continuing Membership Education Project. Spring 2014. Brothers, The Southwest District Continuing Membership Education

I’m sure you have heard the saying “know your place.” There are those who lead and there are those who follow. Knowing when and where to put your skills is what is important.

Why do we need good members? Because we need someone to do the heavy lifting, to come up with all the ideas, to lead the service project for that month? We need good members to not only lead and follow along as a working hand, but also to be the better influence. If you were to see someone cleaning up a mess would you not help them as well? Striving for the highest is contagious belief! It just takes one brother to say we need to get this done, then all the other brothers who stand next to the side will, more or less, jump up and start helping. Always remember the best leaders are those who work alongside their followers.

How do you become a good member? It quite simple, strive for the highest. Never settle for bottom line. Always ask is there something more I can do. Do this with love and compassion and the right intentions and all will be well. Having your brother right next to you, side by side, does not only give you a boost; it reassures you that you are not alone. It’s been proven that a human is more likely to follow if they are not alone and have someone to work alongside them.

Kappa Kappa Psi Lesson PlanThe Fraternal Code of Conduct

Teacher: Jordan PettitChapter: Theta NuSchool: Northwestern State University

Lesson Objective: 1. A deeper self-reflection of the Fraternal Code of Conduct.2. In what ways do these qualities describe Bohumil Makovsky.

Week in MEP:This lesson is designed for the Continuing Membership Education Program.

Vocabulary:

Honor, Integrity, Respect, and Loyalty

Materials:Guide to Membership: Page 20 (Description of the Fraternal Code of Conduct)Page 27 (Background on and any other materials about Bohumil Makovsky)

Activities:1. On paper, the Prospective Members write down how Boh lived the Four Codes

of Conduct.2. Then together as a group, we go through each code and discussed each one. 3. Through this we then thought how we live through these Codes in our lives and

through the band program.4. Then wrote down and discussed what do they Codes then mean to us as

individuals.

Assignment/Homework:Prospective Members independently read about Boh and then come together

for a group discussion about Boh.

Correctives:I saw that they had a greater knowledge of Boh quickly and how we look up to

him as our Guiding Spirit. Even though lessons can be tied together, it worked well of seeing how Boh demonstrated these qualities through his life.

What I would have done differently, I think having other active brothers come and discuss what the Codes mean to themselves and how they believe the fraternity lives these Codes as a whole.

Lesson Objective:The members to recognize the symbols and know the pronunciation of the Greek

Alphabet

Week in MEP:This lesson is designed for the Continuing Membership Education Program.

Vocabulary:The symbols and pronunciation of the letters in the Greek alphabet

Materials:A list of the alphabet and their symbolsA plastic cupTwo sets of the symbols and word form of the alphabet

Activities:

“Keep It Up”Everyone in the group stands in a circle. One person has a plastic cup and throws

it up in the air in the middle of the group. The object of the game is to keep the cup from touching the ground but whenever someone hits the cup they have to say the next letter that comes in the alphabet.

Rules: The same person cannot hit the cup twice in a rowIf the cup touches the ground or someone forgets a letter, the group starts back at the beginning of the alphabet.

If they succeed easily, challenge them to see how fast they can do it.You can also do this by playing Hot Potato instead of a cup.

Matching GamePrint off two sets of the symbols of the Greek alphabet and the word form.

Scramble the pages and on two different sides of the room, tape the papers where you cannot see the writing. Then divide your chapter into two groups. Have the two groups compete against each other to see who can match all of them first. To go smoothly, have a monitor for each group to make sure no one cheats and to keep score for when they make a match.

Kappa Kappa Psi Lesson PlanBeing a “Good” Big Brother

Teacher: Kayla McCalebChapter: Lambda XiSchool: Southeastern Louisiana University

Lesson Objective: To discuss aspects related to being a Big Brother.

Week in MEP:This lesson is designed for the Continuing Membership Education Program.

Materials Paper, Gavel, Big Brother Oaths

Activities The Brothers present will sit in a circle. The person in charge of the lesson, (in

this case the Vice President of Membership), will pass out sheets of paper. All Brothers will write down one thing that they feel as though they were missing from their own Big Brother during their personal line experience in non-descriptive terms and without mentioning names. They will then fold the papers and put them in a hat in the center.Starting with the Vice President of Membership, Brothers will go around the circle, each pulling out and reading one of the papers aloud.

Next, there will be a pass-the-gavel activity, in which the gavel will be passed around the circle and the Brother holding the gavel will answer the posed question.

1. What is the most memorable thing that your Big Brother has ever done for you?

After the first question has been answered by all Brothers present, the Big Brother Oath is passed out and Brothers are given a chance to read through it.

2. Which line of the Oath stands out to you the most and why?

After listening to your chapter, if you currently have or have had a Little on line, how well do you think you are living up to the Oath that you recited?

Assignment/Homework:If you have a Little on line right now, you are challenged to strive for the highest

and be an example for them by the integrity of your actions
