PBI LIVE AT THE BAR CENTER TITLE: EMPLOYMENT LAW TIPS FOR SMALL TO MEDIUM-SIZED FIRMS LOCATION: YORK COUNTY BAR CENTER, 137 EAST MARKET ST, YORK PA DATE: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2017 TIME: REGISTRATION: 12:00PM PROGRAM: 12:30PM–3:45PM CREDIT: 3 hours’ substantive credits If you have your own law firm, then you need to understand how to be an employer, and not just a lawyer, and how to avoid becoming entangled in the very disputes and lawsuits that you advise others about. Unfortunately, we forget that our own employees may file claims against us or our firms based on their treatment n the workplace. This new program is designed specifically for solo practitioners and small to medium-size firms looking for guidance in the employment law area. Learn what the many "protected categories” are, and generally, what Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act ("ADEA"), and the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") prohibit; what "harassment" means and consists of; what you can and cannot ask in an interview; what constitutes "retaliation" and an "adverse action"; and what to do if an employee complains of discrimination or harassment. Discover the difference between "employees" and "independent contractors," as well as a little about the wage and hour elements of the Fair Labor Standards Act ("FLSA"), the Family Medical Leave Act ("FMLA") and what OSHA does.

AMENDMENT: WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND BUSINESS

TIME: LUNCH AT 12:00 - PROGRAM 12:30 to 1:30 LOCATION: YCBA, 137 E MARKET ST, YORK, PA 17401 On June 20, 2017, in Pennsylvania Environmental Defense Foundation v. Pa., the Pennsylvania Supreme Court dramatically expanded the scope and reach of Article I, Section 27 of Pennsylvania’s Constitution, the Environmental Rights Amendment (“ERA”). The Court essentially discarded 40 years of precedent and affirmed the duty of Pennsylvania government, at levels, to protect the Commonwealth’s environmental resources. This session will review how this broad interpretation will impact businesses and decision-making at all levels of government. It is likely that the ERA will now be used to challenge governmental decisions, including those made by local governments, and will impose new responsibilities on government and businesses. The PACLE Board approved this program for 1 hour substantive credit. To receive credit, all attendees must be registered and in their seats by 12:30 p.m. Late arrivals will receive no credit.
