Successful, Informed & Creative Learners

An incredibly successful term of learning! At our assemblies this week I asked our students “What progress have you made this term that you are most proud of?” I’ve seen many wonderful academic, sporting and creative arts performances and celebrations however the most valuable feedback I can receive is hearing from our students what they consider to be the most important achievement they have made this term. This week I presented our Mira Poljak literacy and numeracy awards and spoke with many staff about the importance of this recognition in her memory. Many of the staff who have been here a long time shared their memories of working with Mrs Poljak, the kind of person she was and the values that made her such an inspirational teacher at Curl Curl. This important information helped me to recognise the meaning and importance of the awards and the students who were chosen to receive them. Mrs Poljak was one of the first reading recovery teachers here at Curl Curl North Public School. She taught for over 25 years and was an influential teacher described as a pioneer in school literacy programs with her passion and commitment supporting students to achieve their personal best. Mrs Poljak was a teacher who loved travelling, she had a strong work ethic and a love of yellow roses. It was also incredibly important that at our school Mrs Poljak’s passion and ability to make a difference in supporting student literacy was continually recognised and these awards are presented to students who have made significant progress in the area of literacy or numeracy.

Teaching & Learning in the 21 s t Century

This fortnight I observed co-teaching in practice. During a visit to 4MW I watched Mrs Watson and Mrs Murray facilitate student learning using learning modes that included collaboration, discussion and feedback. Students in 4MW knew what they were learning and what they needed to do or show to know that they had been successful in their learning. Thank you to those students who allowed me to listen to their presentations on soil erosion, students who explained how creating an iMovie enabled them to show their learning in science and how using a google doc. provided them with peer and teacher feedback. We are currently investing teacher learning in Filmpond

which is a revolutionary documentary making system that allows us to capture our teaching practice through the production of an authentic short film. I look forward to keeping you updated and sharing in our documentaries when they have been produced.

A visit from two Kindergarten students who talked with me about their exceptional writing. Ruby, thank

you for sharing such a detailed story with me. High expectations & Community Engagement

As you are aware our school are using the Tell Them From Me student, teacher and parent surveys to capture the view of our students, teachers and parents on a number of critical aspects of school performance. The Partners in Learning parent survey provides parents’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school as well as learning at home. Data provided by the survey includes information about the extent to which parents feel the school supports learning and positive behaviour and promotes a safe and inclusive environment. I am asking for your support in gathering this data by completing this survey. The data collected across all three surveys will identify strengths and areas for improvement, assess the impact of current initiatives and inform future programs and policies. This year our leadership team have written some additional and specific questions that relate to your child’s learning at Curl Curl North Public School and include a question related to strengthening home-school communication, gifted and talented programs and supporting your child as we transition into our new school. Please access the survey via the link below.

The Curly Colour Run is fast approaching on Friday 26 October. Please contact our school P&C to help out at this energetic, exciting and colourful fundraising event. For such a large school we have a small but extremely dedicated P&C team who are continually working to support all children at Curly. All students have received information about this event, however, further details can be located in this newsletter (Page 7) or from the school office.

With our school motto ‘The feel of the country in the heart of the city’ I am excited to share with you Playground to Paddock, an initiative which offers a meaningful connection between our students and students in rural Cudal Public School. Further information on this initiative is included in this newsletter.

Please have a safe, healthy and happy holiday and I look forward to hearing about your family adventures when our students resume on Monday 15 October.

Library News Overdue Notices Many thanks to everyone who has responded to the overdue notices which were sent home last week. If your child still has an overdue book at home can you please help your child look for the book and return it to the library as soon as possible. Library Bags It was great to see so many children with their library bag this week. Next term, all library lessons will begin in week 1. Please continue to ensure your child has their library bag so book borrowing is not delayed. Thank you. Street Library Do not hesitate to use the Street Library in the holidays if your children run out of books to read. We will make sure the street library is full on the last day of term so there are books for everyone to enjoy. When you have finished with a book, simply return it to the street library for others to enjoy. What’s on in the Holidays? The Northern Beaches Council Library will be running a holiday program with some great activities for kids. Simply control click the link below. Then click ‘What’s On,’ and then select School Holiday Activities. I also recommend checking out Kid’s Corner. www.northernbeaches.nsw.gov.au/library Leaving our school? From time to time children leave our school for various reasons. Many families return their library books before they leave, but sadly some do not. If you know you are leaving our school, it would be greatly appreciated if you could kindly return Curl Curl library books to our school before you go.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

Band News Thank you to every family who assisted in some special way to make our Band Fundraising K-6 Discos a “roaring success”. I have said it every year, “We could not hold such a massive fun evening without the help and support of the band families.”

A special thanks also to the teachers, who gave their time to supervise all those very excited students who were breaking out amazing dance moves. Having said that, not one student was spoken to for unsatisfactory behaviour. How good was that! Congratulations and thank you boys and girls!

Thank you to every family who bought raffle tickets in our band raffles and a special thank you to everyone, who donated prizes.

What an amazing TRIX Off-Road Bike, donated by Miss Gabi (OT Therapist working at Curly) and her family’s business “TRIX Cycles’ at Frenchs Forest.

Congratulations to all bands! Over the last two weeks we have seen and heard each band perform in a variety of different musical environments. Each time I have been extremely proud of Curl Curl North students.

A few weeks ago the Senior Band performed at the North Shore Music Festival at Chatswood High

School and everyone who attended was impressed with the students’ effort.

Last week the Training Band performed for Y1 and Y2 students in a school assembly. This was no doubt the Training Band’s best performance ever! Well done boys and girls! Your solos helped the younger students understand and get to know each of our instruments.

On Saturday morning last weekend, our Junior Band performed at the NSSWE Spring Festival of Music. The Junior Band performed in the Concourse Auditorium in Chatswood. They performed to a full house of parents and guests. Great work Junior Band you sounded fantastic! On Sunday afternoon people in Chatswood were entertained outdoors at the Concourse by a number of schools involved in the NSSWE Big Band and Jazz Band Spring Festival of Music. Our Stage Band performed and were absolutely awesome!

P&C News Each year the P&C part fund an extra teacher to keep class sizes lower. In addition to this funding we have also donated the following to the school this term:

· Continued our programme of purchasing iPads for the school by adding another 20 to the current bank with the aim to have at least 6 iPads per class by the middle of next year.

· Funded the new Macqlit literacy support programme for the 3-6 years, a valuable resource which makes such a difference to literacy rates in the older years.

· Funded the Curly Visible Learning team (a team of 13 teachers and leaders) to participate in the Corwin Visible learning programme.

· We have taken up the funding for the year 3 book programme which has been running successfully for a number of years now.

· Purchased 3 outdoor games for the students. · Funded up to $1000 per year for the teachers to

add education resources for their year group. These donations come from you, the parents, the P&C run Curly Kids OOSH, Curly Canteen and Curly Uniform shop. We would like to thank all parents for the ongoing support you give to the P&C and we hope to see some of you at our upcoming comedy night.

Y6 Fundraising "Year 6 Cake Stall Tuesday 18th Sep” Thanks to our lovely school community for helping to

make the cake stall a huge success & all the Yr 6 parents and kids who brought cakes in - everyone did and we had enough to feed the whole school! And thanks to those who bought a cake too. We raised about $940 which is a fantastic result. Thanks to the parents and 6S students who helped to sell the cakes - it was heaps of fun. Seeing the cakes all spread out the morning of was a great reminder of what

a sharing school we are.

Thanks again, The Year 6 Fund-raising Team
