Noosaville Celebrates Thank you to all the families who attended Assembly last week. It was lovely to have so many families help us celebrate the achieve-ment of a large number of our Year 4-6 students receiving their Caring badges. The Rock band performance was also a great way to start our Friday! This week, we will be celebrating with our Prep to Year 3 students. Congratulations to all those students who have shown care for themselves, others, their learning and the school all year. Thank you to our wonderful staff for supporting and encouraging our students to be Accomplished, Compassionate and Empowered.

Noosaville Expects As usual at this time of year, we are all asking “Where did the time go?” For all staff and students, it is a very busy time of year. As-sessments are being finalised, marked and reports are being written. We will be analysing our semester two academic data carefully as we plan for 2019, but it is timely to consider that aca-demic progress is only one measure of success for our students. Positive results for ‘effort’ will also demonstrate students ‘Care for self’ and ‘Care for their learning’. I am looking forward to reading students’ report cards and to sharing in the celebrations of achieved learning goals. In the last three weeks of the year, I am expecting all students to maintain their focus in the classroom and to strive to be the best they can be, so as to finish the year on a high note.

Traffic congestion is nothing new around school zones, and stu-dent safety is always our prime concern. Representatives from Buslink have been in touch with me recently regarding traffic is-sues around the bus stop area. Parents are respectfully reminded to ensure they are particularly vigilant when driving in school zones and to always drive with due care and attention to other road users. I am advised local police are likely to patrol school zones at pick up and drop off times in the coming weeks. Bus passes: Buslink have requested that the school assist with the distribution of bus pass-es in 2019. I understand Buslink will under-take to leave these in the school office by 25 January for distribu-tion to students. Alasdair Scott Deputy Principal

Transitions: With the closing of fourth school term heralds the end of an era for our year 6 students. This is a very exciting time in the lives of these students and their families. A celebration of so much growth, development and learning. It can also be quite over-whelming, daunting and downright scary particularly for the eldest child of a family. Thus to ensure a successful transition into the next phase of learning, requires a bit of thought, care and prepara-tion. Acknowledge and validate a child’s fears. Seize the oppor-tunity to load a child’s resilience bucket with love, reassurance, reminders of past achievements and efforts made. Show trust in your child. Allow your child to develop independence and accept responsibility. Projecting a positive view to change and to the op-portunities a secondary school environment can offer supports motivation for ensuring a positive shift. Avoid projecting nega-tive personal experiences of secondary school. Just because it wasn’t great for you does not mean it’s going to be a negative ex-perience for your child. Arm your child with strategies and infor-mation for solving problems. What if? Who do I go to for? What happens when? Seek information together by going to the new school’s website and learn about processes and routines. Chat to someone who is al-ready at the school. Ask ques-tions. Take the time to pre-pare – uniforms, book lists, transport plans. Above all take the time to enjoy the journey with your son or daughter.

Keeping an eye on student school attendance: At the

time of writing this article there are 14 school days left in the 2019 academic year and whole school attendance is at 92.3%. Students who have managed to attend school for 95% plus will be receiving an acknowledgement letter with their report card. I encourage all children to be attending every day to ensure they have had every opportunity to do their best on class assessments and to celebrate with their peers a great year well done.

Every day counts. Every student deserves to succeed.

White Ribbon Day: Friday 23 November was White Ribbon

Day. Domestic and Family violence impacts on many families which ultimately impacts on children. Children see, hear, and feel the effects of physical and emotional harm expressed on their parent. Exposure to this type of relationship is abuse to children thus reportable.

Children are at risk of learning dysfunctional ways of managing a relationship leading to experiencing difficulties in their own rela-tionships with peers. Let’s be the best role model we can be to our children. Let’s learn to solve problems in a rational and re-spectful manner. No one person should be victim of violence in their home or community. Happy Families = Happy Children

We also ask if you could com-plete an exit survey - contact the office for further infor-mation. Please also ensure that you return any library books and home readers.

Facilities Works are soon scheduled for our Prep classrooms, with a renova-tion and refresh taking place. Also, plans and preparation for the senior playground shade cover should soon be finalised to start in the new year and an AV upgrade of our hall equipment was com-pleted last month, Stay tuned!

School Watch - School Holidays Are Almost Upon Us During this period empty schools provide an opportunity for crimi-nal activity, becoming targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage – all of which become a cost to the community.

The

School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Govern-ment Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce criminal activi-ty in Queensland schools and encourages everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our schools. If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. 2019 Annual Swimming Carnival The 2019 Annual Noosaville State School Swimming Carnival will be held this term on Tuesday December 11. The Swimming Carnival will be for students born 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007 on Tuesday December 11 (Week 10) at the Eumundi Aquatic Centre. The emphasis is on student participation and all swimmers will earn points for their Sports House. Students in Year 6, even if born 2007, will not compete in the carnival, but rather, compete at their high school swimming carnival early next year. The State, Regional and District dates for all sporting codes have been scheduled earlier to cater for the 2019 Primary and Secondary National Athletics Trials being held in Darwin. As a result, our school carnivals need to be moved forward as well. Our school cross coun-try will be conducted a couple of weeks earlier in Term 1 as will our Athletics carnival in Term 3. The carnival will be conducted at the Eumundi Aquatic Centre. Payments of $11 to the class teacher before Friday 7 December. Apologies that this is a late addition to the calendar, however all schools were only made aware of the changes towards the end of Term 3, as the State, Regional and District calendars were being finalised. Shane Luhrs HPE Teacher

Year Six Surf Skills The year six cohort have just completed their first two lessons of surf skills at Noosa Main Beach. Conditions have been fantastic with beautiful, sunny skies and calm conditions. The Noosa Surf Life Savers have been upskilling our students in surf safety and teaching them board craft and signalling. Our activities so far have included surfing, ocean swimming, boogey boarding and the rescue board. They have also competed in re-lays, swimming and running events in preparation for the school’s surf carnival being held on Wednesday, December 12 from 11:15 am to 2:00 pm. Good luck to our Noosaville competitors that will be competing in the interschool surf carnival on Monday December 3 at Noosa Main Beach. The children have been enthusiastic and extremely well behaved. Bring on the next 3 lessons! Sven McNiven 6M Classroom teacher

Noosa’s finest battle it out for debating title As the school year begins to wind down, some great young minds from our local state schools have been hard at work. Those in the ‘affirmative’ took on those in the ‘negative’ in the annual Noosa District Inter-school Debating competition held last week. Students representing Cooroy, Cooran, Tewantin and Noosaville State Schools participated in a competition where round robin debates occurred on various subjects such as the best things in life are free. Held annually since 2012, the tournament has proven to be a real hit, with students from Years 4-6 finding a fun way to inspire de-bating with a little competitiveness between the schools. The skills and passion were on display during the finals held at Noosaville State School last Monday. For the record, Noosaville’s Year 4, Cooroy’s Year 5 and Noosaville’s Year 6 teams were crowned champions for 2018. Tournament co-ordinator and Noosaville State School teacher, Sue Silburn said the Noosa District Debating Cup was a great success and is now a sought-after title between the four schools and feels it will grow from strength to strength each year it’s held. “The kids have really embraced the annual Debaters’ Cup and we thank Bendigo Bank for their ongoing financial support of this event. Because of it, we’re able to purchase medallions and pre-sent the trophies for the junior and senior team winners. Each student who takes part also receives a certificate of participation. The standard of competition was high again in 2018 and we all had a lot of fun,” Ms. Silburn said. “The students have worked really hard under the guidance of their coaches and adjudicators. We sincerely thank Rick Cass (Tewantin State School), Kathy Facer (Cooran State School) and Hillary Dwyer (Cooroy State School) for their assistance over the past few weeks. “Debating is a great skill for the kids to have as they get older and we certainly have a few budding experts on our hands. At the end of the day the tournaments’ success is measured by the enjoy-ment of the students taking part,” she added. Cooroy and Pomona Community Bank branches’, Simone Flavelle said the bank is delighted about its continued involvement in sponsoring tournaments that develop students’ learning and sportsmanship.
