Staff Profile

Hello! My name is Kristy-lee Laidlaw and have just

returned from maternity leave. I am currently a Prep

teacher and loving being back in the classroom.

I have been teaching at RHPS for nearly 4 years and

have taught in schools around Sydney for 5 years

before moving to Melbourne. I love teaching and

love how every day in the classroom is different from

the day before.

I have a little 7 month old baby called Aretha and

she loves dancing just as much as me. I love going

walking with my family and dog Monty, making and

eating Italian food and performing with my dance

troop twice a year.

Student Showcase A small group of Grade 5 students have been participating in lunchtime photography lessons taught by staff member, Sonja Meilak, using a Canon digital SLR camera. They have been learning about the different

techniques of photography.

They were given the opportunity to have two photos each entered at the Sunbury Agricultural Show recently in the Under 12 age group. The sections entered were "One Flower", "Flowers/Blossom" and "Subject of own choice". Their photos are of subjects found around the school.

There were a number of awards given for their work. They should all be very proud of their outstanding photos.

Interschool Sport Regional Volleyball Finals

Written by Mercedes Ioane & Mikyla Tira (Year 6)

On Friday the 19th of October the Year 6 Team Leader, Matt McCarthy and P.E Coordinator, Michael Lane,

accompanied 8 outstanding volleyball students to the regional Interschool Sport Volleyball finals. The 8 lucky

students were Mercedes Ioane, Mikyla Tira, Ceren Utuk, Alyssa Taiba, Jodie Brown, Hazel Cifci, Naz Mercan and

Esma Aydinoglu. The finals were held at Eric Boardman Memorial Reserve in Sunbury.

We competed against schools from Craigieburn South, Roxburgh Homestead, Westmeadows and Killara.

After a 30 minute training session first match was against Craigieburn South. They put up a great challenge for

Roxburgh Homestead, and unfortunately for us, they were victorious once the game concluded 2 sets to 0.

After the loss from the last game, we gained more advice from our teachers, and used the defeat to our

advantage. We decided to begin playing more aggressively, which eventually led to our victory against

Westmeadows PS. This win motivated our team to continue with our affective strategy.

Although we had done so well during our match, our luck suddenly turned upside down whilst training. Our

serving was all over the place, and we couldn’t aim effectively. We were extremely worried about how we

would do during the next game, so once we began playing, all 8 students in our team were feeling

apprehensive.

Once the game started, the 3 selected co-captains of the team began encouraging our team in order to

increase our chances of victory. By doing this, Roxburgh Homestead began playing more confidently, which

lead to our amazing win over Killara PS.

During the games, there were a few star players who completely stood out from the crowd. They had great

sportsmanship, and played with excellent skill and efficiency. Our MVP for this

Even though our team played magnificently well, after checking the leader board, we realised we had come in

second place on the day. No matter where our school was on the leader board, we were extremely proud for

making it this far.

Matt McCarthy and Michael Lane congratulated all 8 participants from school, and, being the generous

teachers they are, allowed us to purchase McDonalds on our way back to school. We stopped and ate in order

to take a break from the tiring tournament.

Once the team arrived back at school, we were congratulated by our class mates and teachers for making it

into the finals, putting smiles on our faces.

We would like to thank all the volleyball squad players and our coaches for their time and guidance during the

year.

YEAR 6

2019 Prep Students

Next week we are excited to meet our new Prep students for 2019. We have many activities organised

throughout October and November to get to know our new students and families.

The first of our activities includes a Meet and Greet session. These sessions will start from Monday the 29th of

October. During Meet and Greet, students will complete fun activities with their parents and a staff member

from our school. This session helps us get to know your child so we can best plan for a smooth start to their

schooling. You would have received a letter stating your Meet and Greet time. If you are

unsure of your session time, please contact the General Office on 9305 1688.

On Thursday 1st of November we have our Teddy Bears Picnic. Bring your lunch and a teddy bear to the

Multipurpose Room from 12:45 – 1:45pm to meet other new Preps and families.

Throughout November we have our Prep Transition Program and Information Sessions.

Session 1 – Thursday 15th November

Session 2 – Thursday 22nd November

Session 3 – Thursday 29th November

These visits are opportunities for your child to participate in classroom activities with members of our

current Prep teaching staff. During the information sessions, we will discuss topics including how to prepare

your child for school, uniforms and school programs.

We can’t wait to welcome our new Prep students for 2019!

2018 International Competition and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)

Last term, 54 students from Grade 3 to Grade 6 were given the opportunity to participate in the University of

New South Wales Maths competition. This is the first time that our school has participated in this competition

and it was pleasing to see that students were eager to challenge themselves.

Each child had 40 Maths questions to complete and the questions become progressively more challenging

throughout the test. Grades 3 to 5 students had 45 minutes to complete the test and Grade 6 students were

given one hour.

The school is very proud of the efforts put in by ALL students. This week, results were given out and students

were presented with certificates based on their awards they have received. This year, our school has been

awarded 2 Distinction, 4 Credit, 7 Merit and 41 Participation certificates.

Again, congratulations and well done to all the students who took part in the competition.

First Aid News

Roxburgh Homestead Primary School now has an Automated External Defibrillator on site, situated in the

First Aid room.

This has been provided to us by Australian First Aid for ongoing staff training.

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a device that detects lethal heart rhythms which stop the heart

from pumping effectively and then allows a rescuer to deliver a measured shock to revert these rhythms, so

the heart can pump effectively again. The only method available to revert lethal cardiac arrest rhythms is the

use of a defibrillator e.g. AED.

Dear RHPS Students,

Yesterday 3Vicki took out the recycling bins to the kerb for collection for the first time. People had recycled properly for the most part in 15 bins. Vicki only had to pull out a few things that couldn’t be recycled. She found uneaten food, food scraps, food packaging, cleaning cloths, plastic bags, disposable coffee cups and a big polystyrene box.

Everyone made a pretty good effort but please do not put non-recyclable items in our recycling bins at all. Just as you recycle at home, please do the same at school.

Please do not throw perfectly good food away. Take it home for someone else to eat rather than waste it.

Sadly, five bins from the breezeway could not be put out for recycling at all because they were full of regular rubbish – non-recyclables. These had to be emptied into the skip.

If you are not sure if something can be recycled, please look at the sticker on the front of each bin or ask a teacher or another student.

Thank you to everyone who is making the effort to recycle!

Yours Sincerely,

3Vicki

P.S. Please don’t make a mess at school. Show pride. Let’s keep our school beautiful and protect all animal habitats too.
